Ubuntu Servers :: SSH Freezing After Kernel Update ?

Dec 15, 2010

I updated the kernel on a ubuntu machine yesterday. No problems so far. But after rebooting I couldn't login via SSH anymore. The session freezes right after authentication. Doesn't matter wether its pubkey or keyboard-interactive.

I couldn't find any hints so far. auth.log does not seem to show any warnings/errors.

Strange thing is: I'm able to log in via SFTP (SCP). I can even use WinSCP to open a "unix like" shell, but it only works for basic commands.

Here is the output of auth.log, when logging in via SFTP/SCP

Code:

This is the output when trying to open a real ssh session:

Code:

Ubuntu Servers :: Kernel Update - Machine Not Shown On Network

Aug 15, 2010

Today when I logged into my fileserver it told me there were 20 updates available. I went ahead and installed them, one was a new kernel. After reboot, I cannot see that machine when I browse the network. It still has the same static IP and I can still map to the shared drives, so Samba is working. When I browse the network from Windows or my WDTV Live media play it no longer shows the server by name. The smb.conf file is still intact and I restarted Samba. Not really sure where to start troubleshooting why I can't browse to it.

Debian :: Kernel 2.6.26.1 Freezing ?

Jun 4, 2010

I have big problem with my network router with linux freezing.

Motherboard: Intel S5520HC
CPU: 2x Intel Xeon E5520 2.27GHz

router:~# cat /proc/version Linux version 2.6.26.1 (root@debian) (gcc version 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-21)) #1 SMP Fri Oct 10 03:51:09 CEST 2008

Avarage utilization only 2-4%. Router performing routing, DHCP server, NAT and shaping for 1000 IP addresses (avg. bandwidth 100Mbps)

This PC freezing once every 2-3 days.

Nothing special in remote syslog but I have bad feelings that the router's time stops before freeze. With cron I ssh (3 times) to router every whole minute and syslog before freeze looks like this:

And freeze. Falling to silicon heaven.

OpenSUSE :: Freezing 11.3 -kernel 2.6.34.4-0.1-default I686

Sep 15, 2010

I have Opensuse 11.3 with kernel 2.6.34.4-0.1-default i686 and use KDE4-4.5.1 from the new OpenSuse repo. My system sometimes freezes while using Firefox or Chrome and also sometimes playing with Kpatience or browsing images with Gwenview.

My video card is an old Sapphire Radeon working with radeon module and desktop effects are off. The only way to bring up the system is hard resetting. I tried also the desktop kernel with no difference.

OpenSUSE Install :: Freezing After Loading Kernel

Feb 15, 2010

Trying to install Opensuse 11.2 (64bit) on a new machine isn't working well. After loading the linux kernel, the green screen with the progress bar appears, and the mouse and keyboard turn off (at least, the leds go out and there's no response) The progress bar never moves. Esc key doesn't work either. I've tried safe mode install and other options, but the same result follows.

It's going onto a Tyan S2912 with AMD 2347HE. The hard drive is a Western Digital SATA drive I bought today. There's 4GB of RAM, and the DVD drive is a Toshiba USB unit. I don't know what else to say about it. If it helps, I've been running Pelican HPC (live) without a hard-drive andgot tired of setting the network configuration and installing a ouple of programs with every boot. (Which is why I bought the hard drive today). I want to install Opensuse 11.2, but I've tried Debian (no luck on detecting the hard-drive) and Windows 7 (installed fine, but there are no drivers for the embedded video).

OpenSUSE Install :: System Freezing With Kernel 2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop

Jan 28, 2010

After migrating from openSUSE-11.1 to openSUSE-11.2 together with a few further online updates including a kernel upgrade to 2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop, my system started freezing a couple of times for two days.

I made up my mind googling for "linux freeze", found a hint saying, that 2.6.31.8 causes trouble, fell back to 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop, and voila: the problem is gone. What a relief!

The following describes my system:

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 - Freezing While Booting And Reports Kernel Bug

Feb 5, 2011

We have just installed the 11.3 version of opensuse in a Dell Poweredge T610 with 8 Gb in RAM and two (2) Xeon Quadcore proccesors. Well, the first time the Opensuse resets the computer, after the installation (it was fine, w/o any problem) the system goes frezze showing a screen which reports a BUG ERROR in the Kernel code, specifically:

Kernel bug at /usr/package/BUILD/kernel-desktop-2.6.34/kernel/timer.c:643
invalid opcode: 0000 [#1] PREEMPT SMP
last sysfs file: /sys/module/thermal_sys/sections/__ksymtab_strings
CPU 11
...
...

After a "button off" reset the machine boots fine and we could finish the configuration of the applications that we needed. We tested the machine by two days and it didn't show again the problem mentioned, and we believe it was a little bug in the installation, but today, the server halts again in the boot process 3 (three) times before it runs again well.We have repeated this installation in other computers, one in a 32 bit version and other in 64 bits version (like the Dell) and only in the last one has repeated the problem, I mean, no problems in the 32 bit installation. Fortunately, this new server is just a replacement for an old machine, that is running with the 10.3 version. Perhaps, does we continue using the 10.3 instead of the 11.3 meanwhile it is deputed?

Ubuntu Servers :: Random Freezing On NIS/NFS Client Machines?

