Attempting to install 10.04 Server on an IBM Series X 232 server. Its an old server with dual p III's, 4 small drives and an adaptec controller with a RAID 5 array. The server is currently running CentOS 5.5.
The CD I am installing from is known good. I verified it after I wrote it and verified it again during the install process. The system boots from the CD, I accept the defaults, then it fails at "adding additional components".
I tryed to update ubuntu server from 9.04 to 9.10 a few days ago, but do-release-upgrade failed with the following output.

Ubuntu Server 8.04. I have 2 servers in the same rack, on the same subnet, using the same DNS servers and build with the same media. On one of them the following command fails

On the other on the package was installed with out any problems. I have checked the /etc/apt/sources.list files and they are identical. Actually, it could not find mutt either.
I'm installing 10.4 x64 on a Dell PowerEdge R610 RAID 1 and the install goes fine until I have to reboot the finish it. On reboot after about a minute it gives the error

-check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
-check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
-Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)

what to do and my co-worker who knows a little more about Linux can't get it to let him check any of the above common problems.
We're tried letting GRUB manually configure itself at the end og the install before we reboot and we've also pointed it to /dev/sba partition which is what should be the boot partition.
EDIT: in the code tag it's ALERT! /dev/mapper/mysql(one)-root.... the L and 1 look the same
i'm trying to build a web server but I keep having a problem. Everything loads fine until I get to the "Install base system" part of the installation and it puts up a red screen warning me that the install has failed. My uncle gave me his ubuntu discs and even some different hard drives, but I keep getting the same problem at the same point of the installation. Here is the rundown of everything i did.

I was testing it out to run a raid 1 just to learn how to make a software raid array. its my first try at making a raid array. The first time i used ubuntu server 10.04 32bit and the system failed at the install base system point. I then used boot n nuke to clean the drives and tried 10.04 64bit. it failed at the same exact point. my uncle gave me 2 western digital 1.0TB hard drives and I tried again. I got the same results. At that point i gave all the hardware back to my uncle and he gave me a server board to try out because he bought it and hasnt touched it. so I built a second system.

I'm using the RAID1 setup, which is configured in the BIOS, as it is a HP Proliant server. i have 2 500GB hard drives configured in a mirror. when booting the install, it recognises this, and deals with it fine.
The problem is, when it gets to the section of installing the grub2 boot loader, it just stops and gives me the "ubuntu installer main menu" where if i select grub boot loader install it just loops back, and if i select LILO installer, it errors, saying an installation step failed.
It has the option to skip installing boot loader, but then, can i get it to boot a different way? can i boot manually into the server install and then install GRUB and hope it works? can i install grub1 rather than grub2?
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop fails and has been failing for the last two days, I installed both the lto and the 10.10 newest, starts out OK and runs for about 5 minutes then finishes with many 'failed to fetch [URL] size mismatch issues. This is the first one after many installs over the last two years. Is there something going on with the US servers? On closer examination of running sudo apt-get update it seems to be fine till it hits the pool directory on the server, lucid main and lucid-updates are fine, breaks when it goes past those.

All I wanted was to create a custom 404 error page...i read about how people edited .htaccess files to customize error pages, i tried and failed also, editing apache2.conf, I got lost and i dont wanna mess up everything and also, how you're supposed to not touch either of those as its not how it should be done and instead you need to edit httpd.conf and i did and FAILED! again...
Also how do I make it so that I can make subdomain(s) on my site? and wth is a name server and where do I get one?
I have two new Fedora 12 installs and both fail to complete the install and configuration of MySQL. When I run mysql_install_db I get:mysql_install_db --verbose Installing MySQL system tables... OK Filling help tables... OK
To start mysqld at boot time you have to copy support-files/mysql.server to the right place for your system
Please remember to set a password for the MySQL root User
To do so, start the server, then issue the following commands:
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password'
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h server.domain_name password 'new-password'

i don't understand this message. when i downloaded Server there was no message to save a second file for a second CD.

