Ubuntu :: Character Count On Openoffice.org?

Jan 13, 2010

I need a way to count characters without taking into account spaces, on OpenOffice Writer, and a way to do same, plus counting words on OpenOffice Calc. On Calc, it seems impossible to count words, just cels. I need that to help a friend who is a translator and receives per characters like that (without spaces).

She wants to migrate to free software, but she (and I too) couldn't find this tool on OpenOffice. She tells me it's possible to do that on MS Office.

I am trying to count no. of characters in a word but it is coming one more than what it actually should be.

I can have a work around by subtracting 1 from the output (6-1=5 in this case). BUT, I am just curious to know, why the character count is coming as 6 and not 5.

Ubuntu :: Frozen Panel - Messing Around With The Alternate Character Panel App And Made A Custom Character Set

Jun 12, 2011

I was messing around with the alternate character panel app and made a custom character set. I then wanted to put it on a new panel and created a new panel. I moved the character set to that panel, and then started to mess around with the panel settings (auto hide, show hide buttons, and expand, to be specific.) So far so good, until I moved the panel from the right side of the screen to the top. I already had a panel here, and it seemed not to like hiding a panel when there was already one on the top.

When the new panel hid itself, all my panels stopped responding (any clicks on them did nothing) and my processor started going at 100%. I tried a reboot and the only thing that changed is that now I can't even see my panels. I'm guessing I need to change the settings back manually through the prompt, but I don't know how to do that. I am using 10.04 and have not upgraded gnome since upgrading to 10.04.

Gimp works fine editing and saving photos from/to the nfs share. kWrite can do its thing and read/create files on the NAS. Files I create with vim are visible and editable under windows. OpenOffice however, when I try an open a file I get "file is locked by unknown user." I open as copy and try saving to the share with a different name... No Dice, error saving to share the file is created on the share but it is empty. I did some reading and found a post that said to comment a line from a file called soffice, which I cannot find.

I mean Linux is booting off the hard drive this is supposedly unsorted apparently and managing telling me is unsupported... so it can't be that unsupported now can it? Sounds more like linux trying to blame bios for linux's problem.

General :: Recursively Count All The Files In A Directory?

Oct 12, 2010

I have a really deep directory tree on my Linux box. I would like to count all of the files in that path, including all of the subdirectories.

For instance, given this directory tree:

/home/blue
/home/red
/home/dir/green
/home/dir/yellow
/home/otherDir/

If I pass in /home, I would like for it to return 4 files. Or, bonus points if it returns 4 files, 2 directories. Basically, I want the equivalent of right-clicking a folder on Windows and selecting properties and seeing how many files/folders are contained in that folder.

How can I most easily do this? I have a solution involving a Python script I wrote, but why isn't this as easy as running ls | wc or similar?

Programming :: Find Files Older Than X And Count Them?

Nov 29, 2010

I have log files that should be parsed and then deleted by a script on a regular basis. Sometimes things don't work for a variety of reasons and the log files sit and sit and are never dealt with. What I need is a small script that can give me the files older than X days and a count of those files.

What I have so far helps me take care of things manually but I need a little automation in my life Here is what I have: I can count all the files in the necessary directories recursively with this: ls -laR | wc -l And I can find all the files that are older than 10 days that haven't been deleted yet by doing this: find /home/mike/logs -type f -mtime +10 But how do I put both of them into a script that will just give me the end number of both?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Get The Physical CPU Socket Count In RHEL?

Jun 30, 2011

We are working on our subscription renewal and now since Red Hat has changed their subscription model we need to give them the number of physical CPU sockets on each system.

I have tried looking thru /proc/cpuinfo as well as tried to parse data out from dmidecode but both of those solutions count each individual core as a CPU.

Is there a clean and easy way to determine the number of sockets on each system? We also use RHN Satellite to manage our systems but I believe that is pulling the same data from dmidecode.
