View 1 Replies View RelatedAlready in Ubuntu 10.10 I faced some odd behaviour after the login, e.g. the icons for maximizing or closing were gone, but after reloading with compizfusion icon, they appeared back (for both compiz and metacity).
After the update to 11.04, certain applications just crashes permanently after some time, like Firefox, Synaptic or Libreoffice (now gone). Additionally the screen shows sometimes orphaned pixel or logs out completely.
I'm using an Intel graphic cards from the notebook Hp 2740p. I couldn't find any errors in the log viewer and also a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04 in Unity and Gnome as well in Linux Mint, couldn't solve the problem. I also deleted config folders from my homefolder, like .gnome, .gconf, etc. to see if there would be a change. But this strange behaviour still persists.
As I setup a new user the behaviour was gone for sometime, but came finally back after some days, without messing around with any configurations.
Anywhere from 2 -> 6 times a day, my computer will freeze up. If any audio was playing, it will repeat the last few seconds over and over again.
I've been dealing with the problem for a couple of months now, with no solutions.
It can happen anytime, but it tends to happen on my screensaver about 50% of the time after I've locked my computer and during the early morning (12am onwards) when I have a full-screen video playing, but it's never done it at night in the same circumstances.
I am confused and just can't figure out the problem.

Mac Mini (2010) 2.4GHz
8GB RAM
Dual 24" Monitors @ 1920x1080.
Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit.
I just upgraded to Natty on a (almost brand new) HP pavilion dm4t. I'm finding that it crashes pretty frequently, in a variety of ways that might or might not be related.
1) Sometimes (every 2-3 days) it will just blink out and go back to the login screen. This usually happens within a minute or so of logging in. If I log in again after this, it will usually crash again. A restart of the system typically will make the problem go away for at least a few sessions.
2) If I leave the computer on for a while, the screensaver will freeze and nothing can get me back to the desktop. Processes seem to still be running behind it (I left some music playing once and the music continued to play, but the screen was black and I couldn't get back to my desktop - I had to do a hard shutdown)
3) A perhaps unrelated problem, every ten sessions or so when I log in the indicator applet will be gone and an error telling me that indicator applet failed to load (or something to this effect)
Btw I'm using ubuntu classic rather than unity (just because I like it better). I haven't used Unity enough to know whether these problems also occur with it.
Recently pcmanfm crashes more frequently then before. Each time it occurs, I cannot open another instance of it until I reboot my desktop/laptop. But this is not possible if I happen to be doing some long computational work. I have been using it with fluxbox for two years already, and previously I simply reopen another new window and get on with my work.

Apt-get also takes ages to unpack stuff when I'm upgrading/installing something, that might be related. According to top there is barely any cpu usage at all during these freezes. I had this issue on a stock Lucid install. When Maverick came out, I tried that one, and the issue still existed. On a fully upgraded Maverick system, it's still there as well. Windows works without a hitch, as does Ubuntu running under a VM on windows.

I recently switched from windows 7 to ubuntu 10.10 on my Gateway NV56 laptop. I previously had used wubi on it and had no problems, but with this installation it frequently crashes to a black screen and I have to reboot via the power switch. alt+sys-req+REUISB does not work, and I have lost a lot of data to this.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded (via Ubuntuzilla) to firefox 3.5.7 and now, every single time I close Firefox, the program seems to crash without quitting completely.
First, I receive an error saying that the program will not close and asks me if I want to Force Quite or Wait for it to close on its own. This has been happening ever since I upgraded to Karmic and if I just wait it usually quits fully after a couple seconds.
Now what happens is this: the window still closes, but if I try to reopen Firefox then I get this error stating that Firefox is already open and therefore cannot be opened again. The only way to get back into Firefox is to restart the entire computer. (Incidentally, this is the same problem that occurs whenever I try to Force Quit Firefox)
This now happens every single time I "close" Firefox.
Does anyone know the source of this error? Or a workaround?

I'm not entirely sure what is causing these crashes, but they happen mostly when I'm running anything graphics related, especially games. Although the crashes haven't been isolated to those instances. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

For example Dolphin, Yast, Ocular and so on... so better say´d, only Thunderbird and Firefox still running. I dont get any Error Messages or something like this, when i start a Application there just pop´s the Program Bar in the Start Menu and then after that (normally the Window of the Program would be shown) it just disappears. Dumb on that is, that i even cant backup my Data, because Dolphin dont show up anymore.

I feel like I'm back in Windows land. Within an hour of my first load I had my very first Ubuntu total-lockup. Just like Windows. In the 18 months I'd been using Jackalope I had not had a single crash. Not one.
It's slow, jerky, and has odd freezes. Just like Windows. Applications randomly stop working and die. Just like Windows.
Is there any way to fall back to Jackalope or is there any hope of them fixing Koala? 'Cause this is wretched.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.04, up to date, 32 bits. I tried to open a huge (10.000 x 1.200 pixels approx) Wikipedia image, and everything crashed. Nor Firefox, Gnome or anything else responded from there. Not even ctrl+alt+del, ctrl+alt+backspace, alt+F2, etc. Only the mouse moves, but rather slowly.

I could NOT replicate the problem with Chromium. However, I am not sure if the issue is only firefox since it locks up everything in ubuntu.
When i click on firefox icon after ubuntu startup it opens for 1-2 seconds and then closes. I can open it normally after that (no crashing).

Recently my Firefox 5.0 started to crash randomly. This morning, it crashed twice within three minutes. I believe that it crashes mostly during loading something (such as a new tab), but it can also just crash when nothing is being done to it. I can be reading one page of text and it crashes. When it crashes, there is a "Submit a report" thing. When I click Restart Firefox, it doesn't. What I can think of is the use of Flash-aid and the addition of a 4GB bar of RAM. I re-executed Flash-aid because 1080p full-screen was choppy (still is). I don't think it is a Flash problem since with Gnash, Firefox also crashes. The RAM bar is a Lexar 4GB DDR3 SODIMM 1066-1333MHz. All other programs run correctly. I have re-installed Firefox, Firefox-branding and such in Synaptic. Still crashes.

Just over the past few days Firefox 3.5.8 now starts as soon as the desktop has loaded - it's not set to do this in 'Startup Applications' - how do I stop it starting on boot?Also, over the same period, if I click a javascript link, nothing happens, it no longer opens the relevant page or image; so I click it again and still nothing, however several minutes later the page/image may open, but not always.Also if I close Firefox, then later click a link in an email it no longer opens Firefox - I then have to go into 'System Monitor > Processes', find and then 'end process' for Firefox (cause it's sleeping) before I can actually start it.I've gone in Synaptic and 'reinstalled' Firefox, but it made no difference. I've installed SuSE 64 11.3 (with updates) as a new installation 4 times because of video driver problems. On the 3rd installation Firefox crashes. I had no difficulties with 11.2 with the same hardware. I followed CAF's suggestion to another user to add it to the repo list and run a zypper install. No difference. I've added no new hardware. I then re-installed SuSE and made no changes to any setting or driver, but again, no Firefox continues to crash.
