Ubuntu Servers :: VPN Refuses To Setup?
Jun 28, 2011
I recently acquired an old dell desktop with a pretty decent sized hard drive and installed ubuntu server 11.04 on it. Currently, I am using it as a Web, FTP, Print, and media server.
I would like to also use it as a VPN. I have literally followed 30 guides from the internet and it has not worked.
setting up lp2tp/ipsec or pptpd. I would prefer lp2pt/ipsec with PSK.

started setting up my 3rd ubuntu server under the OS of Ubuntu Linux 9.04 64 bit. I have configured the server to allow root access and am using this to execute this file. As you can see from the screenshot of PuTTy, the file exists but is refusing to load up. I am also able to nano the file. I have tried moving the file to /root/ and still had no luck.

I have slapd-server running but it seems to refuse connections in a very odd way. Wireshark shows that everytime JavaEE-client tries to connect, only 2 packages are sent. As I understand, in tcp/ip protocol, the first is just "hello, who's there". The last is just a message consisting of ACK and RST. I think RST means "we're done". At this point I don't think any credentials are checked so I don't know what could be wrong

Proftpd has been running OK until recently, when I tried to connect using my laptop. All I get is the proftpd-socket file under /var/run/proftpd/ I cant' find any log files with error messages in them. I have checked /var/log/messages - nothing in there either. I have rebooted the machine after re-installing proftpd. Still it wont start Is there any way to find out why proftpd has decided not to start any more?

I have a machine (lets called it machine 1) with two networks card, eth0 and eth1. Both have static IPs. Once in a while the machine refuses to give access to the Internet via Firefox (eth0 is the route to router). Other machines on the network have no problems accessing the Internet. Eventually the machine would just magically start working again, but this time it just seems to have stayed broken. I've done some simple diagnostics and found:
a) I have another machine running Apache with a Wiki on our network - [URL]. Machine 1 is unable to connect to this Wiki. I get 'the connection has timed out'. I can ping 192.168.1.73 and it responds in the usual fashion.
b) If I try to ping www.google.com it times out with: ping: unknown host www.google.com. I can ping google using its IP address.
c) On machine 1 I have tried traceroute on both www.google.com and its IP and I just get:
1 * * *
2 * * *
And so on until hop 30. Doing this on any other machine on the network works. So while it seems I can ping internally in our network and outside, but when it attempts anything traceroute or URL related it does not work.

I ended up setting up a basic linux file server as a pdc for that office. Our main office is a windows 2000 ads domain. The two offices are connected with a vpn. I only have two users at the new location so I simply have the linux and samba usernames/passwords setup manually. I would like to know if it is possible to setup a domain trust between the two sites so I don't have to create a username/password in the remote site for every user at the main office to access. I did some searching but came up empty.

I've built a web hosting server with ubuntu 9.10 desktop edition at home and it's up and running.how to get and set subdomains. What I mean is that I have a purchased domain [URL] and I want to add as many sub domains as I want such as [URL] so on. And more importantly every single subdomain must belong to each account.
sub domain account name
-------------------------------------------
sub1.example.com john
sub2.example.com steave
sub3.example.com myname
In this case, there are three accounts for ubuntu and each account has a permission to the corresponding sub domain only. p.s My DNS is managed by my domain company and it provides a web page where I can forward(not sure, but there are fields that I can type my sub domains) subdomains and my external IP addresss up to 20(just in case this info matters).

I've been working though [URL] tutorial trying to get openldap working.
When I get to the point where i'm setting up the client. More specifically when I do ldapaddgroup testgroup I am sent this error
"You must have OpenLDAP client commands installed before running these scripts"
I have installed the ldapscripts package along with all the required ones. Has anyone been through this, I imagine it's some little nuance that I am missing.

I currently have a VPS at burst.net. I'm trying to get a website setup, and I have my web server installed, but I have no idea how to get my domain name setup with it. Does anyone know of any documentation on how to setup nameservers with a VPS? I'm sure this is a really easy answer, I'm kind of a newbie to Linux.

I've got LAMP up and working and I'm currently hosting a joomla install on the server. I was wondering if there's an easy way to get a web proxy working on my site. I'd like to be able to use it just like you would at hidemyass.com. By simply supplying a url it'll provide the proxy services for me. I've looked through joomla's extensions library and don't see any extensions that'd provide that functionality. I was hoping that there'd just be some prepackaged web proxy application I could install.
Anyone out there know of any simple way of getting this up and running. I've looked at Squid but that looks like it's primarily a proxy server intended for internal network users. I didn't see any sort of web proxy feature to install on a web server there.

i followed this guide, [URL] a few days ago and set up an sftp server no problem. The user can only see what is in there home folder which is only the examples file which is empty. Today i went to set up a 2nd ftp account for my own private use. I have it set up and all, followed exactly what he said the 2nd time around and my 2nd user is not chroot'd. I can explor the contents of the whole drive.
My fist user that works fine is "ftpuser" and the group is "sftponly" just like in the guide. My 2nd user is named "ftptaylor". Now i did have an ftp server set up with vsftpd where i had the same ftpuser account in a different group, but it was jailed to /home/ftpuser. I cant tell you how i did it, i followed a number of guides untill one worked. But could it be that the guide above does not in face jail the users, but just that my user was already jail'd?

