Ubuntu :: Software Center Not Updating With Added PPA
May 15, 2011
Today I tried adding several pieces of software using PPAs. I was able to add the PPA through "Software Sources" in the Software Center Edit menu. One I added a PPA, it wold show a running task for the update, but when I search for the software I want to get from the PPA in software center, it does not show up in the search results. However, I CAN add the software through the command line using apt-get.
For example, to add the QtQr application, I added ppa:qr-tools-developers/qr-tools-stable to Software Sources, and searched for 'qtqr.' There were no results. But I was able to 'sudo apt-get install qtqr' and it installed fine.Am I missing a step if I want to install stuff from new PPAs in Software Center?
I recently had an issue with the Network Manager Applet 0.8, and Indicator Applet 0.3.7 (applets were locked to panel and disappeared for no obvious reason could not get them back using add to panel or looking in applications, places, or system). I removed said applets using Ubuntu Software Center and reinstalled. Where do I find the reinstalled software (applets) so I can add it back to panel?
I have a 3dsp pci wifi card, and the last kernel it supports is Ubuntu 10.04 2.6.32-(21-24) I want to update but dont want to accidentally update the kernal.
But it is not doing what I intended, which was the partition showing up in my Places menu. It also doesn't appear in my /media folder. How to alter the command above so I could have the harddisk open and writable in my Places folder just like my system harddisk?
This probably something simple but it's got me foxed. I have a desktop and a laptop both running 10.04 great no issues, I have my music and movies on the desktop and stream wirelessly to my laptop. All worked great until I started to run out of space on the base units hard drive, no problem I added a second 500gig sata drive internally and moved the music and movie folders across. Now although I have marked them as shares I access them remotely, the second drive has to be mounted and appears almost like a external drive.
I have added a new sata HDD and this caused my fstab to becoming corrupted. I opened the fstab within a live cd and I changed it to the new setup. But I am still getting an error.
My old setup: sda on PATA Windows 7 Linux /root Linux swap
I have learned a little about LVM through tinkering but on my new setup I am having trouble. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 Server with Gnome desktop 64 bit. I started with a 2TB HD and setup LVM with a LV for my data ("Storage) that mounts at /storage. That is full so I then added a second drive 500GB, formatted, added to VG and then extended the LV "Storage" with the 500GB partition. Now the LV reads as ~2.2TB which is right. Everything is successful up to this point. Except now when I go to the mounted LV at /storage Ubuntu shows it as full and only as ~1.7TB. The 500GB were never added!
The newest kernel in the repositories is currently 2.6.32-24, while on [URL]... you can already download a .deb of the 2.6.35 kernel. Why does it take so long for new kernels to be added to the repositories?
I'm currently learning how to program in PHP i have recently installed LAMP server and apache2 and MySQL, i have run a bunch of commands, so i can really remember them all..the ones i can remember is:
Code: apache2 php5-mysql libapache2-mod-php5 mysql-server sudo tasksel install lamp-server sudo apt-get install apache2 and when i entered url in my browser bar i got a screen saying it worked but no content has been added.
I tried put my test file (called index.php) into /var/www/ still not worked renamed it to index.html still not worked.tried url and with index.html wasn't working.
i woke up today to try find out what was wrong. BUT NOW I CAN'T ENTER url.I got a "server not found" screen like when you enter an incorrect adress
i tried to restart apache using:
Code: sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart but get's
Quote:
* Restarting web server apache2 apache2: Syntax error on line 233 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Syntax error on line 12 of /etc/apache2/conf.d/index.php: Expected </?php> but saw </div> [fail].
wondering if it's possible to add a link to a file in the Places Menu? for example a link to a Writer file I use a lot. I see how to add folders, but is it possible to add files?
