This probably something simple but it's got me foxed. I have a desktop and a laptop both running 10.04 great no issues, I have my music and movies on the desktop and stream wirelessly to my laptop.All worked great until I started to run out of space on the base units hard drive, no problem I added a second 500gig sata drive internally and moved the music and movie folders across.Now although I have marked them as shares I access them remotely, the second drive has to be mounted and appears almost like a external drive.

What I am tring to do is give all users of group users rwe any files/directories of a samba share execpt for the top level.Top Level cotains a number of folders and a readme file and should be r-eSublevel should be rwe including files/dir they did not create.I'm am familure with chmod/chgrp but not sure how to do this.

Q: How do I mount a CIFS share so that my user stevej has all rights to it?
Summary: I can mount the share as root.
mount.cifs //10.x.x.x/Data /home/stevej/Synology/Data/ --verbose -o user=stevej
Using Dolphin in Super-User mode, I can copy files and directories from the share to itself with no errors. Using Dolphin in Normal-user mode. I get the failure "Could not change permissions for...". The file is copied, but its owner,timestamp and permissions are wrong. If a subdirectory is involved, the copy aborts.
Using Windows XP I can copy files and directories from the share to itself with no errors.
Testing: If I mount with uid and gid, then my normal user can not access the share.
mount.cifs //10.x.x.x/Data /home/stevej/Synology/Data/ --verbose -o user=stevej uid=stevej gid=users

Synology DS211 - There are 2 users on it. One of which is stevej and the other is julie. Rights RWX are applied to the users and the group called users. All files have stevej as the owner and users as the group with RWX Opensuse 11.4 - There are 2 pc's. One is run as stevej. The other pc runs as julie Windows 2000 - Runs as stevej and maps to the share as stevej.
Works as expected Windows XP - Runs as julie and maps the the share as julie. Works as expected Ultimately, I want the shares to automount at boot, or login and give the user full access. I have been to Swerdna's page and done as much as I can, but still no luck.

I have a samba shared folder in my flash disk. Yesterday I installed ubuntu 11.04 and now sharing is not working any more. I do the usual procedure (that worked so far), I right click my folder > sharing options and tick "share this folder" as well as "Allow others to create and delete files in this folder" but I dont get the usual messages asking to add permissions automatically.When I try to mount my folder in another pc with linux, I get permission denied and that the folder is only readable and in another, windows cannot find the network path to my folder.My folder has about 10.000 files. asking to add permissions automaticallyI created another folder on the same flash and when I create share I get the message asking to add permissions automatically but it is not visible either. I even cant see my folder in "my places" > network, so it is not a matter of the mounting command

I'm trying to set up the following "server" system. (I say "server" because I'm really running ubuntu-desktop 10.04 LTS):
I have set up Samba and allowed guest access to my /media/Share/data using Windows 7. Everything works great, I can create folders, add files, etc. However I noticed that when I add files or folders via my mapped drive in Windows 7, it defaults to permissions that do not allow Deluge to access them. Deluge can now access the files. I don't want to have to modify permissions every time I add a new torrent to Deluge's watch folder which is /media/Share/data/Torrents.
How do I configure Samba (or linux, or windows) to give rwx permissions when I add a file or torrent via windows? And vice versa, if deluge downloads a file and moves it to completed downloads (which I haven't been able to get this far yet) will I be able to access it via Windows 7?

I cant change my user settings (password, login screen settings etc) after upgrading to 10.4 on my desktop pc. It says I don't have rights. I'm the only user, no other profiles. Otherwise seems to be working fine!

I have this group "cn=admins,ou=groups,dc=home,dc=com" And I've configured slapd in the new way so I'm not using slapd.conf (I think). First I thought about just modifying the files at /etc/ldap/cn=config/....... but that didn't work. How do I make that group into an admin-group with all the rights ?

I am only user on this ubuntu 10.10 install. I have admin rights but when I try to change some settings via Ubuntu tweak unlock or alter user and groups via advanced tab I never get the option to enter my password. I have added a new user 'tempuser' via safe mode and this user is administrator too but everything works fine from this user..
Results from $ grep admin /etc/group
lpadmin:105:heath,tempuser
admin:119:firstuser,tempuser,heath

I am thinking of making a fresh install if I cant sort this but would like to fix if possible.

I'm new to Ubuntu and wish to use the system in combination with Apache/mySQL/phpMyAdmin. I managed to get phpMyAdmin working for now. Also mySQL database seems to work. Only problem is Apache2. I can start the server and it is working. However in the folder /var/www/ where all site files are stored, I can not edit anything. I have been reading about sudo nautilus which did allow me to change administrator rights for the folder, but still I do not get it working to display other than the default index.html page. Is there a manual or quick solution for me so I can use apache with Ubuntu?

I've got a Dell laptop with a dual boot with Ubuntu and Windows 7, but I want windows 7 to be the default OS. I can't seem to find anything on Ubuntu with any information. I had a look at some forums and it said I need to go into admin, but I don't think I have it. Does anyone know how to get Admin rights and how to change the default OS?

