Mar 28, 2011I was wondering why my max resolution on my 22" LG Flatron M2262D screen is 1024 x 768? Just recently wiped off Windows and installed Ubuntu fully. - (Funny thing is, I didn't mean to. I deleted the partition by accident). Anyway, before I could get a bigger resolution on Windows with this screen? Only reason I'm using it is because my laptop screen is broke with a 'ink spill' screen. Could it be drivers need installing? If so, where could I download them from?

Feb 9, 2010I just did a clean install from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS to Ubuntu 9.10. I went to System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers to enable any drivers (mainly for my graphics card so I could run higher resolutions). Had two driver, one for my wireless network interface card and one for my graphics card (NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200). I enabled the drivers restarted and went to System -> Administration -> NVIDIA X Server Settings. The resolution was set to "Auto", which is 1280 x 1024 (max.) on my old CRT.
I've ran that resolution for a day now and it isn't as snappy as I'd like it to be (or as the exact same resolution was on 8.04). So I reverted back to 1024 x 768. Everything seems to be running as I'd hope under the lower resolution. The only problem I am running into now is when I restart NVIDIA X Server Settings changes back to "Auto" and automatically switches to 1280 x 1024. I've clicked "Save X Configuration File" thinking that might help retain the resolution I want after startup, but it just says "Failed to parse existing X config file '/etc/x11/xorg.confg'!"

OpenSUSE Install :: Taskbar Won't Adapt To 1024 X 768 Resolution?
Mar 16, 2011OpenSUSE 11.4 (x86) + KDE 4.6.0 starts up by default in the 1280x1024 screen resolution. Although this is very annoying it can be overcome. But when I change to 1024x768 resolution the Taskbar doesn't adapt to this and the icons bottom right in the system tray can not be seen anymore (they disappear beyond the right side of the monitor so to say).
I have installed the nvidia-gfx-kmp-default graphics driver for my old GeForce card. This problem also occurs with the default, but rubbish, Nouveau driver. In OpenSUSE 11.3 there was no problem at all with the same configuration.

Aug 27, 2011I recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.
From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

Aug 4, 2010Unfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue

Aug 25, 2010i just installed 10.04.1 and have done a quick apt-get update/apt-get upgrade.the problem is i'm running a 1920 x 1080 display using a geforce gtx460, yet the screen is cropped in at 1280 x 1024. i have the option to go lower only.i first tried to install the nvidia binary in the old-fashioned way of (system > administration > hardware drivers) but this reported that there are no proprietary drivers in use and there was no option to 'switch one on'.i guess my hardware is too new so i want to install the drivers available at nvidia's website (256.44). this adds support for my gpu.
i tried to install these by exiting x but this just resulted in some sort of system hang. the function keys on my keyboard seem to be 'non-functional' too, making a ctrl+alt+f1 not do what it should. i think this may be a problem with the mac keyboard i'm using.is this just a waiting game? can i get into a virtual console somehow else (perhaps during bootup)? is there a way i can exit x without the system hang? is there another way of installing some workable drivers? should i be altering my xorg.conf?

Oct 18, 2010I have a custom PC with a (nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x] (rev c1)) graphics card and a 17" Compaq MV720 CRT monitor. My graphics card/monitor combination is capable of resolutions up to 1280 X 1024.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64Bit, and the highest resolution available at Sysytem>Preferences>Monitors>Resolution: is 1024 X 768. I want to get the resolution up to 1152 X 864, which the card/monitor is capable of. I looked around the forum for a solution, but couldn't find a thread that explains exactly what I want to do. In the most previous version of Ubuntu that I used (9.10), I could generate an xorg.conf with Xorg, grab the (Monitor, Device, and Screen) sections, and use that with a few changes to create an xorg.conf to get the resolutions that I wanted. In 10.10, that no longer works. In fact, it won't even work without the changes. After placing the xorg.conf in /etc/X11, the PC will only boot up to a text CLI prompt to login. No GUI desktop.
My PC is a totally orthodox desktop, no dual boot, no Virtualbox. What do I have to do to get the resolutions above 1024 X 768?

My screen resolution doesn't have an option higher than 800x600, so everything looks super zoomed in. Other threads tell me to edit xorg.conf, which I did (probably incorrectly). The result was the computer had mega problems when I restarted it, and when it finally got back to the desktop it didn't give me any other options for screen resolution. Also it says I'm in low graphics mode.

Feb 14, 2011I recently upgraded my desktop pc from 10.04 to 10.10 and ran into a tad of trouble. After I attempted to login from the GDM, something caused the system to crash and return to the GDM. So, I got my laptop out, did some googling, and decided to delete ~/.config/monitors.xml to try and reset the resolution. That got me to the Desktop, at which point I was greeted by more display issues.
The point at which the computer normally goes idle seems to crash and return it to the GDM as well. Needless to say, I disabled the idling/password prompt setting to prevent crashes every five minutes. Anyway, the prevailing problem is that I can't change the resolution itself -- as that seems to cause the same issue.

1360x768 16:9
I have an HP Compaq dx2200 I have a Viewsonic VA 702b Monitor Did all possible update, no help. Even tried to use the "additional drivers" option and none were shown.

Apr 1, 2011I cannot get my screen resolution to change from 1600x1200. This is a new install of Ubuntu 10.10 and the desired option ( 1024x768 ) is listed under System/Preferences/Monitors. Changing the resolution and clicking Apply results in a screen refresh, but the resolution remains at 1600x1200.

Apr 8, 2011I just got a DVI cable so I can have a dual monitor setup, (one VGA, one DVI monitor), and when the DVI cable is plugged into our 20" widescreen, the correct resolution (1680 x 1050), a "No Signal" error message will appear on the monitor. When the resolution is lower with the DVI cable, it will show up, but everything will be a bit bold and blurry. When I plug our VGA cable into the VGA slot in this monitor, everything shows up fine.
