Ubuntu Servers :: MySWL Fails On Startup?
Jul 18, 2010
I cannot get MySQL to start on startup. Every time I need to run the following command from the command line to get it going:
Code:
start mysql
If I try to use MySQL from the command line before starting MySQL I get
Code:
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)
How to resolve this once and for all

I recently got a new HDD for my laptop. Did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04. The install worked fine, updated everything with update manager. The problem: Sometimes the startup process fails, but this only occurs randomly. When startup fails I am left with a black screen with a line of strange pixelated red characters along the very top of the screen (they actually remind me of that old space-invaders game). This occurs before the boot-splash or login screen can appear. The system in this condition will not respond even to a REISUB command. It has to be hard-booted. Most of the time however, Ubuntu boots up fine with not a problem to be seen.
I also had this same error occur once when using the 10.04 live CD. (Please note: the cd is not the problem, I always check my md5 sums on downloads and verify burns).

I grabbed the dapper drake "alternate" install ISO and burned it from my Macbook Pro to a boot disk, and went through the entire install process on my Power Mac G4 400mhz "Yikes!". After install it starts right up to the boot prompt (is that what its called?), and i generally just hit "enter". after a flash to a white screen, it comes back to a black screen and gives me a few lines of errors, the first of which reads:
[code]...
Now the drive that linux is installed on was literally formatted right then by the installer, so i'm not sure what the issue may be. I have another drive on the disk with Mac OS 9 installed that is set as the master drive, but it seemed to find the linux drive no problem. during install i was informed it would write partions #3 and #4 to the drive.

I just recently put Ubuntu 10.10 for ppc on a Cd-R and installed it onto an old Mac I had found. The installation seemed perfectly fine I booted the computer and was presented to boot with two options "Linux" and "old" or to press enter and boot default. I had decided to boot default and it reaches the splash screen where the loading bar advances two dots and then completely stops.

I just installed Opensuse 11.2, and have come across the following error upon bootup: the display manager screen refuses to load, unless I type STARTX at the cli line. the error messages read: failed services in runlevel 5 /etc/init.d/xdm.orig start returned 6 earlyxdm postfix Further, I am unable to activate the xdm service under Yast. Has anyone else run across this error? Not sure how to resolve.

I'm currently running Fedora 13 and updated the system in the morning with the help of 'yumex'. It complained about a couple of unresolved dependencies regarding new kernel and kmod-nvidia, so I manually skipped these packages for now (this happened before some time ago and worked then a couple of days later). I installed all other packages like firefox, thunderbird, kde, gnome pidgin etc. though.
I think I remember also to have seen some X11 stuff, but aren't quite sure (not updating often, so always getting quite a number of packages at once). The problem is that the system doesn't start any longer. The start screen shows the blue progress bar, then flickers and the system halts. I tried to start any of the last two older kernels but with the same result. When running in verbose mode I can see the following:
...
Checking for module nvidia.ko: [OK]
Enabling the nvidia driver: /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions: line 530: 1033 Segmentation fault "$@"
[FAILED]
...
There are a couple of more successful steps afterwards, but the system will never start. I tried a different runlevel by appending 'init 2' to the startup line, but wasn't able to login with any of my users. In despair I tried the link 'Updating to Fedora 13' from the boot menu, but it isn't actually offering an upgrade, but a complete re-install instead.

This one has been bugging me for some time now. The network interface (as defined in Debian's /etc/network/interfaces file) fails to obtain an IP address from myuter. However dhclient br0 does.I'm using br0 since I run a XP virtual machine.network/interface changes are from a Debian howto on setting up the tap interface. As near as I can tell, the /etc/init.d/networking script basically calls /sbin/ifup -a. ifup is a binary. My /etc/network/interfaces file is:

On startup my machine (a PC a few years old with recent Fedora 13 clean install) seems to be OK until it tries to get to the Login GUI, where it stalls at the f/infinity Fedora logo. The last things I did before shutting down my computer last were uninstalling the mail client Evolution via the GUI package manager and downloading a torrent. Could these have effected such a stuff up? I'm not altogether clear on logging in via a terminal.

A couple weeks ago I installed Ubuntu Security and Recommended Updates that included an update to Linux Kernel 2.6.31-20. Upon installing these updates I was prompted to restart my computer for the changes to take effect. So I rebooted and encountered a Hyper Transport Sync Flood error each time I tried to boot, preventing me from booting into the OS.The above linked forum thread about the error suggested I manually adjust voltage settings in the BIOS to resolve the issue, so I gave it a try to no avail. Then I decided I would just reset my BIOS settings to the defaults (seeing as I hadn't edited that many settings to begin with). After doing so, I tried booting only to encounter a black screen with "GRUB _" printed on it.
I have encountered this issue before when I initially installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my system, but I'm not sure whether this occurrence is strictly BIOS setting related or if something effected my bootloader. (On a side note, resetting my BIOS settings to defaults seemed to, at least for now, eliminate the Hyper Transport Sync Flood error I was getting...and instead leave me with another problem.)I used this script created by meierfra. to provide info on my current boot setup, the results of which are displayed below.
Code:

just built a computer and wanted to try out some linux.
First off I burned the Fedora 10 x86_64 disk image (using disk utility on my mac at 4x speed then verified it) to a dvd. I start the install. "x startup fails to load, falling back to text mode" comes up. I use the text install then. It gets to the actual installation of the different packages then a black screen shows up with white text that's highlighted red (sometimes it's blue). It then freezes and I reboot. Sometimes it freezes at different points and with different messages, but the description above is what happens most often.
I try writing it at 1x speed and verifying. same thing.I try the Live CD. It freezes. Then I tried Fedora 9. same thing.
Next I go to Ubuntu 8.10.I try the regular install, but the orange loading bar freezes.I try the Live CD-like install. It runs!...but when i go to install, when it gets to the partitioning part, it freezes and becomes unresponsive.
Each time it froze I let it sit for about 10 minutes, just to make sure it is in fact frozen. I've tried these installs numerous times.

