OpenSUSE :: Screen Not Recovering?

Nov 29, 2010

Lately my screen has seemed to go out on me a number of times--mostly, I think, after the computer has been sitting and has locked and dimmed. I come back and use the mouse/touchpad to get to the login screen, it does not respond. That is,the computer responds but not the screen--I can see the login screen very, very dimly.ut it won't brighten to a usable level. Most recently, it darkened as I was starting to type in my login password. If I power down the machine and reboot, the screen comes up fine, so I think it's a software rather than hardware problem.

OpenSUSE :: App For Recovering Deleted Files And Partitions?

Jun 18, 2011

A friend of mine had inportant files on his windows 7 PC. the pc took a virus, he took it with some "experts" wich happily DELTED the partition and reinstalled W7, and apps, WITHOUT backing up his files.

Ibe faced similar cases before, and on windows ibe used Recuva with mixed resutls, but. Is there an application in linux i can install on my opensuse 11.4 box to do the same task? Can you guys recommend good linux software (available for suse) that will do this? I read about "TestDisk", but ibe never used it.

OpenSUSE Install :: Recovering Data From Drive ?

Jan 8, 2011

I've accidently begun installing Ubuntu Studio onto my OpenSUSE drive I stupidly forgot to to swap my hard drive cables around.

Luckily, the Ubuntu Studio install failed before I noticed the problem, but I need to access the SUSE drive to pull some date off of it. Whats the best way of doing this?

I used a program in windows XP to try and pull the data (mainly holiday snaps) off the drive, but it only works on NTFS file systems, so didn't get me what I need.

How can I access the data on the linux partitions? I'm fairly certain I was using 11.2, which after a bit of googling seems touse the EXT3 file format. Correct?

I'm in over my head here really, as you can probably tell, but what my limited knowledge leads me to believe is that the Ubuntu installer overwrote my partition table (is that right?) but left all the data there still.

Ideally I need a program very similar to the one that I used, but which works for the SUSE filesystem, and runs under XP (my only working OS at the moment)

OpenSUSE :: Adding - Mounting New Drive & Recovering Corrupt Data

Mar 4, 2010

I have a Hard Drive that has a corrupted file system and i have tried the usual MS Windows fixes, chkdsk and a number of recovery tools inc Dos recovery tools and failed.

The Drive is an MS Windows drive with an NTFS file system.

chkdsk scans and after several hours fixing numerous problems eventually gives up and fails to complete.

The directory "My Documents" contains several GB of data and displays that this is true. When trying to access the directory, access is denied because its corrupt. Using Windows and Dos recovery tools i can view the contents of the directory sometimes! but cannot copy out any of the data, the applications return messages saying no can do basically.

I would like to try to use Linux to recover the data.

Problem number one is i have never tried to add a hard drive to an existing Linux system before, how do i go about adding a new drive?

The 2nd problem is, is there a Linux application that i can use to attempt to repair and recover the corrupt data on this drive or more specifically in the "My Documents" directory.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Recovering MySQL Db From Failed RAID Array

Jun 30, 2011

I recognize that this isn't the typical question, but I have a problem with my OpenSUSE webserver, and I thought I would prevail on the community for some guidance. I have this webserver with an important MySQL db on it. The RAID array seems to have died while I was moving. (did someone drop it? dunno) Now it can't find any boot device. It has 4 old SCSI drives.

So, I know how to mount a IDE or SATA drive as a slave, in a Linux environment to read data off of it (to copy the MySQL files off of it.) But, how do I do that with a SCSI drive? Also, I have an additional (identical) server to the crippled one. What will happen if I just slide one of the scsi drives into the operating server? Is this second identical server going to help me at all? I don't even know what is on it. Can I reconfigure the RAID, so it's not using a drive, and then slide in a disk from the crippled server, and copy the data off of it?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Obnoxious Bar In Smplayer - Full Screen Isn't Full Screen And There Are Black Edges On Both Sides Of The Screen

Jan 25, 2011

This obnoxious bar has just appeared in Smplayer at the top of the screen. It stays there even when I go full screen. Now full screen isn't full screen and there are black edges on both sides of the screen. I have not be able to figure out how to hide it. I do not need or want this onscreen display. How can I configure Smplayer to make this go away? How can I get my 16:9 full screen aspect ratio back? I have done nothing to mplayer or smplayer as far as editing any or changing any configuration files. I tried several videos and it displays on all of them. It was not there last time I used Smplayer.

OpenSUSE :: Dual Monitor - Nvidia Driver With X Screen - Shows A Black Screen

Feb 5, 2011

I have openSUSE 11.3 with an nvidia card connected with two monitors. In the past I used xinerama which was ok, but now I need to have two separate desktops, one on each screen. I set the nvidia driver with x screen, and now one screen works perfect and the other only shows a black screen. When I move the mouse over the black screen, the mouse pointer turns into an X, but moves correctly, which seems to me that the problem is that I need to set the second desktop to that screen. I looked on forums on how to do so, and no luck.

