identify the right network structure for a data intensive website, built on LAMP. I'm thinking of a load balanced website, and that it should have a mysql master/slave setup server. I have configured a DNS server and DHCP server successfully on my ubuntu server, also a slave DNS server on Debian. I recently configured apache2 as part of LAMP on ubuntu server, but when I type my ServerName in the URL of my Win XP browser, I get this response: The webpage "mansour.net" cannot be found DNS error occurred. Server cannot be found. The link may be broken.
I have an A Record in my DNS zone file for mansour.net and have that as my ServerName in apache2 Definition file, but I don't know why it is not working. I am trying to learn to install and configure various servers on ubuntu.
Is there an easy way to transfer Webserver data from one ubuntu install to a new one? I know I'll need to get the stuff in /var/www and (somehow) the Mysql data, but are there files elsewhere to get? Or is there a better way than trying to copy all the various files?

The current server is on a Windows 2000 Server and I plan on replacing that. I wish to use Ubuntu server with Joomla for this purpose. This is my first venture into a purely command line interface, although I have played around with Ubuntu desktop in the past. My first question right now is: How do I log onto the Windows Network (active directory) from the ubuntu server. eth0 is reporting a valid internal IP on the network, so its been picked up okay.
Edit: I also want to assign a static internal IP address instead of grabbing from the DHCP. Edit2: Thinking about it, as the ubuntu server and windows server can ping each other do I even need to log into the domain? The server will only be serving web pages.
I'm running with Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop edition and I have LAMP server installed on the machine. I'm wanting to host my Automotive Detailing website that I'm almost done with off of that server. I have decals made up for my car and friends cars with the domain that I have registered on it. Now, can someone please tell me where and how to put the files for my website on the server and how to configure everything so I can get it up and running ASAP?!? System I am currently running an HP Pavillion laptop 500G HD, 6G RAM, dual boot Fedora 10 and Vista.
Questions: How should I partition HD to allow functionality of LAMP and to later transfer to a online webserver.
I have read several different rational on partitioning the disk. Do I really need a /tmp, /var? Currently I have / /boot, /swap, /home, /usr. Is this okay to start? Will it make transferring the project more difficult for "official use?
Should I not use the laptop at all and create a separate machine for this purpose only?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a mxn matric (which is my simplified way of saying it is RAM with bytes on it) Some of the locations on this metric is filled with some data and some places are empty. The mxn are very big numbers in size. I am trying to make a program so that if a system call wants to write some thing on empty locations on this mxn metric it should be able to do so without any problem. The thing which I want to understand or logic of a data structure is what data structure do you people feel should I be maintaining so that I can allocate the requested space immediately from the above mxn matric when some system call requests for some (k) number of locations from above metrics.
The logic initially I thought was to maintain a hashtable

but the problem with above logic is size of the pointers where I will be writing this problem is unsigned 64 byte.So to know location of one free byte if I am maintaining one pointer of type u64 this is not a feasible solution.
We want to fix our data folders structre in Samba, for example our folders would be like as Data/Group A/2010 /A.We want all our users can work only in folder A and no one can create any files in data, GroupA, 2010 folders. Similarly no one can delete these basic folders. However users can create further folders in A as required.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm pretty new to linux, and I'm facing a problem with an ext3 partition on an external hdd. I'm not sure whether the hdd is about to crash or not, however I've had a few problems accessing it in the past.
I have a second external hdd, the exact same drive, that has the exact same partition configuration, but holds different data. So, my question is; is it possible to backup the partition structure of the second working drive, and using this information to rewrite the partition structure of the failing hdd without damaging the data stored on that drive?
Options:A double linked list with fixed size character arrays. New nodes will be added when previous ones get filled. Dynamic arrays using realloc(). Linked list has the disadvantage of not having an O(1) search like an array but I think using realloc() will be more dangerous since it moves the whole block to a new location and if the new location is not big enough to hold the whole block, realloc fails !! this case will not occur with the linked list since its nodes are scattered.

What is the best and simplest way to compare two directory structures without actually comparing the data in files. This works fine:
diff -qr dir1 dir2
But it's really slow because it's comparing files too. Is there a switch for diff or another simple cli tool to do this?

