Ubuntu Servers :: Get A Working Server Installation With Little Success?

I've been trying to get a working server installation with little success. Wailing and gnashing of teeth has occurred. Auto-cranialdepilation (pulling my hair out) is in full swing and the intravenous caffeine is running out. My target is a running Ubuntu server with an e-mail server, Samba and the ability to host a few domains for friends and a couple of volunteer organisiations. All non-profit stuff. For the hosting I need something like cpanel but not actual cpanel; you seen the price of it!
I've installed postfix from the tutorial at [URL]... I think I've got ssh working, in as much as I can putty into the server. BTW, the server is physically next to my desk. Can I get email or webmin working? Can I hell! is there any kind soul out there who knows what they're doing who would be prepared to spend a bit of time puttyed in to the server helping me set the freaking thing up? I'm a sort of noob old hand. I still have a copy of the first edition of K&R and I had the pleasure of owning a Sun 3/260 for some years; wonderful machine! So I can

I'm running an Apache web server version 2.2.11 on Fedora 10. I'm trying to get it to run a PERL cgi script but with only partial success. The script uses the PERL cgi package.
The perl script is a simple test case that creates a form to fill in. Once the submit button has been clicked it should then return the data submitted. The perl script writes this to a file called output.cgi
The intial script located in /var/www/cgi-bin/index.cgi gets executed fine when I go to [URL], this works with no probs. However once I hit the button to submit the data I then get the error
Not Found
The requested URL /cgi-bin/output.cgi was not found on this server. Apache/2.2.11 (Fedora) Server at localhost Port 80 Im not sure if its a perl problem or server setup problem, theres probably a simple switch or something but Im out of ideas at the moment.

I've been trying to get hardware acceleration (Direct Rendering) working on my system without success. I'm not even sure if my card supports DR or not, my searchs haven't turned up a result for this question. I don't know if its the video card, nvidia packages or bad configurations. Any help with the diagnosis?
i'm trying to configure my dhcp server but without success. i've installed dhcpd apt-get install dhcpd-server then i've added the following line to my dhcpd.conf
I installed F14 from my usb according to the wiki page using unetbootin. The usb boots perfectly and i get a working F14 system. I partitioned my HD with gparted and got a /,/home and swap partition, then used the installer to install the system using them. The installer finishes without a problem and ask me to reboot. When I reboot , there is a blank black screen. No grub menu , no fedora loading. I reboot with the usb and the partitions are full with the files from F14 , there is no xorg.log in the /var/log/ so f14 doesn't even start so the problem seems to be with grub.
I check the grub.conf in /boot/ , i set the timeout to 5 secs , i check that the kernel is using nomodeset (according to this wiki page there is a problem with ati), xorg.conf is using vesa as a driver and I reinstall grub with grub-install with no problems.My notebook is a acer aspire 5552 , i don't think is a hardware problem because I've used arch and opensuse with no problems in it. Fedora seems a nice distro , but this error is preventing me from using it.