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Increase Resolution Than At Least Stretch The Screen To Full Screen?

Aug 27, 2011

I recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.

From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

sudo /usr/sbin/hwinfo --framebuffer

OpenSUSE Install :: Don't See The Login Screen / Get A Screen With Squares And Rectangles

Mar 27, 2011

I installed opensuse11.4 few minutes back. The install was absolutely smooth. I have dual boot, Win Xp and 11.4 now. But for some reason I do not see the login screen but instead I see a green screen with squares and stripes. Login in the failsafe mode is successful. How do I fix it?

Also noticed the following,

1) Initially the splash screen picks up the right resolution 1024*768 and then it changes it to a higher resolution. This I think I can fix, because I had faced a similar problem with 11.3 as well.

Graphics Card: GeForce 7025/ nForce 630a.

Fedora :: Recovering An Encrypted Partition?

Apr 8, 2010

I have been using fedora 12 for last 6 months, recently I bought an external USB hard drive of 320 GB capacity. I made 2 partitions using the Disk Utility in Fedora. I encrypted the first partition as it was supposed to hold a lot of sensitive data, and yes it did have. Now I had to change my OS to AV linux for some audio-video editing work which wasnt being done properly on fedora due to some issue beyond my knowledge. now the problem is my encrypted partition is not accessible in my new installation. I see an empty space on my /dev/sda1. although no change to partition data has been done and the data on the second partition /dev/sda2 is easily accessible. when putting the drive on automount, is does not ask me for the password and neither does it show me the data. I have tried fdisk and sme other utilities but have failed to get my drive unencrypted.

Ubuntu :: Recovering Files From Formatted HDD

Jan 24, 2010

While trying to create a bootable SD to install Ubuntu on a netbook, I accidentally formatted a part of a removable HDD that was connected to my computer. If I remember correctly, the partition I formatted wasn't the main partition of the HDD. In that case, does it make sense that the whole disk was wiped out? On that HDD there's a year worth of work, I really need that back.

I was using PhotoRec with some luck: it started to recover files, but with no names, which is almost useless, considering a lot of it are recordings - useless without their names. Is there any good recovery program that will recover all my files incl. names? Is there a easier oprtion, considering that I think I didn't really format the big partition of the HDD? What may it have been, the small partition?

When I try to access the older installation (the 80 GB one), I find that all my data in my home folder is broken. Ubuntu :: Recovering Some Data From Raid 0?

Aug 11, 2010

So I've pulled two hard drives out of my busted windows xp system (dead mb) and I'm trying to get some data off of them. The drives are in raid 0, so my friend told me that I might be able to do something if I use linux. Some late night searching on the internet directed me to a few resources, one of which was this forum. I've tried 2 methods, neither of which have worked.

1. mdadm

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mdadm --detail /dev/sdb
mdadm: /dev/sdb does not appear to be an md device

2. dmraid

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo dmraid -s
/dev/sdb: "sil" and "hpt45x" formats discovered (using hpt45x)!
ERROR: sil: wrong # of devices in RAID set "sil_agafdhcebccj" [1/2] on /dev/sda
ERROR: removing inconsistent RAID set "sil_agafdhcebccj"

[code]....

I've got some files for work that I'd really like to get off there. I've played with unix a bit in college and I've ran ubuntu before, but usually using the GUI, so a lot of this stuff is over my head. But from what I gather, my system thinks that one of the drives isn't a raid drive?

Ubuntu :: Recovering Deleted 9gb 7z File

Aug 17, 2010

A friend had a 320 gig hdd he wanted me to back up. I saved all the files in a folder "Documents & Settings" and even made a 7z archive out of it. I used a 1tb mybook and copied the files to it then tried to delete it. Now i had recovered the files using ubuntu, but moved them to my windows partition. When i got on windows 7 and tried to delete the directory "documents & settings" i got an error saying some files had names that were too large or something like that. So i went on ubuntu and deleted the files from my windows partition without moving them to the ubuntu partition.

Well my 1tb drive just broke so i lost the files on there. Now im trying to back the files up using ubuntu. I am running scalpel at the moment, and it hasnt found anything at all. I really dont know if i set up the configuration file right. I just started scanning my other hdd that contains the linux boot. It has just started so i am not sure if it will find anything or not.

But incase it doesnt, how do i set up the config file to find the file? There are two things i deleted off of my windows partition. a 7z file archive which was the 9GB directory "Documents and Settings" zipped, and the actual folder Documents and Settings.

Ubuntu :: Recovering Files From External HD?

Aug 24, 2010

My powerbook died (motherboard or something...). I took out the Hard Drive to mount in an external enclosure. I tried accessing the drive in both windows and mac - no luck. So, I thought I'd try it in Ubuntu, thinking maybe it would show up - no luck. My question: is there any way to access the files from my drive using linux? Is there any way to mount it? The drive is spinning, and when I enter sudo fdisk -l ; I get this:

Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

[Code]....

This: Disk /dev/sdb: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes is the drive I want to get my files off of. So ubuntu is reading the drive in some fashion.
