Ubuntu Installation :: Can Other Screen Sizes Be Added To Nouveau
Oct 14, 2010
I had to install Ubuntu 10.10 5 times before the boot problem was fixed, but only now to find that the Nvidia GE Force 3 Ti200 video card is NOT supported by the current Nvidia drivers and the legacy Nvidia 96 video drivers has a known bug which may never get fixed.Currently I am running the 1024 x 768 screen size under Nouveau, but how can I change this to 1920x1080 ? Will creating an xorg.conf file work?I did have the GE Force 3 supporting the new 1920x1080p monitors under VGA mode and the screen looked fantastic in the past.

Will this come with updates or or do we need to move to F13 for 3D capabilities?

Although I managed fairly quickly to get 3D enabled on the GF 7600GS of my desktop, it took me longer to get 3D up on the GF 9650M GT of my Asus laptop M70Vn. Although I made extensive use of the numerous procedures outlined here, none of them worked and booting my laptop always ended up with me facing a jet-black screen and a completely inexpressive blinking white cursor. My solution was simple: I did not blacklist Nouveau and problems mysteriously disappeared.

I have a Dell precision 380 (system specs can be found here: [URL]. My system is set-up in dual boot configuration with Windows Xp x64 on one side of my HD and CentOS 5.3 (64bit) on the other. My system came with 2Gb (2 x 1Gb) of RAM and I recently wanted to upgrade. I bought 2 x 2Gb ELIXER DDR2 667Mhz RAM. I carefully added the new sticks to my motherboard, booted up windows via bios which noticed the new RAM was present. All seemed well.
However, on rebooting the system and entering the CentOS boot phase, after the boot phase (eg starting program... [ok] etc) but before the login screen my screen goes black / blank. My system has an ATI FireGL v3100 graphics card, I checked out the technical info on this and it should be ok on 64 bit linux. (See: [URL])

I plan on installing Ubuntu 10.04 and it will be my first Ubuntu install. I plan on dual booting with windows 7 and I would like advice on partition sizes. I have a 250 GiB drive and my planned partitions are as follows.
Sda1 (PQSERVICE) 12GiB This was pre-installed should I delete it
Sda 2 (System Reserved) 100MiB This was also pre-installed should I delete it
I know one of the above is the windows recovery partition but I don't know which one
Sda 3 (Gateway) 25 GiB This will contain windows will 25 GiB be enough
Extended partition
Logical 1 10 GiB / the main Ubuntu partition 10 GiB should be enough
Logical 2 1 GiB /home this will just hold settings so 1 GiB will be enough right?
Both above partitions are ext3
Logical 3 3 GiB swap partition I have 1 gig ram upgradeable to two
Logical 4 180 Gib shared NTFS partition
I am new to Ubuntu and would like to know if you think this is proper. I have already defragmented the hard drive and will make the partitions in Gparted on Ubuntu live test from usb drive.

I'm running the installer, and "Guided Partitioning" selected partition sizes I'm not completely happy with. I selected separate partitions for /home, /var, /usr, /tmp etc, and by default it gave me only 5GB for the /usr partition. I'd like to take some space away from /home and give it to the /usr partition, but I can't figure out how to do that using the menu options available.

As I mentioned before, I has having freezes while installing F12 (x86_64) with a GeForce 8600 GT. I was able to complete the installation by doing it with the "basic" video driver. However, I was still getting frequent freezes. I installed the testing Nvidia drivers, and the freezes went away. When it froze, it was a hard freeze -- it wouldn't respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL or SysRq (I did enable SysRq first). I had to do a hard reset.

On friday I tried upgrading my kubuntu karmic to lucid. The upgrade failed for reasons I've forgotten... the upgrader said it had run 'dpkg --configure -a' or something, which I assumed meant that it was restoring the OS to a usable state... which it did not and now I have a broken distro.TO THE POINT. I backed up my files and decided to do a CLEAN INSTALL of Lucid.

The problem with X not starting up started after I upgraded kernel from 2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.i686 which is what the FC15 came with. Before that I had X, without installing the nvidia.com driver (whatever came with the stock FC15-XFCE spin).I tried booting the old kernel and at first it worked but X again would not run. Now, after, above operations (reinstall of kernel-devel + kernel headers and all dependencies like glibc-common, glibcs-headers, dkms, gcc..) booting the old kernel does not work anymore: the framebuffer animation of the Fedora logo fillingup freezes at some point almost at the end; HD LED blinking hard. Maybe this means fsck is running and I need to give it more time..? I'll leave it booting when I go for lunch and see how it goes...

While it does mention nouveau, and I do use Nvidia graphics (PCIe GT 240) I believe the cause may be something else. Googling around leads me to a couple of forum threads that seem to relate to the core series of Intel processors, but I'm at a loss. I've also searched this forum however the search seems to either bring up every result under the sun and non seem to apply or no results at all. I know the card's supported as Ubuntu works flawlessly. I also tried booting in safe graphics mode, however the exact same thing happens.
I doubt using a USB stick in this manor would cause this problem, but if you suggest it i'll install from physical media.
I would post logs, however the shell it drops to seems to be severly limited (lacking reboot, even).

