View 3 RepliesI have an embedded device for which I've created an html configuration page. This page allows you to set static IPs, dhcp, and can scan for wireless devices.My problem is that in order to access the device it requires that it runs as a dhcp server otherwise people are not assigned an IP and so can not access the embedded devices static IP. (This config page is for the laymen and so they are not the type who are able to set up their own static IPs). One of the potential options is to have the device connect to the network on eth0 acting as a dhcp client. However this prevents me from running a dhcp server.One solution I can think of is running a dhcp server only if it doesn't detect another dhcp server running on the network.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed the latest Debian on a computer to make a backup appliance. No GUI.When the computer starts, everything is okay. The DHCP client is running, the network interface have an address, fine.If I do a /etc/init.d/network restart (or stop + start), no more DHCP client. t is stopped when the interface is down. When the interface is up, I have to start it manually.1 - is it normal ?2 - isn't ifup's job to launch the dhcp client ?3 - can /etc/network/if-up.d be the right place to resolve this ?

I'm curious if anybody can shed some light for me in this department. We're in a large environment with a Windows DHCP Server. We have been tinkering with LTSP on Edubuntu as thin and fat clients. It works great, but right now we just have 1 server handling the lab, which works fine unless we want to expand, which may be very possible.
These are the instructions I received:
Login to your windows server and load the DHCP configuration screen
Create a DHCP reservation for the MAC address you obtained
Add the configuration options below to enable the machine to boot from the LTSP server
017 Root Path: /opt/ltsp/i386
066 Boot Server Host Name: <ip address>
067 Bootfile Name: ltsp/arch/pxelinux.0 # Specify CPU architecture in place of 'arch', for instance 'i386'

I'm curious, what if I want to have multiple Ubuntu servers on the network that I want to have bootable? For example, let's say I have 3 labs, and 3 servers. Server A to Lab A, Server B to Lab B, and Server C to Lab C. I want all C's computers to boot to C, and B to B, A to A, etc.
1 - How would I add multiple entries on the Windows DHCP Server to allow all 3 (A B C) servers to boot?
2 - How would I be able to isolate the clients so ONLY Lab A clients boot to Server A, etc?
I'm trying to build a Fedora 12 cluster to run DHCP on top of two servers using pacemaker and drbd. The pacemaker runs great but i'm having the hardest time getting DRBD installed.
My kernel version is 2.6.32.11-99.fc12.i686.PAE First i tried to [root@dhcp-primary drbd]#yum install drbd this doesn't give me everything because apparently the kernel module for DRBD must be built from source. so i unpacked drbd-8.3.6.tar.gz and tried :

I'm not very experienced in compiling from source i'd love to make an rpm for this but after scouring the web and trying different install methods, I am still at a loss.
Thing is : I have an Install DVD created from current with the script from AlienBob about two months ago, I use it as my "default" Slackware64 13 install.
I had my drivers working ( KO modules loaded in kernel 2.6.29.6 ) I had to build for Broadcom Wireless and Nvidia GPU. Today I decided to make an upgrade w slackpkg, blacklisted kernel kernel headers, and everything pertaining to it. Still the damn thing installed 2.6.32.x. anyway, ran lilo to take notice of the change, and rebooted. booted allright, only when i Init 4, it failed to startx. new kernel, new mods needed to be loaded, i picked my DVD with drivers, and tried to run the Nvidia proprietary installer...
It uninstalled the previous driver and started compiling a new kernel module..I had the previous DVD installer of Slackware64 Current, as well as my private repo of packages, either built by me with src2pkg or makepkg, or from slackbuilds, I had my /home partition mounted apart, so i regenerated my system in about one hour...
I have a headless Ubuntu computer which is primarily use as a server but which has Ubuntu desktop edition installed. I use X forwarding through SSH occasionally to use GUI programs so I am not looking to remove them. However, I would like to disable any GUI elements that would be started automatically when the computer is booted. Is the graphical login screen the only thing that would be run? or is nautilus, gnome-session etc. started as well? How would I go about removing the necessary entries from the init scripts?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu 10.04 on a pc... the server edition. i went to restart samba and it is not in the init.d directory. is there a different folder for server plateforms? cause im use to my 9.10 desktop edition.
also one more question, when i "ls" the /ect/ directory of course i cant see the whole thing because my monitor only shows the bottom of the file, is there a way to list it like the "more" commands, or possibly scroll up?
recently installed phpVirtualBox and VirtualBox on my 10.04 LTS ubuntu server it's getting annoying having to type
Code:
/usr/bin/vboxwebsrv -b --logfile /dev/null >/dev/null
every time i reboot the server
tried for hours to make an init.d script that will run it but failed..basically I just want it to automatically run the above command on every boot.
I was having a job in /etc/event.d. It was working fine upto FC12. With upgrade to Fedora 13, it stopped working . Searching the internet, It looks like /etc/event.d is obsolete and I need to use /etc/init. Also the filename has to have a '.conf' extension. So I have renamed my job as /etc/init/svscan.conf.However, it fails to start automatically on reboot . It works if I manually issue the command % sudo /sbin/initctl emit qmailstartBut fails to start automatically on reboot. Is there anything wrong in my script below ? Let me know if I have missed out anything?
% cat /etc/init/svscan.conf
# svscan - runlevel compatibility