I have been using Ubuntu since 8.04. I am about to receive a new PC made with the new Intel i7-2600 processor. I want to use it for video editing in Ubuntu but would like to keep the Win install also. The PC has a 1TB drive with Win7 installed. I want to add an 32GB SDD drive as my boot drive with Ubuntu 10.10-64. I want to add a 3rd drive - 1 TB for data store of large video files.
Questions: 1. do U64 and W64 play well together? 2. Can U64 boot from the SSD drive? 3. Should I install Grub on the ssd?
After installing Kubuntu 11.04, the system tray has gone wild. It contains network manager, volume etc. icons, but applications cannot add theirs. For example Skype status icon positions itself in the top left screen corner; Pidgin icon floats in a small window on the desktop. What could be wrong?
Have amd64 with 8.10 upgraded twice to 9.10 that hangs at "mountall:job failed to start, could not access PID files---ect,ect,starting timidity--alsa midi emulation" after installing ultimate 2.0 (8.10) as the secound OS. still will boot to ultimate 2.0, but booting to any version of original install results in above crash.Anyone know what is broken? Boot seems to start but then crashes at the above mentioned line.
I added RAM to my Acer (dual boot Windows XP / Ubuntu 9.1). Windows continues to work. Ubunty will no longer recognize the internet connection. I don't know if adding the memory is what did it, but I am puzzled why I can use the ethernet card from Windows but no longer from Ubuntu.
I am running Ubuntu Server and I recently added a new hard drive to the mix. Not replacing the old one, but adding a second one. What I want to know is how to I access that hard drive? I know in the desktop version it auto adds it, but not in the server version I checked my media folder.I installed it to be my new Samba share hard drive. So how to I get at it to use it?
I recently formatted my HDD and installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 x64. This is actually the 4th install in the past week because I was testing some things. But I had this problem on at least the previous install which made me want to start fresh again. The problem I'm having is Ubuntu will not boot if I add any of my drives to fstab. If I leave it with the standard proc, /, and swap lines it works fine. As soon as I add a line for one of my RAID arrays or an NTFS formatted partition the system hangs on bootup. It doesn't matter if I have the extra drives operating or not.
The last thing I see before it hangs is: Code: /dev/sda1: clean, 69351/4358144 files, 583945/17401600 blocks Here is what the fstab currently looks like:
The other two lines which also made it hang included one which was almost exactly the same as the /dev/md0 line except it was md1 with a different mount point and another which used a UUID and was ntfs-3g. I know they work because all 3 of them were mounted by "mount -a" after putting them into fstab and they're pretty much the same as what I was using with 9.04 server.
I just downloaded Arista to convert avi's to mpegs for DVD's and also to view on a mobile device.I add a file "movie.avi" as the source and device as DVD and then click "add to queue" and the file appears in the queue but nothing happens. Also I believe that I have now downloaded all of the necessary gstreamer packages including the ugly multiverse.
Never really used Gwibber before and I'm rather lost here. Whatever I do I can't seem to get anything to actually work. I'm not getting any error messages, but my Gwibber window remains blank no matter how many accounts I'm adding...
Facebook - I click add "add", I select Facebook, I enter my details and they successfully authorize my account, but the account is never added to the list. After closing the accounts window it's completely gone.
Twitter - Click add just like with Facebook, enter my details and it's added to the list. When I close the accounts window it shows up to the left of my main screen like it's suppose to. I notice Gwibber is refreshing, but nothing appears! Completely blank screen, completely empty inbox. I can type an update, but when I click send it's just cleared. Nothing is updated and nothing appears on my Twitter profile.
I try entering a phony account and it's the same deal. No error messages, Gwibber is refreshing but nothing is appearing.
Flickr - All I can do here is to enter my username. I don't know what's suppose to show up in my inbox, but again, nothing. No error, no feedback, not messages... nothing.
