Ubuntu Servers :: Can Server Alongside Current Windows Server Without Bring Everything To Screeching Halt?

In trying to help our office modernize its IT infrastructure, one of the key components is maintaing our server. We have around 50-60 people who need access to a local server primarily for secure general file storage. These employees are geographically dispersed. We currently use some(?) version of Windows Server which is maintained and updated by a IT company we keep on retainer. After doing some very basic research on Ubuntu Server, I would like to try and incorporate a pilot program utilizing the Ubuntu Server software.I was successful in installing Ubuntu Server on an unused PC that I put a clean hard drive in. I have been following the direction of the Official Ubuntu Server manual to assist in the server setup, and this has progressed my cause up to a point.
Can I run an Ubuntu Server alongside our current Windows server without bring everything to a screeching halt? Additionally, I am the only mac computer in an office filled with varying version of windows. I have begun to configure samba but need some direction from the community as to updating the workgroup so my mac can connect to the Ubuntu Server. What do I need to put in the workgroup part of the /etc/samba/smb.conf directory?I have no doubt there will be face palms by the community after reading this thread, but I am trying my best to teach myself the Ubuntu way.

I am having a strange problem I've never encountered before. I have an Asus Eee S101 10.1" netbook with the 32GB SSD. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition.
The other day, I was browsing with Firefox, when suddenly the entire computer came screeching to a halt. Had to power it down with the power button. After this happened, I have been unable to use the same Firefox profile I had been using. I had to start Firefox from the command line with the -ProfileManager switch, then create a new profile to keep browsing.
I wanted to completely get rid of the old profile, so from the Profile Manager I tried to delete the old one. Computer hung, had to reboot with the power switch. I then tried to browse to the .mozilla/firefox directory and delete the profile's directory there, from both Nautilus and the command line. Both times, the computer froze.
I tried a few more times, and the couple of times the computer didn't freeze, I got an error from the command line saying a Bash input/output error. After this error appeared, it would appear no matter what command I ran - I couldn't even run a sudo reboot now.
I can create/delete other files and directories, just not that Firefox profile.

I have Ubuntu Server 10.04 Lucid (LTS) installed on my server (EC2 instance). I'd like to install Memcached on it. When I type "sudo apt-get install memcached" I get version 1.4.2-1ubuntu3 installed.
I know there's a newer version 1.4.5 and looking at [URL]..I found it's available in the newer version of Ubuntu (Maverick). Question: is it possible to get the newer version 1.4.5 using apt-get on my current server?

We have a server running CentOS 5 Linux 2.6.18-128.1.16.el5xen #1 SMP Tue Jun 30 06:39:23 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU Linux. We've seen at random times that the server will just reboot and nothing is logged in messages. I tried to enable kdump but was only able to get a 5.4 gig dump since our /var directory is set to 10GB. Here is the messages I see before and after the server restart. I had thought that when a kernel panics, it is supposed to halt the system and not reboot it. My /proc/sys/kernel/panic is set to 0. I can run an update but want to have some sort of idea what is causing the issue and if the update will fix anything.

I'm curious if anybody can shed some light for me in this department. We're in a large environment with a Windows DHCP Server. We have been tinkering with LTSP on Edubuntu as thin and fat clients. It works great, but right now we just have 1 server handling the lab, which works fine unless we want to expand, which may be very possible.
These are the instructions I received:
Login to your windows server and load the DHCP configuration screen
Create a DHCP reservation for the MAC address you obtained
Add the configuration options below to enable the machine to boot from the LTSP server
017 Root Path: /opt/ltsp/i386
066 Boot Server Host Name: <ip address>
067 Bootfile Name: ltsp/arch/pxelinux.0 # Specify CPU architecture in place of 'arch', for instance 'i386'

I'm curious, what if I want to have multiple Ubuntu servers on the network that I want to have bootable? For example, let's say I have 3 labs, and 3 servers. Server A to Lab A, Server B to Lab B, and Server C to Lab C. I want all C's computers to boot to C, and B to B, A to A, etc.
1 - How would I add multiple entries on the Windows DHCP Server to allow all 3 (A B C) servers to boot?
2 - How would I be able to isolate the clients so ONLY Lab A clients boot to Server A, etc?

Let's say I have a program open on another virtual desktop. Is there a way I can bring that program to the current desktop through a script? The following command is the closest I can get:
wmctrl -a program This will switch to the desktop where the program is open and make it the foremost window. However, instead of going to the desktop where the program is, I want to bring the program to the current desktop. There is also this command:
wmctrl -R program The documentation says that this will do what I want, but it just does the same thing as the former command.

I'm running the current release of Debian with the 2.6.26-2 kernel. This is an upgrade from an older (2.4 kernel) series redhat release. One of the things I had working in the older system was a dns server with accompanying monthly update of the root hints file. I tried working through a dns how-to to set this up again, but it seems much has moved around since I last played with this. All of the files listed in the how-to are not where it says they should be. I am looking for a better reference on keeping the dns server running with current server information.

