Server :: Recover Login Info Or Overwrite Distro?

If I have to overwrite, I don't know if this will be done automatically when re-installing or If the new Ubuntu Server will be stored elsewhere on my HDD.

I only have the core install of US and was planning to build up what I want from there, starting with a GUI. There aren't any other OS's on the HDD and am using a Live CD of an UD.

Fedora :: Possible To Install KDE On Fresh HDD To Recover Lost Info?

I was following a tutorial about 6 months ago that I think may have been for a different version of Fedora than I was running. Long story short I screwed up my installation and cannot get past this screen. The login screen has lost all of it's custom GUI theme and I can't log in. For one reason because after 6 months I can't remember my password (which is also strange because I only use the same few passwords for OS logins). I also get this error that pops up and then goes away on it's own.

Install Problem!
The configuration manager defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator. I also get a caution sign icon like this one in the system tray on the login page. When I click on it it tells me that:
Starting Avahi deamon... [FAILED]

I'm not sure I want to spend the time fixing the install as I was planning on giving KDE a spin. I do, however, want to be able to recover some files on the partitions that Fedora was using. Can I just install Fedora KDE on a fresh hard drive and be able to see those partitions automatically and then transfer it to an external? Or will I have to find and mount all of those partitions manually? Also, will I even be able to gain access to those files considering I don't remember my password?

I seem to be unable to install Ubuntu at all (see this).

I was wondering if I can try installing another distro, and once the kernel and basics are up and running "update it" to Ubuntu without reinstalling the kernel and video drivers (once the Nvidia propietary drivers are up and running, all should be ok?

If yes, what would be the best distro to install and use as a launchpad to install Ubuntu?

All of a sudden, Firefox no longer remembers login information. For example, I log into Facebook and tell it to remember me. Then I close Firefox and come back a few hours later and I get prompted to log in again. It's not just Facebook. It happens with this forum, My Yahoo, and others. In Firefox preferences, I have Remember History and Remember Passwords checked. I have not run any kind of cleanup program or cleared my browsing history. This just started happening within the past couple of days.

I have two 10.04.1LTS command line servers running different overall jobs. One is an upgrade that started as 9.10 and was upgraded to 10.04LTS when it came out. It has since been upgraded to a 10.04.1LTS server. It's ssh login displays the following:

I installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 Server x86_64 minimal, updated, upgraded, then I blacklisted all not used modules in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:

I've been trying to figure this out... What command does the system use to display this at login:

It's not uname, free, top, df, uptime, etc... Also doesn't appear to be anything in /proc that I've found. Anyone know what it is? I want to grab its output as part of a script. I could use other commands I suppose, but this system info output is neat and concise.

OpenSUSE :: Recover From Console Login?

I'm trying to debug a game with gdb. The game runs in fullscreen and causes a segmentation fault and then gives control back to gdb. However, since the game is in fullscreen, the gdb session can't be viewed. So, at this point I did CTRL-ALT-F6 which blanks the screen and gives me a console to login with. I do this and determine the PID of the game process and kill it. This should remove the x-window the game was using and leave the gdb session on my gnome-terminal. I then exit the console login, which leaves me at a console login prompt.

Now is the problem. How do I return back to my gnome-terminal gdb session, ie, how do I recover from my console login? Via email, somebody informed me that CTRL-ALT-F9 works for him, but it does not for me. In fact, I've tried CTRL-ALT-<every function key> and nothing works for me. The only thing for me to do at this point is to kill the power.

(BTW, the game must be debugged in fullscreen because the problem goes away when not in fullscreen.)

I'm running openSUSE 11.3 32-bit.

i am having a problem with the installation with ubuntu 10.10 during the installation, i was entering my setup info (login password, timezone, etc.) when everything stopped working, it wouldnt let me continue, the forward button wouldnt work. i let it set for a good 30 minutes but it wouldnt do anything.

so unable to continue, i restarted and tried to boot from my cd drive and now it wont boot from the drive, and since i let ubuntu delete my windows partition, i cant boot from it so i basically have a blank hard drive. the cd drive will boot other cds because i booted hirens boot cd in an attempt to make sure the cd drive was functioning and ran diagnostics to make sure the drive was alright.

I like the server login information that gets displayed when you login to a 10.04 server. It lists disk usage, CPU usage, Temperature etc...

Unfortunately I had problems installing 10.04 from a USB. At the end of the process the master boot record was stored on the USB and not the hard disk.

But now when I login to my server I don't get the server information.

I was wondering if there is a way of knowing what is the current set timezone for a linux server. I know that "date +%Z" gives the 3 letter abbreviation of the timezone, but then CST can be interpreted as Central Standard Time (US) and as China Standard Time. I'm looking for a way I could tell what is the real timezone, e.g. "Asia/Jerusalem", "Europe/London", etc. I know that I can set the timezone by symlinking /usr/share/zoneinfo/<Timezone Name> to /etc/localtime, but when I freshly install CentOS and choose my timezone, /etc/localtime isn't a symlink at all so I can't use this info...

Server with 4 disk partitions in an RAID 5 array using md. Yesterday the array failed with two devices showing as faulty. After rebooting from rescue, I was able to force the assembly and start the array and everything looks to be okay as far as the data goes, but when I run:

I've got a system that is maxing out CPU. Running "mpstat -P ALL 3 5" shows the following.

All 5 groups show the same. My first question is why would CPU0 be the only one with intr/s and the others do not? Info.The OS is RHEL 5.4 running as a VM on ESXi 4.1. Memory doesn't appear to be an issue, the system has 8 GB and its only using about 1.5 GB. Second question, I'm positive the process that is the problem is the tomcat process. Does anyone know a good way to see whats happening with a specific process?

When we assemble a raid array, from where does it load configuration information for that array? I thought it refers to /etc/mdadm.conf file, but in my system, mdadm.conf file doesn't even contain all information. Still it is able to successfully assemble previously created device.

I have the opportunity to set up our local public library with a linux server. The primary need is for the server to land wifi users to a hotspot splash screen where they will accept terms of use and indicate what town they are from by checking a box or selecting from a dropdown menu. Users of terminals in the library would also have to indicate what town they are from. Things such as content filtering may come later. What distro would be recommended for this? Ease of use and configuration is important. They basically want to track use of the internet.
