Ubuntu :: Sometimes The Startup Process Fails

Mar 13, 2011

I recently got a new HDD for my laptop. Did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04. The install worked fine, updated everything with update manager. The problem: Sometimes the startup process fails, but this only occurs randomly. When startup fails I am left with a black screen with a line of strange pixelated red characters along the very top of the screen (they actually remind me of that old space-invaders game). This occurs before the boot-splash or login screen can appear. The system in this condition will not respond even to a REISUB command. It has to be hard-booted. Most of the time however, Ubuntu boots up fine with not a problem to be seen.

I also had this same error occur once when using the 10.04 live CD. (Please note: the cd is not the problem, I always check my md5 sums on downloads and verify burns).

Ubuntu :: Gnunetd Process Running At Startup?

Dec 5, 2010

I installed Gnunet (a secure P2P program) on Ubuntu 10.10 using Ubuntu software centre but had difficulties getting it to work so removed it. However, the gnunetd process loads at startup. It is only visible when typing 'top' in the console and not in the system monitor list of processes.gnunetd --version tells me that it is 0.8.1b sudo apt-get remove gnunetd tells me 'unable to locate package' why the process loads and how to remove it? I can kill it in the console but would like a way of getting rid of it permanently.

Red Hat :: Running A Process Behind The Scenes At Startup?

May 6, 2010

I have not been able to find any information on this, mostly because I am sure I am searching for the wrong terms. Let me explain what it is I need to do.I have a timeclock process that needs to be running all the time on my Red Hat server. Right now, I manually start the process from terminal:Code:# ./timeclockThis runs the process inside the terminal. The only problem is that if I close the terminal by accident, the timeclock stops working. This is all well and good for now, until I get more timeclocks. Then I will need to have one terminal open per. What I would like to do is to make this process run at start up, and run behind the scenes (no terminal). At the same time, I need to be able to re-run the process (again, hopefully behind the scenes) in case the timeclock goes offline or the process crashes.I know very basic things about Linux administration, and I know it is possible to do this (as there are processes now setup by someone else that do this), I just do not know how. EDIT: An idea I had would be to make the script run every minute, checking to see if the process is already running, and if it is not, then to start it. That way it would automatically correct itself if it went offline.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Startup Fails G4 PM Yikes 6.06

Jan 24, 2010

I grabbed the dapper drake "alternate" install ISO and burned it from my Macbook Pro to a boot disk, and went through the entire install process on my Power Mac G4 400mhz "Yikes!". After install it starts right up to the boot prompt (is that what its called?), and i generally just hit "enter". after a flash to a white screen, it comes back to a black screen and gives me a few lines of errors, the first of which reads:

[code]...

Now the drive that linux is installed on was literally formatted right then by the installer, so i'm not sure what the issue may be. I have another drive on the disk with Mac OS 9 installed that is set as the master drive, but it seemed to find the linux drive no problem. during install i was informed it would write partions #3 and #4 to the drive.

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Make A Process Run At Startup

Mar 17, 2011

I am trying to make a file run at startup (e.g. runlevel 5). Here is what I done;

Copied file to /etc/init.d/rc5.d with these permissions:

-rwx------ 1 root root 274 Mar 17 08:33 noip2.sh

Contents of this file is:

Code:
#! /bin/sh
# . /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions # uncomment/modify for your killproc
case "$1" in
start)
echo "Starting noip2."

[Code]....

And the file this is supposed to run is in /usr/local/bin/noip2 with the permissions as:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 80431 Mar 17 08:16 noip2

However, this didn't worked for me. What can I do?

Edit: I can run shell file by invoking it with terminal. So there is no problem with the file

Fedora :: Startup Fails After Update - Unresolved Dependencies

Jan 10, 2011

I'm currently running Fedora 13 and updated the system in the morning with the help of 'yumex'. It complained about a couple of unresolved dependencies regarding new kernel and kmod-nvidia, so I manually skipped these packages for now (this happened before some time ago and worked then a couple of days later). I installed all other packages like firefox, thunderbird, kde, gnome pidgin etc. though.

I think I remember also to have seen some X11 stuff, but aren't quite sure (not updating often, so always getting quite a number of packages at once). The problem is that the system doesn't start any longer. The start screen shows the blue progress bar, then flickers and the system halts. I tried to start any of the last two older kernels but with the same result. When running in verbose mode I can see the following:
...
Checking for module nvidia.ko: [OK]
Enabling the nvidia driver: /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions: line 530: 1033 Segmentation fault "$@"
[FAILED]
...
There are a couple of more successful steps afterwards, but the system will never start. I tried a different runlevel by appending 'init 2' to the startup line, but wasn't able to login with any of my users. In despair I tried the link 'Updating to Fedora 13' from the boot menu, but it isn't actually offering an upgrade, but a complete re-install instead.

Ubuntu :: "GRUB _" Appears At Startup & Fails To Boot?

Mar 29, 2010

A couple weeks ago I installed Ubuntu Security and Recommended Updates that included an update to Linux Kernel 2.6.31-20. Upon installing these updates I was prompted to restart my computer for the changes to take effect. So I rebooted and encountered a Hyper Transport Sync Flood error each time I tried to boot, preventing me from booting into the OS.The above linked forum thread about the error suggested I manually adjust voltage settings in the BIOS to resolve the issue, so I gave it a try to no avail. Then I decided I would just reset my BIOS settings to the defaults (seeing as I hadn't edited that many settings to begin with). After doing so, I tried booting only to encounter a black screen with "GRUB _" printed on it.

I have encountered this issue before when I initially installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my system, but I'm not sure whether this occurrence is strictly BIOS setting related or if something effected my bootloader. (On a side note, resetting my BIOS settings to defaults seemed to, at least for now, eliminate the Hyper Transport Sync Flood error I was getting...and instead leave me with another problem.)I used this script created by meierfra. to provide info on my current boot setup, the results of which are displayed below.

Installation :: Fedora 9, 10, And Ubuntu 8.10 Freeze / "x Startup Fails To Load, Falling Back To Text Mode"?

Feb 16, 2009

just built a computer and wanted to try out some linux.

First off I burned the Fedora 10 x86_64 disk image (using disk utility on my mac at 4x speed then verified it) to a dvd. I start the install. "x startup fails to load, falling back to text mode" comes up. I use the text install then. It gets to the actual installation of the different packages then a black screen shows up with white text that's highlighted red (sometimes it's blue). It then freezes and I reboot. Sometimes it freezes at different points and with different messages, but the description above is what happens most often.

I try writing it at 1x speed and verifying. same thing.I try the Live CD. It freezes. Then I tried Fedora 9. same thing.

Next I go to Ubuntu 8.10.I try the regular install, but the orange loading bar freezes.I try the Live CD-like install. It runs!...but when i go to install, when it gets to the partitioning part, it freezes and becomes unresponsive.

Each time it froze I let it sit for about 10 minutes, just to make sure it is in fact frozen. I've tried these installs numerous times.

Print the 'msg' sent by child process inside the signal handler function 'sig_action_function' of the parent process I am getting some junk value when this line is executed

as we all know Process Scheduler does Process scheduling and its a process as well. I was just wondering that if this happens then the Process "Process Scheduler" should be a part of Process queue as well.

So if there are 5 process are there in Process queue & process scheduler is administrating them then since its also a process, once it puts a process under RUN state it should itself go inside queue because at one instant only one process can get executed on a processor. This is quite confusing for me. Please help me out. I tried to search on this but could not find any relevant topics.
