I am running 8.04 Server on a VPS. I have installed Citadel. I also have some web pages that use sendmail for contacts.I see my mail.info logging a lot of the following entries.
Code:

I am looking to use Citadel in my machine, some questions come to mind before I install it again on my new server.
Can this tool support phpBB sending mail for activations etc?
Can I use CLI mail commands?
I have noted it can support a vast number of domains.

I'd like to setup an Ubuntu LAMP server, and provide limited access to it for our in-house web developers/designers. I'm not quite sure how to go about the permissions side of things. Which user/group should "own" the /var/www directory? Is it www-data?
How do I create user accounts (for our developers) that have access to the /var/www directory - do I create accounts then add them to the www-data group? Or should I make a special 'webdev' group and give it access somehow?

So i have a fresh install of the server edition of Karmic, i'm running the Xfce desktop. When I attempt to manage users and groups through the GUI, I am prompted for what I think is the root password, the reason I say this is because the account I am currently logged in has sudo privileges and it does not accept that password at all, but I read that by default the root account is 'locked,' (to be honest it was so long ago since I last installed Ubuntu I completely forgot if it is or isn't, my current desktop installation has su access) is it asking for the root password? why doesn't my current user account password work if the root account is 'locked'? I can perform all other administrative tasks with sudo no problem.
the funny thing is, I have the exact same setup in a virtual machine, the same problem happens, except for some strange reason after changing the password on the only account (besides root), the password required to administer users and groups stayed the same after the change. (at the time of installation I just put both the user and root password the same and now that it is setup), i'm now ready to change the passwords. except now I read that the root account is locked by default, but this strange problem occurs.

I have an issue in Gmail that has just started recently. When I'm logged into Gmail I sometimes have as many as 22-28 outbound connections and my NIC never stops sending and receiving data. When I log into Gmail this starts and doesn't stop even if I log out and close the tab. I have to quit the browser to lose the connections.
I had a thread URL... that initially was about this issue but I didn't know it seemed to be totally Gmail related so I thought I might ask this way. It could be Google just changed something on their end but I don't want to run my mail until I know it's ok.

I set up a servber on my local machine, & also PHp - Both working fine.I'm trying to load up MYSQL i have installed it, & *can* start/stop the server. however if I do anything else with it, I get this error :-
Quote:
root@gordon-desktop:~# sudo mysqladmin -u root -h localhost password MYPASSWORD
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'
Query :-
1) How do I know MYSQL is actually active ? (apart from the message it says that its statrted (or stopped).
2) Is there a way to
a) Find out the usernames that are recorded on the MYSQL server ?
b) set / RESET the 'root' username (I know MYSQL root user is different to PC root user)
c) anything else I can do on the PHP / website code to see if MYSQL is working
(as yet, no tables / databases etc have been set up - as I can't get past this error message - I get the same error when setting up a database.)
Ps I did allow my usermname (when logged in to ubuntu) to edit / create files in the /usr/www/ directory (but it is still OWNED by 'root' - that directory)

If I want to add Windows & Mac users as Samba users, must I first add them all as Ubuntu users? If so, since none of the other users will actually be working on the Ubuntu Server, how do I disable the other non-admin users on the Ubuntu Server login screen. I am using Webmin to administer some server settings, and command line for others.

I downloaded the lastest x86 stable release of openfiler and installed it on VBOX durring the install I selected to manually do the partitions and added a
/boot
swap (x2 ram)
/
Partition scheme. I selected DHCP client on the network configuration. Now from what I understand once I have done that I should be able to point my browser to https:<IP>:446 and login as root and configure everything within the GUI. But when I log in there is nothing to configure. My host system is Ubuntu x86_64 4GB Ram amd dual core processor.

I have a problem with a PHP/Apache program.
The website creates a RPG character through a traditional Wizard. It calls itself with a hidden variable being the page number and tests which page and returns the page data with the page incremented.
Each page should be treated as a seperate page and so would be unique. I am echoing the contents of POST to the top of the page and so I can see variables being returned. When I get data from an Ajax query from page three it saves the data (23 post fields of no more than 25 characters for each field). Page four does the same but with less fields - but it is NOT returning the data - only four fields being those that were originally posted.
I cut/paste the function from section three to section four and changed the displayed text and the names of variables to test so there are no code errors, since page three works and is saved to a database.
So the only option is that there is a PHP or Apache2 issue when POST variables are returned? I am completely out of ideas as to why this would even be an issue or how it could possibly appear.
Is the number of variables an issue? This page is less than the previous page.... And the form is POSTed...
PS: I am getting NOTICE errors from PHP being the POSTed variables that are not displayed/returned... I used:
error_reporting (E_ALL ^ E_NOTICE);
to stop these form being reported but do I need to test each one? PPS: Using If Isset($_POST['xxx']) does NOT allow that variable through...
PS: I have the default Ubuntu 10.04 Apache2 with all the ubuntu 10.04 updates...

I recently installed vsftpd on my server. I noticed that users on the machine can login into vsftpd with their username and password on the machine and go to their root dir "/home/username".Now, I want to give some people a vsftpd username and password so they can upload and download files and folders to their folder, but this folder has to be in the "/var/www/(username)" folder. I don't want them to be able to go to any other folder than their own folder like "/var", "/etc" or "/home" etc. Also I don't want them to be able to login on the machine as a user, through putty for example. They should only be allowed to acces their folder with vsftpd, nothing else.

I just rented a godaddy dedicated, the ubuntu variety comes loaded with 8.04...(& I need PHP 5.3)Followed the directions here: URL...I did have to change my sources.list, everything after that went as expected (not like i'd know what to expect)At one point it asked if I wanted to update my grub/menu.lst to the release version, or use my old one, I updated it.Once the upgrade completed, I checked the menu.lst again to ensure it was gonna boot 10.04 (as warned by the guide)However once I sent reboot, I couldn't SSH back in, I waited 5m, 15m, tried again, still couldn't SSH then I had the server power cycled via my godaddy control panel, and still nothing, attempts on port 22 timed out & other ports were refused.
I think I overlooked something because, from what I've read here and there this is technically possible, I also just found this guide here:URL...The first user comment (above link/guide) seems to have a tip for what I'm trying.Anyways had the server re-provisioned via my control panel & I'm about to try again, only this time. uh, check the SSH settings post upgrade/pre restart?

I ended up setting up a basic linux file server as a pdc for that office. Our main office is a windows 2000 ads domain. The two offices are connected with a vpn. I only have two users at the new location so I simply have the linux and samba usernames/passwords setup manually. I would like to know if it is possible to setup a domain trust between the two sites so I don't have to create a username/password in the remote site for every user at the main office to access. I did some searching but came up empty.

I am running an installation of Scientific Linux 6.0 (it is literally RHEL 6 minus the brand), and have successfully setup Citadel Groupware, and synced it with a Mozilla Thunderbird client with the Lightning calendar extension. It is very nice!
However, for the Citadel server to sync with my iPhone, I need to, and have have downloaded and successfully started the latest Groupware Sync Server from here. The Groupware Sync Server is basically an installation of Funambol, specially made to work with Citadel.
I tried to connect to the server from my iPhone with the Funambol connector app, and the Synthesis SyncML app, but none of them worked when I pointed them to: http://[hostname]:8080/funambol/ds (which is what the Groupware Sync Server documentation told me). Of course, I replaced [hostname] with my actual hostname.
I checked the logs of both sync apps, and they both say the following:
Quote:
[ERROR] processItemStatus: server sent status 506 in SYNC
[ERROR] Error #506 in source addressbook
On the Citadel and Groupware Sync Server forums, I was told that error 506 meant its something on the server going on, so I got the two relevant log files, /opt/Funambol/logs/ds-server/ds-server.log, and /opt/tools/tomcat/logs/catalina.out (the links point to pastebins of the output).
What does "error 506" mean, and how do I correct it?
BTW, I disabled my entire firewall just in case that was the issue.

I'm running 10.10 64-bit and have configured it for root graphical login for administration of the system. When I log in as root, I can run all menu items in System -> Administration with the exception of Users and Groups. When I try running this, the application starts, but I only get an animated spinning disk that doesn't stop, can't modify the users properties and I can't close the application unless I go to System -> Administration -> System Monitor -> Processes tab , highlight users-admin and click End Process.

