I have Ubuntu Server 8.04 (LTS) installed and running well, but there a few packages that I'd like to upgrade, without upgrading the entire system (e.g, apache2). Is it possible to include both the Hardy (8.04) and Lucid (10.04) distributions in sources.list? Is that even safe? By the same token, can I add a Maverick repo to my list? I'm using "apache2" as an example, but this is more of a general question.
How should situations like this usually be handled, when only a select few packages would profit from an upgrade that resides in a different Ubuntu release?
On a similar note, is it possible to install two different versions of the same package using the APT tools? Let's say I want two different versions of php5 -- how would I go about doing that?
I have two 10.04.1LTS command line servers running different overall jobs. One is an upgrade that started as 9.10 and was upgraded to 10.04LTS when it came out. It has since been upgraded to a 10.04.1LTS server. It's ssh login displays the following:

I installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 Server x86_64 minimal, updated, upgraded, then I blacklisted all not used modules in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:

It's not uname, free, top, df, uptime, etc... Also doesn't appear to be anything in /proc that I've found. Anyone know what it is? I want to grab its output as part of a script. I could use other commands I suppose, but this system info output is neat and concise.
If I have to overwrite, I don't know if this will be done automatically when re-installing or If the new Ubuntu Server will be stored elsewhere on my HDD.
I only have the core install of US and was planning to build up what I want from there, starting with a GUI. There aren't any other OS's on the HDD and am using a Live CD of an UD.
I have a server running Ubuntu 8.04. I'd like to use the vm-builder utility (a.k.a. python-vm-builder, vmbuilder and ubuntu-vm-builder) to build a virtual machine image for KVM to run on this server.
I want my virtual machine to run Ubuntu 10.04, but I can't do that because the vm-builder utility only recognizes Ubuntu releases before and up to the version of Ubuntu on which the utility is run.
I'm wondering if there's a way around this without having to upgrade my server to Ubuntu 10.04, which is not really feasible at the moment. I tried installing a more recent version of the vm-builder utility using the Lucid package, but it won't install because of unmet dependencies.
After installation, I had no problems using wireless. Next, I added a new user (with administrative access). Now, when I log in as the new user, nm-applet doesn't appear in the panel and there is no wireless access. I've tried adding the Notification Area (nothing appears), making sure that the new user can connect to networks, etc with no success. System Monitor shows that nm-applet is sleeping. When I restart and login as myself, everything is still working fine. Computer: Computer: Dell Latitude D600

What additional info should I provide to assist diagnosis?
I had an install of 8.04 running Tomcat 6 on port 80. I did a marathon upgrade session to 8.10, then 9.04, then 9.10, and finally to 10.04. My website no longer loads (from Internet, LAN, or local), and a port scan shows port 80 is not open. I have removed and reinstalled Tomcat 6, to no avail.
Could it be that the 10.04 upgrade saw an existing Desktop install and locked this port down? The /etc/Tomcat6/server.xml shows it is using port 80, so that much appears to be correctly configured. Before this would give me the ROOT webapp. Anything else I can check? Does this sound like a Tomcat problem or something Ubuntu is doing?
As a side note, I have installed the Tomcat 6 Docs and Manager apps as well. These also worked before the upgrades, and do not now.
I'm currently running Hardy and XP in a dual boot setup. I want to install Lucid but don't want to overwrite my working Hardy partition and am worried by the number of reported problems with Grub2. XP is currently taking up all of my first hard drive. Second hard drive is : Hardy, then swap, then separate /home. After a bit of research, does this sound like a good plan ? ...
- Use gparted from the Live CD to shrink my Windows partition (then make sure XP still boots OK )
- Create a new partition after XP on drive 1
- Install Lucid in this new partition, using Advanced option, and tell it use my existing swap and home partitions on drive 2 (with no format, of course)
- Write Grub to this new partition
- Boot Hardy, and edit grub manually ( or use StartUp Manager, will it detect Lucid and add it as an option ? )
- Reboot and get options for Hardy, XP, and Lucid.
Does that sound correct, especially the Grub bits? When I'm happy that Lucid is OK I'll probably install Grub from it to the MBR.

However, the mount points are not having anything. It is like nothing got mounted. I would suspect there should be some way where I should be able to locate the downloaded upgrade stuff and apply it afresh again from start. Is this something possible?
After in place upgrade from Hardy to Lucid cannot start Nevernote. Removed existing version/reinstalled/removed and upgraded. No love. However, System Monitor shows that nevernote.sh is sleeping.

Unfortunately I had problems installing 10.04 from a USB. At the end of the process the master boot record was stored on the USB and not the hard disk.
But now when I login to my server I don't get the server information.
I have a desktop running Hardy and till friday it was running good. Today is monday and I guess it has got monday blues like I get every monday at work.Today I tried to start it as usual but it just refused to go further than login screen. I just can not login. It just hangs it there. I do not know what has gone wrong. I did not change anything since friday and no one else uses it. Theres nothing in logs that could give any idea. It just hangs without any reason and is still on the login screen for ever. It does ask my username and password but then it does not go further.But to my surprise I tried logging in with root and it gave me expected error that system administrator is not allowed to login from gnome.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've had issues with the later versions of Ubuntu, so in an effort to road-test Firefox 3.5 on Hardy I'd like to change my Karmic/Hardy dual boot to a Hardy/Hardy dual boot, and follow the instructions in [URL] to put the Mozilla build of 3.5 on the new installation.
I can't see any reason why a Hardy/Hardy dual-boot shouldn't work, but does anyone know of any issues with this I might not be aware of?
I have multiple computers set up in my home (self education on networking) with one used as the main machine, and the others set up as a variety of server types. The main machine is running Lucid, as gui based os. The others are all running the server version. NO Domain controller is installed, no DNS server is installed.
ALL of the server machines boot to a login prompt, allow user name and password entry, and then will fail to login with a timeout error. After anywhere from 8-15 tries, the login will eventually succeed. Error also occurs when logging in via ssh.
I would like to disable the ctrl-alt-del feature for a Lucid Lynx server.
i found some info on how to enable this in desktop environments, however nothing explaining how to disable it for a server.
I want to pull a couple of packages from Debian Testing, but I can not get apt pinning to lower the testing repo's priorityI add the testing repo to the bottom of /etc/apt/sources.lst.I then add this in /etc/apt/preferences but when I do 'sudo aptitude update' and then 'sudo aptitude full-upgrade', it wants to upgrade all packages to the versions in debian testing.

I'm trying to setup an SMF forum on a server running Ubuntu Hardy. The problem is that the website on the server was built using Django. So considering that Django uses Python and SMF uses PHP, would it be possible for both of these to coexist on the same server? If so, how? If this can't be done, I'm more than willing to rebuild the website in PHP. If I were to do this, then what do I need to do to reconfigure Apache? As of right now it's using mod_wsgi, but I'm assuming I would need mod_php. How would I set this up?

This sucks for servers.It sat there displaying the logo for ~5 minutes.Hit CTRL+ALT+F1 through F8 and didn't see anything on the virtual consoles.Finally figured out that I had to hit ESC on the plymouth screen to actually see what was going on.It said /dev/sdi1 had problems along with /dev/md0.It sat there forever with no fsck status and no HDD lights blinking.
SysRq+REISUB and tweaked the boot parameter to remove 'quiet splash' and appended 'S' for single-user mode.Got the attached screenshot.The box has been sitting like this for ~15 minutes.Not entirely sure what to report a bug against at the moment. All of a sudden, Firefox no longer remembers login information. For example, I log into Facebook and tell it to remember me. Then I close Firefox and come back a few hours later and I get prompted to log in again. It's not just Facebook. It happens with this forum, My Yahoo, and others. In Firefox preferences, I have Remember History and Remember Passwords checked. I have not run any kind of cleanup program or cleared my browsing history. This just started happening within the past couple of days.

Made an account specially for this. I have a server hosted with iWeb and obviously cant just stick the CD in and fresh install. Im looking to upgrade the entire server to 9.10 all through SSH or within 8.04's GUI all the while not having to reboot until its ready to run and configured otherwise im left with an inactive server...
View 2 Replies View RelatedHow would I get the SSH server to start before I've logged in?Basically, the problem I have is that if I'm connecedt to my computer remotely over SSH, and reboot the machine, I'm not able to SSH back in after it restarts. As far as I can tell, this is because the SSH server doesn't automatically start up until after I've logged in for the first time.How would I get around that? Surely that is a fairly common scenario for network admins (especially ones who have keyboardless and monitorless machines running).
View 13 Replies View Relatedi am having a problem with the installation with ubuntu 10.10 during the installation, i was entering my setup info (login password, timezone, etc.) when everything stopped working, it wouldnt let me continue, the forward button wouldnt work. i let it set for a good 30 minutes but it wouldnt do anything.
so unable to continue, i restarted and tried to boot from my cd drive and now it wont boot from the drive, and since i let ubuntu delete my windows partition, i cant boot from it so i basically have a blank hard drive. the cd drive will boot other cds because i booted hirens boot cd in an attempt to make sure the cd drive was functioning and ran diagnostics to make sure the drive was alright.
I have an ubuntu server with a printer plugged to it through USB. I used to set the server ip on the Printing panel to print remotelly to it, but it doesn't work anymore since I upgraded to karmic. I can see the printer in the printer panel, and I can even print a test page through the panel, but I can't print from any other application. When I come to the printing screen, the printer has the message retrieving information from printer and I can't print. I guess the cups server is working well as I can print the test page, and I used to print with hardy, looks like if the changes made in the printing panel don't have any effect on the system.
