Debian Configuration :: Varnish Not Able To Run On Non Default Port

Oct 9, 2015

On this moment i build an webenvironment with wordpress, apache2, debian 8. On this moment i try to impelement Varnish.

By default this application use the port 6081. I try to put apache on port 8080. This already works but i get varnish not running on port 80.

You can see below that varnish still listen to the default port 6081. How can i fix this?

Code: Select allroot@webI:/home/beheerder# netstat -lpt
Active Internet connections (only servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address           Foreign Address         State       PID/Program name
tcp        0      0 *:ssh                   *:*                     LISTEN      2917/sshd
tcp        0      0 *:6081                  *:*                     LISTEN      3717/varnishd
tcp        0      0 localhost:6082          *:*                     LISTEN      3699/varnishd

[Code] ....

To test another port i have also try to start Varnish on port 85.

Code: Select allvim /etc/default/varnish
DAEMON_OPTS="-a :85
             -T localhost:6082
             -f /etc/varnish/default.vcl
             -S /etc/varnish/secret
             -s malloc,256m"

I have restart the apache and varnish services. I have also rebooted the server but varnish will not listen on port 80 (or other non default ports). On port 6081 the application works fine. But how can i fix this ?

Source Varnish port 80

I can use the application with the following command

Code: Select allvarnishd -f /etc/varnish/default.vcl -a 0.0.0.0:80.

But why is this not working with the normal config file. Varnish are than listen to port 80. With every server reboot i need than to run this command. So i would like to use the config file.

Debian Configuration :: - Privoxy Default.action Syntax?

Sep 15, 2010

So I was reading this thread on internet privacy and decided to 'upgrade' my system. I installed privoxy and tor and chained them from squid so it looks like this: iceweasel >> squid >> privoxy >> tor. All is working well except when I go to edit my privoxy default.action file I get a fatal error. I've got version 3.0.9-1 The original line in the newly installed default.action file. #+hide-referer{forge}

I edited it by simply removing the #. +hide-referer{forge} Then:su -c '/etc/init.d/privoxy force-reload'And I get this in the logfile.Sep 14 16:41:36.260 Privoxy(7f4fa64756e0) Fatal error: can't load actions file '/etc/privoxy/default.action': first needed line (361) is invalid: +hide-referer{forge} I've even copy/pasted from the manual and to no avail.Have I been looking at to much text for the last two days? What am I missing?

Ubuntu Servers :: Postfix+dovecot Not Working As Expected?

Nov 9, 2010

I have tried to find solution in existing posts but could not specifically find any with my kind of issues and hence a new post on oft repeated subject !! -- and apologies for a long long post here. Here is where I am ..On a AMD 64bit machine - I have ubuntu 10.10 desktop installed. I want this development machine to support virtual mailboxes so that I can use them from multiple apps and create real life deployment situations.I installed postfix + dovecot following the tutorials available here and current state is - I can send mails using telnet sessions and I see that the mail files are getting created in /Maildir form as I have directed in the conf files. I have configured Thunderbird mail client as well.

Issue #1: Mail sending works from Thunderbird but it always responds back with 'No mail on server' message when I try to receive mails. SMTP is configured with STARTTLS and POP3 with None (i.e. plain text password)Issue #2: Also, while going thru conf, logs and during testing - I found a few things which defer in this installation for authentication. I have given the session transcripts here.Issue #3: That being major issue - I also want to configure my virtual users to use TB client to access their mails - I did not find any tutorials or pointers towards that in my search for past few days. If I send mails to a non-Unix virtual user - the mail gets stored into /home/vmail/<domain>/<user>/new directory. Here are the conf files.main.cf for postfix

Code:
# See /usr/share/postfix/main.cf.dist for a commented, more complete version
# Debian specific: Specifying a file name will cause the first

Ubuntu Servers :: MDADM Not Acting As Expected On Latest Version?

May 31, 2011

All, This is a x-post from the Linuxmint forums. I did this testing on Mint 11 install - but also tried the exact same thing on an Ubuntu 11.04 release and had the exact same output to deal with..Follow along: I'm having trouble with MDADM.... It's not acting like I expect it to.... hopefully someone can enlighten me.

Code:
MintRAID aaron # mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=5 --raid-devices=3 /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd
MintRAID aaron # mkfs.ext3 /dev/md0
Added this line to /etc/fstab:[code]...........

