The chooses are all greyed out and I am only able to view "My Processes".I launched the app as root and had the same lack of choice.I also disabled SELinux and rebooted the machine.

Jul 9, 2010Title sums up my problem. Im running so many processes in Slackware, running KDE. I dont even run that many programs, and already its more than XP has (by a **** load). What is wrong here, and how do i kill a lot of the processes to cut down on my cpu usage by tons and cut down memory usage while still keeping everything the same?

The memory rises over time, when I restarted my computer it was up to 500 - 600 mbps. At the minute after its at 360.
Fedora :: Firefox Does Not Show Up In System Monitor
Apr 18, 2011I recently installed FC14 on my system as I was previously on FC8. Everything seems to be working fine, but I ran into an issue today where I wanted to kill firefox. I checked in gnome system monitor and I did not see a running process for firefox or firefox-bin. I also ran a "ps -e" command from a terminal as root and did not see it there either. I don't know if this is a fedora issue or a firefox issue, so I am posting it here first.
And just to vent on something that IS a firefox issue. I have the new firefox 4 running and when I click the X in the top corner, it doesn't give me the option to save my current tabs and exit like the previous versions did. That was a feature I liked.

Jun 8, 2011my Dell OptiPlex 990 running Ubuntu 10.10 64bit is freezing irregulary after using firefox.The screen and the keyboard are frozen, all i can do is moving the mouse cursor, but i can't click at anything.The System monitor applet didn't show anything before the crash. I couldn't find the logs for the time before the freeze startetd.

Mar 8, 2011Ubuntu system monitor applet doesn't show internet traffic although my wireless is working just fine. I use a conky to monitor bandwidth through vnstat and had no problem till I upgraded to maverick.

General :: Show Only The Processes That Use More Than 10% Of The Cpu?
Apr 24, 2011I am trying to show only the processes that use more than 10% of the cpu. I have managed to get it to show the processes in use using:
ps -eo pcpu,cpu,nice,state,cputime,args.
Then I am unsure how to sort this information so it only shows over 10%?

Jan 1, 2011openSUSE 11.3 64-bit fully updated, running the latest K3B, 2.0.1. from the Packman repos with the codecs installed. Sometimes it starts up and runs fine, others the splash and then nothing. And again other times it will start and never show up until I reboot and then there it is. When I go to system monitor it will show under CPU% "disk sleep" if that helps. FWIW I have similar issues with Nero 4. I've added myself to the cd rom group and all of that.

General :: How To Monitor Some Processes
Apr 30, 2011I need to create a small list of processes in a monitor.conf file. A shell script needs to check the status of these processes and restart if they are down. This shell script needs to be run every couple of minutes.
The output of the shell script needs to be recorded in a log file.
So far I have created a blank monitor.conf file. I have gotten the shell script to automatically updated every couple of minutes The Shell script also sends some default test information to the log file.
how I go about doing this part ? A shell script needs to check the status of these processes and restart if they are down.
I have put in the conf file the below commands but I am not sure if this is right.
ps ax | grep httpd
ps ax | grep apache
I also dont know if the shell script should read from the conf file or if the conf file should send information to the shell script file.

- hardware failure
What commands do I need to run to output the result to a log file? I know there are solutions both paid and free, but my company does not allow. they want linux built in commands or methods to do it. I do not know bash scripting. I know some commands like "df -h" to monitor harddisk space but not sure on the other stuffs.

Nov 11, 2015I need something to monitor and record the activity of the top 5 processes in terms of CPU usage and load average during a specific timespan. I'm having some spikes in the morning and just realized it's not always at the same time so it's hard to get up and watch the processes with top. I need something that records CPU usage and load average of the processes from 4AM to 9AM (for instance) so I can debug the process that it's consuming my CPU and spitting +80 e-mails with monit each day.

Feb 23, 2010I have persistent video tearing my second monitor (Mitsubushi HDTV). I have tried everything that was suggested with some improvement. I have no issue with tearing if I add the following to my xorg.conf

Oct 16, 2009I am facing problem with the fresh installation of Fedora 11. (I have moved from Fedora 9). When I try to view videos on ..... or use the Cheese Webcam Booth, I get blurred lines on the screen and I am unable to see any video or pic.
Also I noticed that the when i go to System > Preferences>Display, it shows me UNKOWN MONIOR.
However, if I got to System>Administration>Display and enter the su password, it shows me correct monitor and the graphics driver.
I am not sure if my original is related to the Unknown Monitor.
I also tried to install Nvidia driver but it crashed the xserver and I had remove the driver.
My Monitor is LG 700E and Graphics card is from intel. as I am not able watch any video.