I have been using Ubuntu since 8.04. I am about to receive a new PC made with the new Intel i7-2600 processor. I want to use it for video editing in Ubuntu but would like to keep the Win install also. The PC has a 1TB drive with Win7 installed. I want to add an 32GB SDD drive as my boot drive with Ubuntu 10.10-64. I want to add a 3rd drive - 1 TB for data store of large video files.
Questions:
1. do U64 and W64 play well together?
2. Can U64 boot from the SSD drive?
3. Should I install Grub on the ssd?

I installed the nvidia driver from the vendors homepage. But since it does not support regulation of brightness (and the display is that bright that I want to downlevel it), I wanted to go back to the default display driver which is the nouveau driver. So I uninstalled the nvidia driver and then I realized that I didn't make any backup of the xorg.conf file prior installing the nvidia driver. Shame on me, yeah. Now when the x-server started, it couldn't find the nvidia driver. Okay, fair as it was removed. Next to that my keyboard becomes unresponsive. That's really aching as I can not switch to a text-based console any longer.I'm able to boot into initmode 3 by editing the kernel parameters in the boatloader. I'm also able to edit the xorg.conf with vi in the shell then and start the xserver to test things by calling xinit.
I already tried to recover a bit from this situation by removing the references to the nvidia driver and replaced it with some information I could find on the nouveau homepage - but no luck so far, keyboard still freezes and login window does not appear. I could take a look into the xorg.0.log which warns me about the keyboard getting disabled but I do not really understand why. Next to that I find some other additional information. My computer experience is quite okay, but I'm somehow new to Fedora, I started half a year ago with Fedora 13 on my other laptop which worked like a breeze.
I wondered where I can find information about how to configure the xserver in the default configuration, if there is some reset functionality or so, that brings me back to installation defaults. Those worked ok for the nouveau driver. Unfourtionatly I was not able to gather the correct package name that would probably had helpded me by removing and installing it again.Next to fixing my setup, I had another idea as this is a quite new install to just re-run the install again on to that machine. Is this possible with keeping the files in my homedir?

Other o/s because I plan to turn that machine into a Xen server.
Unfortunately I don't have much exper building computers/ hardware. What I'm wondering is whether the number of devices (like hard drives and optical drives, etc) is a function of what the mobo can support; or, if the bays are there and the cable has enough plugs I can just go for it.Specifically I'm trying to have 3 disks and one optical drive. The machine happens to have been a media center version desktop so it has this like 9 in 1 card reader thing in it but I don't think it uses that flat cable for data transfer anyhow. It looks to be connected differently.

My system with kernel-2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64, NVIDIA 3800 + Samsung 2233 and 3Dvision kit works fine, but upon upgrading to kernel-2.6.35.13-92.fc14.x86_64 the system won't go past the blue->white bar along the screen. The modprobe.d directory has the file blacklisting nouveau and there is the grub entry rdblacklist=nouveau, but do I need to re-run the nvidia installer. If so I think I need to reset the init level to stop X11 trying to load. and will I need to keep doing this everytime I upgrade the kernel if I have nvidia drivers installed?

After installation, I had no problems using wireless. Next, I added a new user (with administrative access). Now, when I log in as the new user, nm-applet doesn't appear in the panel and there is no wireless access. I've tried adding the Notification Area (nothing appears), making sure that the new user can connect to networks, etc with no success. System Monitor shows that nm-applet is sleeping. When I restart and login as myself, everything is still working fine. Computer: Computer: Dell Latitude D600
- Ram: 1 GB
- HD: Hitachi ATA HTS541680J9AT00
- OS: Win XP Pro & Ubuntu 10.04
- OS: win XP pro 32 & Ubuntu 10.04
- Network Controller: Broadcom BCM 4306
What additional info should I provide to assist diagnosis?

I pulled a stupid when trying to install VLC through the terminal and added the ppa source for a different version of ubuntu. Now when I do a sudo apt-get update I come up with the error:
W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/lucid-bleed...source/Sources 404 Not Found
W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/lucid-bleed...amd64/Packages 404 Not Found
E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
Also in the midst of the long list i found:
Err http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main Sources

Err http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main amd64 Packages

I tried to look in /etc/apt/sources.list for the source to remove it but I couldn't find it. Where is it located and how can I undo what I did?

I would like to upgrade from Win8.1 to Debian 8. This post might require some Wind expertise as well. I have to deal with the dreaded UEFI interface.
I got the iso with the added firmware from here: [URL] ....
The i386 download and it appears to be 334 MB. I pretty got it because I don't want to mess with the wireless controller (been there done that.)
As far as the Wind side goes I disabled secure boot. Just whenever I get to the fancy blue screen, I select boot from EFI DVD. Then it just says it can't load it and asks if I want to continue loading the OS. This might be useful I used the default Desktop Burning Gadget to burn the disk image.
