View 8 RepliesI've been getting annoyed with the way that Firefox opens files for me. I used to have it so that they would come up with a window that asked whether I wished to save files onto the hard drive or simply open them. When choosing to Save, they would go to my Desktop. Because I mainly save files from my Uni website, they are generally .pdf files. N for some reason, they open in the Firefox window, so then I have to go to File, Save, then choose where I want to save it. It would be more efficient if it worked the way it did originally. How can I get the settings back to the way they were? I am running Ubuntu 9.04 and Firefox 3.0.19. Because I use a shared computer, I'm not sure whether the version of Firefox has been changed.

I mean, it's easy enough to force the permissions back, but I shouldn't have to.The music is on a storage drive (internal) auto-mounted at boot in ext3nd this was happening on 8.10 and is currently happening on 9.10.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using Thunderbird 3.x on Ubuntu (Linux). When I save an attachment to my computer, the file gets saved with only the owner (me) having read/write permissions. In other words, the file gets saved as -rw
Frequently, I want my group to have permission, or to give read permission to everyone. Is there a way to do change Thunderbird's default file permissions so I don't have to do this manually every time?
I have an Ubuntu development server and a Windows 7 workstation. I use Windows Gvim to edit files on the linux server, over a samba connection.Saving files from Windows change the Linux permissions in weird way depending on the Windows app I'm using and also depending on whether there's a file extension or not. Here are some testsNo extension; Notepad2: 644 to 764
matt@mattserver ~ % ls -l testfile
-rw-r--r-- 1 matt matt 0 2011-05-28 07:09 testfile

