Ubuntu Servers :: Connetion Errors For Sudo Apt-get Update / Solve This?
Mar 24, 2011
I have a connection error when i try to use
sudo apt-get apache2 install
I'm running a virtual server with ubuntu server installed as the OS. The physical server is windows 2008.
I have configured the interface for a static ip code...
I have configured my resolv.conf so it points to the correct nameserver ip
When i ping both an ip or a hostname everything is OK
but when i run
sudo apt-get update
I just get a load of connection errors and i cannot install any packages

Ive just done the latest update ( AFAICT principally an upgraded kernel and firefox stuff)
I reboot the computer and then the perl script that was working whilst the upgrade was going on , now doesn't work , and i get prompted to save the *.pl file
WTF
mea culpa - on rebooting the browser , id left a stray 'print ' before writing the HTML header

I wanted to installed transmission on my buntu server box 10.10 tonite so from my laptop top i ssh'd into it...which took an unordinary amount of time.. went to type in sudo apt-get install transmission half way through each word at the terminal prompt it would just hang...had to wait then it would recognize my typing and i could continue....pressed enter waited a long time; then noticed i coulnd't connect to the repos?
So i manually (as in sitting at the box not over ssh) tried to ping google nothing....sudo apt-get update....nothing....
- i restarted the machine twice
-sudo ifdown eth0 /sudo ifup eth0
sudo nano /etc/networking/interfaces made sure it said

I have my router saved to assign 192.168.0.100 to the machines eth0 MAC of 00:14:2a:e9:15:0b so i can always use my webUI w/o having to guess my ip ifconfig shows my broadcast running i dunno i'm sooo confused and lost scared...a lil' cold....kinda hungry..pretty tired....
I'm on cli no gui anyone ever have this?

xulrunner-1.9.1-gnome support
After click on install updates and entering password, a message says "Some of the packages could not be retrieved from the server(s). Do you want to continue, ignoring these packages? Yes/No.
If I answer No, this message appears:
W: Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/po....10.1_i386.deb
404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.31 80]
If Yes, it tries to download but immediately:
W: Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/po....10.1_i386.deb

It has always installed the updates with no problems, until these 3 updates remain in pending installation status.

This is the error I get when removing gnome-session:
alex@alex:~$ sudo apt-get remove gnome-session

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies.
ubuntu-desktop : Depends: gnome-session but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: banshee-extension-ubuntuonemusicstore but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: gnome-accessibility-themes but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: ubuntuone-client-gnome but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
And this is what happens when I do apt-get -f install:
alex@alex:~$ sudo apt-get -f install

I am from India, and I tried to update my Ubuntu system today. Code: $sudo apt-get update The update failed because the connection to the India mirror timed out: Code: [URL] Could not connect to in.archive.ubuntu.com:80 (111.91.91.37). - connect (110: Connection timed out) I tried the update a few times, with the same result every time.
I had firestarter running at this time, and noticed that I would get new security events every time I tried an update. I checked the events list, and it turned out that the machine at the ip address 111.91.91.37 (the in.archive.ubuntu.com machine, to go by the above error message) had been trying to make connections to seemingly random ports on the machine every time I tried the update: see the attached screenshot. I then changed my repositories to the Main Server using Synaptic, and tried the update again (from the command-line). This time it worked without a hitch, and firestarter did not report any unwanted incoming connection. why is the India mirror trying to open connections that the Main server apparently does not need in order for me to do the update? Should I (we) be concerned?

When I try to update from a Debian notification of new updates the update window freezes without showing the updates. When I try to update in a terminal, I get the following message: "Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?". If another process is using it, I know nothing about it. How do I solve this problem?

I have a problem with the kernel update to 2.6.34.6. Up until 2.6.33.x my system boots fine, but with this update the boot stops at the moment that the mouse cursor should become visible. To resolve the problem, I've gone back to 2.6.33.x and removed the 2.6.34 kernel but I wonder what happens with the next kernel update.
Anyone else having this problem?

Ejabberd fails to start in f-12. ejabberd-2.0.5-9.fc12.i686. This ran fine in f-10 and f-11. Getting a large number of strange error messages from the ejabberd log code...
Looks like it may be a permissions problem.
Anybody from the ejabberd community here that has gotten ejabberd to work on f-12?

I just got this error message when Update Manager tried updating:
Could not initialize the package information
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Type 'sudo' is not known on line 56 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list'
I've been using Ubuntu for awhile, so I know my way around some stuff, but I'm completely lost on what to do here.