I'd downloaded last version of bochs (2.4.6), then decompressed it and tried this: ./configure --enable-debugger --enable-disasm --prefix=/opt/bochs-2.4.2 --enable-mmx --enable-sse=4 --enable-fpu --enable-vbe --enable-sse-extension --enable-cpu-level=6
Pre-exsisting issue from 9.04 server, and has never worked right for me. When I try to open an X11 forwarded app on a mac using the command "ssh -X myusername@serverIP" Other linux machines have similar issues from terminal. I can login just fine and preform any actions I want that do not require X11 forwarding, like say firefox or a manager. I just get the error "Error: no display specified" when trying to do anything with X11 forwarding. I have almost no Linux experience but from tinkering and my friends tinkering wonder if I have a x authority issue.
At one point I had ubuntu desktop package installed (forwarding still did not work then), did a unclean uninstall of it installed Xubuntu. Xubuntu did nothing but throw fits saying I did not have authority to preform all sorts of actions, many relating to root access. This box is meant to be a headless file, print and web server with the ability to login remotely as a convince for administration. I have given up on having a working GUI of any kind on this box. I really do not want to reinstall because of the amount of data on the main partition. What can I start trying to look into?
i had just went out and got some older blade servers and put ubuntu server on it and when i was installing it it asked if i wanted to set an ip because it didnt get a dhcp responce i said no then because i was going to do it later when i do a ifconfig now all i get is a lo interface but if i do sudo lspci i get 2 ethernet controllers and they show as follows 2:03.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom corporation NetXtreme BCM5702X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02) 2:04.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme Bcm57j02x Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)
I installed ubuntu 8.04 server edition in my PC to deploy a web application. After the installation was complete i typed apt-get update in the terminal.It's throwing error messages like* Failed to fetch* Unable to connect to in.archive.ubuntu.com* Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.* You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problemsBut when i try it again i get the same issues.

I want to pull a couple of packages from Debian Testing, but I can not get apt pinning to lower the testing repo's priorityI add the testing repo to the bottom of /etc/apt/sources.lst.I then add this in /etc/apt/preferences but when I do 'sudo aptitude update' and then 'sudo aptitude full-upgrade', it wants to upgrade all packages to the versions in debian testing.
Is there anyone here who has ever manager to get ZoneMinder Working on an Ubuntu Server?I have been having issues even after searching the net for all solutions.I have a x86 workstation and web cam: Logitech Pro 5000 Running Ubuntu 11.04 Server x86 Installed Linux Successfully.I have Tried to install ZoneMinder successfully and can connect via URL...I can camera's etc but cannot get anything through it.Bu not able to get this resolved and thought I wouldsee if anyone has ever manager to get this working on Ubuntu and can mentor me on this.
I have a headless 10.04 ubuntu server ( running at home. Because I am a student I want to save some power by suspending the server when I really don't need it (school, sleep etc.). I have gotten WOL to work for me, BUT the suspend does not work.
I have tried pm-suspend and s2ram, but they both have same result; I lose all control (seems like a freeze) from my SSH, but it does not disconnect, and the server responds to pings. But I cant connect via ssh, or use the fileserver or any of the roles it has. I assume there might be something locking it when it tries to suspend, but I really don't know where to start looking (logs and stuff). I have googled quite a bit, but almost all failed suspends are some funky laptop issues, and this is not...
Clean install of 10.04 Server 32 bit.Only services OpenSSH Server and Print Server.Machine boots and can be accessed through ssh.Virtual terminals (cntl-alt-1,2,3,4,... do not result in video to the monitor (no sync) or a display.If I type blind, I can log in, ssh back to my other machine, and create a file. So the virtual terminal is there and listening to the keyboard and running, just not creating a display.
This machine has been working fine with 08.10 for quite time up until yesterday, so I don't believe it is a hardware problem.Any ideas why the video on the virtual terminals would not work?
I am wondering how to setup a wireless connection (I am using WPA or WEP, does anyone know how I can figure that out) and I don't have access to a wired connection and I am not able to reset my router. Does anyone know how I can get my wireless connection working?
I think I can eliminate Media Companion as the problem since all other samba servers work with it.
I want to trouble shoot this but don't even know where to start. How do I figure out what makes OPENWRT samba server different from the other 100% working FREENAS and PC-01 Servers?
Now when I try to pull an Ip from the 96.63.0.0/24 subnet I do not see the options in the DHCPACK from the server. The client gets an IP 96.63.0.12 but no options are present in the DHCPACK or any other DHCP transaction. I have confirmed this trhough tcpdumps on the server and client.