I had to install Ubuntu 10.10 5 times before the boot problem was fixed, but only now to find that the Nvidia GE Force 3 Ti200 video card is NOT supported by the current Nvidia drivers and the legacy Nvidia 96 video drivers has a known bug which may never get fixed.Currently I am running the 1024 x 768 screen size under Nouveau, but how can I change this to 1920x1080 ? Will creating an xorg.conf file work?I did have the GE Force 3 supporting the new 1920x1080p monitors under VGA mode and the screen looked fantastic in the past.
I was able to synch my folders to Ubuntu One.However, when I add any new files to one of the synched folders, it is not synching up to Ubuntu One. I've tried re-synching the folder where I place the file and all I get is the circular arrow with the ! in it. I've also tried disconnecting and connecting in the Device tab on "Ubuntu One Preferences". Am I missing a procedure here or is this a bug? I would hope that adding, removing, or updating files would automatically be synched.
My understanding is that when one installs Adobe Reader the browser plugin automatically gets added. For some reason the Adobe browser plugin isn't working in Firefox on my Ubuntu 10.10 desktop. The plugin doesn't show up in Tools Add-ons or Tools -> Manage Content Plug-ins. It works fine on my laptop with the same versions of Ubuntu, Adobe Reader (9.4.2-0maverick1), and firefox (3.6.17).
Starting firefox from a terminal yields messages that are probably illuminating to some: Code: $ LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /opt/google/picasa/3.0/lib/npPicasa3.so [/opt/google/picasa/3.0/lib/npPicasa3.so: cannot open shared object file: Permission denied] 2.4+ kernel w/o ELF notes? -- report this *** NSPlugin Viewer *** ERROR: /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so: failed to map segment from shared object: Permission denied This message caused me to stumble onto the readme file, /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Browser/HowTo/ENU/Browser_Plugin_HowTo.txt, which encouraged me to run the script /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Browser/install_browser_plugin.
I ran it in the local mode, and it created the directory ~/.mozilla/plugins and the file nppdf.so in it. Alas, it didn't work, complaining that, Code: $ LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /home/clarkb/.mozilla/plugins/nppdf.so [/home/clarkb/.mozilla/plugins/nppdf.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32] and again, Code: *** NSPlugin Viewer *** ERROR: /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so: failed to map segment from shared object: Permission denied
Next I removed the plugins directory I'd created, and, following an Internet hint, I tried the command: Code: nspluginwrapper -i /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so This didn't work either, again complaining that it "failed to map segment..." How I can get the Adobe browser plugin to work? I'm almost sure that it worked not long ago.
Other o/s because I plan to turn that machine into a Xen server.
Unfortunately I don't have much exper building computers/ hardware. What I'm wondering is whether the number of devices (like hard drives and optical drives, etc) is a function of what the mobo can support; or, if the bays are there and the cable has enough plugs I can just go for it.Specifically I'm trying to have 3 disks and one optical drive. The machine happens to have been a media center version desktop so it has this like 9 in 1 card reader thing in it but I don't think it uses that flat cable for data transfer anyhow. It looks to be connected differently.
I added Kubuntu-Desktop components to my Ubuntu 10.04 system using Synaptic Pkg Mgr, with the mistaken expectation that I would then be able to toggle between Ubuntu and Kubuntu Desktops. Of course, when adding Kubuntu-Desktop components, the dependencies feature brought in around 8 or 10 items.
I tried to undo all of this, but I fear I may have removed one or two Kubuntu named packages which may be part of the original Ubuntu installation.
Also there remains a gaggle of applications, such as Dolphin, KNetwork Mgr, Konqueror, just to name a few.
The two-fold question is, (1) How can I get back as closely as possible, to my original, pure Ubuntu installation, short of a complete re-install; and (2) Is there a document out there which lists all of the packages that come standard with the Ubuntu installation.
I re-added Wine to my application menu, but the winebrowser doesn't work. When I click it, then it just does nothing. The command related to the button is
Code: xdg-open /.wine/dosdevices/c:
When I paste that into the terminal I got "No such file or directory", but when I normally browse the folders then it is there...
