Ubuntu Servers :: Mysterious Harddrive Errors (not Through SSH As Usual)

Jul 14, 2010

When I restarted one of my servers today and actually worked directly on the system (not through SSH as usual), some weird error messages kept appearing in the console. So I checked the syslog and found several instances of the following lines:

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Won't Share Second Harddrive?

Jun 20, 2010

My first post, and I'm an Ubuntu n00b. But I've done a lot of reading and still can't seem to get anywhere with this. First of all. I know that I've set Samba up correctly because I can create a share in /home/documents which is mounted on my primary hard drive /dev/sda1, Windows 7 can access it no problem. But, when I try to set up a Samba share on my second hard drive /dev/sdb1, Windows 7 cannot access it. I've mounted the share in /media/Share The error I get in Window 7 is: " Windows cannot access \HOMESERVERData Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network."

My first thought is I must have the hard drive mounted or formatted incorrectly, but I can't find anything on this forum to tell me otherwise. I feel like I need to restart the process of this Samba set up. Can someone please guide me through: reformatting sdb1, mounting sdb1, setting up my smb.conf, fstab, and any other config files required to use my second hard drive as a Samba share?

Ubuntu Servers :: Both The Virual Machines Have 50GB Of Harddrive Thought One Had Another 1TB To Use

Jan 10, 2011

I'm the proud owner of a new 1U server, thought dont really know how to handle the next problem. The server runs VMWare ESXi 4.x and currently contains two virtual machines with Ubuntu server 10.04 installed on them. Both the virual machines have 50GB of Harddrive, thought one had another 1TB to use.

One of these virtual machines is going to be a fileserver (and has the 1TB for that reason) while the other machine is purely going to be used as webserver. The system uses one harddiskdrive of 1.5TB (hardware raid 1 configured)

The fileserver will contain images, which should be shown on the webserver. Therefor I need to setup a link between the images directory on the fileserver, so it can be accessed by the webserver. Now this is one and the same harddisk, but the partition is only availeble in the fileserver.

How can i configure this directory, so it can be accessed by the webserver automatically (e.g. that I dont have to remount the directory, after the fileserver has been down for whatever reason)

Ubuntu :: Mysterious Lack Of Connectivity After Server Reboot?

Jun 23, 2010

Every time I reboot my server, it no longer connects to the internet. It is dual-homed with an internal and an external interface. Both come up. The internal connection works fine. Nothing happens on the external interface. Ifconfig shows that both interfaces are setup correctly. My iptables settings are properly restored. Forwarding is automatically enabled. For some reason packets do not go anywhere on the external interface. This has been true ever since the upgrade to jaunty I think (now running lucid).

Once I restart the external interface it works perfectly (eg ifdown eth1; ifup eth1 or /etc/init.d/networking restart). The problem only occurs after a reboot and only occurs on the external interface.

Here's my /etc/network/interfaces file:

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static

Fedora :: Mysterious Sounds Emanating From Computer

Jun 12, 2010

All of a sudden this morning my computer started making these mysterious sounds. The first sound is a sequence of three notes going up. About a minute later there is a sequence of three notes going down. There is nothing in the system tray to indicate that anything is abnormal. When it started doing it I updated, restarted, updated again, and finally restarted. I did not update again after that thinking that this is not a Windows machine, so that would not be necessary.

Ubuntu Servers :: Md Raid 10 Errors

Jul 26, 2011

I've had this server for a while and I've periodically received similar errors, but it's been worse lately. I'm trying to diagnose and similar posts have left me with 2, maybe 3, ideas about what could be wrong. Here is the setup: Ubuntu Server 10.10 maverick kernel 2.6.35-30-server Sans Digital TR8 8 bay raid - 2 port multipliers to esata outputs 8 1TB WD Caviar Black Syba PCI-e card with Sil3124 chipset - 2 external esata inputs I do not use the RocketRaid 622 card that came w/the enclosure because I had problems with drivers and configuration so I went with the SI chipset. The raid is configured with mdadm, level 10, running ext3 file system:

Code:
root@i5server:~# cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10]
md0 : active raid10 sdb1[5] sdg1[2] sdd1[7] sdh1[3] sdf1[1] sde1[0] sdc1[6] sda1[4]
3906721792 blocks 256K chunks 2 far-copies [8/8] [UUUUUUUU]

[Code].....

What's odd is that the raid dropped out and completely locked up the computer multiple times, then marked one of the drives as failed. I did a readd on the drive and it rebuilt witout issue. Ran e2fsck -f to clean up the problems it had when it crashed, but as soon as I do heavy read/writes the errors start showing up again. This is primarily a media server for music and movies, but also for backups and printing. Heavy read/writes are generally transcoding movies and music which is what I was doing when it failed.

Ubuntu :: Mysterious Windows 7 X64 Crash After Rebooting From Ubuntu 11.04?

May 15, 2011

I've been dual booting Ubuntu based distros and Windows 7 x64 for a couple of years now, but since installing Ubuntu Natty I've been experiencing a strange problem. Every time I reboot from Ubuntu and load Windows, Windows will always crash and reboot shortly after reaching the desktop. This even happens in Safe Mode, but if you simply reload Windows after the crash it works perfectly. The only error report in the event viewer is a kernel-power one stating that the system shut down unexpectedly. I'm not even getting a BSOD.

