Ubuntu :: Stacking Common Windows On Taskbar
Jun 18, 2010
It is hard to explain this using words. Suppose you have multiple OpenOffice documents open. Instead of spreading the OpenOffice documents out on the taskbar, I want to combine it into one. I want to select, which window I want within the OpenOffice documents group vertically.

In Windows 7 when you hover over an open application in the taskbar, it shows a small image of that application. Is there a way this can be done in Linux?

I am running a fresh install of Lucid 64bit with Desktop effects enabled and the latest driver from Nvidia 195.36.24 (but had the problem also with the ubuntu repo driver. The issue can be reproduced as follows. Set AWN to group common windows (I believe this is the default) Open several gedit windows (or any other app) Then open firefox and maximize the window (or simply move the window so it's directly above your gedit dock icon.) In the AWN dock, select the gedit icon and try and select an open gedit window. When you click the gedit icon in the AWN dock, you'll see a popup with all of your gedit windows. If you move the mouse to attempt and select one of the gedit's, the menu disappears and you can't select anything.

Is there a free image stacking application in Linux. I do a lot of macro work and I even use stacking for larger pieces of work as well. It allows me to create a better, larger DOF than you would normally get with a Macro lens, which tends to be shallow. If you have never heard of stacking images it is like stitching images together for a panorama image. Only this works by selecting the sharpest parts of the image. The images are stacked up on top of eachother, the software selects the sharpest parts of each image and the joins them all up making your object hopefully sharper. You need a tripod to do this work.

I really like the way the Windows 7 taskbar icons looks. I'm looking for a way to make the taskbar icons bigger without increasing the taskbar size itself. I'm also looking for a way to show the icons only, without any text beside.

Is there is a way in compiz to open all the minimized windows in the taskbar? Since I want to use the "scale" feature in compiz for all of the windows. As what you already know is that, the "scale" feature only works for the open windows not the minimized ones. So I want a way to open all the minimized windows with a shortcut(using compiz or any thing else) and then use the scale feature again.

Todays update broke my display again. The windows are hanging off the left side of the screen.
Nvidia current correctly configured 1920x1080, xorg.conf seems ok too.
System - Administration - Additional Drivers shows nvidia current, but mentions that the driver is activated but not currently in use
How can I get Ubuntu to use this driver?

This guide isn't going to be updated anymore, as there is gNatty, and I've switched to Lubuntu. The reason? GDM kept crashing and issues kept coming up that reduced the overall functionality of my own computer. The PPA seems like it changes slightly to where things may break, if something does break, try to run: sudo apt-get install gnome-shell gnome-session again, as it looks like a lot of the time gnome-shell and gnome-session aren't being installed. FIX for issue opening certain applications (like games) Do the following in terminal:
Code:
echo "PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games"" | tee -a ~/.profile Logout and log back in and that should fix the issue. NOTE: You have to do this for each user that logs into the system if they can't access games or that. FIX for .ICEauthority issue! There's another method besides this one, and it involves just installing the following:

I was looking for a converter to use on common avi files and maybe some others and came across this thread. I followed it all the way to where it asks me to install ConvertIt by adding the repos and then running Synaptic. I found convertit and marked for install and clicked apply and got this error:
Code:
convertit:
Depends: gambas2-runtime (<2.1) but 2.13.1-1ubuntu1 is to be installed
Depends: gambas2-gb-qt (<2.1) but 2.13.1-1ubuntu1 is to be installed
So i check synaptic for that and i had them installed already from the guide. So i marked them all for reinstall since i installed them in the terminal the first time. Reinstalled and i still get the same error.
Any idea whats wrong? Or is there a better movie converter thats easier? I just want to re encode the files so the will play on my 360.

i have been trying to figure out how to get my CAC working on my laptop so i can log into service portal sites and do things while i am TDY that require CAC logins. I have followed this tutorial [URL], and i got as far as getting the module installed into firefox, but it wouldnt aknowledge my card being inserted and wouldnt prompt me to select a certificate or anything. Then i tried OpenSC, but for one it wouldnt acknowldege my card being inserted and the module wouldnt load in firefox.
I mainly want to use this for logging into AirForce Portal, DTS, and Webmail while im TDY so i dont have to find a GOV computer to do that stuff on. I would ultimately like to get it setup to where i can use my CAC to login to my laptop just like a Government computer, but if i cant do that right now i wont cry over it.
Im using a SCM SCR3340, i havent seen it on any supported hardware list yet, but so far coolkey and opensc have both detected my reader, just opensc didnt detect my card being inserted.

talking about dependencies issues, with the solution to first install texlive-base. I have now tried to remove all tex packages completely and reinstall them, starting with texlive-base, but I keep getting the same error. code...

When "installing" a program that basically just unpacks into a directory of your making. Is there a "common" place to create the directory? I usually end up making it my home folder, but that gets crowded.

I have two text files in the form:1 ItemA [value]2 ItemB [value]3 ItemC [value]Some of these items are common for both files, while others are missing from either one or the other.I want to compare the values for each common item in the two lists, but don't know how. I have a vague idea that probably grep might be useful, but I don't know how to use it for this purpose. So, to sum it up, what I would like to do is to take to text files containing lists and merge their common items into a third file in the form:
1 ItemA [value_from_list1] [value_from_list2]
2 ItemB [value_from_list1] [value_from_list2]
3 ItemC [value_from_list1] [value_from_list2]

I need to know what commands we have people run in the terminal in order to help them troubleshoot their issue. The reason being, is I was reading a thread where someone was stating about how they had to do all this and all that from a terminal and what not and that there should be a GUI Tool.
Well I'm going to make a GUI tool that allows them to obtain all the necessary information (and fixes are possible too) to help with their issue that they're currently having. For example: I know we run lsmod for sound issues, but what other commands do you have them run to check sound, video, network, etc. It will be made in wxPython so that it can be easily sent to others. If it becomes quite useful, then maybe we could get it in the repos.
