Ubuntu Servers :: Setup Nameservers With A VPS?

Dec 20, 2010

I currently have a VPS at burst.net. I'm trying to get a website setup, and I have my web server installed, but I have no idea how to get my domain name setup with it. Does anyone know of any documentation on how to setup nameservers with a VPS? I'm sure this is a really easy answer, I'm kind of a newbie to Linux.

Fedora Networking :: How To Setup Nameservers

Jun 30, 2009

I finally get rid of all panel solutions on my server in order to install nginx. Everything is working correct with nginx. I defined my nameservers via my domain manager as

ns1.domain.tld ip1
ns2.domain.tld ip2

Now my question is how can i define these nameservers to my server via ssh and after defining nameservers do i have to do anything else ?

Ubuntu Servers :: Running Your Own Nameservers ?

Feb 11, 2010

I'm running my own webserver at home. I've also bought a domain (it's .nl because I'm Dutch). But now I need to change the nameservers from my domain.

I've read a lot of things about running your own authoritative nameserver and things like that. I also experimented with bind9 but I can't get it.

So, I've got a Webserver running Ubuntu Server. I've bought a domain. Nothing more and nothing less. So is it possible to run a nameserver or something else to get it work in this situation?

Ubuntu Servers :: Setup New Remote Office - Setup Domain Trust Between Two Sites?

Mar 14, 2010

I ended up setting up a basic linux file server as a pdc for that office. Our main office is a windows 2000 ads domain. The two offices are connected with a vpn. I only have two users at the new location so I simply have the linux and samba usernames/passwords setup manually. I would like to know if it is possible to setup a domain trust between the two sites so I don't have to create a username/password in the remote site for every user at the main office to access. I did some searching but came up empty.

Ubuntu Networking :: Randomly No Nameservers Defined On 3G Wireless

Jan 16, 2010

I have a Huawei E220 3G modem and I'm using Ubuntu 9.10. The modem picks up on USB, and the connection works, sort of. With random times, I can't get on the internet, and when running:

Code:

mtr -n -c3 -r 4.4.4.4

it tells me:

Quote:

Could not get fd's flags: Bad file descriptor
No nameservers defined

Network Manager Applet 0.7.996 is reporting my wireless connected, and applications like Skype is working perfectly. I just can't browse.

When I restart a couple of times, and my internet browsing capability starts working eventually at times. The behavior is very random. It appears that when I fiddle with USB devices, like unplugging my external hard drive, and plugging the USB modem in and out, restarting, it helps. Also, when plugging in my USB 3G modem, an icon pops up on the desktop, mounting the USB device as a USB flash drive. The device has on-board memory, but can I disable this / prevent it from mounting?I also disabled IPv6 by setting:

Code:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="ipv6.disable= 1 quiet splash"
in /etc/default/grub

What I also did was to "hard code" DNS by adding:

Code:

prepend domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220;
to /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Reach Nameservers Via Router

Feb 3, 2010

This has probably been beaten to death, but I can't find anything that fits my exact situation (maybe I'm using the wrong keywords, sorry).

Server:

eth0 - external NIC, DHCP IP from ISP
eth1 - internal NIC, static 192.168.0.1
DHCP running on eth1
IPTABLES set up to masquerade on eth0

I have a computer connected up via server's eth1. It's IP is 192.168.0.201 (/etc/init.d/networking restart) gives me a DHCPOFFER and everything, so DHCP seems to be working fine.

Server:

can access internet I can ssh into 192.168.0.201 (even though it seems to take longer than usual)

192.168.0.201:

can ping server (well duh, I ssh'ed in from the server) cannot access internet for DNS on the internal NAT I'm using the same DNS servers as the router, so the server's

resolv.conf:
nameserver 69.169.190.211
nameserver 208.72.160.67

Ubuntu Networking :: Change The Sequence Of The Nameservers Or Insert A New One & Again It Works For A Few Days?

Aug 5, 2011

I have configured opendns on my adsl router. So 192.168.1.1 was the first nameserver in Network Managerbut I often faced name resolution issues, so I configured 4.2.2.1 as the first nameserver, 4.2.2.2 as the second & 192.168.1.1 as the third.Problem is with the above configuration everything works well for a few days then again name resolution stalls. And again I change the sequence of the nameservers or insert a new one & again it works for a few days. I am tired of doing that again & again.

Ubuntu Servers :: Setup More Than 2 Sub Domains On 9.10?

