I've been able to print with other distros (Mint, Sabayon) without problem so I'm guessing the way my printer is configured with Slack must be wrong. My CX6600 is recognized and when I try to print, it responds, but by printing a page filled with black ink. I have tried printing in Okular, Firefox and OpenOffice with the same result.
View 1 RepliesI upgraded from 13.0 to 13.1 and now I have strange behaviors with the printer. It is an Epson Stylus Photo RX640. It was working well with the vanilla Gutenprint 5.2.2 that came in Slack 13.0. The printer is shared and used from other slackware boxes and a mac. Upgrade to 13.1 (gutenprint gets to be 5.2.4) ...
Now when I print from the machine that has the printer attached I get full black pages, and cups shows errors. The Mac is still able to print well (probably because it is using its own PPD and passing through directly to the printer). I then removed gutenprint, and then removed the 5.2.2 PPDs (that were still in the system). Reinstalled gutenprint from the Slackware 13.1 distro. And the problem persists.

Has anyone got this set up and working properly? I have read god knows how many things on how to do this but still have been unable to get it to work. I tried using gimp with a downloaded template but it all came out the wrong size etc. I am not too bothered about printing images, just text.

View 7 Replies View RelatedTwo days ago I downloaded and installed new updates after upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10. After the update I was informed I needed to restart. Once my laptop booted up again it stayed to a black screen and then filled up with error messages like something about trace call or call trace?
I had no way to get into my system but I did have some minor success starting in an old kernel. However after a while it would freeze like the graphics driver was going wrong.
Two attempt later of reinstalling 10.10 from disc after deleting the drive content and after updating it would go back to the same.
So I have now disabled updates as I haven't a clue on which one(s) is causing these problems.
I am on a HP Pavillion dv7 with nVidia graphics card and running 64amd Ubuntu.
I've been having some problems recently with Ubuntu and my Printer. I find that when using ubuntu, ink drains much faster, and constant refills are required. I know the printer works fine, I use it on windows when ubuntu Fails. Today I was trying to print a colour document out, this was with default config, standard print quality etc., this was the result. How to just get normal quality printing, without having to revert to ... windows? How can I consult the ink levels of the DX4450 from Ubuntu. I have tried both MtInk and Epsutils and both failed.
Epson PX720WD Wireless Network Printing For setting up wireless printing for Epson PX720WD
System -> Adminstration -> Printing and click Add to select New Printer
Under Printer Type select Network Printer This will open a drop-down list. Select AppSocket/HP JetDirect
This will show two text boxes called Host: and Port: for Host: you need to put the IP address of the printer. Leave the Port: as the default 9100
You can determine the IP of the printer by pressing the Setup key on the printer, then select Network -> Network Settings -> Display Wireless Summary If the printer is currently connected to the network, it's IP address will be listed.
Enter the IP address and select Forward
Now you need to choose your printer driver.
Under Manufacturer choose Epson Now for Model you will choose Stylus Photo PX720WD
It will suggest that you use the Epson Stylus Photo PX72OWD Series-epson-inkjet-printer 1.0.0-1lsb3.2 (Seiko Epson Corporation LSB 3.2) [en] (recommended) driver. This is correct. Click Forward and Apply
Unless your have the drivers installed already ignore the driver setup just below:
Describe Printer, enter the following details:
Printer Name: Epson-Stylus-Photo-PX720WD-1
Description: Epson-Stylus-Photo-PX720WD-1
Location: wherever
Click Apply
Now you can go back to the printers box and right-click your new printer and select Make Default.
I'm running OpenSUSE 11.0 (64 bit). I have an Epson Stylus Photo R300 printer that used to work just fine. Apparently there was an update to the CUPS software that I applied and now the printer is no longer working.
Through examining the error_log file in /var/log/cups I found that two files were missing from /usr/lib/cups/filter. These files existed in the /usr/lib64/cups/filter directory so I linked them to the /usr/lib/cups/filter directory. That cleared up two errors.
When I send a "Print Self Test Page" command from the CUPS Printers page, I get the following error:

