Fedora :: Firefox Does Not Show Up In System Monitor
Apr 18, 2011
I recently installed FC14 on my system as I was previously on FC8. Everything seems to be working fine, but I ran into an issue today where I wanted to kill firefox. I checked in gnome system monitor and I did not see a running process for firefox or firefox-bin. I also ran a "ps -e" command from a terminal as root and did not see it there either. I don't know if this is a fedora issue or a firefox issue, so I am posting it here first.
And just to vent on something that IS a firefox issue. I have the new firefox 4 running and when I click the X in the top corner, it doesn't give me the option to save my current tabs and exit like the previous versions did. That was a feature I liked.

Ubuntu system monitor applet doesn't show internet traffic although my wireless is working just fine. I use a conky to monitor bandwidth through vnstat and had no problem till I upgraded to maverick.

I just upgrade to F14 from F10 on a dual montor setup. Firefox behaives differently on F14 than on F10.
On F10 it followed the mouse pointer's location and show up on the correct monitor
When maximized at close, it is always displayed on the left monitor. When not maximized at close it will open on the monitor where the mouse pointer is located.
About minimize/maximize Firefoxe before closing and it seems to work in some case, but not for me.

I have been having a freaky experience where Firefox appears to freeze up and brings down the terminal and any process viewer with it. For example, I can open a gnome-terminal or xterm window, but the moment I press a key, that window freezes up as well and must be force-quitted with the Force Quit panel applet. In addition, the System Monitor applet I have on my top panel freezes. It's really weird.
I began having this problem around a month or two ago. I thought it was something to do with something I installed, so a week or so ago I did a clean install, backing up my documents, Firefox profile, and GNOME settings from the old installation but wiping everything else (I'd already ruled out the Firefox profile by renaming the folder and creating a new one from the profile manager). Yet the problem persists.
I'd be happy to post any output, but as bash (including Ctrl+Alt+F1 command line) freezes as well, it's a little hard to treat the problem when it happens. One more thing: I am on a university campus which uses 802.1x encryption on both wired and wireless connections; is it possible that that is causing the crashes?

I am facing problem with the fresh installation of Fedora 11. (I have moved from Fedora 9). When I try to view videos on ..... or use the Cheese Webcam Booth, I get blurred lines on the screen and I am unable to see any video or pic.
Also I noticed that the when i go to System > Preferences>Display, it shows me UNKOWN MONIOR.
However, if I got to System>Administration>Display and enter the su password, it shows me correct monitor and the graphics driver.
I am not sure if my original is related to the Unknown Monitor.
I also tried to install Nvidia driver but it crashed the xserver and I had remove the driver.
My Monitor is LG 700E and Graphics card is from intel. as I am not able watch any video.

openSUSE 11.3 64-bit fully updated, running the latest K3B, 2.0.1. from the Packman repos with the codecs installed. Sometimes it starts up and runs fine, others the splash and then nothing. And again other times it will start and never show up until I reboot and then there it is. When I go to system monitor it will show under CPU% "disk sleep" if that helps. FWIW I have similar issues with Nero 4. I've added myself to the cd rom group and all of that.

I have a laptop with Redhat 5 installed and a Windows 7 Virtual Machine. The laptop is connected to the internet but I cant access any web pages in firefox - it just comes up with Server Not Found (tried all different sites). I know the internet connection is good as if i go into my windows VM firefox works normal. Ive checked the network settings and tried setting to 'no proxy' and automatically detect but nothing seems to work. Ive uninstalled and reinstalled firefox and still get the same.
Ive tried both wired and wireless but makes no difference. Seems really weird that it works in the Windows VM but not in Redhat which its booting into.

Unlike FC14, in FC15 there are very limited options available in Date and Time settings.
I want to see day of the week, date and time with seconds in my clock panel.
I was able to get first two using "gnome-tweak-tool".
But I'm not able to display seconds in the clock.
how to enable seconds in the clock?

I read the manual for systemD and systemctl, and I could not see a way to display the dependencies of local-fs.target. My system hangs at boot, somewhere before the local-fs.target completes. Not only do I know know what is failing, I don't know what it is trying to do.I can boot to the emergency target. But that does not trigger the problem. I have the logging options on, but it FREEZES when I try the local-fs.target, so I never get to open the logs. I'd like to know what it is trying to do, so I can step through manually.
I boot to emergency. Manually start each local-fs.target.wants/* then local-fs.target It waits a long tome for something, then it "works" but does not mount my lvm filesystems. I try again for default.target, and this time local-fs.target fails with a dependency, and the system hangs again. syslog is not available at the time of the hang. What ever is the first fail, is lost when the console scrolls.I's looking a lot like I must do a full reinstall of this system.

This may fall under the "ain't broke don't fix it" category but it's driving me nuts. I've got the Broadcom 4322 wireless adapter in my laptop and it works fine with broadcom-wl driver and kmod. However there is no ifcfg-eth1 file and the card does not show up in system-config-network.

can anyone please tell me which package provides the gnome system monitor applet (the one which can display cpu load and disk I/O in the tray)?I run XFCE on F14/x64 and would like to display it using the XfApplet.
What i've tried already:
*) Installed the "GNOME Desktop Environment" --> Nothing changed
*) did a yum provides "/usr/lib64/bonobo/servers/*" to check which packages are providing applets - didn't found anything which sounds like the system monitor applet
The XfApplet shows up a bunch of available applets but not the system monitor ...

Since one of the recent updates, I cannot close the System Monitor anymore. Opening it, no problem. All processes are listed just fine and I can force close anything that gives me trouble but... When I want to close System Monitor again, nothing. Qtrl + Q, the X close button at the top right, Alt + F4... all do nothing. And although each time I see some disk activity, there is nothing in the logs.
Another thing I notice is that both dbus-daemon and gnome-system-monitor use about 40% CPU time each, taking the system to 100% CPU usage all the time.Luckily, I have System Monitor open so I can select the process gnome-system-monitor from the list and hit Terminate Process. I did not find anything about it in these forums. Anyone noticed this too or am I the only one?