After a Kubuntu upgrade from Karmic to Lucid on a 32 bit i686 my samba script in /etc/init.d/ was gone. Is that simply a bug or something going wrong during the upgrade, in which case I restore the script from backup, or is there a new way to start/stop/restart... samba in Lucid? Samba is working just fine after the upgrade BTW, both for print and file sharing over a mixed network.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI wrote a custom init script for a java application. The script resides in /etc/init.d and follows the convention for the init.d scripts. However, the script runs the java process as root. I need these processes to run as a non-root user. Is there a way besides using sudo or su in the script (seems inelegant), to run the script as a specific non-root user? Perhaps using a .conf file in /etc/init or a daemon wrapper? What would the Ubuntu way of doing this be?

Before i set up the raid, but with this exact partitioning, the system booted perfectly. When i installed mdadm and created the raid1 mirroring on sda6 and sdb1, the init got screwed up, and all i get is a shell on initramfs, from where i can inspect that sda is binded on md, and cat /proc/mdstat tells me that i have an inactive sda[4].I can't mount the root partition (sda2), because it's busy (i suspect dmraid to lock it), which is, i guess, why init cannot be found.
I wonder if my error is to setup a raid array using a logical partition contained in an extended partition (but i hardly see why it would not work - but the sda bind and the sda[4] in mdstat seems to tell me that it does not), or it's just the initrd that is improperly configured. The other things that bothers me, is that changing the partition type of the raid partitions (fd to 0 - Empty), to disable raid autodetection, resulted in the same behavior on boot. Which might lead me again to think about configuration file problem instead of improper setup.The live cd doesn't not seem to recognize raid, so i can't inspect problems any further, but i could inspect system configuration, but i don't really know where to start.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been dual booting 10.10 with Windows7 for about a month. Today is the first time I've encountered a serious problem.
This morning, nothing functioned properly after trying to open several programs. The computer seemed to be "frozen", although the mouse was working fine.
I decided to reboot, but then encountered an even bigger problem.
It failed to boot and got this message: no init found. try passing init= bootarg
The problem now is that it requires a Live CD session and I keep getting this: GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
In case it matters, I didn't install 10.10 from an ISO, I just upgraded from 10.04.
I installed squid on my machine, and for a while it was starting up automatically when the computer would turn on, and I would only have to reconfigure on ip-up for the new dns, etc.Now for some reason, I notice that squid isn't even started.To fix this, I wrote a start up script in /etc/rcS.d/ that runs:/etc/init.d/squid3 startAnd I notice it still isn't starting.So I write "/etc/init.d/squid3 start" and put it in my ip-up.d/ script.Everything in the script is being executed, but the squid server.I've tried reinstalling squid... what am I missing? where does the computer start these services?
View 4 Replies View RelatedAt work we use autofs4, and we also take advangate of the -DOSNMAE=blah and -DOSREL=blah for our automount maps. We're moving some systems to autofs5 and I can't for the life of me figure out how to pass these options properly. There's no 'localoptions' in the init script anymore as there was for autofs4. I've tried adding the flags to the OPTIONS variable in /etc/default/autofs. That adds them to the global autofs process but then nothing in the automounter mounts.