Aug 25, 2011

We administer a small lab of Ubuntu 11.04 machines. Users authenticate via NIS to the fileserver, which then uses NFS to mount their /home directory.

From time to time, seemingly at random, the machines will lock up. After about 15 minutes, they will go back to normal.

Switching the machine to the console with/ Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't help either - credentials get entered, but there's still a 15 minute wait before any commands can be entered. Some error messages show up at this point about processes that were running timing out. However, the root user can log in immediately (which makes us think that this is only affecting NIS accounts).

Logging in with the root account, we can ping our NIS server, and it responds normally. We can restart the networking and NIS daemons but neither of these help.

We checked the NIS error log in /var/yp/ypserv.log and it is empty.

We used to be running a different version of Ubuntu on the client machines (10.04 LTS), but not on the server.

Ubuntu Servers :: Freezing When Running A Script On A Remote Server

Mar 1, 2011

I discovered in running a script on a remote server. Take this little demonstration script:

[Code]...

This runs as expected (it does nothing) on both my local desktop and the remote server. However if I log in via ssh to the remote server and run this script everything on the server freezes. I do mean everything ftp/ssh/nfs/login-requests/... even if I go and physically plug in monitor and keyboard there is no response. It basically needs a full restart to clear. I have repeated this several times. Now something is clearly wrong here but does anyone know what. I didn't think a non-admin user should be able to actually lock up system processes.

9.04 this morning updated my kernel to I believe it is 2.6.28.18 and upon the reboot I had no desktop. It booted wanting to go into low graphics.

So I drop to shell and stop the gdm and try to run the latest nvidia run file I have and it hangs saying I have a x server running.

Otherwise I am needing assistance with getting my desktop back! I can boot into an older kernel and if need be I would like to roll back that latest update this morning, but once again I am forgetting the command line for that.

Red Hat :: RHEL4 Strange Kernel Panic On Boot - Kernel Update No Solution

Dec 31, 2008

I have the following strange thing with a RHEL4 installation. Since last week, the system did a reboot and now something is really fucked up. During boot we get the following messages (don't care about 'strange' typo's, my colleague typed it 'blind' from the screen)

Code:

The strange thing is that we never see a 'could not mount blabla' or similar messages. First we thought it was a failing kernel update by plesk, but even after manually updating the kernel with RHN RPM's, still the same message. Booting with rescue mode and then chroot the system works. After that we even can start things like plesk and so on.

We double checked things with another RHEL4 install, and at least two things were odd:

1: the working machine has /dev/dm-0 and /dev/dm-1, the broken one doesn't

2: some files on /dev didn't have group root, but 252

We tried to recreate the /dev/dm-X nodes with [vgmknodes -v], output:

Code:

A fdisk /dev/sda shows: /dev/sda2 XX XXX XXXXX Linux LVM (I removed the numbers because this line is from another machine, but rest was identical)

We have a copy of the boot partition so if one need more info please let me know.

Ubuntu Installation :: Fetching From Update Servers Fail When When Using Update Managers?

Aug 21, 2010

I have Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit installed. Update manager tells me there are updates available, but when i try to install them, downloading the updates fail and throws this error:

Code:

Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/e/eglibc/libc6-i386_2.10.1-0ubuntu16_amd64.deb

Consequently, a similar error occurs when I try installing Sun Java 6 Runtime.

Code:

Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/s/sun-java6/sun-java6-jre_6-15-1_all.deb Connection failed [IP: 91.189.88.31 80]

Ubuntu Restricted Extras stalls when it's time to download the Java package I tried synaptic, update manager, aptitude, apt-get, and they all throw similar errors. Then I also tried connecting to different servers, to no avail. So to check if it's my connection to the net that has problems somehow, I tried downloading the file directly through my web browser, and it works. (But it's not recommended, and it won't let me!, install the updates manually, right?) I tried searching for the errors on the net and in the forums, and they're all somehow related to proxy servers. I then checked if I'm using some inappropriate proxy settings, and everywhere it's all set up to connect to the net directly, which is, well, my setup.

Take note though, that I am able to install other softwares normally, i.e, using synaptic, apt-get etc. The ones I tried include Pidgin and Mplayer. It's just these updates and Java:

Code:

jeanne@jeanne-desktop:~$ sudo sudo aptitude upgrade
W: The "upgrade" command is deprecated; use "safe-upgrade" instead.

OpenSUSE Network :: Not Able To Connect To Update Servers And Some Servers On The Web

The other problem is that some servers on the web won't load for me either.

For example, I get most of my local news from The Toronto Star, and I can't connect to it's website at all.

I can from Windows (I dual boot) but not SUSE. I don't think its a problem limited to that one website either. I am able to connect to most websites though.

Ubuntu :: Update The Kernel Of 9.10 To That Of 10.04?

Aug 25, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 9.10. I use a Huawei EC1260 modem, which fails to work (but can be made to work by typing some commands). The current version of kernel on 9.10 is 2.6.31-14-generic. An upgrade to 2.6.31-22-generic worsened the matter and even broke the workarounds that I used for the modem.

I want to upgrade to the kernel to that of 10.04 to resolve this (I will not upgrade to Lucid as there the experience is painful - it hangs most of the time and I do not have time to fix things). Or, maybe, a downgrade to 2.6.28-11 (the kernel of Jaunty)?

How will I do this? Is there any adverse effect that may occur due to the update?