I have persistent video tearing my second monitor (Mitsubushi HDTV). I have tried everything that was suggested with some improvement. I have no issue with tearing if I add the following to my xorg.conf
Quote:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection
Is it possible to disable composite for one monitor only and keep it for the other. Or at lease is it possible to have compiz for one monitor only and disable it for the other.

In the gnome-system-monitor, on the "Processes" tab in the "View" menu, I should be able to choose between "Active Processes", "All Processes", and "My Processes". The chooses are all greyed out and I am only able to view "My Processes".I launched the app as root and had the same lack of choice.I also disabled SELinux and rebooted the machine.

I have Fedora Linux 13 64bit system. I use System Monitor to check which process is taking how much memory and cpu. Normally I have dozens of Chrome and Firefox windows open. The Processes tab shows which process is taking how much cpu/ram resources but I unfortunately there is no option like right click and make the window active that matches the PID (the one process that I have currently highlighted). Usually there is a chrome process taking up 30 or 40 percent of CPU while dozens other chrome processes taking much less cpu. I must determine which chrome window ( or any application which has multiple instances running) is taking that much CPU time. So can some one help me to solve this problem?

I've been troubleshooting a friends computer and we've pretty well hit a brick wall. The issue at hand is the video card will not output properly. To be specific, it's an NVidia card with both DVI and VGA ports. We want it to output via the VGA and ignore the DVI because there's nothing plugged in there (the monitor we want to use doesn't support DVI). At any rate, the only time we can get the VGA to work is when we have another monitor plugged into the DVI port and dual head the system. When we do this it also adds an extra "Unknown Monitor" to the display panel. When we just use the DVI the extra "monitor" disappears. now we don't want to have monitor sitting here useless just so we can use the vga out, but there seems little else to do. We tried installing the Nvidia proprietary drivers through the software manager and yum and it failed both ways.
This is really frustrating because it seems like it should be such a simple thing but nothing works. Does anyone else have similar issues? is there something i can do to fix this? I apologize if i've not provided enough info, but ask and i'll post anything you need to diagnose.

So I'm not really sure what it is exactly that I did but my internet just quit working. I can't connect to anything at all. I have an acer aspire 5532. It uses build in wireless but I just tried to connect using an ethernet cable and nothing happened. Still couldn't get on the internet. My wireless monitor won't even show up on the panel and I've tried to readd it and it doesn't work. I have no need for a computer without internet.

I've got a fresh install of Natty on my Dell Studio 17 laptop. The screen on the laptop doesn't work so I have it plugged into my Panasonic TV with an HDMI cable. The only problem is that the TV is not showing the outer edges of my desktop. So, I can't see the "Applications" menu, for example, or the button to click to Logout. I've messed with every setting available on the TV and nothing has helped. Can anyone provide any advice? I've started messing around with xrandHere is the output of 'xrandr':

I tried to do a scheduled software update several times today (8/20/11) and nothing seems to download, though I do get the "Downloading" PackageKit dialog message (the System Monitor shows practically no network activity). In between tries I downloaded some 600 MB .iso files (about 10 minutes each) so I know my internet is working properly. That leaves either PackageKit got hosed in my last update, or servers are down.

everything else seems well with my FC13-x86-64 except firefox (3.6.4 and earlier versions too) VERY frequently hangs the whole system. only the mouse still working, keyboard not responding to ctrl-alt-del, ctrl-alt-function or any other key and even num-lock won't turn the led on. system is still remotely accessible through ssh so I can issue a reboot. same thing may have occurred with thunderbird but only once or twice and probably firefox was also running then. no problems so far with google chrome (but I have no flash plugin for that). FC5-x86-32 on my old PC has never had any of these problems.

I have an old Compaq Pro desktop with Ubuntu 8.04 installed. been using it without a major problem until four days ago. When I attempted to boot all I got was a screen with green vertical lines at the top and horizontal yellow, red, and orange lines below that. Since I recently had downloaded a new kernal I tried to use another kernal but that got the same result. I tried to boot with a live cd and finally got it to boot in low graphics mode. I have also tried to boot into the safe mode and tried the recovery option.got the following warning:xserver-xorg postinst warning: overwriteing possibly customized configuration file; backup in /etc/X11/xorg.conf .20100323151611I have no idea what that means or what I should do. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I would really hate to wait the 30 some odd days for 10.04 to come out.

So this just started a few days ago... maybe 7 at the most.
I am working along, and screen goes black, or just freezes... the lights on my laptop start blinking and becomes everything becomes unresponsive.
I have noticed it is usually when I am Using Firefox and Flash content. I have also noticed it happens when using Deluge, but it usually takes 5 minutes to kick in.
I am using firefox at the moment, but I am sure if I load up a ..... video, it will lock up on me again.

Just upgraded from FC11 to 13 a few days ago and came across a wierd problem with firefox. When downloading files thru firefox, Firefox starts consuming more and more memory/cpu cycles until the system hangs. This only happens when downloading thru firefox. Doesnt take too long either. Otherwise everything else works fine.

I heard all about the awesomeness of Firefox 4 and decided to ditch the old Fedora default one (3.6.16). I put the firefox folder in the .mozilla directory and I run it from there. The problem is that the only plugin I have is the 64-bit Flash plugin (because it is the only one in the plugins folder in the .mozilla directory). I have no idea where the other plugins for things like Adobe Reader an VLC are. If anyone knows Fedora well, I want my plugins to work in the new Firefox.
