Ubuntu :: Is There 'common' Place To Create Directory?
Jun 18, 2011
When "installing" a program that basically just unpacks into a directory of your making. Is there a "common" place to create the directory? I usually end up making it my home folder, but that gets crowded.

I have 2 images stored temporarily in home folder totaling 21 gigs. I recieved warning stating that home disrectory is full.
I used gparted and resized extended partition and home partition. When I look at disk usage it still says that I'm maxed out in /home/edward. How do I increase my share as I have plenty of space. Or, can I create a place for storing images? Also the images were created and placed there using clonezilla.

I found it easiest to embed narp into the gtk+-2.0 installation because all I needed to do was tweak the Makefile.am and Makefile.in files and let configure do the rest. This is a hack. I've failed at getting my own makefiles to work.
Would anyone point me in the right direction on how to properly make an installer for Linux? Also, what is the correct/common directory tree for Linux software packages? Any more suggestions on proceeding with this project using community standards?

Ladies and gentlemen, I announce my 1st Qt4 application - Baires. Baires is a program that helps you easily resize bunch of pictures from one directory and place it to the same or another, with just one click (after initial setup, of course). With help of @microchip8, who built spec, RPMs and placed them to his repositories, I have now made an "official" download page at my site.

i would like to find and backup all *.mp4 files from /Pictures and its sub-directories and move them to a single directory on a remote. I can find and move the files but I don't want the directory structure...just the files to be placed in the remote directory.
To find my files I use
rsync -r -a -v -e "ssh -l user" --delete --include '*/' --include '*.mp4' --exclude '*' /home/drew/Pictures/ remoteserver:/Users/drew/mp4
but this creates all the subdirectories
I also tried
find ~/Pictures -name "*.mp4" -exec rsync -r -a -v -e "ssh -l user" --delete {} remote:/Users/drew/mp4 ;
This works but takes forever

I just upgraded to Fedora 15 from Fedora 14.... I think I could tolerate the new gnome shell if I could turn some of my tcl/tk and python gui scripts into things that I can store in the 'favorites' panel. In F14 I could create 'applets' ( with an Icon) that I could put in the top panel ( menu bar). Clicking on the icon would start the (gui based) script. Is there some way I can create a 'clickable' script in F15 and then place the result in the Favourites panel?

I want to copy all files with the name XYZ* into one folder. The problem is that the files are in different subfolders and that not even the depth of the folder structure is the same for all files. Luckily, at least each file has a unique name.
Of course, I thought about the cp command but I guess the depth of the folder structure needs to be the same for this to work.

I am a student studying computer science course.
Well, I am facing problem when doing lab questions.
I must use DLXLinux bundled in Bochs (bochs.sourceforge.net).
I am required to use the /usr/local directory.
In /usr directory, there is no directory named 'local' but there is one thing called 'local@'. So, when I try to use mkdir command to create 'local' directory in /usr , there are error "cannot make directory.....".
Look at my screenshot at [url].

It seems like it's probably from this part of .bashrc:

Are there any other archiving tools than tar that preserve Linux file permissions and user/group flags? I want to create archives of a directory tree on my ubuntu box. The directory trees are large, a first run with tar cvpzf archive.tgz /home/foo/bar yielded a 5GB archive. I also want to keep all permissions and other flags and special files.I'm fine with a 5GB archive, however to look inside that archive -- since it is a compressed tar archive -- the whole 5GB have to be decompressed first! (Or so it appears when opening it with the archive viewer -- I'm happy to be corrected.)So I need a way to "backup" a directory (tree) while preserving full filesystem attributes and right and creating an archive with an "index" that hasn't to be decompressed for browsing its contents. An archive is either a single file, or a (small) set of files that carries full and complete information within this file/s. That is, it can live on any filesystem (size permitting), it can be burnt onto a DVD, you can split it (after which the point of this question is really lost - but still), ...

I have a small ubuntu server setup and I would like to create a directory that can be written to by a select number of users. I have a backup directory setup and I want to enable my account as well as three others to be able to read/write to that directory. So far I haven't had any luck.
The owner of the backups folder, a directory on a separate disk mounted under /srv/storage, was owned by root and under the root group. I added the group backups and then changed the backups directory group to backups. I then used chown to change the backups directory to 775 to enable group members to write to it. I then tried to touch a file in the backups folder but no such luck. I did notice that when I run groups, my user account isn't shown as belonging to backups but is shown under the /etc/group file. I even made sure the GID of backups is in fact below 1000.
Anyone have an idea on how to create a shared directory that everyone can create, modify and delete any file? I believe my problem is related to the fact that root is the owner of the backups directory.

I currently have an ASUS eebox which is running XBMC Live which includes a stripped down version of Ubuntu. The computer will be used by various people within a teaching environment and I have successfully installed launchers for Openoffice which can be opened within XBMC.
I am trying to the make the experience for the end user as simple as possible as the vast majority will have never used Linux before. I want to get to a point where they can open Openoffice, plug in their USB stick and navigate quickly to their files. At the moment when the program is launched and I try and navigate for a file it automatically starts in the Home Folder of xbmc. So I have navigate up a couple of times, then find the /media directory where the USB stick has been mounted and so on. What I was hoping to do is create a shortcut within the Home Directory which takes you straight to the Media folder where usb is mounted.
I have already attempted and created a folder within the Home directory and called it usbpen.
I have then added the following line into fstab /media /home/xbmc/usbpen none bind 0 0
Now when I reboot the machine and navigate to the home/xbmc/usbpen folder I can see the Drive name of the USB device mounted in /media but I cannot navigate through any of the files, I am greeted with a read error message. So the shortcut is only allowing me to see the device name only.
be aware that due to running XBMC Live I do not have a Windows manager installed and therefore everything must be done through the terminal.