This only started happening after installing Ubuntu 11.04, but even so I thought this must have been a coincidence up until now. However, after a lot of testing it really does only happen after rebooting from Ubuntu. If I load Windows from GRUB straight after switching my PC on, it works fine. If I reboot Windows after this and boot straight back into Windows, it works fine. I can only assume that Ubuntu is doing something weird to the Windows hard drive without appearing to mount it.

It's strange because it all worked fine just about two hours ago and I am not sure since I have the server automatically download security updates if there is something it automatically downloaded that caused this. Also how to make the server stop automatically downloading security updated?

Ubuntu Servers :: Dropping Network Connection And Other Errors

Sep 11, 2010

I set up the web/backup server for our department and I'm having some major issues. Firstly, the server seems to be dropping the network connection periodically. I checked all of the logs and it appeared to be an IP6 issue as the only message that seemed to correlate with it was "eth0: no IPv6 routers present" in syslog. I added "ipv6.disable=1" to my boot options in menu.lst and this seemed to take care of the problem. However, I woke up this morning and the server was back down.

This didn't seem to take care of the problem. It seems to occur when my automatic backup scripts go through. I have several BASH backup scripts that use rysnc over SSH to backup several computers to the server and the server to my desktop at home. I was able to trigger the problem a couple of times running the backup script this morning. Now, I'm getting the following error when running the script, instead of losing the network connection:

Code:
Sep 11 10:22:40 chemistry kernel: [ 396.892699] BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000118
Sep 11 10:22:40 chemistry kernel: [ 396.892715] IP: [<ffffffff811426c0>] __dentry_open+0x240/0x370

Sep 11 10:22:40 chemistry kernel: [ 396.892750] CPU 1 .....

I tried booting with a previous kernel to see if that was the problem and I'm still getting this error. I've searched through all of the logs that I could think of to try to track down any software based problems and I just don't see anything. In the past, whenever I've run into such serious with a Linux box that popped up out of nowhere, it's always been a hardware failure. I've currently disabled all of the backup scripts and I'm going to see if it lasts through the weekend.

Ubuntu :: Windows Boot Also Took Much Longer Than Usual - Screen Wouldn't Appear

Jan 7, 2011

Before I begin, here are some computer specs:

Toshiba Satellite C655
2 GB Ram
250 GB HDD
Intel Celeron 900 Joules / 2.2 GHz
64 bit

So, a little backstory. For christmas I got a new laptop with Windows 7, and while Win7 is a good operating system, I wanted to try Ubuntu and see which one I liked better. I installed the 32 bit version, because I understand people run 32 bit Ubuntu on 64 bit machines with out problems. For the first few days, everything was going amazing and I was pretty much using only Ubuntu (I had a dual boot with WIn7). One day, I opened my lid to find that the log in screen wouldn't appear, so I restarted.

I wish I could remember what error I got, but everytime grub tried to load Ubuntu, it wouldn't load, it just gave me some error (it may have been a kernel panic, not sure). So I went into windows, burned a windows repair disc, and fixed the MBR to be the windows boot loader instead of grub, then deleted the Ubuntu partition. Shortly after, I tried the 64 bit Ubuntu installation, and it wouldn't even boot up after the first boot (unfortunately, can't remember the error I got then either). So I repeated the MBR fix for Windows, and just stuck with Windows for a while. However, a new problem arose. Every now and then (and in time, more frequently) everything would freeze, for 1 to 2 seconds.

It couldn't have been my RAM or anything, the computer was blazing fast when I got it. The windows boot also took much much longer than usual, until it just wouldn't boot at all. I had my father (who's much more knowledgeable at computers) to do something, and he loaded into an earlier recovery partition ran a program called CCleaner, which supposedly fixed it. However, the problem was still there, and it got worse. I tried CHKDSK, it didn't do anything. The random freeze ups kept happing more frequently and became more and more bothersome. Eventually my computer just wouldn't boot up, it would just be a blank screen after the 'Toshiba' logo.

I eventually called Toshiba and they said that I apparently deleted the original recovery partition, and needed a Windows install disc, which I don't have so I have to buy one. Until then, I decided to just do a complete install of Ubuntu (64 bit), since I figured if I just did a complete fresh install removing everything, it would fix it. Well, turns out it had the same freeze up problem. I then tried a clean install of 32 bit Ubuntu. No luck, still periodical freeze ups, sometimes if the freeze ups are longer the screen will go grey. Before all this mess Ubuntu ran perfectly. I'm fearing that it may be my hard drive that's the problem, but I'm not entirely sure. So, is there anything I can do to restore my laptop to full health with out buying a new hard drive? Unless the hard drive isn't the problem, but I don't see what else is. EDIT: I tried memtest. Here are the results: It says 'Pass complete, no errors'. What do you guys think?

Ubuntu :: Cant Use Usual Ways To Increase Timeout On Grub Menu

Apr 6, 2011

I have an Alienware M11x r2 laptop running Windows 7-63 and Ubuntu 10.10 Unity installed. It was all fine and dandy until I changed my grub timeout to 1 sec (or perhaps 0, its been so long i can't remember!) to reduce the waiting time until an OS boots. My grub was set to boot to Windows 7 as default. Now when I boot up I cannot halt the boot process not matter what key I press (e.g SHIFT).I am doomed to forever boot into Windows. Its been months and I had written off my Ubuntu OS but I am tempted to try and fix this one more time.Since I cannot access the Ubuntu installation AT ALL I cant use the usual ways to increase the timeout on the grub menu (yes I have searched the forums far and wide).

Is there ANY way of changing the grub menu parameters without actually booting into Ubuntu Unity? Can I modify the timeout settings using a live cd or usb boot?