I have a raid 5 array that appears to have died. I was just routinely looking at /var/log/messages and noticed that a drive in the array was complaining (via SMARTD).
This is the /home directory, and so is backed up, so it's not critical, but I'd like to get some things that changed after the last backup (the week before I noticed the failure)
Let me start by outlining what I know :
It's a 2TB array spread over three disks (mdadm software RAID5), here are the drives:
MDADM gives the drives :
Now, the array *WAS* up ok, but I umounted it. (in which /dev/md0 was mounted to /home) Yes,I know - I didn't want any changes being made to the array by anything - at least that was my thinking at the time. In hindsight... I would have killed any processes, locked out the server, backed up again and 'then' unmounted it.
But we are where we are, I'm sure there'll be time for recriminations later.
When I try to remount it, I get :
Ok - looks like it's lost the type - it's normally worked, maybe we'll give it a little hint - it's ext3 with a journal.
When I tell it it's an ext3, I get :
Now, before I go charging off specifying superblocks further along the disk, but I can't remember where they're stored.
Neither can I recall what the blocksize I originally created the array as (I have a feeling I specifed 4K, but I could be wrong).
debugfs is only telling me :
I should also point out that this server is hosted, so it's 150 miles away from me at the moment, so I can't just whip them out and dd a copy.

I'm working for a smallish non-profit that has gone through some recent growing pains. We have two sites that are currently without a domain controller, and no money for MS licenses, so I was thinking of trying to add a couple of additional Linux machines (we already run Linux for web services internally, and I've set up a test case previously to see if I could get a server to join the domain, which was a success) and was trying to find out if I can get them to act as Domain Controllers without replacing the domain. The main issue that I'm having at those locations is drive mappings are not happening correctly against our DFS file servers. The one other location that had this issue had it go away when we added a local DC. The domain is a Server 2008 domain.

I am sure there is a nice guide out there somewhere but I cannot find it. My question is: The company I work for has a fully windows environment, servers and clients. The current server is on a Windows 2000 Server and I plan on replacing that. I wish to use Ubuntu server with Joomla for this purpose. This is my first venture into a purely command line interface, although I have played around with Ubuntu desktop in the past. My first question right now is: How do I log onto the Windows Network (active directory) from the ubuntu server. eth0 is reporting a valid internal IP on the network, so its been picked up okay.
Edit: I also want to assign a static internal IP address instead of grabbing from the DHCP. Edit2: Thinking about it, as the ubuntu server and windows server can ping each other do I even need to log into the domain? The server will only be serving web pages.

I can't seem to connect to it when using windows 7. Both are in the same workgroup (W0RKGR0UP) and I have set DHCP address for the ubuntu box. Is there any other thing that I would still need to edit ? My router address is 192.168.0.1 and the fixed ip for ubuntu box is 192.168.0.103.

We have about four workstations and a server. What we need is authenticating with the server, and when you log on, you should see your own desktip and documents idnependent on which workstation you use. Could this be solved by placing the user's home on a server share?We also need a server share accessible from both Linux, Windows an Mac, readable and writeable, as some prefers to bring their laptops to the office.I've read a little bit about terminal servers, but using the workstations as thin clients sounds like a waste, as they're just as powerful as the server. i manged to get a samba server up and running to share with my windows machines. But i still want more. My main goal is to be able to share my movies. I have a laptop hooked to my flat screen with 3TB's of external drives, thats whats acting as my server. I have ubuntu desktop installed because i use it to play movies also.
I'm looking to set up something that is a little faster than samba (yes i no trying to share through USB 2.0 external drives and a wifi connection isn't going to be real fast no matter what) but i want to be able to access my server remotely. like maybe FTP? but what i'm asking here is what protocol should i use and what programs? i was thinking gadmin-proftpd and then filezilla to access?

I'm trying to load a HP Proliant w/ Fedora 11 and setting up as a WFS using Samba. However, I'm a bit confused on how to do it. Right now I have 2 36.4GB drives in RAID 1+0 and 4 146.8GB drives in a RAID 5 config. I wanna use the smaller drive for the OS and the bigger drive for the storage. I've managed to load the OS fine, the problem is I can't figure out how to mount the 4 146.8GB drives as a single logical volume and set Samba to use it. Right now all the RAIDs are setup using the built-in Compaq Smart Array utility (or whatever it's called) that's built into the SCSI hardware or BIOS.

if i try to connect to my samba server ( share ) from my windows xp ( or vista, i've tried both ) it says, that the network share cannot be found. i've installed all necessary rpms on my fedora 10, necessary for running a samba server:

I have samba server(Fedora 11) here,but when I want to access to it from WindowXP ,the first time you need to tap in user name and password.But the next time ,you automatically log in Samba server with the user name as the first time you used. But I have not clicked the "Remeber me " option when I logged in.I want to switch user when I want to log in samba,does anybody know what is wrong ?

We have a small group of linux servers, currently with local logins. I want to eliminate the local logins and authenticate against the corporate AD. I've been looking at PAM - but winbind requires each machine to be added to the AD. This becomes a pain if we create new virtual or physical servers. Is it possible to have one server authenticate directly with AD, and the other servers authenticate against this server, which defers to the one server that is registered in AD?