My first post here. I've been using Ubuntu to run our internal mail server for a while now on Ubuntu server 9.04 and ISPconfig 2. I've read a lot of threads on poeple that have difficulty connecting to their server using SSH from outside the LAN and it is not the same problem I have. Well, not entirely the same.
My problem is that my authentication fails from outside the LAn, but I can connect to the SSH port from outside my LAN. The other threads pointed towards checking the router port forwarding etc, but I can see my SSH log in asking for my username and password. So, at this stage I know the port forwarding worked, otherwise I wouldn't even see the log in prompt.
Has anyone see this before where you can connect, but the authentication fails? I can use the correct username and password from inside the LAN, but using the same credentials from outside fails.

I have just moved to rackspacecloud and created a Ubuntu 9.10 server. Moved everything over all fine (7-10 wordpress sites). Now I have a couple rails apps that need to move over and run on postgresql 8.4.
I installed postgresql via sudo apt-get as per usual. Usually at this point the postgresql server starts up and I can forget about it. But no luck. I booted it by running /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 start. When I run that command it boots fine, I can connect via psql no trouble.
I rebooted the machine to see what happened. After boot, apache and mysql started just fine, wp sites came up nicely no trouble. postgresql wouldn't start up.
I have tried installing from source, I have tried using different /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 scripts. I have no idea what to do.
I have downgraded to upstart to 0.6.3-10. I have apt-get updated, upgraded. I have Googled. I have pushed and pulled.
Usually with any linux issue in the past I have been able to find a solution on the net or work it out myself. This one stumps me to no end.
The other irritating part is that while I wait to work out this issue I am still paying for my old server running my Rails apps.

one of the servers is the "main guy" which has NIS and NFS. the others mount the partition and can log in whith the same "main" account.
my problem is that i need to call a startup script "settings.sh" to set some enviroment variables for the cluster to work.
this script is on the NFS folder.
i would like if possible to call this script as early as possible, even before login phase, since they are servers and can be shutdown, restarted, etc.
at the moment i need to log via ssh into every one of the 4 nodes and do "source /opt/cfc/sge/default/common/settings.sh" manually each time they reboot.
i would like to put this script somewhere so that it gets called after the NFS mount, but without the need to log into an account. is possible?
otherwise i could set the nodes to automatically login into the main account..
im a little confused on something really simple, i know. But on the past i always used .bash_rc, this time i dont want to take that solution.

"apt-get install -f" doesn't help. How can I install the necessary dependencies to get this working?

Attempting to install 10.04 Server on an IBM Series X 232 server. Its an old server with dual p III's, 4 small drives and an adaptec controller with a RAID 5 array. The server is currently running CentOS 5.5.
The CD I am installing from is known good. I verified it after I wrote it and verified it again during the install process. The system boots from the CD, I accept the defaults, then it fails at "adding additional components".

I've just installed the ubuntu server system on an old PC i'm going to be using as, you guessed it, a server. Because I like (some) graphical tools while configuring I also installed ubuntu-desktop on it afterwards.
The only problem is that I want to keep ubuntu-desktop, but that I don't want to boot into the (memory consuming) graphical interface by default.Does anyone know how to do that? (set the default boot to command-prompt). Also, does anyone have tips on packages I c an safely remove to clear up space and memory? (Like: openoffice, Evolution,Rhythmbox etc. are very obvious, but maybe some more hidden services and alike? Networkmanager e.g.?)

I have a server that, due to the amount of data it's moving, tends to trash up the hard drive when I have a power outage or crash. It doesn't have a keyboard or monitor attached to it normally so it's a real pain when I have to boot it back up. I have to hook one up just to hit F to have it fix all the errors. Is there a way to have it do this automatically on boot rather then having to confirm it?

I'm having a problem with a server I just got. The first thing I did when I got it was to format the drive and install ubuntu server, but on booting up I got a black screen and my monitor (samsung syncmaster914v) displayed a bouncing notification with the text "not optimum mode recommended mode: 1280 x 1024 60hz". However at one by using a combination of plugging in the monitor after booting, and pressing random keys on the keyboard I was albe to boot into the server, and was able to access the monitor meu, which told me it was running at 640x480, and 60 hertz. having access to the console I stupidly tried changing the resolution and then rebooted, getting the same black screen.

In Jaunty (9.04) I've setup a small (eleven-terminal) ltsp network at the local school. It handled around 6600 working hours with ease.
Now I've upgrade the server to Karmic Koala (9.10) and it just stopped working.
1) The clients have PXE NICs
2) They get the proper IPs from the DHCP server and respond appropriately to changes in the DHCP configuration files.
3) DHCP server also points the clients to
filename=/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.0
4) When the clients try to download the pxelinux.0 over tftp they just timeout
5) /etc/inetd.conf has an entry like
tftp dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/in.tftpd /usr/sbin/in.tftpd -s /var/lib/tftpboot
6) The file /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.0 exists on the server
I'm lost at all these configuration files and protocols.