Jan 29, 2010

I've built a web hosting server with ubuntu 9.10 desktop edition at home and it's up and running.how to get and set subdomains. What I mean is that I have a purchased domain [URL] and I want to add as many sub domains as I want such as [URL] so on. And more importantly every single subdomain must belong to each account.

sub domain account name
-------------------------------------------
sub1.example.com john
sub2.example.com steave
sub3.example.com myname

In this case, there are three accounts for ubuntu and each account has a permission to the corresponding sub domain only. p.s My DNS is managed by my domain company and it provides a web page where I can forward(not sure, but there are fields that I can type my sub domains) subdomains and my external IP addresss up to 20(just in case this info matters).

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Setup Web Proxy

Jan 16, 2011

I've got LAMP up and working and I'm currently hosting a joomla install on the server. I was wondering if there's an easy way to get a web proxy working on my site. I'd like to be able to use it just like you would at hidemyass.com. By simply supplying a url it'll provide the proxy services for me. I've looked through joomla's extensions library and don't see any extensions that'd provide that functionality. I was hoping that there'd just be some prepackaged web proxy application I could install.

Anyone out there know of any simple way of getting this up and running. I've looked at Squid but that looks like it's primarily a proxy server intended for internal network users. I didn't see any sort of web proxy feature to install on a web server there.

Networking :: BIND - Remove "Authoritative Nameservers" In UDP Message?

Jan 28, 2011

We have our Microsoft AD DNS servers replicating to our Sidewinder - which uses BIND for its DNS server. We ran into a situation where reverse lookup requests to the Sidewinder returned back a truncated UDP packet to the DNS client. When we added another DNS Microsoft Domain Controller, it added that name in the authoritative nameservers section of the UDP message which put it beyond the 512 byte limit. It was at about 500 bytes before we added the domain controller - then it moved to 529 which caused BIND to set the truncation flag bit in the UDP header causing the DNS client to come back in TCP mode to get the full message.

Microsoft DNS doesn't send back the "Authoritative nameservers" section in its UDP responses to reverse lookups - they probably learned that the hard way and took it out and only send back the Question and Answer section. Is there a way to modify BIND to not send the "Authoritative nameservers" section in its UDP responses and only the Question and Answer?

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Setup A 2nd Ftp Account For Own Private Use

I can explor the contents of the whole drive.

My fist user that works fine is "ftpuser" and the group is "sftponly" just like in the guide. My 2nd user is named "ftptaylor". Now i did have an ftp server set up with vsftpd where i had the same ftpuser account in a different group, but it was jailed to /home/ftpuser. I cant tell you how i did it, i followed a number of guides untill one worked. But could it be that the guide above does not in face jail the users, but just that my user was already jail'd?

Ubuntu Servers :: Setup E-mail To Alerts For When Something Goes Down

I have a server running ubuntu 8.10. I have monitoring software to monitor cerain devices on our LAN & WAN. However I need to set up e-mail on the server to mail me alerts for when something goes down. However this is where the problem comes in. I have never set up any mail clients on ubuntu server and am also not sure which one to use in this case. I have done some reading on squirrel mail and fetchmail. I am also aware there is roundcube and a few others available.

Here's my scenario: We have a mail server located off site. We use XP with Outlook on all our work machines. Outlook connects to the mail server using https with basic ntlm auth. So what I am trying to do is set up mail software to allow my server to send me an e-mail (using the above mail server) to my mail address so I get a mail whenever there's a problem with any of the devices being monitored.

Ubuntu Servers :: SSH Setup - Login With Key Authorization

Apr 5, 2010

I just got unbuntu server edition installed on my server along with openssh-server. Now I am trying to set ssh so I can log in with a key authentication. I am using this guide to do it through putty on my windows machine. [URL]. After I installed ssh I logged in correctly. I then proceed to generate a key in putty. Now my problem starts when i try and put that key onto my server.

The tutorial says to type in
mkdir .ssh

My server says it cannot make that directive because it is already created. So I proceed to the next line. I believe this code sets permissions?
chmod 700 ~/.shh
Nothing happens just goes to a new line

Then I did this
cd .ssh
nano -w authorization_key
then I copied and pasted the key I got from putty gen into this file pressed ctrl o and then ctrl x

When I try logging into my server using the key auth it simply asks for my login, once it is input it says authorization invalid then ask for my password.