I am semi new to linux and i was getting the hang of it until just recently. I'm trying to do some web design using php and mysql. In my reference material (the all in one desktop reference {for dummies}). At some point I needed to do something in /var/www but I ran into a permissions problem so I typed:

Afterwards in some subsequent step it suggested putting the files in /usr/src/mysql. Since I didn't have that folder I used mkdir and created it. Then I tried adding the files I needed to that folder and got denied on the grounds of not having permissions once again. So tried something like this:

453 sudo chmod 777 /usr/
It was a 755 originally but I couldn't copy those commands. It turns out as that I had two terminals open in different desktops. one of them was a root terminal. It was at this point that realized that I was in that root terminal and decided I was done 'learning' for the day. I decided to listen to some music (which is located in my windows partion) and ran into a problem. The prompt that pops up to normally asks me for my admin PW to mount the drive. Now just vibrates like an incorrect entry was received, says authentication error and says I am not authorized to mount that drive then I went back to terminal to fix it, and when I tried to elevate myself to SU:

I am on Ubuntu 10.04 using Rhythmbox (0.12. as my favorite music player. Right now I'm cleaning up my music collection. Part of this job is to ID3-tag multiple files (artist, genre, etc.).
On some files this works great, ob others it doesn't and I get a gstreamer error or I cannot even change the current ID3-tags. Regarding the last problem, I assume that the problem might occur because of missing rights to edit ID3-tags.
So my question is: What permissions should I give to my music collection, so Rhythmbox is able to edit the files?

I am trying to set up a simple home file-server for media and backups, using an old Atom board I had lying around and 1GB memory, so I don't want a full desktop. All goes well with installing server 10.10, using LVM for my data disk. However, I wanted some GUI tools since I am not familiar with the CLI, so I installed gdm, xorg, and gnome-core as suggested in some threads and forums.So far so good, it boots into the Gnome desktop, but I can't get sudo access with anything (synaptic, gkedit, etc.) - always "incorrect password". I am fine from the console; I reset my user password, no luck; I set up another admin user, and that also works in console but not the desktop.I have no idea where to go next and can't find anything that works in the forum

I have OpenVPN setup and running on my home server (Lucid Lynx). I move around alot and use Portable OpenVPN to connect to my home server. The problem is a lot of the computers I use I do not have admin rights to install the necessary routes to connect. So my question is this. Can OpenVPN be configured to use PPTP protocol? Because I have PortableVPN on my U3 flash drive and that VPN client does not need admin rights to run. If OpenVPN cannot do this, and from my understanding of its archetecture it cannot, but I must admit i am no authority on the matter. Can you suggest a workable solution, ie. install and setup this server software and use this portable client software.

My problem is that I want newly created files to be 775 but they are 644 according to ls -l tho user that created can still write to file while other user in same group can't.
Current umask is 002.
Can't findout how to get newly created files to be 775. What should i do make all new files created by a user to be 775?

I need to know how to configure firewall so my system cant be compromised...In windows my system was greatly compromised. keyloggers were installed without my approval and my desktop was taken on remote. What should I do so without my knowledge no software can be installed and i can close all ports and only open which ever port is required to open. I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and Samba 3.4. I've shared a folder and have accessed the share from a Windows 7 client. However, I've struggled to configure the share and folder so that the Win7 client can create files and/or folders in the share. Kept getting Permission Denied errors. Finally, (using Webmin) I set the permissions on the file folder so that "Other" had write access. I don't understand why this was necessary (and how unsecure this is). I already had the write access checkbox ticked for "User" but it wasn't enough.

1. I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 installed alongside Windows Home premium 7 on a Compaq CQ5110f with 2 dual processors, 320 GB HDD, 4 gb Ram, less than a year old/ It is giving me some error messages. It is wanting to lock the drive or various programs after being left unused for a few minutes, I have not found where I can disable this. I do not need passwords, really. I am the only user. I reinstalled it once, on top of itself (Ubuntu) and it worked fine briefly, then started doing it all again.
I use to sometimes install Ubuntu as a windows app. on a previous version, maybe 9.04 - 9.10, but think I can not do it on this version?
So, Can I install as WIndows app on this version of Ubuntu? CAn I install Ubuntu on one drive alone, and windows on the other drive alone, install both in same computer and get dual booting? I think before, to do that I had to reset boot drives in BIOS to whichever I had the OS I wanted to use?
Or MUST they be installed on same drive for dual booting to be available?
I am attaching screen shots of the messages I get, etc. I have tried to share files and folders, but it does not allow me to select Share this folder as some security thing is not installed, And the time I am required to enter password to use comp[iter after being idle a few minutes, seems to be tied to my folder, which is JOHN. I may have to think about removing Ubuntu from this drive, add a SATA drive and use two, one for Windows and one for Ubuntu.

When I insert some homemade DVDs of a friend, I can't view its contents. DVD works fine on windows XP, but not on opensuse. Dolphin gives an error: access denied to /media/071114_1638.I can't do a chown command because dvd is read-only...And when I do an ls -l I get:

Under Linux, I would like to be able to launch anything from command line in a "safe" environment, i.e. be assured that it can't read or write any file on my computer, and even better if it couldn't access the network.I thought about creating a user with reading rights only in the current folder (and nowhere else), and su to this user to launch the command, would this work ? And what about the network ?

I have been wondering if a guest user could compromise a machine which is set in the following way: they are not able to open the computer case, to boot from either an USB flash drive or an optical-disc drive, nor have any knowledge of the administrator-user password. Thus, they are landing on their guess account, and have to work their privilege escalation from there.
Therefore, what can they do to gain it? Could they download or otherwise install or run from a thumb drive an application that could be used to crack the administrator-user password? Because, it seems to me, could they enter into the system such a password-cracking application, the whole system could be compromised given the administrator-user password contains less than 9-or-so characters. What do you think? Can I lend my computer to anybody without them having beforehand gained my trust in them? Is the reasoning reasonable?
