I just installed LAMP on ubuntu 10.04using this method:ow i want to change the directory where my websites are; default is "/var/www" right. I have a partition using NTSF file system where i have a folder with all my websites. Can i configure LAMP to use this folder?

I have configured a DNS server and DHCP server successfully on my ubuntu server, also a slave DNS server on Debian. I recently configured apache2 as part of LAMP on ubuntu server, but when I type my ServerName in the URL of my Win XP browser, I get this response: The webpage "mansour.net" cannot be found DNS error occurred. Server cannot be found. The link may be broken.
I have an A Record in my DNS zone file for mansour.net and have that as my ServerName in apache2 Definition file, but I don't know why it is not working. I am trying to learn to install and configure various servers on ubuntu.

EDIT: I changed the permissions of the "folder" folder itself, I can access everything in that directory now but not any other folders in it. Do I really need to go through every folder every time and change the permissions?
it seems i have successfully installed LAMP.. i have a very basic page below that works when invoking "data()" but when i try to connect to mysql server (by removing the comments "//") it would just return a blank page.

My brother and I currently use a shared server, we both connect via SSH. I store files (via SFTP) on it as I only normally use a laptop. He uses to host his own personal files and also a public website promoting his photography business. I am interested in cryptography and security and have restricted our SSH connections to require keys and use encfs to encrypt my personal folder. Comments on this are welcome.
I am struggling to work out how to protect his home folder without preventing access to his site. Normal methods prevent access entirely or require the web browser to enter a password (no good for promotion). I would like to prevent both alien users and myself from accessing his home folder but still allow his website to be functional from within this area of restricted access. Both the site and his personal files need to be protected.
In my website, I'm putting shared files in a "/global" folder. Both "styles.css" and "library.php" are in this global folder. HTML code seems to be working ok - the following bit works great to pick up a style sheet:

I receive a "failed to open stream: No such file or directory" error.Spelling out the entire full path works, like so:

But this type of code is no good as I may change servers in the future. I have my "DocumentRoot" set correctly in my sites-available file. It seems as if PHP is ignoring it. Is there a config file someplace (htaccess? Local php.ini?) where I should update my root directory for this site only? Or am I following bad form and there's a better way to do this? Relative paths don't seem like the answer here though...
I'm running with Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop edition and I have LAMP server installed on the machine. I'm wanting to host my Automotive Detailing website that I'm almost done with off of that server. I have decals made up for my car and friends cars with the domain that I have registered on it. Now, can someone please tell me where and how to put the files for my website on the server and how to configure everything so I can get it up and running ASAP?!? I'm fairly new at this Ubuntu and what not so I need a detailed tutorial

System I am currently running an HP Pavillion laptop 500G HD, 6G RAM, dual boot Fedora 10 and Vista.
Questions: How should I partition HD to allow functionality of LAMP and to later transfer to a online webserver.
I have read several different rational on partitioning the disk. Do I really need a /tmp, /var? Currently I have / /boot, /swap, /home, /usr. Is this okay to start? Will it make transferring the project more difficult for "official use?
Should I not use the laptop at all and create a separate machine for this purpose only?

Seems to work fine, I've installed the Virtual Machine manager, when I go to create my Virtual Machine, I see the the image is automatically created in /var/lib/libvirt/images. I have newly installed Ubuntu server 9.10 in my server machine.And it has tomcat6 in itself.My friend have built a Java software in Fedora ,and he wants to move it to the new server.But problem is the directory structure is different between two systems.He has to either change his directory setting in his software or change the default tomcat6 ROOT directory. But I have not find any configuration file can do this job(change the tomcat default ROOT directory ).

I switched to Linux recently to start learning PHP and MySQL, and used this video on ..... to learn how to install all the desired packages and stuff[URL]... Everything got installed correctly up until 6:48, at the time I didn't know that you need to press space bar to get the star in the box to select the desired configuration, thusly causing myPhpAdmin not to be installed correctly and localhost/myphpadmin not showing up.
So after trying to reinstall it, and then removing all the packages and re installing, this specific set up for the db-config will not show up. Is there a way to completely remove all of these packages and start fresh?
I also tried installing the LAMP server thing, but also myphpadmin fails to get installed properly.
Lamp stands for (linux apache mysql php).. I dont know how to installed it from terminal.

(Images which are very small in size like less then 5 kb is loading though, like small icons, smileys...)Tried clearing cache, different browsers, different image formats.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI created LAMP server with a wordpress site. I created a sites-available file for the wordpress file pointing to the wordpress directory. Within my server it goes to the site properly. However I also made this server a DNS server, had another test pc use it as a DNS server and it only got the default apache page unless I added /wordpress to the url which makes it point to the directory within /var/www/ that it belongs, but then the wordpress links don't work and this is not what I want it to do anyway. I do not understand why it is working properly internally but not externally. It makes me think maybe the sites-available file is not allowing outside access appropriate permission to use it or something. Can somebody please point me in the right direction I have been working on this for weeks and I am starting to get really frustrated with it. Tell me what config files can help you figure out my issue. Also I eliminated the default index.html file so it wouldn't use it, then placed the index.php file from wordpress in /var/www/ root but in that configuration it doesn't load anything by default but will still work if you point to /wordpress. I believe I have to make some change to my apache2 configs to allow outside PCs to be pointed to the right root directory for the virtual host like is being done internally, I just don't know where to start.

I currently have a LAMP server running with multiple virtual hosts configured. I have one virtual host with a sub directory that contains pdf news letters.do not want the directory browsable and tried putting an index.php file that re-directshe user to the root directory but when I go to the [web address]/[directory name] in any browser I see the contents of the folder listed.
Currently the news letter list is drawn from a database table and displayed as links on a page in the root directory. The links point to the file name in the sub directory. How do I block users from going to that sub directory and seeinge contents of that directory listed? Would I add another <directory> statement in the vhosts.conf file? If so how would I structure that directive?
