Ubuntu :: Apps Unusable Due To Display Resolution?

Aug 11, 2010

I've just installed BitDefender on my 10.04 netbook, updated and activated it, completed a scan, and found Backdoor.Generic.284566 The thing is, it won't let me delete/quarantine the nasty. BitDefender does give me a warning about my screen resolution being too low (800x600), i believe this may be the problem. The option buttons are not visible on the screen, therefore I cannot use the program properly.(i tried the max resolution 1024x600, but to no avail )

I would prefer to be able to use the rpmfusion nvidia driver instead of the closed driver but when I try it, KDE4 runs fine for a while but then the whole display starts blinking and the cpu % goes to 99% for XMy PC is Fedora 12 x86_64, the video card is a XFX 8800GT[URL]1) installed the kmod-nvidia-190.53-1.fc12.1.x86_64 and dependencies2) blocked nouveau with rdblacklist=nouveau in grub.conf, 3) Ran: setsebool -P allow_execstack on4) fixed the xorg.conf (I had to move my old xorg.conf out of the way and merged my DontZap option back in)
5) rebootedI did not yum remove the nouveau driver,.... didn't seem necessary. My desktop will run for a while but inevitably starts flashing uncontrollably. I can't even ssh to it to run init 3 to kill X (I can ssh to it but for some reason I can't su to root to kill X).

Ubuntu :: Changing A Display Resolution If You Have A Higher Resolution In 9.1?

Dec 7, 2009

I searched the archives and didn't find anything on this, and was just wondering if there is a problem if you load Ubuntu 9.1 and have a display that's higher than 1024x768. I'd prefer a machine with a higher res, but I've heard that Ubuntu will only go as high as 1024x768.I'm guessing, however, that by 9.1, it should recog the higher res while loading and it won't be a problem, but thought I'd check before shelling out on a machine with a nicer display.

Ubuntu :: Some Apps Don't Like Wide Display?

Apr 29, 2010

I'm running 9.10 with a Radeon X300 video. Two displays, one is 1920x1200, the other is 1600x1200. I'm finding that some apps don't like to be too far to the right (anything past about 2600 x-resolution). If I move a window that far to the right, some of the controls are blank. A good example is OpenOffice. If I move an OO app too far to the right, the text in the main menu items will all be blank. All I see are the icons and the underscores for the keyboard shortcuts. There are other apps that do it, but OpenOffice is the most popular.

I tried re-configuring my displays, and it is always the one on the right. If I stack them top-to-bottom, I don't see the problem. If I reduce resolution, the problem diminishes, until I reduce the total x-resolution to below about 2600.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Display For Two Different Apps?

Dec 19, 2010

I require the use of two apps that appear to have similar problems and am wondering if they stem from the same problem. Both have been installed from .deb files and are not part of the official repos. The first is OpenCPN which, when installed, creates a menu entry. The the initial splash screen displays but after clicking OK, nothing appears at all.The second is Inform 7, which was working fine for a couple of days. Now the Game tab is empty. This is the tab that renders a version of the final game whilst working on it.Without knowing the two apps I realise it is difficult to get an understanding of what is wrong with them but it seems to be my machine that's at fault, not the apps as apparently they run fine on other people's machines. What checks can I do to get to the bottom of these problems?

General :: Alter Resolution Of GL Apps/games?

Jan 1, 2010

I have just got an Nvidia GT240 card and have for the first time set up dual monitors (An LCD @ 1024x768 and a projector @ 1152x864) I have them set up as twinview so I can drap/drop between the two and run compiz across the two. My problem is in running some games (Hedgewars, Powermanga, I have no tomatoes) These games run full screen and currenlty span the two monitors which is not workable as they are not side by side and run different resolutions. How can I tweak these apps to run on only one monitor without altering the xorg.conf and losing the functions mentioned above? I have found a resolution setting in Hedgewars but it only give one option and does not allow me to overtype it.

Ubuntu :: Gnome-panel Is At 100% And Completely Unusable Rendering Gnome Unusable

Nov 19, 2010

I recently bought a second monitor and I had this set up perfectly fine with two panels on my primary display and one on my secondary. I've now gone away for the weekend (leaving the monitor) and I went to turn on my laptop and it didn't work.

When I login to a gnome session (or indeed a failsafe gnome session) I just got two horizontal white bars (where the panels would be). I switch to a terminal, login and run top and see that gnome-panel is on 100%. Running 'killall gnome-panel' does nothing (tried a few times).

I've had to install xfce4 just to type this message. Is there any way I can 'reset' gnome-panel or any other fix? Or even a workaround would be nice. I'm on 9.10 by the way. I am going to upgrade at some point but its not really an option yet.

Ubuntu :: GTK Apps Don't Display Correctly On KDE Until Opening Appearance Preferences?

Jul 18, 2011

I recently installed KDE and began using that instead of Unity (less buggy, IMHO) and it was running smoothly until I began configuring my GTK applications for transition in that. I installed the Oxygen-GTK them from gnome-look.org and set that as my default theme for GTK applications under the KDE appearance preferences.

