Ubuntu Servers :: HW RAID Disk Shows Up In Fstab But Not In /dev/disk/by-uuid?

Jun 28, 2010

I have an SiI hardware SATA RAID card, with two 500GB disks in mirrored RAID configuration. When I first plugged them in and set it up, things seemed to work ok, but on boot the raid controller told me that the RAID needed rebuilding, and it would happen automatically after POST. So I didn't worry about it, and the drive mounted fine, and it's been that way for years. I just went in and manually on-line rebuilt the RAID in the controller's BIOS, and now when I boot into Ubuntu, both disks show up in fdisk, but neither show up in /dev/disk/by-uuid. Am I missing something?

Ubuntu :: Remove Grub From Other Windows Disk

Feb 14, 2010

I have windows XP on one disk, I added another disk and I installed UBuntu 9.10 on it. I wish to temporarily remove the ubuntu disk, however grub cannot load unless that disk is connected. It appears that grub has got to the windows disk and my system was booting from there. I wish to remove grub from all disks, (or at least the windows disk). I tried removing it from the synaptic package manager, but it's still there (but it looks different, maybe another version loaded or something). I'd like to just be able to boot from either disk using my bios boot menu.

Fedora Security :: Remove Encryption From An Hard Disk?

Feb 24, 2009

I was trying to install Fedora 9 on my new laptop that came with Win XP. I have selected the option to wipe out all partition and create a default layout with the Encryption option selected. But that installation got stopped on the middle, therefore I have started the installation again. This time it asked for the encryption password as expected but don't know why, its not accepting my password. I am 100% sure that the password is correct but it is not allowing me to enter into the hard disk partition section.

My question is, how do I remove encryption from my hard disk? I don't need to preserve the data, I just need to use my hard disk again. Is there any boot CD that allow us to format encrypted disks without prompting for a password?

I installed the live CD version of fedora (dual boot with vista) on my laptop. After I connected to the internet the updates downloaded and all went well. however when i restarted at the boot screen I found two instances of fedora such as

Fedora(2.6.27.9-159.fc10.i686)
Fedora(2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686)
Other

The "other" is vista. I am wondering if this is OK or whether I have two fedora. If so i would like to remove one of them to save disk space.

Ubuntu Servers :: Remove Gnome From Server?

Jul 9, 2010

It's my first experience with *nix OS. I needed server for following purposes:

Fileserver on samba
Internet gateway
VPN gateway
DNS

I installed ubuntu 10.04 server edition, but wasn't able to work without graphical environment. So I installed gnome. I installed and tweaked samba and bind9 and network manager and all works fine for now.
So I have a question. What will happen if I remove gnome? Especially with network manager? And what will I gain in performance. It's important because I have only an old Dell Optiplex 150 (933/512/10) serving as a server.

Ubuntu Servers :: Want To Remove Software RAID?

Dec 16, 2010

I am trying to build a storage server using software RAID. After getting writing RAID information to what I thought was the drives, I realized the configuration was not going to work. Since that time I have modified the RAID configuration more than once plus this is a project that was started a few months back. Between the time delays and currently written configuration, things are a confusing mess.

What I would like to do is wipe out all software RAID and start all over again. The problem is that I am unable to figure out how to get rid of it. I used DBAN to wipe out all four of my 1 TB drives which took a while. But still, the RAID configuration pulls up when I try to do a new install. Where is the RAID configuration data stored at if not on the HD? How can I scrub that information off so I can start all over again?

Ubuntu Servers :: TorrentFlux Cannot Remove Torrents From Queue?

After some searching on the web I discovered that TF has problems with torrents with 3 dots. After removing the dots, the torrent downloaded just fine.

For some reason now, I'm unable to remove the old torrent from the queue and it keeps showing as "new". Is there a file in which the queue is stored, so I can manualy remove the incorrect torrent-entry?

