Ubuntu Servers :: Setting Up Office With 1 Server / 1 Remote / 1 Local Client
Sep 22, 2010
I have a fast computer in my office and I want the person using the slow computer in the same office to boot up and see the login window (gdm) and log-in from there into the fast computer and be able to use their session on the fast computer the same time I am locally logged in to the fast computer as a different user and session.Is this best done through XDMCP? Where is a good tutorial on how to set this up?

I am looking for a client/server application that can allow me to have remote GUI access (eg: VNC) but with the ability to use sound.
I see that TeamViewer has a linux application out now but for my company, it would compromise security protocol because it reaches out to the TeamViewer servers to do any work.
Basically, we have applications that require a GUI and we need to hear sounds from them if they throw an alert (the app is a monitoring tool).
We are running a VNC server on it currently and when our monitoring machine was on Windows, TightVNC was able to get the sound...that is not the case with any Linux client so I am wondering if there is actually one that exists.

Is there any software that will do full mirroring between a local and a remote file system. I have a server (9.04) and a laptop (9.10). Each user has shared a shared directory on the server, and on the laptop. Updates to files may be done on either system. I want to keep both copies syncronised. Currently I use a script based on rsync (scheduled by cron) to keep the local and remote copies in sync.
The problem with this approach is that rsync only seems to be able to handle deletion of files if one file system is the master, which is not the case in my set-up. If I move a file to a different directory, rsync will reinstate the old file as well as copying the new one. I was hoping there was some software that could do proper mirroring between the 2 systems, but6 so far I cannot find anything.

I'm trying to get a VB program to make a client connection to my PostgreSQL server running on an Ubuntu 10.10 server. Here's what I've done: Client side - installed and registered the OLE DB .dll's from the PostgreSQL OLE DB Provider project. server side - the configuration described here: [URL]... Have added this line to postgresql.conf:
listen_addresses = '*, 144.96.80.35, localhost'
I've also tried this as simply:
listen_addresses = '144.96.80.35, localhost'
also, port = 5432
I have added the following to pg_hba.conf:
# IPv4 local connections:

I ended up setting up a basic linux file server as a pdc for that office. Our main office is a windows 2000 ads domain. The two offices are connected with a vpn. I only have two users at the new location so I simply have the linux and samba usernames/passwords setup manually. I would like to know if it is possible to setup a domain trust between the two sites so I don't have to create a username/password in the remote site for every user at the main office to access. I did some searching but came up empty.

I have Fedora installed on a netbook. I customarily mount several NFS shares on this machine, from both a desktop system running F11 and a small server running FreeBSD. On the server side the shares are write-enabled. On the server side the shares are write-enabled. In the past this has worked fine.
However since upgrading to F12, my configuration no longer works as before. Reading from the NFS shares is no problem, but as soon as I try to write to one, either in Nautilus or from any other program, including on the cmd line, all hell breaks lose. Nautilus crashes, and I am unable to remount the shares. Usually rebooting the client is the my only recourse.
There are no clues in dmesg on either the client or the server. In terminal trying to remount a "trashed" share I see this:
Code:
$ sudo mount -v venus:/media/disk8 /media./disk8
mount: no type was given - I'll assume nfs because of the colon
mount.nfs: timeout set for Sat Feb 20 17:34:59 2010
mount.nfs: prog 100003, trying vers=3, prot=6
[Code].....
The NFS versions under F11, F12, and FreeBSD are the current ones (all updates applied).

The issue is that my CentOS workstation is in a vlan from where the Intranet's DNS servers are unreachable. For browsing the web there is an ISA proxy server, which I presume resolves DNS for my firefox. However, wget, host, ping and aria2c fail to get any sort of DNS resolution since they're being run from command line.I have exported HTTP_PROXY value, which provides me internet access on console, but,only when I connect using IP address. It fails on name resolution.
My question is:May I redirect the DNS queries to my home PC which would be running a DNS server on a non standard port?I was thinking of putting nameserver 127.0.0.1 in /etc/resolv.conf and then put iptables rule to redirect 127.0.0.1:53 UDP to a.public.ip.address:3535 UDP..I don't know if I am shooting blanks or what, I am not very much aware of this kind of setup.My main need is to provide DNS resolution to console apps.I want to utilize my company's idle bandwidth for bulk downloads, so, using proxy, SSH tunneling through my Home PC is out of question.

My desktop is running 'buntu 9.10 and I have recently aquired a couple of half decent servers running Windows server 2003. I have a few windows app's that I use regularly for work that I have had limited success in running with wine or in vm's. I stumbled upon a how to to call apps in a vm to run seamlessly on the host desktop and did some playing and have succeeded in calling app's on my servers from my 'buntu desktop, the command I have set in my launcher for one of them (DIALux)
My question is, can I change the default application/file association in 'buntu with a custom command so I can double click on a file and have it open in one of these remote app's??If I can, what is the correct custom command to be using as using the above doesn't work at all, it just tries to open the file with rdesktop not the remote app.

I have a remote drive mounted on my system(ubuntu 10.04 x64), and i have the contents of that drive backed up to dropbox. the problem is, if i unmount the drive, the files disappear from dropbox. is there a way to mirror the contents of the network drive to a localfolder(preferably in such a way that all changes and file deletions are changed on the local folder instantly, but unmounting doesn't delete it all)? It looks like rsync would work, but im not sure how to make it work.