When I attempt to send a print job from an application like gedit or OpenOffice Writer, I get the following error:

I've crawled all through the openSUSE forums and 'googled' all sorts of variations for these errors and found nothing useful. I'm hoping someone here might have a clue as to where I might go next to fix this.
Like I said, it was working before and now it's not so there must be something in a recent CUPS release that has messed things up.
one month at this stage and noticed recently that all automatic updates to my system have ceased, so I tried a zypper update from the terminal yesterday and believe it or not I got 1110 updates, about 7 deletions a 3 programs were changing architecture. This went all all day yesterday and finished sometime early this morning when I had to force a reboot as the shutdown button did nothing. After all those updates I do not notice any version upgrades for a few things I checked like Office, Amarok, DigiKAM etc but I am back to a most annoying problem that I had in my first few days i.e. my printer an Epson Stylus Color 760 is totally messing up 2nd and subsequent pages in a printout.
The last time this happened it seemed to sort itself out because deleting the printers discovered and their drivers did nothing. I am sorry to say it is putting me off SUSE 11.4 which I had liked BUT it is so frustating when I can't eben print more than one page correctly. I have come from Windows 7 where these problems did not exist.
Both my printers can't print more that one page on the row whatever the application I use.
I used to have a all-in-one printer HP PSC 1510 that I installed without any trouble.
A few days ago, I've got another scanner-printer HP 1050 that I tried to install on the same laptop in order to use it in another place. I had to take the new version of HP-lip, since 11.3 did not provide the right driver. I just printed the test page and it seemed okay.
Then, I upgraded from 11.3 to 11.4. And I had to print a long document. Only the first page was displayed correctly. All the following pages are more and more mixed up. It prints allways the same paragraph with big dark lines...
Following to cup, the drivers in use are :
Deskjet_1050_J410 : HP Deskjet 1050 j410 Series, hpcups 3.11.3a
PSC-1500-series : HP PSC 1500 Series, hpcups 3.10.2rc1.9
But the trouble is the same for both printers.
I can't guess if it comes from HP-lip or from my upgrade.
I have a HP printer connected to Ubuntu 10.04. Just recently I noticed that when I print something it also prints a cover page with some info about print job. Does anyone know how to stop printing the cover page? This is a serious waste of paper.

However everytime I attempt to print the printer will say that it's A4 and asks to load paper. I have searched everywhere for this default and I cannot find it in KDE. While in Gnome, all works as expected with printing (even when printing from KDE applications). Does anyone know how to change the default from A4 to US Letter?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI would like to print full page on a HP Deskjet F4280 using any kind of software (GIMP for example).
I tried to edit the printer ppd file, turned hardware margins off in the print properties in GIMP, yet when I try to print an image 8.5 in wide on letter size paper, GIMP still leaves approx. 1/8in gap on the paper edge.
The printer hardware can do it: when I simply use the copy function it can print to the very edge of the paper.
Question: does anybody know how I need to edit the ppd file (or other config files) to convince GIMP (or other programs) to print using the full page?
After some effort, finaly managed to get my Canon PIXMAiP4200 printer connected as a network printer. (I connect it through the USB printer port on a DLink DI-524UP router) Everything seems ok so far, except that I cannot find any means of specifying that printing should start from the last page.

This is my first server and I am very new to the server world.I have an Epson Stylus NX400 connected via USB. I have managed to configure it to the point where I can see the printer listed on my client laptop and can print a test page. However, I cannot print anything else. When I access the job history through the CUPS adminI can see that the print jobs were recognized and marked as complete, even though the printer never physically engaged.

For example If I print a document that has colored text then any black text is printed using the color cartridges rather then using black. I have been surviving by using windows XP in virtualbox but I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I've looked all over then net for a solution but I've found nothing. When I try to print in grayscale it send a blank paper to the printer...When I try to print anything in color I can't change the margin of the paper, it always put like ZERO margin and the text go throw the end of the paper.
The paper size is A5 (Half A4) and the printer is in LAN in a Windows computer.
It's me or when I print in grayscale it print faster? So, it's an update or something? Because last time I printed from Ubuntu (like a month ago) it printed perfectly OK in grayscale (I don't know about the margin).