Installing support for Phototsmart 7150 on Ubuntu 10.10 server (no desktop).Installed 3.10.6 and 3.11.3a.
Installation hangs at the point where the printer is supposed to be detected (after the prompt to restart).At that point I break out with Ctrl-C.I then run hp-setup and select usb. That process complains about missing dbus file but prompts for the printing of a test page. The job begins but only a few lines are printed before the page is ejected, some more lines print, the page is ejected and so on.Have tried to uninstall with make uninstall but since there's no desktop I suppose the hp files are in the home folder?Please inform of proper uninstall for my case.I have also installed hplip via the webmin config. That install proceeds smoothly with no errors but print result is same.
Im having a major problem with mysql-server failing to install.The installation stoppes on "Running Transactions" (have tried waiting for 10 minutes). View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install openSuSE 11.4 on my IBM xSeries 440 Server and I am not having much success. I am getting to the welcome screen and installation menu screen fine, but when I select the 'install' option it loads the Linux kernel up to %100 and then just goes to a black screen from which the only escape is a reboot, the same thing happens when I select 'check installation media' and 'Firmware test'. I have tried the 'no ACPI' and 'safe settings' setting and still no luck.
I have successfully installed Windows server 2003 Enterprise edition on this machine so I know the hardware is ok.I suspect it could be a driver issue, but as I am very new to Linux and server installations I am grasping at straws.
I was going to set up an ubuntu server, but ran into some issues. When I try to install ubuntu server 9.10, it immediately goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor as soon as I press enter on the menu. I've tried pressing F6 and editing options - noapic, nolapic, irqpoll, vga=[something...] and nothing worked. I then downloaded a standard ubuntu desktop cd, and the livecd works, and I can successfully start the install!
I've heard that I should probably use the server install if I want to use this as a server (which I do; webserver for a group of people, website, ftp, ssh.) I've also heard that it's possible to just install everything needed overtop of an ubuntu desktop base. What should I do? Are there other things I should try to make the server install work? Or is it not worth the effort, and I should just go with a desktop install and then work from there? tasksel? (It's a Dell XPS, the graphics card is NVIDIA Geforce 9800 GT).
I have a Toshiba A205 S5804 laptop that had Vista Home Premium installed. Tried to install Centos 5 (2.6.18-8-el5) and when I went through the install process, X Server failed to start so I had to go thorough the command line install. Once the install completed, it only booted to console.
The default resolution for this laptop is 1280X800 but I dont know if that is why or not. if anyone has a clue about my issue, please let me know.. I really dont want to install windows.
I have a 14TB raid, file system is read-only and I am trying to run e2fsck -B -p -C -v -y /dev/sdb1, it goes through, but fails and says bad block/inode or fails to transfer, something like that.Is there a way I can get this to run successful, this is a production storage server, its critical.

I just want to know if there's an option to install VNC Server or something like that
on Ubuntu 10.04 so i can use it's GUI interface? Or it's not possible.
I have only SSH access that i got from the company i bought the server.
I am trying to upgrade RH9 to F10. I have downloaded dvd iso image i386. The SHA1 integrity check passes. The installer fails media check due to "errors". I did an independent verification of the DVD and zero errors found. Download was from Fedora's own torrent, so files should be verified anyway. If I bypass the media check I get the message : Running anaconda 11.4.1.62 the Fedora system installer - please wait.....

I'd like to install an IRC server on my website (it's hosted on another server location).I can log into the server side of things but am not sure how much control I have of installing applications. I'd like an IRC that's easy to install and easy to set-up. I logged into the cPanel page of the site and found this "general server information":

Unfortunately there's not an IRCd/server type of application available on the "Fantistico Deluxe" application installer feature.
So when I install 10.04 LTS server with all the defaults. ie root parted with lvm, I get a grub error. Apparently the install script at the end of the installation does not take into account that I might install ubuntu on a different drive.
Without LVM, I can get it to work. If I drop down to shell and mount the root drive, then run:
grub-install --root-directory=/ /dev/sdc And all is good. But I want LVM on my boot drive. Does anybody out there know of an easy way of doing this? This really should be a bug. But I'm too much a noob to know where to issue this.

excersise is a pxe install & utility server targeted to home users.This is particular interesting since many device sold now does not have an optical drive.We want to use a proxyDHcp since most people are using dhcp on a home router without pxe support. I do not include a sub structure 32bit/64bit, in this example all is 32bit.I have documented this since it was quite a struggle to put it together. im totally rubbish at command line. I have a small business server for home use, thats where i work from. I have Windows Small Business Server but a lot of the time its crap and am trying Linux. I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on a desktop and while im new to it im very impressed. I also have a MAC and i must say id rather have Ubuntu.
Now i want to use Linux Server but its all command line and i want the GUI. Iv tried to do this on Ubuntu Server 9.04 and no sucess at all , iv followed the instructions from other posts, (1) sudo apt-get update, (2) sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop and nothing works. Is there a way to install the GUI or is there a Linux Server with the GUI pre-installed?

I installed Server 11.04 and selected the options for the print server and file server. I would like to add a HP Officejet J3680 printer (USB connection) but cannot figure out how. On a remote computer running Ubuntu 11.04 desktop, I tried using the CUPS web interfce but I keep getting the "Unable to connect" message. I installed webmin on the same remote computer and tried installing it that way. That way, I selected "USB Printer 1" and used "generic postscript driver" This did not work. I do not know how to install a printer. I'll use command line on the server if necessary. How is this done?
