View 1 RepliesSo I just recently installed fresh 13.37 over my 13.1 install. Went multilib, and added myself to the usergroups I thought I might need. But truth is, I don't know what half of these are and I just picked the ones that sounded right. I'm the only user on this computer, although I might possibly maybe add another someone if I have to for some reason.
For my user account, I added myself to:
Code:
bin
disk
mem
kmem
wheel
floppy
mail
news
uucp
man
dialout
audio
video
cdrom
games
mysql
sshd
gdm
shadow
ftp
messagebus
haldaemon
plugdev
power
netdev
scanner
users
console
kismet
vboxusers
Basically, I want my own account to be able to do everything I normally do without too much restriction (use the disc drive, mount hard drives, browse the web, read/send email via Thunderbird, download stuff, etc), but leaving the important stuff to root so that if someone else happens to use the computer under my account, they can't do any damage. Did I select the right groups for this? Should I add or remove any? And what groups should a user have if I just want them able to browse the web, download files, use their /home, run non-root apps, and nothing else?
I'm curious as to why Xfce 4.6.2, has yet to be added to 'current'?

I just happen to have a glitch with my newly rebuild slackware server. This morning everything was working fine. Then having recently setup raid arrays, I decided to try MrGoblin's rc.mdadm script to monitor the raid arrays.
I copied the rc script to rc.d & added lines in rc.local to start the script, and a line in rc.6 to stop the script when shutdown or reboot.
Now, I cant reboot neither I can shutdown...
If I issue the command "shutdown -r now", Slack execute the normal shutdown or reboot steps, unmount the local FS, turn off swap, remount the rootdev as readonly, and then I see:
Code:
Mdadm monitor not running:INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel & it stalls at this point forever...
Before the machine would have rebooted after this line. What could explain this? Now I have to hard power down or reset the machine, and of course, upon rebooting I get a REISERFS warning of unclean shutdown...
Content of the rc.local:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
#
# /etc/rc.d/rc.local: Local system initialization script.
#
# Put any local startup commands in here. Also, if you have
code....
I did a search on this error and everyone says to add your user to netdev group, I did that but wicd still complains that I'm not in netdev. I'm trying to use wicd now so I can switch between work and home easier. Is there a log file for the kde dbus so I can see if its failing on somehting else?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently added myself a harddisk with one big ext4 partition on it. I tried to add it to my fstab file like so:
Code:
UUID=c41b529d-77ee-427c-82b3-dff16f2123a2 /media ext4 rw,user,noexec 0 2
But it is not doing what I intended, which was the partition showing up in my Places menu. It also doesn't appear in my /media folder. How to alter the command above so I could have the harddisk open and writable in my Places folder just like my system harddisk?
This probably something simple but it's got me foxed. I have a desktop and a laptop both running 10.04 great no issues, I have my music and movies on the desktop and stream wirelessly to my laptop. All worked great until I started to run out of space on the base units hard drive, no problem I added a second 500gig sata drive internally and moved the music and movie folders across. Now although I have marked them as shares I access them remotely, the second drive has to be mounted and appears almost like a external drive.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an hp z420 workstation. I bought 8x4Gb of 1600MhZ, ECC unbuffered memory.
Something weird happens now: I tested each individual RAM module by booting my machine with only that module inserted. They are all fine.
However, when I insert all of them, my machine does not boot (and the fan goes crazy).. In particular, the problem happens when I insert any RAM module into a specific slot.
Right now I am using my machine with 7x4Gb of ram, and it is fine. Does it mean I have a hardware problem with one of the sockets?
Will this come with updates or or do we need to move to F13 for 3D capabilities?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just added a second disk to one of my computers. It is a 500GB SATA. It is the second drive according to the BIOS. Fedora calls it /dev/sdb. So far so good. This box is running Fedora 13 final. Never any problems until the addition of the new disk. Palimpsest says that this disk has a LOT of bad sectors. This disk is a storage drive. I want to address the problem but don't know what to do first. My thought is to rsync all the data to my external 250GB disk bedore I do anything else but I'm mot sure if I should just yet. Maybe I should run some diagnostics on the drive? If so, what? How about the tools Disk Utility offers? Should I use the Smart Utilities? What other Linux tools are available and are they reliable? Maybe I should install XP on the main disk and use Windows' disk tools? If I should lose all data it wouldn't be the end of the world but I'm not sure how "in sync" the 2 storage drives actually are.

