I have created a custom linux distro originating from the ubuntu server edition and have slim as the login manager, and openbox as the window manager. When it goes into power save mode and turns off the monitor and I move the mouse to wake it up it just goes to the shell with a mouse cursor on it. How can I get it to go right back to the openbox window manager?
View 1 Repliesyesterday i installed slim login manager on my computer (eee pc 1018p, ubuntu 11.04), and now it cannot get passed the ubuntu loading screen (with orange dots underneath) when booting. i tried booting into recovery mode and that didn't work either. i also left the computer trying to boot overnight and that didn't work.
basically, during this loading screen that should eventually bring you to the login screen, i can alt+tab to see the progress of the load. the progress is stuck on
Is there anything I can do from grub to remove slim?or, is there any way I can access my ubuntu partition and save all my files?
I was trying to set up my Xfce desktop on a fresh install.
I personally dislike Xdm, which is given as the default login manager, and would prefer to use Slim instead.
It is possible to install it using the Package Search feature (it's listed under the Contrib repository), but I haven't been able to set it as the default login manager (I wasn't able to find such a setting in /etc/sysconfig).
I had Slim working with the latest -Current updates, but that was with a package I built before updating.
I borked my system yesterday and had to do a fresh install. Now I can't get Slim working.
I tried running the Slim SlackBuild from Slackbuilds.org, and it failed without giving any errors. I figured out that the problem was with this section:

The strip commands were failing and caused the SlackBuild to exit, so I added '|| true' to them.

Not sure why this is needed in -Current and not 13, maybe because of Bash 4.1?
Anyway, now the package builds successfully, but Slim won't start. My system just hangs at a black screen after 'Starting up X11 session manager'...Has anybody been able to get Slim working in -Current?
I'm not sure this belongs in this forum as opposed to the hardware forum, but I do not beleive this is a hardware issue.I want to stop the scrren from blanking and going to power save. I'm running 5.3_x86-64 and I'm using the nVidia drivers direct from nVidia called NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-96.43.13-pkg2.run.
So far, I'm added DPMS off in /etc/xorg.conf, removed all the screensaver packages and all the power management packagesbut the screen is still going blank after a time of inactivity.What else do I need to do? I can not allow the screen to go blank, there should be no screensaver or power management and the machine should stay in a completely awake and ready-to-use state at all times.
Since upgrading to 10.04 (from 9.10) 2 days ago, I have been getting an error message whenever I log in. It tells me that 'Power manager is still running' and gives me options of 'logout anyway' or 'cancel' (I'm writing this from memory, so may have got the wording slightly wrong). Clicking 'logout anyway', then continues with the login process, with no further problems (as an aside, I am running a desktop, so I'm not sure that Power Manager has much to do anyway.

Occurance of the problem: After using GParted to move unallocated space to a ntfs-filesystem. Yep. I did it again. No oops this time, for I have no clue why this error appeared and why I cant get to my desktop. No recent updates that couldve borked the system.Lately I have had to work quite a bit with some Windows-only programs, and I found myself out of harddisk space pretty soon, as for the last year or two, I worked almost exclusively with Ubuntu and only had a minimally sized partition set up for Windows. I needed room. No problem, I thought, I will start up GParted, move some of the unallocated space to the NTFS partition and be done with it. I have performed tasks like that before, so no problem should occur.
After rebooting I got to the grub menu. All options were there. Looks nice. Except for the fact that Windows did not want to start, some MSDK (sorry, did not write down the name) file or whatever was missing. (I heard this is a Vista problem and the file connected to the error does not even exist on any XP system). Worse than XP not starting was the error message I got from my login screen.
"The configuration defaults for gnome-power-manager have not been loaded. Please contact your administrator."
So I did. I talked to myself and had to admit to the user that I did not have a solution at hand. User upset, administrator too. (They are no longer talking to each other.) Login is accepted, but after that nothing. Just a black screen with a mouse-pointer that can be moved around. Nada mas. Before getting to the login screen, there was something else that drew my attention, but again, I did not know what it meant. The error-message:

SuperGrub. It allowed me to boot, but thats it. No further steps taken, if only because SuperGrub does not support the EXT4 filesystem (yet?).I have heard people were able to get to their desktop after receiving this error by using a root account they had previously created. I dont have one, so that would not work.So, I did the three finger salute, stopped the gdm from the terminal, moved gconfd to somewhere else, hoping a new file would be created and the problem would be solved with that, but no. Restarted gdm, it worked but the problem remained.
Ok. Perhaps a reinstall of the GDM might work, I thought. Well, it might, but the problem is I have no internet connection and the usual way I connect my laptop is through phone-tethering. Not having a desktop will not allow me to make a connection.So, sudo apt-get --reinstall install gnome-power-manager did not work as an active connection is required. Also I dont know if that is going to solve the problem.So now I am in the dark. I have booted up a live CD, mounted my HD partition in order to check my /root/.Xauthority, but I could not even find the file.
I refuse to believe there is a serious problem with my Ubuntu install. As far as I can see, there is a problem with some config-files but the system itself looks OK. Reinstalling is preferably not an option, as I love my install and have been working with it for a long time now, with lots of user data on it as well. Also, I have not seperated /HOME, which makes a reinstall a bit of a drag. I am certain there is an easy fix somewhere, someway, but I would need some advice from someone more knowledgable than I am. The only thing I could think of is to find a way to reinstall gnome-power-manager without an active connection. I can download the .deb file with some other device than my laptop but I would not know how to add that to /etc/apt/sources.list. Also, I kind of doubt that the problem lies within a faulty power-manager.
After running a backup script, but previously deleting old downloads and files from the rubbish bin, I then logged out. When logging back in later I got the Ubuntu loading screen as normal, but then instead of the Ubuntu login I got another login screen that I have not seen before; black background with the login screen in the middle.

Ok so I am a total newbie at Ubuntu Linux and I'm having problems I don't know how to solve.
1.) Up until yesterday this wasn't a problem, but after a power outage while I was connected I am now unable to connect to the internet anymore as it says "Networking is disabled", how do i enable the "networking"?
2.) Another problem I am having is that I am not able to dim the screen in order to save power among other uses, I've looked around but haven't been able to find a solution, I am running ubuntu on a Gateway M-Series Laptop.
3.) Finally, since installing linux I have been unable to listen to music or any other sounds through headphones or speakers, when i connect something into the audio output, the outer speakers do shut off but no sound is emitted through the speakers/headphones, and yes i have tried multiple ones to make sure it wasn't the headphones or speakers.
I have a few machines set up and running Red Hat 4.1.2-42 in a computer lab. I also have a single test machine running the same version. The machines in the lab work flawlessly.However, when machines are on the login screen, they don't go into power saving mode. That is, after a certain amount of inactivity, the idle login screen should be replaced by a black power saving screen. But this does not happen. The monitor should go into standby (the little green light becomes orange, and the whole screen shuts down until you move your mouse again...you know the drill).I know this is supposed to be the case because this works on the test machine. It just doesn't work in the lab. I think it has something to do with gdm, but I can't for the life of me figure it out.

View 1 Replies View RelatedLast week I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04 to a 8.10. While my ever so loyal machine was performing this business, I started my diner, once in a while having a quick look at how things were going. And they were going fine. The last thing I noticed on the screen was that upgrading was at about 3 minutes from finishing, and when I got back to my PC I was confronted with a black screen. Later on I found out that the reason for the crash was a malfunctioning USB-hub in which my mouse was located.
Anyway, I couldn't get my Ubuntu running, the only thing I got to do was reach the log-in screen, enter my username and password, after which the screen froze. Typing CTRL+ALT+F1 gave me a terminal window, but I had no clue what to go looking for or where/how I could find it.
In the mean time I re-partitioned the HD (75GB), placed the old Ubuntu on a 30GB partition and gave the other 45GB to a new partition on which I re-installed my Ubuntu 8.04. Working from that partition I was able to find out that the old version had indeed upgraded to 8.10 but was missing the <gnome-power-manager> file.
My question now: If I can in any way restore that missing file or point me out some kind of tutorial where I can learn how to do it?
Untill now I have been looking through about a few hundred tutorials, but most of them are written by people who know the terminal inside-out, and frankly are not really easily understandable for newbies.
The fact is: in that old version I have many maps and files which I would like to save (yes, you are completely right: I should have saved them in the first place!) but some of them are for some reason write-protected and I do not know how to get root-priviliges to un-lock them.
My power settings is set to put the laptop screen to sleep after some minutes of inactivity. This works fine, however it doesn't want to come back to life if I move the mouse, type etc...