Ubuntu Servers :: Remove Directory Structure With Rsync

Apr 6, 2011

I have several copies of a file set with different organizational structures, but the same files. i.e.
On client1 files can be found in ~foobarfile1, ~foobarfile2, ~foo-avernfile3, ~foo avernfile4
On client2 files can be found in ~foo-barfile1, ~foo-barfile2, ~foo-tavernfile5, ~foo avernfile6
On client3 files can be found in ~file1, ~file3, ~file5, ~file7

I have access to one client and the server where I'd like all the files to be synced. I'm not worried about conflicts, just having a complete copy of all files[1-7]. Is there a way to cause RSYNC to remove the directory structure, so that I get something like:
client1% rsync files server:backup
client2% rsync files server:backup
etc
where at the destination all files will be checked against the destination set regardless of the source directory structure?

Ubuntu Servers :: Disk Full But Really Isn't?

This is a 1.5TB HD and it stopped copying at 269GB. fdisk shows the drive as 1.5TB, and ls -sh shows that only 269GB have been used. Yet I cannot add any more files. The other weird thing is that df doesn't show the hard drive, yet I know it is mounted and accessible. If it makes a difference I have it formatted to ext3.

Ubuntu :: KDM And GDM Battle At Startup - Both Launch X Servers - Remove Duplication?

Apr 28, 2010

I have both ubuntu and kde-desktop installed, and after trying KDM, switched back to GDM which worked fine for a while (although KDE changed my other gnome settings like usplash and cursors which took a while to change back). A day later, though, when I start up my system, the screen flickers a few times then shows me a message that an x-server is already running, so hit no to try loading it on '0' again or yes to try another number.

If I hit no, it will briefly show me the KDE login screen refresh a few times and go back to the menu. If I hit yes, it refreshes about 7 times and finally shows the gnome login screen. This process takes a long time and I'm not sure is great for my screen.

Ubuntu Servers :: Aptitude Wanting To Remove Packages Added With Apt-get?

Seems like always if I add a package with apt-get, next time I use aptitude to update packages on a server, the packages I added with apt-get are automatically marked for removal.

I must, in aptitude, "forget new packages" and "cancel pending actions" then update the package list, remark packages needing updating, THEN aptitude has forgotten it wanted to remove packages.

Why can aptitude and apt-get NOT get along!?

Currently I have 10.04 on all servers, thus where it still is a problem.

Ubuntu Servers :: Safely Remove Mdadm RAID Superblock

Apr 5, 2011

I bought a disk to a friend that used it in a raid array, using the entire disk for the raid usage. To put that disk on service, i used dd-rescue to copy my old disk entirely, and managed to grow and setup a the partition table without losing any data. My last step was to create a RAID between my entire old disk, with a single partition and a partition of the same size on my new disk. I ran into some problems, but i manage to somehow fix it imperfectly, but now this setup is working properly. The problems (and imperfection) came from an issue it did not suspected : at some point, the original RAID superblock of the new disk, living in /dev/sda, resisted to dd-rescue, and so it is scanned by mdadm that tries, obviously unsuccessfully, to use it.

Partition layout :

Code:

Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

[code]....

this setup is working properly besides this raid5 declared on sda, so that is shows up here and there. Since it is using the same device name that my other, proper raid setup, i don't know how to deactivate it since mdadm uses the /dev/mdx name to identify arrays.

Had a look in windows to see if I can do anything in the disk manager, but it appears I can't. Oh wise ones, please, which path should one take?

Fedora Servers :: Remove RAID Flag From Disc?

Apr 17, 2011

I would like to mount a disc that was previously used in the Intel Software Matrix RAID array (fake-raid). If I try to mount it I get:

mount: /dev/sdd1 already mounted or tempb busy

I think my dmraid is refusing to mount it beause of some RAID "flag". I would like to get rid of it, but unfortunately I cant do that on my system (theres no such RAID):

[root@ox mnt]# dmraid -r /dev/sdd
ERROR: isw: Could not find disk /dev/sdd in the metadata
no raid disks and with names: "/dev/sdd"

There are several posts recommending to uninstall dmraid completely from the system. Isnt there smarter solution in removing such a flag?