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am new to linux in general and have an older sysytem that I successfully partitioned to run ubuntu, kubuntu, and windoze. I was a casual mac user before thius and am used to packages--so I have no exp. installing tarballs. I am trying to install xampp and successfully downloaded it, but now am at a loss as to what to do--nothing seems to be working. I am using firefox which for some reason is not saving to downloads even though that is what I have set in pref. Is there a way I can use apt-get for this (although my understanding of that isn't much better. I can't seem to find the relevant information in documentation.
View 1 Replies View Relatedsporadically and sometimes, right click image > save image as does not work, ie no response. If I close FF and restart, more often than not it does (same target image, natch) Anyone else have any experience here? I have tried the "advanced options" in java script under edit> prefs, but the problem persists. Would there be any point in starting from CLi and looking at/posting the output?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI dual boot Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7 and am running EXT4 file system on the ubuntu partition.
When I try to save files in Ubuntu to the mounted drives that contain Windows and other data, it writes successfully but when I try to view it in Windows 7, I cannot see the written files.
I am wondering if there is already a feature, and if not, then a way to save any open files before a shutdown occurs?
I use xfce4 battery plugin and there is the option to invoke a shutdown whn the batt. hits critical percentage, but I would like to be able to run something at the low percentage stage to save any open files in case the critical stage is reached. I have had no luck googling any solutions or potential solutions.
Not sure if I am doing this correctly, just the obvious way I guess. I have dual boot with Ubuntu 10.10 and Win7 x64. They are on their own partitions, Windows on NTFS and Ubuntu on ext4.
Every now and then when I am in my Ubuntu system, I will load/save files from the NTFS partition. So I mount the NTFS by just going on places and clicking on the drive.
This morning I loaded some video files and converted them to wav files in Kdenlive, saving them back to NTFS. I then right clicked on the Windows drive and un mounted it, no problem.
Re-booting into Windows I found that the files were not there! Well one of the files was, but it was corrupt and not complete.
Looking in Ubuntu, the files were not there either.
I have seen this behaviour in the past, but never thought anything of it, just that maybe I hadn't un-mounted the drive correctly, but this was not the case this time. Does Ubuntu have a /very/ delayed write to NTFS? I assumed that if it un-mounted correctly then everything had finished writing?
If I DL something from the Internet It askes were to save. This is normal however even though my 2 computers are nicely networked I can't seem to navigate to the network to save onto the other computer.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a really nuisance problem. I have two NAS servers - different makes - both of which work perfectly under Windows XP. I can write new files, save existing files without error. Both servers have drives formatted to FAT32 - the only option - although the OS's are almost certainly an embedded Linux. Both units are recognized by Ubuntu 10.04 - and I can write new files to them both without problem (although the directory does not refresh - I have to reload it). I can also delete without problems. If I try and save over an existing file I get an error "Unexpected error: Invalid argument" - I presume the implied delete is failing but am not sure. New files also seem to be saved with the Read Only flag set.OK - I can work round the problem by deleting the files (that works OK) and saving them anew. Works fine - but a backup is impossible as any changed file will give rise to the error.I have tucked both drives into the hosts files in /etc - although I attach by IP address (which is fixed) anyway.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI use RipperX to rip CD's on my Ubuntu home server. The files it rips and encodes are in mp3 and they are all fine.
However the system is not saving id3 information for the final two tracks, despite having all the information.
You can see what I'm describing in these images: [URL]
If you want more information just say, I'll get back to you.
I just switched to a faster isp with monthly usage limits. When I install a program using Synaptic, where are the install files stored? I'd like to save them for future use. Also, I'm downloading Conky right now to monitor usage.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have to use and update many documents on a network share in my organization. I am using OpenOffice 3.2 (latest and Greatest). When I go to the document that I need via the network share, I can open up the document no problem at all but the minute I attempt to save it, it will freeze and I have to:
PHP Code:
pgrep soffice| xargs -i kill -9 {}
Kill it. To get it to work I have to save the document from a .docx format to a .doc format then all works well. Unfortunately, all of my coworkers use the latest and greatest of MS Office.
the permissions for my home directory were accidentally changed from 'access files' to 'create and delete files', and I changed them back, but ever since then I am not able to change any preferences/settings at all. power management, themes, panels, emerald, anything. my user account is supposed to be the administrator, and all the user privliges are checked. how to get control of my computer back?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI download a file to my laptop desktop, it saves above and behind the panel menubar (Applications / Places / System). As such, the files aren't easily accessible. How might I ensure that downloaded files are visible on the screen and not 100px above & behind it? Perhaps related, I've got a second monitor attached to the laptop (primary). It seems this second monitor's resolution is affecting where downloaded files are put...out of sight.
Primary laptop: Dell Vostro 1310. Resolution = 1280x800
Secondary monitor: Acer 19-inch LCD Flat Panel. Resolution = 1280x1024.
I've tried all the settings in Monitor Preferences to no avail. Searched Google without luck. Currently on Ubuntu 10.10 and the system is (according to Update Manager) up-to-date.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI use netbeanse as a development suite, but to edit/save file correctly it should run with root permissions. When I do run file or debug them, it launches firefox, but due netbeans have been opened by root user, it tries to open firefox as root also, and it seems to be something that should not do. Either I now upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala and sudo firefox does not work anymore, giving me no errors even from CLI.
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust over the past few days Firefox 3.5.8 now starts as soon as the desktop has loaded - it's not set to do this in 'Startup Applications' - how do I stop it starting on boot? Also, over the same period, if I click a javascript link, nothing happens, it no longer opens the relevant page or image; so I click it again and still nothing, however several minutes later the page/image may open, but not always. Also if I close Firefox, then later click a link in an email it no longer opens Firefox - I then have to go into 'System Monitor > Processes', find and then 'end process' for Firefox (cause it's sleeping) before I can actually start it.I've gone in Synaptic and 'reinstalled' Firefox, but it made no difference. I cleared the cache and all cookies as well - could something have got into Firefox, and if so how can I fix it ?

When I click on a link in say Evolution, in workspace 1, the page will open in an open Firefox in a different workspace, say 7, but a item will appear on the panel of my current workspace. When I click that item I will be moved to the workspace 7. I find this very confusing.I would prefer the behaviour to be, if there isn't a Firefox in the current workspace to start one and use that rather than reuse one in a different one.
View 1 Replies View Relatedwhen I open a Firefox session and I right click an image and select "Save Image As" nothing happens meaning no file window opens to save the image. To allow firefox to save an image I have to exit out of it and reopen it. Since I have ran a couple difference distributions over the past week and I have not had this issue before then I am pretty sure it is an OpenSuse only issue. Also another Opensuse issue only in firefox seems to be the inline spell check is underlining words at random that are spelled correctly and incorrectly.