I'm running Squeeze with Gnome & GDM3. After 1 h my laptop automatically suspends while in the login screen (GDM3; so no user login). I want to prevent that, since this machine also has a server role. how this can be prevented?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI use Squeeze with Xfce. My problem is that recently (after the xfce updates) the xfce power manager doesnt react to the power button - it is set to suspend. I dont have gnome-power manager or anything like it running.
If i reboot the computer, the power button will work but if i suspend and resume, it doesnt work again.
The computer is built on an Asus M3N78-VM mobo (2GB RAM/Athlon3200+ single core).
acpi_listen detects the button press.
Any thoughts?
I'm having a rather peculiar problem booting into openSUSE 11.2. After the installation (which goes fine), i get a black screen and my system freezes.
In detail, I can see the splash screen and booting details, but at the moment I am supposed to see a login manager, i just get a black screen. Sometimes it has a cursor indicator in the top left, sometimes it doesn't. Same thing happens in failsafe mode too.
This happens over and over, no matter which installation type I choose, 32bit or 64bit, KDE/Gnome/XFCE.
My problematic box is:
AMD Athlon 3200+ 64bit
2GB DDR
ATI Radeon x1950pro <-- which I believe might be causing all these issues.
I was running the Update Manager when my system froze due to the failure of Karmic to support motherboards using the Intel 845 chipset.
Although the update did not complete when I rebooted and invoked Update Manager it reported that the system was up to date. How do I reset the system so that I can install the updates?

I read something about it being the video card, so I took my old one out which it being an ati, an replaced it with an nvidia.
I installed windows 7 and recover grub from the karmic livecd successfully. Now I can access all the OS in my machine. The only weird issue that I have is that there's no login promote in tty1-6 any more. When I switch to tty1-6, I can only see a flashing underline promote. But I can input anything in tty1-6. How to get tty1-6 back?

I know there are ways to prevent bandwidth hogging, but I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone. My other goal is also to reduce power and cooling costs. My two computers between them make a very nice space heater in the winter, in summer they make it sweltering in my room.I'm sure it would be trivial to get the sever to power itself off every morning, but is it possible to get it to power itself on at bedtime? If not, I do have Wake on Lan working, is there a windows program that would allow me to send a wake on lan signal every day and then shutdown windows
View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to switch off 3d i.e. dri on my laptop to save power. There is a bug in the intel video driver that makes it generate excess wakeups and thus increase power consumption. I don't use 3d so this is very annoying.
I have tried modifying /etc/X11/xorg.conf to insert an "NODRI" option in the "Device" section and have commented out both of the "load dri" commands in the "Modules" section. No go. When I look in the xorg log, these changes are seen but not acted on. The system appears to have hardwired defaults set somewhere which are difficult to override. It appears to be a new issue because with Karmic one still had control with xorg.conf.
Just generally I don't like changes like this because it is not documented on the wiki where and how to change the defaults in Lucid. Linux was supposed to be easily configurable so IMHO this is a step backwards.
I have a Dell Precision T3400 workstation (Nvidia Quadro NVS 290) with the kmod Nvidia driver installed. Everything works fantastic for power saving, the screen saver comes on , then the monitor blanks after a while. The only problem is that the monitor itself (Dell E228WFP) never goes into standby. The power LED stays green instead of orange. Worked fine under FC8, only noticed it recently under FC10.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi am trying to install rhel 6 (86*64) on my windows 7 (AMD Sempron 145 processor) using DVD iso image. after selecting keyboard language and it goes to ther rest of the process for 20 seconds and then the monitor goes to power save mode. trying to input with keyboard or mouse does not seems to be helping. i have changed my windows 7 powersave options to "never".
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.

I come back and use the mouse/touchpad to get to the login screen, it does not respond. That is,the computer responds but not the screen--I can see the login screen very, very dimly.ut it won't brighten to a usable level. Most recently, it darkened as I was starting to type in my login password.If I power down the machine and reboot, the screen comes up fine, so I think it's a software rather than hardware problem.