On client1 files can be found in ~foobarfile1, ~foobarfile2, ~foo-avernfile3, ~foo avernfile4
On client2 files can be found in ~foo-barfile1, ~foo-barfile2, ~foo-tavernfile5, ~foo avernfile6
On client3 files can be found in ~file1, ~file3, ~file5, ~file7
I have access to one client and the server where I'd like all the files to be synced. I'm not worried about conflicts, just having a complete copy of all files[1-7]. Is there a way to cause RSYNC to remove the directory structure, so that I get something like:
client1% rsync files server:backup
client2% rsync files server:backup
etc
where at the destination all files will be checked against the destination set regardless of the source directory structure?
I'm setting up a svn server and would like users to share home dir. One problem is how to get sshd to identify the correct rsa key for the different users that shares the same .ssh folder. Will sshd even look for the key in a folder that isn't owned by the user trying to login?

i am running Ubuntu Lucid x64 as a fileserver that shares its files via SFTP, NFS and Samba. Currently the hard disks are configured to go to standby if they are not needed. This works perfectly as long as no one browses the shares or my HTPC is running: That one repeatedly looks through the shares for new music or movies. In other words my problem is that the disks are spinning up a lot more often than they should have to. Additionally the spin-up time delays the response time while browsing. Since the machine has a lot of unused RAM i want to tell the kernel that it should keep the directory structure in memory. That way the disks would not need to spin up every time someone browses through the directories.

I have a spreadsheet which I update regularly. This involves downloading CSV files from a couple of websites, copying data from those files into an OO.org spreadsheet and copying formulas within the spreadsheet (the number of rows of data varies, so when the number of rows of data increases, I need to copy more lines of formulas).
I'd like to automate this process, so that with a single command I can get the data from the websites and feed it into my spreadsheet without having to copy rows of formulas. Although I've done lots of numerically-oriented programming, I have no idea how to undertake this automation task. I don't even know which tools I need to learn to do it.
I have one of those ultra reliable Ubuntu servers in the corner that I never have to logon to because it never needs anything. I needed to check up on it today and my root password would not work. I am absolutely sure I did not forget my password and because I am the only Linux guy in the office I am sure some nimrod didn't get his fingers in the machine. I attempted to enter GRUB recovery mode but when I hit ESC it says something about no disk and goes into the booting process. I attempted to use a desktop version live CD, but the file structure is unreadable, I assume due to the security of the server system. Before I rebooted it the server worked fine, Apache and PHP were working away. Now the whole thing is a 50Lb boat anchor. How can I reset the password when I cannot enter GRUB menu or use a live CD?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a LAMP server running Ubuntu 8.04.03 Server edition running smoothly. Ive setup several websites on the server and all are ok, but I constantly have trouble with permissions. Everytime I setup a new domain to host, I setup a user specific to that domain. This allows SSH login specific to the domain. The problem I have is that every time I setup ownership in the virtual directories for the users they belong to, the settings don't seem to stay. Initially it seems to work ok, but when I install Joomla and setup the webspace, I always seem to have to login to the server itself to chmod the folders I need to have writable. I cant chmod properly from my FTP client which is weird. How to manage permissions?
Currently I am doing the following:

sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/{directory for the domain}
sudo chmod -R 775 {folder path I need to change}
This works for a while but as I add new things to Joomla and I want to modify the folders, I always have to go back and redo the chmod and the chown commands to get them where I want.
End of my first week after using ubuntu. I have setup LAMP for the purposes of my own coding education, place to run php and python scripts.
LAMP seems to be setup fine and working - I even got php5 working with it - however I am having a lot more trouble getting python to work in much the same manner.
I have downloaded the mod_python from [URL], unzipped it, tried to run ./configure and it said apxs was not installed.
After some reading it turns out I had to remove some apache-fork something and install apache-devfork (please forgive lack of exact names).
After doing this the ./configure on mod_python passed the "finding apxs" test but then said it can't find apache2 at /sbin/apache2 and again aborted the configure.

PHP in *.php files works in LAMP. PHP script within an *.html file is not executed. Does not display anything but view->source_code shows the <?php ... ?>
