Ubuntu :: How To Change A Nautilus Icon (an Nautilus Action)

May 16, 2010

I've added a new Nautilus action and I'd like to use another icon that those provided in the nautilus item con list (see attachment).

But whatever image I try (some PNG or even SVG files) I can't get them to be displayed. It seems there is a very special format, size, type to match the Gnome/GTK+/Nautilus icon requirements...

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Nautilus Will Not Remember Default Action

May 28, 2010

I did a fresh install of 10.04 a couple of weeks ago, and all seemed well, but lately when I double-click on, say, an OpenOffice (.odt) file in Nautilus, I get the following message:The file '/home/zerubbabel/Documents/Teachings/Queue/2010.05.15-A02.odt' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit.(The pop-up window title reads: "Blocked: wine start /unix"). I've repeatedly set the "Open with..." and checked "Remember this application...", but it doesn't "stick".

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Action To Find Files In Directories

Aug 27, 2010

When I am in Nautilus, I want to be able to select a directory, then right click (or some other action) to do a file find on that directory. The gnome-search-tool would be a good candidate for this, if it could be an action in Nautilus. I know I can do a file find through other means, but Nautilus seems to be where I am when I want to search directories.

Jun 12, 2011

When I try to to do something like creating a new folder in nautilus the screen freezes. i'm still able to move my mouse but clicking has no effect. it also happens when renaming a file or deleting a file or folder. I can access the commandline when the screen is frozen and i found out that the compiz process was taking 100% of my cpu, after killing the process the system works fine again. I also noticed that the file action wich coused the freeze was done, so i try to create a folder the system freezes i stop the compiz process and the folder is there. The problem doesn't occour When is start the session using ubuntu classic with no effects. I tried reistalling compiz and the video driver but whitout any luck. I would really appreciate it if someone has a solution for this because its very frustrating.

Debian Configuration :: - Privoxy Default.action Syntax?

Sep 15, 2010

So I was reading this thread on internet privacy and decided to 'upgrade' my system. I installed privoxy and tor and chained them from squid so it looks like this: iceweasel >> squid >> privoxy >> tor. All is working well except when I go to edit my privoxy default.action file I get a fatal error. I've got version 3.0.9-1 The original line in the newly installed default.action file. #+hide-referer{forge}

I edited it by simply removing the #. +hide-referer{forge} Then:su -c '/etc/init.d/privoxy force-reload'And I get this in the logfile.Sep 14 16:41:36.260 Privoxy(7f4fa64756e0) Fatal error: can't load actions file '/etc/privoxy/default.action': first needed line (361) is invalid: +hide-referer{forge} I've even copy/pasted from the manual and to no avail.Have I been looking at to much text for the last two days? What am I missing?

Ubuntu :: After Running Nautilus As Root

Oct 18, 2010

In maverick, I made a menu shortcut to be able to run nautilus as root (gksu nautilus), when I need to (for example, to clean the /var/apt/archives or anything like that). When I used this in intrepid, karmic or lucid, this worked fine.In maverick, when I do so, I always afterwards have the gnome desktop of root and still the rights of root outside nautilus. I have to logoff and re-login as my user to see my personal background and gnome environment again.

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Running But Not Opening

Jul 26, 2011

i just turned my computer on a few minutes ago (turned it off due to a storm), and immediately noticed my desktop icons were gone. so i went to places>desktop, and nautilus failed (and continues to fail) to open. i simply see a waiting cursor and a window tab saying "opening Desktop", and nothing happens. i checked system monitor, and nautilus is running, and its not listed as being unresponsive. when running from the terminal, i get no errors or anything, it just doesnt run. i did see that when i turned on my computer, i got a splash screen saying it was checking my discs for errors, but it only took about 15 seconds and didnt find any errors. also, right clicking on my desktop doesnt do anything, either. not sure what happened.

Ubuntu :: Get Errors Even When Running Nautilus Under Gksudo?

Sep 12, 2010

On Linux Mint, there is this theme called WildMint, looks somewhat like an older Ubuntu Studio theme. Anyway, I have been trying to find how to get it to work on Ubuntu instead of Mint. It is nowhere to be found on Gnome-Look and I've tried to search everywhere for it. Also, I've tried just copying the folder from /usr/share/themes but I just get errors even when running Nautilus under gksudo.

