Ubuntu Networking :: Added Memory Lost Internet
Apr 16, 2010
I added RAM to my Acer (dual boot Windows XP / Ubuntu 9.1). Windows continues to work. Ubunty will no longer recognize the internet connection. I don't know if adding the memory is what did it, but I am puzzled why I can use the ethernet card from Windows but no longer from Ubuntu.

I am running ubuntu 9.1 on a Dell Dimension 2400. After installing ubuntu on the pc, it was automatically recognizing my router and connecting to the internet fine via ethernet. Then, my roommate unplugged the router and it won't recognize it. I can't access my router settings, and ubuntu is recognizing it as "inactive" but every other computer in the apartment runs fine. My PC uses a broadcom ethernet controller, and my router is a Linksys wireless N.

I was running 8.04 and my internet (Comcast) comes via a Motorola SB5100 cable modem then into a Netgear router then into my Dell. When I upgraded to 10.04 yesterday, I lost the wired connection. The wireless connection still works fine, but I have not been able to get a wired connection. Also, most online solutions reference the Network Manager, which is nowhere to be found.
Anyone have any solutions? I would be willing to revert to 8.04 if needed, as that worked fine, and obviously I quite regret the upgrade!

As I view it, Ubuntu has a great security risk in that it still allows internet access when the VPN connection has been lost, for whatever reason. As it is now, when the VPN connection fails you get bumped back to using your regular IP, and whatever you are doing becomes transparent to anyone watching. This is simply unacceptable for an allegedly secure platform. Does anyone know of a way to fix this with a script/program, or is there a distribution/OS that allows this? Windows re-dials the vpn automatically, but still allows internet access in the mean time.

I am a non-techie, have been gratefully using Ubuntu 8.10 for a few years for the basics: email, web, documents, photos. I have somehow lost my internet connection, but strangely my email still works...!?!? My router is showing all the correct green lights, but I cannot get to any url. I am posting this thread via work (windows) pc. I have searched on this forum and in anticipation have done as much homework as possible, see below.I have a Netgear wired router. I cannot find Network manager on the menus and tried this from the terminal:
Code:
network-manager
bash: network-manager: command not found
networkmanager

I do have a problem with my internet connection at home, I've a Huawei router and ubuntu 10. When I connect to the internet whether wireless or wired I become able to surf the internet for less than 10 min then it cuts off! and to be able to surf it again I need to restart the whole system!
I used this command to restart the networking but in vain
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
On windows I do not face this problem with the same internet connection. I do not face it either when I'm using my campus wireless connections using ubuntu/windows!, so the problem is related to my home connection+ my OS.

We have an Asterisk machine that we suspect periodically loses internet connectivity, causing all calls to drop. First, would this sort of thing be logged anywhere out of the box? I haven't noticed anything in /var/log, but that doesn't mean it's not there. If this is not typically logged, how I might go about logging it? I'm currently running a bash script from cron every 5 or 10 minutes which pings Google and writes success or failure messages to a log file. This works fine for extended outages, but if the internet connection drops and comes back between cron runs, it won't be caught.

After running a large update and rebooting a few weeks ago, I found that my internet connection had stopped working. My internal network still worked fine though, so it I know it's not the card itself or its configuration. After a bit of trial and error I discovered that simply running dhclient brings the connection up again, so it appears that something is interfering with the initial dhcp update to my ISP (or something like that; I'm no expert in this area. ) My usual policy in cases like this is to wait through two or three updates in the hopes that it's just a temporary problem, but it's been a while now and subsequent updates haven't fixed it.
I've tried looking around, but I can't come up with search criteria specific enough to narrow it down to my specific situation. I'm not even sure where to begin looking to diagnose the problem, nor do I know which package update(s) could've affected it. I'm not sure what might be useful, but here's the relevant entry in /etc/network/interfaces. I have it configured with a static internal address, with my router as the gateway.
Code:
# The primary network interface
mapping eth0
script grep
map eth0
[code].....

I installed Fedora today, and I automatically had internet connection, I never had do configure anything myself. Then, I was playing around with VPN for a good while (trying to set up the VPN connection to my University), and now, I suddenly lost my connection to the internet!
But only Fedora can't connect anymore, the Windows PC has connection as well as my Mac OS X (I dualboot Linux on my MacBook). The Ethernet connection works as well, when I unplug the cable, Fedora gives me a message, but I just don't get into the internet!
Does anyone have an ides what I have to do? I don't know anything about network connections and I'm new to Linux...
I already restarted the Computer, but that didn't work, and Google didn't really held either.

I have been using ubuntu netbook 10.10 on my Dell Mini 9 for the past few month without any problem; it connects wirelessly to the internet via a wireless router. Yesterday in the middle of web surfing, suddently firefox cannot see any website outside of my home network (Firefox displays Server not found page). No help when I rebooted a few times and connect to my home network via wireless or even wire cable; it can access files in my network file server (DNS-321) but not the internet. My desktop computer running Windows Vista and ASUS media player has no problem accessing the internet.

Here is a test code for memory alloc and free. It is to detect whether the allocs and frees match. From the result, after backtrace call, there is some memory alloc, but it does not free these memories after calling or the process exit. Why? Nomorlly, the memory alloced need to be freed after use, or the memory will leak. But I run this program for about some times, and find that though the system memory does not real leak, the free memory decreases, and the cache increases(Use free command).

Updated to the latest version several weeks back. Everything loaded fine and system works fine.....except for the internet (wireless AND wired).
I'm still real new at Linux so I just stopped and switched back over to Windows (dual-boot) out of frustration. Figured I'd finally tackle my problem today. Internet and everything worked perfectly before upgrade and now......NOTHING. I hooked laptop (computer running Linux) up to hard line on main computer.....still no internet.

No-IP does not redirect to my IP after I added host in EHCP. EHCP is set to have the original IP of my pppoe and I tried with the 127.0.0.1 IP and the problem is still there.

Now I cant connect to internet by my router either wireless or wired. My wlan drivers are ok too. There seem to be no network whatsoever.

The internet has been working happily on my Mythbuntu machine for many months but stopped working overnight. If I try to do "sudo start networking" I get a "Job failed to start" message. There's also a solid orange light on the ethernet socket. As it's been working for months, I don't think my interfaces config needs updating.Looking at what's been updated recently on the system:
1) I've configured the machine to wake from USB. It was working for a couple of days so I don't believe this is the issue.
2) I set up wake-on-lan with ethtool. Again, this was working (although it did seem to disable wake-on-usb and required a reboot to fix)
3) Update to 11.04 - I said no to this, as 10.10 was working very nicely indeed.
I've disabled wake on lan and rebooted. No joy.
ethtool detects the ethernet controller ok and it's listed in lshw.

Three months ago my daughter went off to college with a new computer. I zapped her old system and successfully installed Ubuntu 9.04 from a CD. Everything worked fine including all the peripherals and the wireless internet connection. I was able to download and update applications without a hitch. Great system and so much cleaner and quicker than Win XP on the old machine. Then the system was shut down and lay idle for three months. When I fired it up a couple of days ago, all seemed normal except I could no longer access the internet even though the wireless network icon showed four or five bars. I first discovered the problem when I tried to update though Update Manager and noticed that 22 identified files could not be fetched. Neither Firefox, Skype nor Goodgle Earth can connect.
The router is a Linksys WRT54G router that connects to the computer through a Linksys WUSB54G USB network adapter. The router serves three other non-Linux computers without a problem, including one using the same model network adapter.I don't have much experience with Ubuntu, but this is some of the information I have been able to generate.
I tried a few of the recommendations found in other sites, but nothing seems to do the job. I am perplexed because everything was great until I shut down the system for three months and then started it up again. I appreciate any assistance and would be happy to provide additional information as requested.

Whenever I add a rule to iptables, all of the policy counters reset. The counters for each individual rule remain intact, however, the main counter resets. Here's what I mean:
Code:

Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT 65M packets, 83G bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT 0 packets, 0 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT 50M packets, 30G bytes)

I have configured a VPN connection to a remote router which connects ok. I can ping the remote router IP, but cannot ping any other IP on their network.I have put this down to needing a route added. I can manually type # route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255. 255.0 dev ppp0 and all works like I want it to, but I really need this to be automatic everytime the connection starts.I have tried following URL... but cant get it to work. The file is called /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/routing and has execution priviledges (755) so ive hit a dead end.