When I log in, however, GTK applications just use the stock Xorg theme until I run "gnome-appearance-properties" in my terminal.I believe that a fix involving .gtkrc would suffice, but I honestly cannot configure it no matter how hard I try.

General :: Display X Apps Running On Host1 And Displaying On Host2 ?

Feb 20, 2010

I have three boxes with lenny debian recently installed. I'd like to be able to display X apps running on host1 and displaying on host2. "xhost +" would do the trick for me if I could get it to work but as far as I can tell it does nothing. (BTW, I'm aware of the security risks. This is not a concern for me. I'm safely behind a good firewall. I'm also aware of "ssh -X" but that won't quite solve my problem. See the long version below.) I suspect that Debian secures the xhost command out of the box in some way but I can't seem to figure out what it is. If that is true and someone can show me how to reset it, or direct me to appropriate documentation I think that would solve my problem.

Here's the long version:

What I really want to do is play xbattle with my kids but I need to be able to display the board to three different screens. In xbattle the command line is: % xbattle -red me -blue host1:0 -green host2:0 {and more stuff of no consequence to my question}

This opens a game board for player red locally, player blue on host1 and player green on host2. Or at least it should. If there is a way to make this work with "ssh -X" (or anything else for that matter) I'll be happy to use that instead, but so far as I can tell "ssh -X" only lets me redirect the display back to the one I ssh'd from whereas I need to direct to multiple displays to run xbattle.

Ubuntu Installation :: X86 64-bit 9.10 Very Low Display Resolution?

Apr 19, 2010

I purchased a lenovo G550 recently and immediately dumped the Windows OS for Ubuntu 9.10. The display is currently defaulting to 1366x768. From reading it looks as though this display can support both 16:9 and 16:10 aspects. I have ran through the xrandr commands attempting to set my resolution to something...anything bigger than 1366x7768 (I'm used to 1600x1200 from my old T61, so this is painfully small). As a test I am trying to get 1920 1200, from my xrandr results it looks like it should be within the lcd's range. xrandr commands failed on me as I have seen on a couple other intel based resolution problems. I don't fully understand the root of the problem and have not had any luck in my searches. So I have also attempted to manually create the xorg.conf file, not luck yet.

Code:
user@Home:~$ sudo ddcprobe
vbe: VESA 3.0 detected.

Ubuntu Installation :: Won't Display The Proper Resolution

Feb 2, 2010

I installed 9.10 on a computer I'm working on, and right away the graphics went out. It won't display the proper resolution without shoving the display significantly to the left.

After MUCH Googling, I found that this can be fixed by a driver called i915. After much MORE Googling, I found [URL], which as you can imagine filled me with relief.

And THEN I try to follow the instructions and discover to my pure horror that GRUB has been gutted and made unusable in 9.10. GRUB2 just simply does not seem to have an option to insert the i915 driver into my boot command.

should I just forget this unstable release and burn a 9.04 disk instead?

Installation went beautifully, the screen placed correctly, However, once it was actually running, the display is totally wrong. Looks like it's too far to the left and up - there's nothing on the screen except for background, at 1920x1080 resolution. Once I change the resolution to lower, it works.

Ubuntu Installation :: Monitor Display Resolution 9.10 X86 Xfce4?

Mar 8, 2010

CHECK OUT THIS THREAD INSTEAD: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...93#post8937093 I got a problem with my xorg.conf file. I'm just not able to add display resolutions. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 x86 with Xfce4 desktop enivorment. I got an old Nvidia 6600 GT. I'm on a 21" IBM CRT, and i know that it's good for 2048x1536 @ 75hz.

I know that it can handle 30-130 khz Horizontal and 40-170 hz Vertical.

I also know that i would like to be able to use 1600x1200 @ 85hz.

Right now I'm just not able to go past 1024x768 @ 50hz. I've installed the restricted nvidia driver from the popup restricted driver menu, also tried to downgrade to an earlier driver, did'nt work, then i upgraded again to the newest driver that was easily available through Envyng-gtk. Still no more resolution choiches.

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg just don't work. Nothing happens when i write it in the terminal.

Now i'm starting to get frustrated

Fedora :: 13 - Set Display Resolution 1152x864?

Aug 3, 2010

I use an old notebook 15' LCD, (4:3) with the ridiculous (for fly eyes) resolution of 1400x1050. My eyes are not young anymore. On Ubuntu I could select the resolution of 1152x864 which is fine (1024x768 is too big and really makes me look like a grand-daddy...). How can I set 1152x864 on Fedora 13, if it is possible and how? Recent distribution do not rely on a xorg.conf file anymore. I use an older 9000 Mobility Radeon, and there are no proprietary drivers anymore, but the open source one. I gave it a try. Install the package to create an Xorg default and edited my resolution

Code:
# Xorg configuration created by system-config-display
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Default Layout"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
[Code]...

I have changed the keyboard option to kill X with <Ctrl><Alt><Backspace> keys. That does not work--yet. No 1152x864 resolution.