As many developers probably do, I have a Windows based machine on which I run XAMPP locally to test my code and a Linux machine with Fedora as my remote server.As I sometimes use .htaccess as a way to authenticate some parts of the website, I end up having two .htaccess files: one with the local path (something line D:My_Webs) and one with my remote path (something like /var/www/html/) to the password file.I have searched high and low, but I cannot seem to find any trick so that I only have to maintain one version of the .htaccess file which can work on both Linux and on Windows machines.

I have been messing around with freenx to see if I can support my customer via remote desktop... I have installed the server on Ubuntu Karmic and the client on Windows 7. I love linux but need the windows computer for customer work and that is why I chose to install the client on windows. I setup the server the best I could and created custom keys which I then copied to windows and imported them to the freenx client. I am looking for security for my customer and that is why I chose custom keys... There are several issues to deal with but I want to just get started to see where it takes me. I added the test server computers ip address to the freenx client configuration and tried to connect to Ubuntu... I have left the port as 22 at the moment
Desktop setting on the client...I chose vnc which seems to be a good choice according to all the material I have been reading....Other settings I have left alone at the moment to see how things work.... All that said - I have the login window asking for information... I have the password asking for information....and I have the session wanting information....? Obviously I understand that login info can be set on the server and the password...but I haven't seen how to set up that? Of course I am testing the server from a client on my home network at the moment - but the customer has his own router as do I so those settings will need to be looked at as well.

I currently have 4 Linux Servers installed in a test lab that I have built for my job. I am in the process of trying to get FTP to work (vsftpd is installed). I don't need an FTP GUI or anything, I can use terminal (and I don't have an internet connection, so I probably can't get one anyway). I bring up the terminal and I type FTP and I am presented with a few problems:
1. If I try to FTP to one of the other Linux Servers on the network, I get "No route to host" error.
2. If I try to FTP to the Server I am sitting on, then I am able to successfully connect, obviously. But when I do an "ls," I don't see any available files.
I am assuming this is because I have not yet set up a folder for it (i.e. Windows uses "ftproot" folder). I am running Ubuntu Gnome 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope for a GUI, and I am running Ubuntu Server underneath (Yes I need a GUI for what I am using the server for).

I've been doing XHTML/CSS for the past several weeks, and started learning PHP last week (all on windows). Learned how to set up IIS server, mysql and php to be able to do all the work locally. Now, I've got Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop and want to continue working with the book I have on it, so I can do some of the work when I'm away from home as well. Questions I have are:
1. How to set a server up?
2. SQL? (mysql?)
3. php? How do I check if I already have any of those installed on my system, and if not how to set them up?
4. where would the root system be for the server if I have it, or if not, where will it be?
5. do I refer to it as "localhost" here aswell i.e. [URL]

I have a problem while copying files from a remote computer to my local one using the scp command. I am sure that I am using it correctly, please check it below:
---
blah@blah.com:~/g4work> scp blah2@blah2.com:IndirectMethod_Spher...s/H_1.mac.root .
---
What I get in return (instead of the statement saying 100% of file copied) is:
---
On this machine the G4SYSTEM=Linux-g++
---
The interesting point is that the above returned statement is one of the Environment variables set on both the machines that are necessary to work with a toolkit called Geant4. Here is what I get when I type 'printenv | grep G4' just to show you (note the statement in bold):
---
G4LEVELGAMMADATA=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/data/PhotonEvaporation2.0
G4INSTALL=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02
G4LEDATA=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/data/G4EMLOW6.9

G4REALSURFACEDATA=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/data/RealSurface1.0
G4SYSTEM=Linux-g++
G4WORKDIR=/home/blah/g4work
---
The other thing that I would like to mention is that these Geant4 Env. Variables are loaded each time a new (bash) shell is started as a result of the bash login script.

I would like to experiment a "green" idea of virtual desktop where multiple users are served by a single powerful machine.
I have a server running 24/7. The monitor of this machine is turned off most of the time and the OS is on the login screen.
Other users, in the same local network, use less powerful machines, which could be a thin client or an old Pentium 3 machine. They access their accounts remotely and work with the GUI as if they were sitting in front of the server. Each user sees their own desktop (different themes, screen resolution, etc.). And of course it can happen that several users could log in at the same time.
The usage is modest: mostly web browsing and the usual default applications (office, wine, gimp, etc.). In particular no games or any demanding applications. The users want to use their desktop in graphical mode only.
Question: How do we call this way of using a server? Is it possible with Ubuntu? And how to implement it?

I've just set up the local mirror for my 96 CentOS 5 workstations. The mirroring script is taken from public-mirror howto and looks like this:
#!/bin/sh
rsync="/usr/bin/rsync -avHzL --delete --delay-updates" # replaced -q with -v for debuging purposes, removed --bwlimit, added -L to follow symlinks
mirror=centos.politechnika.lublin.pl::CentOS # tried several different same result
[Code]....
I tested mirror consistency by putting the mirror addres I'm syncing with, directly into repo file. Than yumex works fine. I tried several different mirrors with the same result.

I have a need to set up the program TNG - The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding and run it on a local server (not on the Internet) for the purpose of learning the system prior to developing it on an actual website. I was told to use http://localhost on my browser (Mozilla Firefox). I get a message saying "That Works!", but it goes on to say that the contents of the web server have not yet been entered. The instructions for the downloaded files (which I unzipped) said to copy to the web root folder (the folder where the web server is located ?, I guess). But I don't know where it is or how to go about it. Can someone help? I already have MySQL and PHP, which are required to run this program, and I also have Apache installed on my Kubuntu 9.10 system.