For some reason I couldn't get anything from the black ink cartridge in test mode or for real. The printer would go through the motions but would return a blank page. Turns out it was because my COLOUR ink cartridge was empty!! Solution was simply to select print in grayscale. Also I find with this particular printer HPCUPS works better than HPLIP.

I have an intermittent printing issue that results in part of a printed page containing a horizontal line that spans over two lines. The line is mostly black, with the occasional small break where there seem to be printed multiple characters printed over each other.
Sometimes I print and I do not get this issue. Other times I can print 60+ pages and it happens, while sometimes I get it on a single page being printed.
I'm not sure if this is a driver, printer or cable issue. We've used it through CUPS and we've used a print hub to convert the USB to a network accessible printer to see if that made any difference but it did not.
I have a feeling this has something to do with the print job data corruption.
Suddenly, my printer has stopped printing in black. Either I get a smudge on the paper, or the warning light comes on and it stops working completely.
hp-levels reports the black cartridge as 82% full and in good health hp-info says "there is a problem with a print cartridge" hp-clean either doesn't help or doesn't run
I've tried wiping the print head (the ink's coming out OK) and polishing the cartridge connection.
I had a similar problem on 13.1, but was solved by this forum by copying 80-sane.rules to /etc/udev/rules.d/ . With 13.37 the same trick doesn't work. Here is my scanimage output:

I have an Epson Stylus NX515 multifunction printer connected wirelessly to a COMPAQ Presario V4000. I was having no problem with the printer and it was working fine under Slackware 13.0 running CUPS 1.3.11 with the standard CUPS driver for Epson printers.I recently upgraded to Slackware 13.1 which comes with CUPS 1.4.3, during the set up I had CUPS search for my printer which it found and I loaded the standard driver. When I printed a page it comes out all black. I then down loaded the Avasys Epson-Stylus_NX515-pipslite-en.ppd and pipslite_1.4.0-5 software and installed them both. I restarted CUPS and odified the printer in CUPS to use the pipslite driver

Ideally it should be able to print C++ code with line numbers, syntax highlighting, multiple columns per page, customizable fonts and sizes and a print preview feature so that I can make sure it looks right before sending it to the printer. It appears that notepad++ had at least some of these features, but it is not available on linux. The best I could do so far is to copy/paste the output of 'cat -n foo.cpp' into oowriter and format it into two colums. I don't get synax highlighting though and I have to manually replace tabs with a few spaces as well as some excessive leading spaces before the line numbering.

I saw a post about it under ubuntu that you had to modify
/etc/udev/rules.d/45-libsane.rules
Which doesn't exist on my Slackware 13 install. I hope this Epson runs faster than my Canon FB630U, which takes almost a four minutes to scan a 5x6 photo and forget scanning an 8.5x11 page (go take a nap).
I've done some investigating on the threads, but none of the normal fixes for this permission problem work. I've added myself to the scanner and lp groups. I've also added the right device code to the epson configuration file under /etc/sane.d/ . Scanner is recognized and works under root.
When I "scanimage >somefile" in the console I get a permission error when I'm a regular user; when I do the same under root, it works. Likewise, my graphical scan frontends report that they cannot find the scanner when I am a regular user. I see alien bob had an old workaround at [url] but I don't think 13.1 has hotplug set up the same way anymore.
I'm trying to set up my EPSON Stylus TX120 multifunction, and i've successfully installed the printer, and for the scanner i followd the instructions from avasys page: installed iscan-data and iscan (core) compiling them from source with no problems using --prefix=/usr in both packages, but when i run sane-find-scanner no scanner is found. If i try using scanimage -L only my webcam is listed, so, is there anything else i have to do in order to get my scanner detected in slack 13.37? I've run both commands as root, by the way.