This has been bugging me since I upgraded to 11.4. First I noticed that most of the time when a file is copied from an application (say, downloaded from Firefox) in to a directory that Konqueror does not show the new file until I hit "Reload".OK, I could live with that, annoying as it is. Why it can't recognize that a new file has been added to the directory since the last display refresh when I switch to that window I don't know, but fine, whatever.
Then I installed Firefox 4.0 - and now frequently when I open the "Save As" file browse dialog, it doesn't see any of the files recently added either. I put in a complaint to Mozilla, but apparently only ONE other person on the planet has ever seen this happen. But it was never the case before, either in earlier Firefox or earlier openSUSE releases. I was always able to see the files I previously saved to that folder when saving a new one.
And today it happened in Kaffeine which I don't remember ever seeing before. I opened the "Open File" dialog and it couldn't see a video file I had just downloaded. When I closed Kaffeine and then restarted it, it could see it.Is this something that has been ongoing or is it new? I can't find anything via Google Search to explain it. Is there some setting somewhere that needs to be tweaked? Is it a file system problem?
I just recently downloaded a font of .ttf format (truetype I believe). I tried adding the font to a couple of places but still can't find it in any applications. My goal is to use the font in GIMP. Even tried using it in Libre Writer, but still no luck.If I simply double click the ".ttf" file, it opens a window that shows all the letters in the font and the "Quick brown fox jumps." sentence. It also shows data about it like Name, Style, Type, Size, Version, etc... And there is a button on the bottom-right of the window that says "Install Font", and when I click it, it doesn't seem like anything happens except the button becomes greyed out and says,"Install Failed" (can barely read the greyed out text though).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have learned a little about LVM through tinkering but on my new setup I am having trouble. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 Server with Gnome desktop 64 bit. I started with a 2TB HD and setup LVM with a LV for my data ("Storage) that mounts at /storage. That is full so I then added a second drive 500GB, formatted, added to VG and then extended the LV "Storage" with the 500GB partition. Now the LV reads as ~2.2TB which is right. Everything is successful up to this point. Except now when I go to the mounted LV at /storage Ubuntu shows it as full and only as ~1.7TB. The 500GB were never added!

useradd -gdevelopers -d/home/peter -m peter

ALSO, he can't user the TAB to move inside a folder (when you type cs /home/p and use tab to get /home/peter)
The newest kernel in the repositories is currently 2.6.32-24, while on [URL]... you can already download a .deb of the 2.6.35 kernel. Why does it take so long for new kernels to be added to the repositories?

1. do U64 and W64 play well together?
2. Can U64 boot from the SSD drive?
3. Should I install Grub on the ssd?
After installing Kubuntu 11.04, the system tray has gone wild. It contains network manager, volume etc. icons, but applications cannot add theirs. For example Skype status icon positions itself in the top left screen corner; Pidgin icon floats in a small window on the desktop. What could be wrong?
View 5 Replies View RelatedToday I tried adding several pieces of software using PPAs. I was able to add the PPA through "Software Sources" in the Software Center Edit menu. One I added a PPA, it wold show a running task for the update, but when I search for the software I want to get from the PPA in software center, it does not show up in the search results. However, I CAN add the software through the command line using apt-get.
For example, to add the QtQr application, I added ppa:qr-tools-developers/qr-tools-stable to Software Sources, and searched for 'qtqr.' There were no results. But I was able to 'sudo apt-get install qtqr' and it installed fine.Am I missing a step if I want to install stuff from new PPAs in Software Center?