I update my fstab with /dev/md127 instead of /dev/md0 and it seems to be working ok.What in the heck is going on? Why all of the naming descrepencies? Can someone help me understand what's going on? I have used the same steps on other (and older) distros and haven't had these troubles. (Ubuntu 9 or 10 something and Cent/RHEL 5.5) I've always named the first array md0, and it's always stayed md0 through reboots, etc etc etc...

Ubuntu Servers :: Creation Of RAID-0 Array In Disk Utility Resulting In Smaller Than Expected Array?

Sep 27, 2010

I have a NETGEAR ReadyNAS NV+ with four 1TB drives in a RAID-5 array. This is our primary file storage. This has previously been backed up to a hardware RAID-0 array directly attached to our Windows server. The capacity of this backup array is no longer sufficient. So the plan was, take a bunch of 200GB to 320GB drives (And a 750) I had kicking around, chuck them in a couple of old SCSI drive enclosures I have collecting dust, attach them via IDA/SATA-to-USB adaptors to a USB hub, attach that to the server, create a JBOD array spanning the disks, and back up the NAS to that. Performance is not an issue as this is just to be used for backup, with the idea being as near to zero cost as possible (Spend so far = NZ$100ish).

The first hurdle I struck was Windows not supporting Dynamic Disks on USB drives (Required to create a spanned volume). At first I resisted using another machine (i.e. a machine running Ubuntu) as I didn't want to dedicate a piece of hardware to backing up the NAS. I then decided it would be acceptable to do this via a VM, which is what I've done.So I have 10.04 running under VMWare Server 2.0.2 under Windows Server 2008 R2. The disks are all presented to the VM. I wasn't sure if I was going to end up creating the array under LVM or something else, but I noticed Disk Utility has an option to create an array, so I tried that. When I add two 250GB drives, the array size is 500GB. When I then add a 160GB drive, the array size drops to 480GB. Huh? If I keep adding disks (Regardless of order) the final array size comes out at 1.8 TB, as per the attached screenshot. Now with the following drives, I expected something more like:

160 + 250 + 250+ 750 + 250 +200 + 200 + 250 + 320 + 250 + 320 = 3.2TB

Am I missing something or making a false assumption somewhere?

Ubuntu Servers :: Smtp Relay - "invalid/host-not-in-DNS Return Address Not Allowed"?

Mar 8, 2010

I installed the citadel suite on ubuntu server 9.10 Email obviously works fine internally. I tried to setup a smart host to send my mail through as my isp(Verizon) obviously blocks port 25. I tried to send out the Verizon smtp server on port 587. In the Administration> Domain names and Internet mail configuration>Smarthosts. My smarthost entry on the citadel configureation page above was usernameassword@outgoing.verizon.net:587 but after sending an outgoing email, it comes back with a "invalid/host-not-in-DNS return address not allowed"

I have also tried using gmail and a hotmail account with the respective smtp address's in but they come back with "Must issue a STARTTLS command first".I have researched both messages and come up with squat that has helped me.

I know that my mail will have to go out through a smarthost of somekind. So is am I on the right track with choosing verizon/gmail/or something else as my smtp relay, or is there a free service out there that I can send email through(haven't found one if there is)

Anyone else ever setup Citadel and got around their isp blocking port 25?I am also not sold on citadel, it was just the first/ nicest looking one that I found.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub 2 Missing In Action ?

Feb 13, 2011

After a hard drive failure I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS in the secondary drive. The intention was to have keep the machine functional until I could reinstall XP and have a dual boot. I replaced the failing drive and reinstalled XP.

The main reason for keeping windows is for using Itunes and a ton of music on the Ipod. I can get into the Ubuntu using Super Grub2 and did try repairing Grub 2 with rescutux. I can of course use the super grub2 disk to boot into Ubuntu but would like to repair Grub2 so I have the choice at boot without the disk.

Here is the readout from the boot info script.

Ubuntu :: Gnome-settings-daemon Does Not Work As Expected?

Oct 28, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a brand new HP EliteBook 8540w with an Nvidia card. To get the machine to work at all I have to use the proprietary nvidia driver. The downside is that when I use this driver gnome-settings-daemon seems to crash when I start the machine which results in a ugly theme. To fix this I have to run the following command:

Code:
sudo gnome-settings-daemon

After this the theme is re-applied. If I try to run gnome-settings-daemon as my regular user I get the following messages:
