I'm running Ubuntu Server 10.04. I run a perl script from the command line to pull a text field from a mysql database which contains some UK pound symbols (�), and it displays the result fine.I have created a web page that pulls the same information from the database and prints the result to a log file. Instead of UK pound symbols I get ax3. This is causing me a lot of grief and am unsure of how to go about fixing it

I am having a problem with my web server. On index.html, it should say "Welcome to my website! More coming soon!" but instead, in Firefox, if I go through my server by going to eggbertx.linium.net or localhost, it shows this:

I know it isn't the file, because the file looks normal if I open it by going to /var/www/html/index.html I looked at /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and it says that it is using UTF-8, which I'm pretty sure is normal. I don't remember it doing this before I installed kdewebdev and ran Quanta Plus, although I have no idea how it could have caused this. Has this happened to anyone else?
I was messing around with the alternate character panel app and made a custom character set. I then wanted to put it on a new panel and created a new panel. I moved the character set to that panel, and then started to mess around with the panel settings (auto hide, show hide buttons, and expand, to be specific.) So far so good, until I moved the panel from the right side of the screen to the top. I already had a panel here, and it seemed not to like hiding a panel when there was already one on the top.
When the new panel hid itself, all my panels stopped responding (any clicks on them did nothing) and my processor started going at 100%. I tried a reboot and the only thing that changed is that now I can't even see my panels. I'm guessing I need to change the settings back manually through the prompt, but I don't know how to do that. I am using 10.04 and have not upgraded gnome since upgrading to 10.04.
I've enabled root under Ubuntu (i know frowned upon), I'd like to change the default behaviour of sudo so that rather than requesting my password (the password I logon with), it requires the root password.
Have searched the forums but can't find the answer.
My problem is, when I start my custom xsession through startx I get almost ideal results; the network manager requires a password every time. But when it is run through gdm I cannot use any of the awesome3 hotkeys (and so alas, cannot actually do _anything_) although the wireless does connect automatically (?).

After upgrading to 10.10 (from 10.04) GRUB has started behaving very oddly. Sometime it work properly, just as usual, sometimes when I select a linux entry from the menu I get an error 16 or 18, sometimes I get an error 16 or 18 before getting to the grub menu, and sometimes the menu does not load at all, instead I am presented with a command prompt (i can then load the menu using the configfile command)

Now it select all the filename including the extension while before it select only the filename. How can I fix this problem? It's very uncomfortable rewrite the extension everytime or remove the extension from the selection.
Whenever I remove my external Freeagent Go USB external harddrive my mouse and keyboard stops responding and all I can do after that is hard-reboot pressing the key on the cabinet.It happened when external harddrive was connected while a powercut, though drive works fine when ever I disconnect it mouse and keyboard stops functioning and I have to hard reboot machine again.

Don't know how to go about this, as I don't even know what the feature is called. Anyone know how to turn it off?(It tends to darken a program I use when the program is actually not getting hung up in any appreciable way.)

As it stands, if I play an mp3 file via the web, firefox will launch totem which will in turn launch goom.
Looks nice, but I would like to turn off the Visualisation which takes up the entire CPU. I try under firefox preferences, Edit->Preferences->Plugins, there isn't anything there I can change.
I try under firefox Utils->Plugins and there isn't anything there I can change.I try using gconf-editor, there are different settings there I can play with like: Under /apps/totem/visual it has the setting "GOOM: what a GOOM!", I try and delete it, it doesn't change anything.
Still with gconf-editor I try changing /apps/totem/plugins/screensaver turning the setting of "active" to uncheck. No change, goom still comes up with the fantastic graphics I just don't want. Still with gconf-editor I try changing /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/visualization from "goom" to blank. Again, no change.

There doesn't seem to be anywhere I can change the command line which is being passed to totem to make it behave differently and turn off the goom visualizations. I have tried starting up totem as a stand alone application, there I go into Edit->Preferences->Display and make sure the choice for "Show visual effects when an audio file is played" is unticked. That gives me the results I am after for totem as a stand alone application, which is no Visualizations whem audio file is being played BUT It makes no change for totem running as a plugin in firefox.
How can I show the gnome 3 launcher on the left of the screen and maybe hide it (I dont really need the hide option though), the same way the unity launcher does.
The only way I can see it now is by clicking the super button to put the laptop in the activities mode view (shown in the picture) so I can see it. I need to change its behavior. any alternative behavior?
I am having a problem with how my windows behave.My windows will maximize and minimize over and over, scroll bars will scroll to the bottom/right automatically, if I click a menu it will pop up for a fraction of a second and then go away. It makes my desktop almost unusable.I can't figure out if this is a mouse or video issue. I have a radeon 9500, and a logitech LX3 optical mouse. BTW, this problem is present in other distributions on my system. I am running KDE. It even does this on the livecd.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI use bash shell and sometimes all of a sudded, my Backspace key stops working (when this happens Ctrl + Backspace still works fine) I am not sure why this happens, but it also carries over to any vim sessions that I use from the shell. To my surprise, getting a fresh shell does not help, and the problem seems to go away as abruptly as it started.
This is what the typed characters look like, each Backspace keypress is shown by a ^? on the shell
I'm having a bit of trouble with my wifi. Every time the network has activity, it blinks between orange and blue. The normal behaviour of the LED is to be blue when wifi is enabled and orange when disabled. Often it blinks rapidly between the two, sometimes appearing white the change is so rapid. You can see how this would be annoying (as well as raise some concern over the life of the LED's)...

I know I was asked about wanting to change/upgrade my shell during the upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze, but I can't remember what it said, and I can't find any documentation about it online. But did something change to bash? Is this documented somehwere?Most notably I see progress messages on one line, overwriting eachother (for instance during an aptitude safe-upgrade).

In Linux or Mac OS X, every window I hover over registers mouse wheel events without being the focused window. For instance I can have two windows open at the same time and scroll in each one of them without clicking either of them first.Can this behaviour somehow be translated to Windows? View 1 Replies View RelatedI need to have the configuration showed on the attached file. I have two machines, one PC (ubuntu 9.10 ) and one embedded CPU with a tailored linux version starting from 2.4.31 linux kernel with Busybox running on PPC architecture.
PC address is 192.168.30.70.
On CPU board I have two ethernet interfaces with addresses :
eth0 192.168.30.30 netmask 255.255.255.0
eth1 192.168.30.40 netmask 255.255.255.0
PC sends messages alternatively to 192.168.30.40 and to 192.168.30.30 .Between two machines there is an ethernet switch to allow messages flowing.
I use ping (from two shells on PC I ping the two addresses on CPU) to simulate messages from PC to CPU and I see this behaviour:
Starting from a situation in which CPU responds to the pings I try to disconnect cable connected to eth0 on CPU. I cannot see any interruption on ping reply on the eth0 port. If i reconnect the cable on eth0 and I disconnect cable on eth1 there are no reply to the two pings (neither from eth0 nor from eth1). It seems that all data flows on one cable just because the addresses are on the same subnet. Is this right?
If this is the right behaviour how can i separate data from PC to CPU in order to force packets to flow on two cables and avoid this sort of internal routing beetween eth0 and eth1?

I am making a library, but I am facing a strange problem while sending data over network using ethernet.
I am sending 39 bytes of the data from one server to slave application but some time slave receives 39 bytes and some time it receives 29 bytes. And when ever slave receives 29 bytes all the memories to which my pointers are pointing get changed. This problem is only when I am sending data from the server to slave, while sending data from slave to server I am facing no such issue.
I just finished reinstalling Squeeze on my little netbook using the debian-6.0.0-i386-netinst.iso and accepting just about all defaults, including that for the Desktop environment in tasksel. It appeared upon rebooting that, much to my surprise, KDE had been installed -- not the usual Gnome. Of course, there's nothing inherently wrong with KDE, but changing the familiar behaviour of the Debian Installer (i.e. to install Gnome) without warning seems a bit much to this long-time Debian user...
View 11 Replies View RelatedOne strange and little annoying issue I notice with my openSUSE 11.3 installation is my Synaptic touchpad behaves way too strange.... Dragging a window or icon - half way around - a click is generated (probably a middle click I guess) and I need to re-drag it again.... In the browser when I try to select a text - again by dragging - a middle click gets generated... The same happens when I use gvim in visual mode too - I end up pasting the code I had selected halfway because of the middle click....
Middle click can be generated only if I press both left and right click buttons - which I'm pretty sure I'm not.... I tried playing around with the touchpad settings but no good.... I'm not able to find anything related to the middle click on the settings application... My touchpad works fine in Ubuntu and was in 11.2 as well.... Yes it works fine in Xp too.
I've got a simple software RAID1 configuration (2x250gb disks) running on Centos 5 where one of the devices appears to have failed.Whilst the system is continuing to run, the ext3 filesystem on the raid device has been placed into read-only mode Is this normal behaviour? As one of the devices is still operational I can't see why this should have happened. Can anyone explain what may have caused the OS to do this?Output from /proc/mdstat is:-

1. As long as i only startup Firefox everything is ok.This seems very logical, cause the firewall shuts out all incomming trafic.
2. As soon as I enter an url, and the internet page start to appear on screen, the **** happens...When receiving a webpage, the firewall allows incomming traffic over the HTTP connection from the webserver BACK into my computer..
3. Then..within 3-5 minutes, without touched my keyboard or mouse,my harddisk is starting to get VERY busy. It looks like someone is remotely searching my harddisk for something
This "very busy harddisk-search behaviour" misteriously disappears again when i close Firefox!

I need a way to count characters without taking into account spaces, on OpenOffice Writer, and a way to do same, plus counting words on OpenOffice Calc. On Calc, it seems impossible to count words, just cels. I need that to help a friend who is a translator and receives per characters like that (without spaces).
She wants to migrate to free software, but she (and I too) couldn't find this tool on OpenOffice. She tells me it's possible to do that on MS Office.