I wonder if other people have this problem. sometimes I need to duplicate most or all of a server from one machine to another. part where I most tend to have issues is with recreating the users. Sometimes the UIDs don't match up because of differences between the two systems, which gives funky results, like files owned by the wrong user.
Or, sometimes, I just need to create the same 10 users on x number of machines, and it's tedious to do this 10x times. Plus, then, if you need to change a password or delete a user, you have to do it x times.Any recommendations on how to centralize users/auth?

I have an Openldap server and many 9.10 servers using it to check for possible ssh users. No problems there. Just brought up my first 10.04 server and went through the same procedure to allow ldap users to ssh in, works great. The problem is that ldap users cannot su to root on the 10.04 server. Only locally defined users can su to root, though they cannot su to ldap users. The local root user can su to anyone. Quick overview of how I installed ldap login:
Code:
# apt-get install libnss-ldap
# echo "session required pam_mkhomedir.so skel=/etc/skel/" >> /etc/pam.d/common-session
And added ldap to the end of these lines in /etc/nsswitch.conf:
Code:
passwd: compat ldap
group: compat ldap
shadow: compat ldap
This process has worked without a hitch on 9.10 dozens of times. So my question is, why are ldap and local users now incapable of using su across authentication mechanisms? For reference these are the error messages in /var/log/auth.log when trying to su to root from an ldap user:
Code:
Jun 14 16:17:07 server unix_chkpwd[6560]: check pass; user unknownJun 14 16:17:07 server unix_chkpwd[6560]: password check failed for user (root)
Jun 14 16:17:07 server su[6559]: pam_unix(su:auth): authentication failure; logname=ldapuser uid=2000 euid=2000 tty=/dev/pts/5 ruser=ldapuser rhost= user=root
Jun 14 16:17:09 server su[6559]: pam_authenticate: Authentication failure
Jun 14 16:17:09 server su[6559]: FAILED su for root by ldapuser
And the auth.log for trying to su to an ldap user from a local one:
Code:
Jun 14 17:18:18 server su[8473]: pam_unix(su:auth): authentication failure; logname=localuser uid=1000 euid=1000 tty=/dev/pts/0 ruser=localuser rhost= user=ldapuser
Jun 14 17:18:18 server su[8473]: Successful su for ldapuser by localuserJun 14 17:18:18 server su[8473]: + /dev/pts/0 localuser:ldapuser

I've been intrested in linux for the past few months. I'm using Ubuntu 9.x version on my laptop. I'm able to connect to wireless internet as a root user. However when I login as a non root user, I'm not able to connect to wifi. The NetworkManager program doesn't load at all. I've checked the permissions of /usr/sbin/NetworkManager file, it was 755. I did some googling and tried setting 'set user id' for it, resulting in 4755 perm. But still, I can't open up the NetworkManager utility to connect to the WiFi. But I've no problem logging as a root user. I just don't want to connect to Internet as a root user.

I am used to setting up users and groups on my daughters computers with Ubuntu installed.
user: magz (daughter)
user: nigel (me)
group: nima
We each have our own folder for files i.e. magz and nige. This has always worked well and it didn't matter which user is logged in we could create and access files in the other users folder with full permissions.
root@nbsq: /media/2xfi/files# ls -l
total 8
drwxrwxr-x 9 nigel nima 4096 Jul 13 09:45 magz
drwxrwxr-x 3 nigel nima 4096 Jul 13 09:45 nige
I have finally got around to getting her to try Debian which I always use, however I have never had to set up users, groups etc in Debian (squeeze) so I just did what I'm used to with Ubuntu. What I've found is that if I create a folder while I am logged in then that folder cannot be accessed by my daughter when she is logged in and the same applies if she creates a folder then I cannot access it when I am logged in, unless of course I use terminal to change the owners. In each case with the new folder the owner will be: root and the group will be: root. I would have thought what works for Ubuntu would work for Debian, however there must be differences.

/usr/bin/svn update /home/common/webroot/bob
Here is the result.