I have a server running ubuntu 8.10. I have monitoring software to monitor cerain devices on our LAN & WAN. However I need to set up e-mail on the server to mail me alerts for when something goes down. However this is where the problem comes in. I have never set up any mail clients on ubuntu server and am also not sure which one to use in this case. I have done some reading on squirrel mail and fetchmail. I am also aware there is roundcube and a few others available.
Here's my scenario: We have a mail server located off site. We use XP with Outlook on all our work machines. Outlook connects to the mail server using https with basic ntlm auth. So what I am trying to do is set up mail software to allow my server to send me an e-mail (using the above mail server) to my mail address so I get a mail whenever there's a problem with any of the devices being monitored.

I have a problem setting up Postfix on my home (behind Router/firewall) Ubuntu driven server, I have been trying for days now with no luck. All I would like to do is use the server to send mail (MTA). So while installing I configured it as a satellite system.
file:
/etc/postfix/main.cf
settings:
myhostname = mail.example.com
mydomain = example.com
alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases
[code]....
I'm getting a 553 From address not verified. I have tried what it suggested from the URL link, but it still doesn't work.

I just got unbuntu server edition installed on my server along with openssh-server. Now I am trying to set ssh so I can log in with a key authentication. I am using this guide to do it through putty on my windows machine. [URL]. After I installed ssh I logged in correctly. I then proceed to generate a key in putty. Now my problem starts when i try and put that key onto my server.
The tutorial says to type in
mkdir .ssh
My server says it cannot make that directive because it is already created. So I proceed to the next line. I believe this code sets permissions?
chmod 700 ~/.shh
Nothing happens just goes to a new line
Then I did this
cd .ssh
nano -w authorization_key
then I copied and pasted the key I got from putty gen into this file pressed ctrl o and then ctrl x
When I try logging into my server using the key auth it simply asks for my login, once it is input it says authorization invalid then ask for my password.

I am currently trying to setup a cluster using heartbeat. Unfortunatly it does not do what I want to do. I am using heartbeat 2.1.4-11 on a readhat system. I am using the the cib for configuration. What I want to do is the following: I have two Nodes. I want to run a clone resource on both nodes. It's named I want to run as a clone. This works fine.Additionally I want to have two virtual IP adresses. One should be set on Node 1 the other on Node 2. This works fine as well. I want to set dependencies between the resources. And this is where I have problems. What I want to achive: In case named is not able to run on a node, the vIP should switch to the other node (which then will have both vIPs). In case both nodes are able to run named, there should be one vIP on each node. Sounds simple, but does not work.Accourding to the heartbeat docu this an be achieved by using

I'm setting up a web server but I have no experience with RAID. I would like to try this configuration if possible:
2 x HDD 500GB RAID1
1 x HDD 20GB (logs and tmp)
The old 20GB drive I would like to use it to store logs and temporally files (mounted in /var/log and /tmp respectively). With this I'm trying to reduce some disk usage in the RAID drives. In my idea, it would be better to write the access/error logs of the web server in a separated drive to the one serving the files which may increase speed... sounds crazy?
One problem is that during the installation, If I set the RAID automatically it will try to use my 20GB HDD as well in the RAID... Does it will work if I set the RAID first (removing the 20GB HDD) and then set the mount points in it after the installation?

I have a 10.04 32-bit virtual ubuntu server. I am trying to figure out how to setup load balancing. Here is how I planned out to do it, I need direction for what software I should use.
--Internet(1.2.3.4)
--Router
---Load Balancing Server (192.168.1.30), port 80, public as in port forwarded Load balancer sends traffic to either web server
---Web Server 1 (192.168.1.100)
---Web Server 2 (192.168.1.101)
I heard I should use rsync to keep the files concurrent, at this point rsync is the least of my worries. I need to know what load balancer I should use I have tried and failed with crossroads(xr), and balance. I can't seem to find a modern tutorial for either system. I looked at linux virtual server but that is like 5 years ahead of my current knowledge.

I'm wanting to setup SFTP in a chroot, which is simply enough to do and I already have it working; however I also want it so that when they connect via SFTP it goes directly to their home directory. Currently I have the following in "/etc/ssh/sshd_config":
Code:
Subsystem sftp internal-sftp
Match Group sftp-users
ChrootDirectory /home
AllowTCPForwarding no
ForceCommand internal-sftp
Which works perfectly fine, however when they connect there are shown the contents of the "/home" directory which they then have to "cd username" to get to their home directory. This I do not like, and it confuses our clients who connect saying they can see "random folders that aren't mine", or some that think they've "hacked" the server. I really need it so upon connection they go to "username" directory. I can do this by using:
Code:
usermod -d /username username
Which changes the users home directory to "/username", and then upon connection it works just fine, they are taken directory to their home directory. However, I really really do not like the fact that "/etc/passwd" shows a different home directory to their real home directory, i.e it states "/username" when actually it is "/home/username".I've spent the entire day looking a different ways of doing it, and I can't come up with anything.