Debian Configuration :: Nautilus Segfault Preventing Login By Gdm

Mar 5, 2010

I removed my .gnome and .nautilus folders and .notifier file. it is working now. I do not know exactly which of these 3 fixed it but I hope this might help someone else!I have some major issue with nautilus which is preventing me from loogging in into my system which is kind of criticle this weekend.I'm running Squeeze with latest updates.

The problem:Today gnome gave some problems caus my taskbar was suddently gone. I couldn't get it back to i reinstall gnome-desktop and updated my whole system. At the update some yes/no questions on a blue screen asking me to restart cups etc had corrupted yes/no buttons. Weird character sets were shown. Well that can happen sometimes i thought. After reinstalling gnome i can't login anymore. My screen keeps flashing while it shows the loading icon of the mouse.Anyone got suggestions? I can't find similar problems on the internet, only problems that happen while already logged in. In my case the segfault prevents gdm starting!

Debian Configuration :: Nautilus Can't Browse Local Network

Apr 21, 2010

I have a new Debian 5.04/ppc install on a G5 tower and it's not able to browse the local network. The clean install could see the network, then I installed the Samba server, and it hasn't worked since. Samba server never really worked, and I'm guessing I messed something up. I've reinstalled network-manager, and removed / reinstalled samba.

I have a small home network (6 machines) running wired and/or wireless, pc/mac and linux. This machine can PING other machines by name and IP address. This machine can PING itself by name and IP address
Other machines can PING this machine by IP address only, not by name.Nautilus network browser only shows the "Windows Network" icon, which, when clicked, shows an empty window.I've got networking up fine on all my other machines but this one is stumping me.

Ubuntu :: Move Nautilus Location Bar In Nautilus Up By Toolbar?

Apr 11, 2010

Does anyone know how I can move the location bar in nautilus up by the toolbar, as shown by this pic:
http://i39.tinypic.com/2qdsyll.jpg

I'd rather not have to download the source of nautilus and edit the code / compile it myself.

By the way, a guy on Ubuntu Forums thought this was a mockup. It's not. It's the regular version of Nautilus, only I removed some toolbar buttons through the /usr/share/nautilus/ui xml files.

I just want the location bar next to the toolbar to conserve screen space, and be a bit more like Finder.

Debian Configuration :: Running A Local Ftp Server?

Nov 2, 2010

What would be necessary to run an ftp server (or a web server) on my local PC so that other people I know could access it and download stuff from it? The idea is to share photos, videos etc with friends/family where the files are a bit too big for email. (All 100% legal, own-content, no copyright issues, needless to say). Security isn't that vital, I'd just put files in the ftp directory, email the link and let them download the files, then remove them again. No passwords are required, and no uploads.

Obviously there's the problem that both computers have to be on at the same time, and I assume I'd have to change my computer's firewall settings and my router's settings to allow the traffic through, but my question is more basic than that - is it even possible? My internet connection is through a router, and as I understand it, my router has the IP address, not my computer. So I can connect through my router using my computer's IP address, but only my router knows my computer's IP address, and all the rest of the internet just sees my router and its IP address. Which means (I think) that I can't just send my IP address for my family to connect to, because that only gets them as far as my router, and the router would have no idea what to do with such requests. Am I right so far?

So is there any way for my family's computers to contact an FTP server or a web server running on my computer? Or does it require some kind of intermediary server to act as a traffic-forwarder? Is there such a thing? I'm assuming that setting up little private torrents would be fiddly and inefficient. Or would it be better/simpler to use one of the free filesharing services and put up with the (sometimes not too family-friendly) adverts associated with them?

Debian Configuration :: INIT Not Running A Script?

Mar 23, 2011

I have a firewall script setup to run in rc2.d. There is a K99 for it and then an S99. The problem however, is that it isn't being called. No errors, no logs, nothing. The symlinks in /etc/rc2.d point to /etc/init.d/script, but nothing ever happens on boot or shutdown. I can manually do /etc/init.d/script start and it will start just fine, including printing a line that it is starting. What's going on here? The permissions are the same as the other scripts in the init directory, so I doubt that is a problem.