For the past 4 days Ive been trying to install ubuntu 10.10 64bit with no success. I am a total newbee when it comes to linux so I will be needing your kind help with it.At first I installed ubuntu to one of my portable drives with no problems, but now I want to install it to my hard drive and have a dual boot between windows XP and Ubuntu.
When I arrive to the manual partitioning part is where I get lost. I have totally destroyed my windows installation 5 times already ( thank god for norton ghost for restoring my windows installation. )
I have read several articles and blog posts regarding a dual boot system with windows and Ubuntu but none of them cover my specific situation so I keep getting lost and screwing things up.
I have an old dell server that I decided to try to install ubuntu server on. My problem is that my keyboard stops working after making my initial selection of installer language and install option. As soon as I select install, I receive a message stating that IRQ 14 has been disabled. Next, I am faced with a screen asking me to select my installation language using the tab, space, and enter keys. But to no avail, my keyboard no longer works. No arrows, no tab, no space, no enter, he num lock key will not toggle it's respective LED.
I should note that I'm using a PS/2 mouse (there are no USB ports on this server). I've also tried multiple PS/2 keyboards, and all act the same. I've looked in my BIOS settings, and the only option I see is for enabling/disabling the on-board PS/2 keyboard. I have not tried disabling that, because I have a funny feeling I would lock myself out of the server for good. I also tried non-graphical mode (at least I think that's what I did). I held in the shift key while booting the CD, and selected no to using graphics. At the "boot:" prompt, I just hit enter.

I have a somewhat old box that I want to install 11.04 on for experimentation. Eventually I'll want to run server and LVM, but for now I'm just going for simple. The box is an AMD 4800+ with 3 SATA hard drives. It previously ran Windows, but I've made every effort to blow all HD contents away and start fresh.The big picture problem is that I can't reliably get the system to boot from the SATA drives. After my first install of the 64-bit 11.04 from CD, it installed OK and booted fine. I then subsequently reinstalled the next day and the troubles began.
I've been booting into the "trial mode" from CD, then attempting to reinstall from there.After getting all the way through the setup, it gets to the grub install. It says that it can't install grub. It then offered to install it on the other /SD'x' devices (/SDA, /SDC, etc...) but failed to install grub there as well.Thinking there may have been leftover state from a previous install, I've tried blowing away all the contents of the 3 hard drives. However, I can't do that either. Running the "disk editor" from within the "trial" mode, any attempt to erase a partition is met with a failure, with the error message "daemon is inhibited".
So the two big questions I have are:1) Why is the grub install failing, and how can I deal with it?2) Is there some expectation of what the drives look like prior to an install? And if so, how go I get them into that state? I'm lost on how to "uninhibit the daemon"If it's helpful, I grabbed the relevant section of the log file that has what looks like more detailed errors from the grub install.

I am currently trying to upgrade the Apache installation on our server from v2.2.14 to v2.2.19 using:

Unfortunately I seem to have hit some walls. When trying to execute ./config.nice I get the following error:
./config.nice: 33: /build/buildd/apache2-2.2.14/configure: not found
Google have not yielded any results as yet. If I leave out this step and use configure, make and make install, v2.2.19 gets installed, but to a different directory and all the config will need to be reformatted as it seems it does not use the Ubuntu Apache config structure.

I have very interesting problem after ~10 PHP Fatal error, php 5(latest one) in apache2(latest one) in Ubuntu Server 10.10(with latest updates) just do not work. I had a problem with apache2 and getting .htaccess working. I have done some things and i believe its working the ErrorDocument command is anyway. I have a 64 bit Dell laptop happily running 10.04 32-bit and Windows 7 booting with GRUB. I want to also install Lucid server on a spare 20GB empty partition and I would like to have Lucid server available in the GRUB menu along with Lucid 10.04 and Windows 7.
I don't want to blow away what I already have working and last time I booted from the server CD to try to install it (9.10), it didn't look as easy as when I installed workstation. Will an install of Lucid server gracefully and safely allow itself to be put on a spare partition and install itself in GRUB or so I need to do this manually? If I lose my Lucid workstation install, I am in trouble.