I booted with 9.04 LiveCD discovered the drive could not be mounted-ran fsck -ln and it told me the drive has no valid partition table. I have had intermittent problems mounting flash drives before this, so I'm kind of worried it might be a hardware issue.Also have files on that drive I would rather not lose, so reinstalling is hopefully a last resort.
i was wondering if there is anybody out there who has logwatch running and configured to just grab dhcp leases only
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am setting up dhcp server for my public library and need to divide clients into a number of pools on the same network. The different ranges will be for different filtering requirements via squid/dansguard proxy. I have inhouse clients: staff, adult patron, and child patron, that have different filtering requirements and wireless guests that I want to shorter lease times to handle the rapid turnover rate. Trying to understand the terse manual, you assign pools via allow/deny members of classes, but classes are assigned by matching on mac address or vendor ids. Unfortunately as a poor rural library we have a hodge-podge of hardware with no matchable pattern. So I can solve the inhouse clients by using fixed-address, and remove them from the dynamic pool. Now the dhcp server would be serving only the short term wireless guests from the pool.
A common problem at libraries, you always get a few that are compelled to misbehave and break the libraries TOS. In the past the librarians would kick the offenders out of the library only to have them link in from the step or parking lot. Since I have their mac address in their initial lease I would like to prevent them from reestablishing a connection when they are banned.
My thinking is this; the library's computers are static and not part of the pool, the wireless clients would be unknown-clients, so set the pool to allow only unknown-clients, and for the "bad-boys" add their hosts in a group directive would make them "known" and therefore unable to get a IP from the dhcp server.
group {
host banned1 { hardware ethernet 00:00:00:00:00:01; }
host banned2 { hardware ethernet 00:00:00:95:a6:c1; }
host banned3 { hardware ethernet 0c:f1:b6:fe:00:01; }
}

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been rtying for a couple of days now to set up a local dns/dhcp server with dnsmasq on a ubunut server 10.04 I followed the basic instructions from several websites, starting with the ubuntu community one, didnt work, then tried some other, and nothing.
In the server the dns works, i test with dig example.com and i can see the time difference, so dns is working. so the problem is not making the dns work but to make the server listen for dns and dhcp resquests and respond to them.
I have desactivated the dhcp from the router so thats not the problem. making a windows box ping the server works, so the network is configured correctly.
dnsmaq is listed as "LISTEN" on netstat, i read in some blog that it should be using ports 67 and 68 but those are no listed, neither i configured them in any moments, none of the instructions i followed mentioned sth about that. i even tried configuring the window box with the ips and dns accordingly and that wouldnt work either.
so in conclusin i have dnsmasq that does have dns set up but wont answer to any requests of either DNS nor DHCP.
I'm have a number of ubuntu servers that all have dual nics.One interface is used to assign a static public ip and the other is used to assign a static internal IP that can be used on the internal network.The interfaces pull IP's from completely separate gateways on different networks.The problem I face now it that our internal network is moving everything to DHCP on the internal side.I can configure my /etc/network/interfaces so that I can get a public static Ip and a private DCHP, but the problem is that the public IP no longer functions for any services.here is an example of my interfaces
Code:
# The primary network interface

I'm trying to install Ubuntu server on an older 05-06 Desktop (IBM) and when I get to the Configuration part it stops right around 95% and the prompt reads that configuration failed do to the fact that my unit is running a non DHCP Network or my machine is two slow. Now it does only have 1 gig in it right now so I'm thinking that might be the problem also. But if it is a DHCP issue how can I install UBUNTU or is it even possible?
