Ubuntu :: Terminal Command - Cd - Media - My Passport Is Not Working

Jun 14, 2011

The drive is mounted, and I'm saving files to it, but I can't navigate to it in terminal with the cd command. I can access other USB drives. Is it the space in the drive name? how to access the directory?

Ubuntu :: ./ Terminal Command Is Not Working?

Apr 3, 2011

I just recently installed Ubuntu to do some light perl development. I was installing Adobe Air and after I made the bin file executable, I could not run it with the (./). It says that there is no such file or directory. Here is the output from my terminal:

alan@workstartion:~$ cd Downloads
alan@workstartion:~/Downloads$ ls -a
. hal-9000.png
.. libflashplayer.so
AdobeAIRInstaller.bin mass-effect-normandy-sr1.jpg

[Code]....

I've deleted the .bin and re-downloaded it, I have renamed it, moved it and even tried executing it by removing the .bin and running it from its location. I am still getting the same errors.

Ubuntu :: Gedit Command In Terminal Not Working

May 1, 2011

I am trying to use the gedit command to edit my smb.conf file. It was originally working and all of a sudden it has stopped working. I have typed.. 'gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf' but it is a no go. I used the chmod command to set permissions as.. 'chmod 744 smb.conf' However I am still unable to get the file to open. If I do the 'more smb.conf' command I am able to read the contents of the file, however I am unable to edit them.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Mount The Volume 'My Passport'

Feb 15, 2010

Cannot mount volume.

Unable to mount the volume 'My Passport'.

Details

$MFTMirr does not match $MFT (record 0). Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details.

I'm trying to reinstall ubuntu because I messed up a bunch of stuff but I need to back it up on this hard drive which won't mount in any linux distro.

Ubuntu :: Is Command Line Invocation Of Gnome-terminal To Run More Than One Command

Feb 17, 2010

how to pass something more than a one-command startup for gnome-terminal. I will give an example of what I'm trying to do here:

Code:

#! /bin/bash
#
#TODO write this for gnome and xterm

[code]....

This same error occurs if the gnome-terminal line is changed to

Code:

gnome-terminal -e mcTerm

Is there any way to pass more than one command on to gnome-terminal? I have tried various single and double quoting senarios and in a final attempt, I abstracted to an exported function all to no avail. Perhaps even though gnome-term is better at many things than xterm, xterm trumps it in this instance.

Debian Hardware :: WD Passport Isn't Automounted

Feb 19, 2011

I used Squeeze live disc to verify that it supports my laptop fully. Squeeze was able to detect and load my USB WD Passport 250GB drive. I installed the OS and now the same drive isn't automounted. Every time I plugin the drive I see following message:

Unable to mount Data-istan

My drive is named Data-istan. I faced some other issues but found help on Wiki but couldn't find help related to this topic. I intend to put all my experience on Wiki. FYI, I have ntfs3g package already installed.

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting Wd Passport External Hdd To Replace Non-functioning Internal Hdd

May 22, 2010

I recently bought an Acer Extensa 5635Z and things were fine until I lent it to my godson for a weekend and got it back with the internal hard drive not functioning; he said it worked one night, and didn't the next morning; now, it's not recognised and an OS is not found during bootup. Whereas this was bad news for me in one way, on the other hand it was the perfect chance to switch to Ubuntu, something I've been wanting to do for years, and I've been really enjoying most aspects of it after using a live disk to be able to do my work over the last couple of days. Now, instead of buying another new laptop, I would like to use an external hard drive that I've just bought in the place of my broken internal hd, and have Ubuntu on it.I've read tutorials on it and they basically say that all I have to do is:

* Run the live disk - done
* Uncheck these options -
Mount removable drives when hot-plugged

[code]....

Is that it? Is there anything else I should do for this particular brand or situation (will the BIOS recognise the hard drive?) or any issues I should know about beforehand? How do I choose the HDD as primary boot? Should I insert the external HD before or after unchecking the options? Should I leave any of the 250 GB to '/dev/sda1'? There being no actual internal hard drive won't provoke trouble with the process?

P.S. My computer is 64-bit capable and I've been using a 64-bit Ubuntu disc. I've had trouble viewing things in this interim period, particularly videos, and incapable of installing codecs. Should I just get a 32-bit Ubuntu disc? Or will the problems be resolved when I have a rewritable disc on which to operate?

Fedora Hardware :: Cannot Format WD Passport (WDBAAA2500ABK-00)

As you may have heard Western Digital external drives seem to play funny with Linux

I have acquired a 250GB WD Passport (WDBAAA2500ABK-00) and would like to format to use with Linux - possibly even as a persistant LiveUSB...

Has anyone de-cyphered how to format these little buggers?

Gparted and Fedora 13's Disk Utility can't touch it.

All I understand so far is that it has something to do with the Smartware they put on it to have it function on Windows/Mac.

Fedora :: Mount Removable Media From Command Line

I'm using Fedora 12, and I want to mount/unmount my USB memory stick from the command line. I know I could edit /etc/fstab and so on, but I want to emulate what happens when you mount using the GUI (I use KDE and the device notifier), that is, I want to be able to do this as an unprivileged user and not have to know the mount point exists in advance.

I'm sure in older versions of Fedora there was a command something like `gnome-user-mount' which let me do this knowing only the filesystem label... What is the current equivalent?

Debian Configuration :: HP Media Bar Not Working

Jul 4, 2011

I would appear that I recently installed linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64. Since then I have noted that my HP media bar up top doesn't work. This means I can't enable/disable wireless. From an lspci output, it still sees the hardware, and it's loaded, however, not functioning. Should I be looking at rolling the kernel back, or work on getting it working via some other means? Any liveCD I've tried doesn't seem to be able to get it going either. So I'm under the assumption here it is the kernel version, and not a hardware problem.

Hardware :: Media Button Not Working?

Jan 19, 2010

I think this goes in this subforum, but I'm not sure. I am using Mandriva 2010 KDE 4.3 I have a Toshiba Satellite with 7 "special" buttons: power, home page, media, play/pause, stop, back, next. This is the best pic I could find of them (on top of the keyboard there). I was able to set it so that all of those keys preform their correct functions, except the media key. For some reason whenever I try to set it as a shortcut the key input simply isn't registered. I know that this key used to work under Windows, I guess there is something wrong with the mapping. What can I do to find out where the problem is and fix it?
