Ubuntu Servers :: Wrote A Start Up Script In /etc/rcS.d/ That Runs:/etc/init.d/squid3?

Jan 19, 2010

I installed squid on my machine, and for a while it was starting up automatically when the computer would turn on, and I would only have to reconfigure on ip-up for the new dns, etc.Now for some reason, I notice that squid isn't even started. To fix this, I wrote a start up script in /etc/rcS.d/ that runs:/etc/init.d/squid3 startAnd I notice it still isn't starting. So I write "/etc/init.d/squid3 start" and put it in my ip-up.d/ script.Everything in the script is being executed, but the squid server.I've tried reinstalling squid... what am I missing? where does the computer start these services?

Ubuntu :: Mount Command No Longer Runs At Boot From /etc/init.d/rc.local

Ubuntu Servers :: Squid3 - Calamaris Will Not Work

May 28, 2010

I can't figure out how to get Calamaris to work. I'm using squid3, so I understand that there could be a problem with that, however I installed links for the logs, so that even though it uses "squid" it should work for squid3...

Code:
ls -al squid
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 2010-05-05 12:21 squid -> squid3/

I even tried going into the /etc/cron.daily/calamaris file, and changing squid to squid3... But when I run the crontask, it gives no output and there's no file in /var/www/calamaris. What's going on? I need a program to analyze computer bandwidth.

Ubuntu :: Compiz Only Runs If Start It Gradually ?

Feb 24, 2010

A botched ATI proprietary driver upgrade caused a cascade of problems. I've installed this driver many times before, but this time something just went wrong. I may have made a mistake. There don't seem to be many complaints about the ATI 10.2 driver so this seems likely. Anyway things were quite unstable for a while. I had problems with nautilus (lost the desktop) and segfaults from compiz. I had to reinstall a lot of stuff etc etc.

Anyway, this episode has left me with a strange lingering malaise. I can get the machine into a state where everything works perfectly - the cube is fine and quite snappy, the desktop is all there; it looks great; New driver seems to be working OK. But when I log out and log back in there are problems.

Step 1:If compiz is the window manager during login it dies killing the nautilus desktop and leaving me without a window manager running (no window decorations). This is a nasty state to be in because you can't easily get at a terminal (yeah ctl alt F1 - but how to fix the window manager from there). I've got a keyboard shortcut for metacity which lets me recover from this state. But afterwards I can't get the desktop back.

If metacity is the window manager during login - no problem. I've got a desktop. It starts up fine. Everything looks good. But I'm running metacity and I want to run compiz. So now we try to get compiz running.

Step 2: If I enter "compiz -- replace" in a terminal compiz segfaults and doesn't put metacity back leaving me without a window manager again. Just before it segfaults it complains about not finding some expected graphics files. This seems to have something to do with cube caps [Edit=Not - see later]- but I've restored defaults there so ... Fortunately ctrl C gets me out of that and back to metacity. Or I use my shortcut. But gee whiz no compiz.

OK - here is where it gets interesting. If I go to the compiz settings manager and disable the cube, then compiz --replace works just fine. So it looks like something specific to the cube. This lets me get compiz running but without the cube.

Now things get really interesting. Once compiz is running, if I open the compiz settings manager, then I can enable the cube and in fact ... it works!

To sum up, I now have to go through the following procedure every time I log in.

1. Login in with metacity as default window manager
2. Disable the cube in compiz settings manager
3. Start compiz with compiz --replace
4. Enable the cube in compiz settings manager.

After doing that everything works fine ... at least until I log out.

The fact that I can get everything to work indicates that I've got the driver installed OK and it is working. But why should I have to go through this bizarre procedure each time I log in?

Notes:
1. The problem afflicts all users - so it probably isn't a user config file issue.
2. I've reinstalled compiz and a whole lot of xwindows stuff. Didn't help.
3. I will try downgrading the video driver to the previous version as a last resort. But if the problem is something I broke while things were messed up, downgrading the driver may not fix it.
4. I'll post the crash message compiz generates in a followup (I'll have to log out and back in to generate the crash so I can copy the message)

Ubuntu Networking :: Privoxy Will Start Manually But Not During Init?

Feb 24, 2010

Long-time linux user, new to Ubuntu (mainly a gentoo user). I need to get tor and privoxy up and running for a less computer-capable user. I installed Tor and Privoxy, configured them (apparently correctly) and they both appear to work just fine when I start them manually from their init scripts:

sudo /etc/init.d/tor start
sudo /etc/init.d/privoxy start

However, I cannot seem to get privoxy to start up properly when the machine boots. Tor starts up and waits patiently, but privoxy is dying or getting killed for some reason I can't understand, and on Ubuntu, have no idea how to diagnose. There's no privoxy process after booting, and the init.d script reports status: not running. I have the startup scripts for both Tor and Privoxy linked to in all the relevant runlevels. I played with the order thinking it might be a dependency thing. Hell, I even put a line in rc.local to try and force it to go. But no matter what I do, I can't seem to get the privoxy service to start for me any way but by manually typing 'sudo /etc/init.d/privoxy start' in a terminal, after logging in.

1. Help me get privoxy to auto-start during init

2. OR Help me figure out how to figure out how to get privoxy to auto-start during init. On Gentoo, all of the init scripts are listed on the screen during init as they run, and you can even run through them interactively by pressing I during startup. I have no idea how to do this on Ubuntu. I modified the kernel line to remove the splash screen, but the information Ubuntu puts on the screen during init is quite haphazard. How do I figure out what's going wrong with the privoxy init script?

Debian :: Fglrx And /etc/init.d/gdm3 Start Not Working In Squeeze

Jul 31, 2010

Here is my xorg.conf when I attempt to use fglrx:

Section "Device"
Identifier      "ATI RADEON HD4850"
#   Driver "ati"
Driver  "fglrx"
EndSection

Also, doing /etc/init.d/start/ gdm3 says Starting GNOME display manager: gdm3 but it doesn't do anything. I tried pressing ctrl+f1 all the way to ctrl+f12 and nothing. What does work however is sudo gdm3 (with the "ati"/"radeon" driver --- nothing works at all with fglrx).

I am trying to get fglrx working because I want to fix this compiz issue I've been having here which could be related to the shortcomings of the "ati"/"radeon" driver: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=40991&p=312577#p312577

Ubuntu Servers :: Init Not Found After RAID Setup?

Apr 4, 2011

I have the current disk setup :

disk1 :

Code:
sda:
(primary) sda1 ntfs
(primary) sda2 ext3 (mounted as / )[code]....

Before i set up the raid, but with this exact partitioning, the system booted perfectly. When i installed mdadm and created the raid1 mirroring on sda6 and sdb1, the init got screwed up, and all i get is a shell on initramfs, from where i can inspect that sda is binded on md, and cat /proc/mdstat tells me that i have an inactive sda[4].I can't mount the root partition (sda2), because it's busy (i suspect dmraid to lock it), which is, i guess, why init cannot be found.

I wonder if my error is to setup a raid array using a logical partition contained in an extended partition (but i hardly see why it would not work - but the sda bind and the sda[4] in mdstat seems to tell me that it does not), or it's just the initrd that is improperly configured. The other things that bothers me, is that changing the partition type of the raid partitions (fd to 0 - Empty), to disable raid autodetection, resulted in the same behavior on boot. Which might lead me again to think about configuration file problem instead of improper setup. The live cd doesn't not seem to recognize raid, so i can't inspect problems any further, but i could inspect system configuration, but i don't really know where to start.