Is there a log that actually tracks the system load levels and possibly the processes running at the time and their percentage of the load?
At the basic level what I am looking for would be a log of top but not exactly that.

Mar 19, 2010So I'm not really sure what it is exactly that I did but my internet just quit working. I can't connect to anything at all. I have an acer aspire 5532. It uses build in wireless but I just tried to connect using an ethernet cable and nothing happened. Still couldn't get on the internet. My wireless monitor won't even show up on the panel and I've tried to readd it and it doesn't work. I have no need for a computer without internet.

Feb 3, 2011I have a program that receive user input.
I want to run this program automatically without user interaction, and in order to do that I need to simulate key events.
How can I do such a thing?
The program I am running is partly java and partly shell.
The shell part is easily done by using:
./prog.sh <parameters (Parameters being a file containing parameters)
But the java doesn't work similarly.

Mar 23, 2010I have an old Compaq Pro desktop with Ubuntu 8.04 installed. been using it without a major problem until four days ago. When I attempted to boot all I got was a screen with green vertical lines at the top and horizontal yellow, red, and orange lines below that. Since I recently had downloaded a new kernal I tried to use another kernal but that got the same result. I tried to boot with a live cd and finally got it to boot in low graphics mode. Apr 3, 2011In System Monitor, on the File Systems tab, the "Total", "Available" and "Used" columns don't seem to add up, and the "Used" percentage doesn't seem correct either.
My config:
/dev/sda1 = 80 GB SSD drive, / partition.
/dev/sdb1 = 50 GB FAT32 partition of an external 500 GB USB hard disk.
/dev/sdb2 = remainder of the 500 GB USB hard disk encrypted using luks.
Screenshot: The /dev/sda1 figures don't really add up well, but they're close at least (how you get "50% Used" from any of those figures I don't know!).
However, for /dev/sdb2, they're miles off:
"Free" = 146.2 GiB
"Total" = 409.7 GiB
"Available" = 125.4 GiB
"Used" = 263.5 GiB

May 24, 2011It takes me a while to log in the splash screen just sits there for ages before i get to the desktop. Never used to be this slow and I'm not sure why. Firstly, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, standard DE. I do have conky starting up in a script but it has the & at the end of the line so I didn't think this would cause it (or is there some special case for log in time on how & is treated?). However as a test I will comment out the line in the script and see if it is the cause.
However just for general knowledge and in case that isn't the problem, how does one go seeing what is happening during the time from when one log's in and the desktop is displayed? Is there some kind of log that shows the date/time that can be enabled or is there a debug mode that can be enabled somehow via special keys or maybe from grub?

Mar 13, 2010I have noticed they sell digital writing tablets that have the ability to show the pen strokes both on the tablet's display and on the computer's monitor at the same time, and I think they are called LCD digital tablets and they serve as both a second computer monitor AND a writing tablet combined in one, such as the Wacom Cintiq, and must be connected both by USB as well as with a VGA/DVI port, and you have the ability to open up a drawing application directly from the tablet such as Paint where you can draw or write on the tablet's display. And you can see what you are writing on the tablet's display. Then you save the results to a JPEG file, for example.
But I do not want a digtal tablet quite as elaborate as that. I am looking for something similar to the credit card terminals used in stores where you can sign your name directly on the display after swiping your credit card, and you can see what you are writing as you write. Then your signature shows up on a paper receipt later. Do they make digital tablets like that for the home user, and if they do, would they have to hook up to the VGA/DVI port on your video card? What are they called and where can I get one?
I've searched several online stores but they do not say if you can see what you are writing on the tablet's display. I already have a Wacom tablet in Linux but you can not see what you are writing on the tablet. I have to keep looking up at my computer's monitor to see what I am writing and proficiency is reduced as a result. And again, I do not want a tablet as elaborate as I described in my first paragraph. I want something simplier, such as the type used at a credit card terminal.
