Ubuntu Servers :: Use The Users Public_html Directory To Run Php Scripts?
Apr 4, 2011
I've got a strange problem and not found any solution on web.
System: ubuntu 10.10
server: apache2 v2.2.16
I want to use the users public_html directory to run php scripts, but... in browser I get only downloading window to save. The apache2 is working in default directory (/var/www/index.php appears normally), but not in public_html. Tried a lot of solution from web and from this forum also, but still doesn't work correctly.

Since yesterday I'm fighting with OpenVPN on Ubuntu 10.04TLS and I can not cope with the authorization of users from Windows 2008 AD server. It looks like this: Published 93.159.XX.XX IP address the router and all traffic directed to the internal LAN IP 10.0.1.210. Customers who will combine the different platforms are Mac OS, Linux, Windows XP, 7, Vista. The whole domain is for Windows 2008. Uploader authLDAP module, but I still can not connect, that is, not after entering the username and password from the W2K8 domain does not log

This is the scenario: Active Directory Server = 192.168.0.1 Squid/Dansguardian Proxy Server w/NTLM Auth = 192.168.0.10 The Linux box has been integrated with AD and works fine. Users can authenticate automatically when login the AD or when they access the web through Basic authentication. That part is just fine.
But, when I add a new user, or change a users' primary group, I have to change the 'filtergroups' file in Dansguardian. I tried to make auto this process using the USERMAP and USERMAP2 scripts in [URL].. at the "Extras and Add Ons" section, but both scripts doesn't run properly in Ubuntu if they are not changed. I tried, following the instructions, but got a lot of syntax errors. So, I wrote a very simple script using 'net rpc' to retrieve all users according to the AD Security and Domain Groups. I created an output folder in dansguardian to dump the rpc outputs into files. And read the files to apply filtering groups.

I have an SFTP server using OpenSSH on a server running Fedora 12. I want to chroot my sftponly users into their home directory but I want to let them have write access to their upload/ folder. Right now users can log in and view & download items, but for some reason I can't get write access to work. Here's some info:
username: testuser
group: sftponly
from /etc/passwd:

I'm sorry if this has been posted already but I REALLY did look and couldn't find the same issue(s) addressed anywhere. Similar, but not similar enough, in my opinion, to barge in and switch the subject.
Ok, I have Apache httpd set up so I can use a public_html folder inside of my /home/username directory. Now, I'm about to take a web dev course that teaches JSP/Servlets for building web applications and I'd like to set my environment up so that I can execute .jsps from my web root (/home/username/public_html) just like I would a CGI or PHP script. I have a web host that will give me JSP support for a few extra bucks a month, but I'd rather do it locally... and free.
I have Tomcat installed and running wonderfully. The test page and all the examples work fine and execute immediately. But when I try to execute a .jsp file inside of my web root (/home/username/public_html) I just get the raw Java tags and plain-old HTML rendered in my browser. I pretty much knew that wouldn't work; that'd be way too easy. I just wanted to see what would happen.
I looked through all the tomcat ".conf" files I could find to see if it was similar to setting up httpd inside of my home directory, but I didn't have any luck. It's not a file permissions problem... I've been messing with web "scripts" long enough to check that the files are executable. All of the files needed (borrowed from the examples that come with Tomcat) were in their correct paths inside of my web root, as well. Added :8080 to the end of localhost (like you do to see the Tomcat test page(s) instead of the httpd test page) but that didn't help.
I scoured the web for directions but could only find one solution that was Ubuntu-specific (just install tomcat6-user-something-or-another.deb, which doesn't exist in the Fedora repos), then I looked around here, trying every search term that seemed reasonable to me, and I can't find anything.
I realize I can just write the code and put it in a directory that does allow these things to be executed (var/lib/tomcat6/blah-blah-blah/going-by-memory) and run them from there, but I'd like to be able to just keep all of my web files in the same place; a place where I have full permission to do whatever I want... my home directory public_html.
Is this possible (has to be, right?)? Is this a dumb idea to begin with (I'm prone)? What is the best way to develop JSP/Servlets without having to deal with permissions every time I want to put a new script in a directory outside of my home directory that's already set up to allow the execution of said script?

If I want to add Windows & Mac users as Samba users, must I first add them all as Ubuntu users? If so, since none of the other users will actually be working on the Ubuntu Server, how do I disable the other non-admin users on the Ubuntu Server login screen. I am using Webmin to administer some server settings, and command line for others.

I wonder if other people have this problem. sometimes I need to duplicate most or all of a server from one machine to another. part where I most tend to have issues is with recreating the users. Sometimes the UIDs don't match up because of differences between the two systems, which gives funky results, like files owned by the wrong user.
Or, sometimes, I just need to create the same 10 users on x number of machines, and it's tedious to do this 10x times. Plus, then, if you need to change a password or delete a user, you have to do it x times.Any recommendations on how to centralize users/auth?

I have a small ubuntu server setup and I would like to create a directory that can be written to by a select number of users. I have a backup directory setup and I want to enable my account as well as three others to be able to read/write to that directory. So far I haven't had any luck.
The owner of the backups folder, a directory on a separate disk mounted under /srv/storage, was owned by root and under the root group. I added the group backups and then changed the backups directory group to backups. I then used chown to change the backups directory to 775 to enable group members to write to it. I then tried to touch a file in the backups folder but no such luck. I did notice that when I run groups, my user account isn't shown as belonging to backups but is shown under the /etc/group file. I even made sure the GID of backups is in fact below 1000.
Anyone have an idea on how to create a shared directory that everyone can create, modify and delete any file? I believe my problem is related to the fact that root is the owner of the backups directory.

I want it to be placed in /var/www And I would also want to know how more folders and files can be created in the home directory automatically.

As I regularly move between Mac and PC, I thought it would be a good idea to put all my data on an external drive. As Windows 7 and OS X have similar home folder layouts, I just simply put all the folders I need for both on the root of the external drive and changed a few settings so that the Home folder for my user is on the external drive on both Windows and OS X.
Whilst Ubuntu also has a similar structure, I cannot work out how to have it so that my users home folder is on the external drive. I have done a little research and all I can find is how to have the /home directory on another partition. a) this is not what I'm trying to do, just the folder for my user and b) this would mean formatting the external drive to extX format, which just wouldn't work for me.
I am using 9.10 (or will be once the upgrade is complete)

I am using openSUSE 11.2 with active directory for authentication. I configured it using the Window Domain Membership YaST2 module and I can login successfully (although unreliably). The problem is that I need the UID and GID of the users on my computer to match the UID and GID assigned by Active Directory. Currently it just assigns UIDs and GIDs starting at 10000, which is completely different than the UID and GID used by Active Directory and by other Linux computer runs by the school (those use CentOS). Does anyone know how to get my openSUSE computer to assign UIDs and GIDs from Active Directory?

I'm planning on hosting a main website for my school (Wordpress) and a few websites (< 10) for some teachers (Wordpress, Moodle, Joomla). Someone of the teachers needs to access his/her folder via ftp to upload documents, images,... I'am using apache 2 on ubuntu server 10.04 LTS, 4GB RAM, 2 x 500GB Hard disk (RAID hardware). The server is connected directly to the router DMZ (netgear dgn 2000).
1)If I store the teachers' websites in public_html, should I create as many user as the teachers? And how to set permissions? And where to put the main site and moodle?
2)What are your recommendations about security?
