Ubuntu Servers :: Natty Apt-get Update Hash Mismatch?
May 22, 2011
I keep getting a very frustrating error after reinstalling 11.04 on a 64-bit server:
Code:
W: Failed to fetch gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_universe_source_Sources Hash Sum mismatch
which follow
Code:
bzip2: Data integrity error when decompressing.
[Code]...
I originally installed 11.04 on this system with the same disk so I'm confused as to what is happening. I have tried using different CD's and even installed of a USB. The memory test of the installer came back okay. The box has two PCI NICs that are recognized and functioning. The only package I have installed is openssh as this is a headless box. What makes this even more odd is that I have a newly installed 32-bit 11.04 server with the same procedure on the same network and it does just fine.
I hope I have been thorough enough in my search and investigation that someone can point me in the right direction. After reinstalling 3 times I am at a loss and I know 11.04 can run on my box without problem (as it did before the reinstall).Tonight I'm going to reinstall with the built in interface unplugged and the two NICs removed, I'm hoping this will prevent apt from bricking itself during the install, which is the only think left I can think of. I suspect the issue has to do with the nic despite it appearing to function properly I am unable to uncompress the archives in question on, my workstation, when they are downloaded on the sever but can successfully uncompress the same files when downloaded on the workstation.
SOLUTION: I pulled both NIC's and enabled the integrated interface and it is all working. I wonder why they didn't work though...

Ive been experiencing problems with my squid3 recently, i am using 10.04.3 LTS. Configured squid as always have been configuring since 8.04.04, but its not working as it should be.Ive been having issues with bz2 files, in my LAN when i try to do an apt-get update, it just says some indexes could not be downloaded cause of a sum hash mismatch.If you check squid log, for that kind of file it saysTCP_REFRESH_UNMODIFIED/206 Google around i read thats ssquid cache keeppin the files more than usual, so i add this hoping to solve the problem:refresh_pattern -i .bz2$ 0 0% 60 override-lastmod refresh-ims override-expireI dont know if thats well written or not, but it doesnt have solve the problem, and now squid log shows,TCP_REFRESH_UNMODIFIED/304but the same behaviour of the hash sum mismatch, please if someone could throw a ligth in here. The only fix to this problem so far is deleting all cache and recreate it every morning, which is far from a solution.

I have tried installing skype through synaptic package manager, downloading from website through software centre and also manually using apt-get and dpkg. All I get is the same error - hash sum mismatch so file could not be retrieved. have tried the apt-get update and makes same error. not entirely certain what the --fix missing does or how to run it.

Im trying to update the system packages list by doing "aptitude update", but I got a error like this:
W: Failed to fetch http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... 4/Packages: Hash Sum mismatch
E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
E: Couldn't rebuild package cache
After searching the Web, I saw that many foruns seems to suggest to erase the reference list of packages using the command " rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/" and then run "aptitude update" again. I did that but the error still pops up.

For years I've had ctrl + alt + 1-4 (keypad) as shortcuts to desktop 1-4. It's worked flawlessly under everything from Slackware, through Debian and even the gnarled mess that Ubuntu is becoming.But now, ctl + alt + 1 dumps whatever window is active on my desktop to the bottom left corner of that desktop. Ctrl + alt + 3 dumps it to the bottom right corner;A7 goes top left and you can guess the rest.

As a side note, when I enter Update Manager, it does not show 10.10 as an available update. I have checked my settings. I am quite kurfluddled by all of this.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop fails and has been failing for the last two days, I installed both the lto and the 10.10 newest, starts out OK and runs for about 5 minutes then finishes with many 'failed to fetch [URL] size mismatch issues. This is the first one after many installs over the last two years. Is there something going on with the US servers? On closer examination of running sudo apt-get update it seems to be fine till it hits the pool directory on the server, lucid main and lucid-updates are fine, breaks when it goes past those.

After updating to natty I cannot compile any Gtk+ code, no matter what I do I get linker errors. This is not a problem with the way I'm building it, I'm familiar with the correct usage of pkg-config.
Even this code will fail to link:
Code:
#include <gtk/gtk.h>
int main(int argc, char** argv) {
gkt_init(&argc, &argv);
gtk_main(); }
(Compiled with the standard commands to compile Gtk+ stuff)
I always get the following output:
Code:
/usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so: undefined reference to `g_source_get_time'
/usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so: undefined reference to `g_get_monotonic_time'
/usr/lib/libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so: undefined reference to `g_simple_async_result_take_error'
/usr/lib/libgdk-x11-2.0.so: undefined reference to `g_slist_free_full'

I accepted the latest Natty update about which I was notified a couple of days ago (I don't remember exactly). I don't remember a new kernel being pushed out, but for the record I'm on 2.6.38-8-generic right now. I'm trying to interact with a USB compact flash reader and I'm getting ridiculously low throughput (less than 1 MB per second). Before this latest upgrade, I don't remember this being a problem.
Better yet, does anybody know what might be wrong and what I might be able to do to fix this?

I have an 10.10 Maverick Ubuntu, and I've tried to update it to Natty version, but when I try it says to I check my connection with Internet and then close the update app, but my connection is fine, I think this could be something related to the host, since when I try to use sudo or play Frets on Fire it says that they "couldn't resolve the host".

I have to manage a publicly accessible computer, and people know the password and are willing to click just anything, that pops up and has a "yes"/"ok"/"i agree" button on it, just to make the message disappear. (yes, I hate their ignorance ...) As long as they can use the net, that is all they care about...
My question is, can I still get updates for Maverick without being prompted for upgrade to Natty? Also I would like to remove the button from Update Manager. Is there a simple way to do that?

Currently I am trying to update my drivers in 11.04 on a dell inspiron mini.
I do not believe it is a pure dell problem, as my regular dell xps running 10.10 has been having to problems updating.
I go into additional drivers and start having it search but it gets stuck and states:
Downloading package indexes failed, please check your network status. Most drivers will not be available.
Does this mean the servers are just really busy? Or do I have a problem somewhere on my end?

I was messing around with some stuff I probably shouldn't have when trying to get my Intel graphics card working better (that's another problem completely). Now the update manager has ceased to work. Every time I try to use it this error pops up:
Quote:
Could not initialize the package information
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Type [url] is not known on line 57 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list'

When I run the update manager in XUbuntu (natty/11:04) it does not show its progress while installing the upgrades.
After clicking on "install updates" and authenticating, there used to be a popup window with a progress bar and an option to show "details" but these appear to have disappeared in the last few days.
I don't recall switching these features off and there are no settings to restore them, available within the GUI. Is there another way of restoring this functionality?
If not, is a reinstall the way to go? If so what package(s) need re-installing? And in-case it is a configuration script, what files in my home directory need deleting to ensure a clean reinstall.

I cannot get the update or software center to work now that I am running natty. When I try to update manager it says

I assume that the software center has something to do with this too...

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and I'd like to know when does the update manager upgrade the system to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I do not want it to do the upgrade too early,as this might cause problems.I heard they're going to release Natty by the end of April,when it passes the beta stage but it will take 3-4 months for the bugs to be fixed. Also,please answer my other thread,it has new posts: [URL]
