Programming :: Data Structure For Implementing A Text Editor?

Options:A double linked list with fixed size character arrays. New nodes will be added when previous ones get filled. Dynamic arrays using realloc(). Linked list has the disadvantage of not having an O(1) search like an array but I think using realloc() will be more dangerous since it moves the whole block to a new location and if the new location is not big enough to hold the whole block, realloc fails !! this case will not occur with the linked list since its nodes are scattered.

I am writting a program that reads a text file (music.txt) & stores it in a Data Structure. I am a novice learning over the internet so I this is something I have never done. How do I do this?
Quote:
Write a program that reads the data from the music.txt file and store it in a data structure. To implement this data structure you must use an array of songs and each song must be represented by a struct with appropriate fields. So far all I can do is open to file to read it (very simple I know) but so far is it correct?
Code:
#include <iostream>
#include <fstream>
#include <strstream>
[code]....

I have a mxn matric (which is my simplified way of saying it is RAM with bytes on it) Some of the locations on this metric is filled with some data and some places are empty. The mxn are very big numbers in size. I am trying to make a program so that if a system call wants to write some thing on empty locations on this mxn metric it should be able to do so without any problem. The thing which I want to understand or logic of a data structure is what data structure do you people feel should I be maintaining so that I can allocate the requested space immediately from the above mxn matric when some system call requests for some (k) number of locations from above metrics.
The logic initially I thought was to maintain a hashtable
1bytes requested----------> location 1,location 2,location 3.........location n
2bytes requested----------> location 1,location 2,location 3.........location n
3bytes requested----------> location 1,location 2,location 3.........location n
[code]....
but the problem with above logic is size of the pointers where I will be writing this problem is unsigned 64 byte.So to know location of one free byte if I am maintaining one pointer of type u64 this is not a feasible solution.

Is it possible to create a text based menu layout in bash were it is possible to browse through. The menu list should look something like this:
----------------------------------------
user: root
colour: blue
number: 4
animal: dog
----------------------------------------
At the start the cursor should blink at the r from root so that text can be entered. When pressing the enter the cursor should go to the b from blue and so on. the imported thing is that all the text is visible also beyond the position from the cursor.

i was wondering if in all the editors/tools in linux, if there was a prog that can extract a portion of a text file, giving it a starting line of say o as the first character on a line of say o35565 oxxxxx then when it finds the next line down the file with the same thing oxxxxwhatever
it could take those lines and all the lines between them and save it to another file? i dont know if you call this parsing? or what.

On windows I really only used Notepad++ as my text editor, it had two features that I loved.What I need to accomplish is what I would do with Notepad++ column editor.I could have like 100 lines, and place the cursor at a column, and goto edit>column editor, and I could insert an incrementing number. (I could also pad the incrementing number with 0s, this was GREAT for making batch files among other things.)So each line at that column had a number higher than the previous line.The other feature that I used sometimes was a search/replace with regex patterns.Does anyone know of an editor that has those features for linux? I am mostly after the column editor insert feature but if you know of one with both features that would rock.

Is there a simple text editor for Linux that will let you color or highlight text on demand? Something like gedit or leafpad with color? I know I can probably do this with vi or emacs, but I'm looking for something simple, need not be feature rich.

I have created a file using open() and written data to it. Data appears as normal characters in the file. How to save these characters in a binary format in that file using C language? Here I mean that the characters should be actually stored as 0 and 1. Do I have to convert the whole data using some function or there is some standard way to do it in Linux?

I was trying to install GTK+-2.8.20, so I installed it's necessary dependencies in this order:
pkg-config-0.23
glib-2.20.4
pango-1.24.4
jpeg library
tiff library
cairo
And I was about to install the last dependency: ATK (Accessability Toolkit).I opened the Archive Manager to extract the "atk-1.26.0.tar.gz" file (yes, I'm still switching from Windows so I'm fond of GUI), but I noticed all the text in that window was boxes, like the □ type box for every letter of text.So instead I thought it wouldn't be a big deal, because the terminal and regular windows weren't screwed up.I opened a text file in gedit (reference to commands in terminal, such as how to extract files via terminal), but yet again all of the text was □-like boxes.

I need a loop that pulls out the user name into a variable and then pulls out the LastUpdate field into another variable so I can then perform a comparison against the last update field. Requirements are AIX tools including AWK, SED and Perl I am writing a script to check AIX users password expiration dates and if they are within the alerting period (ie. 7 days etc) it will email the user. I will release the full script into the public domain once completed. The text file I want to parse is formatted like:
Code:
colettel:
password = XSON0m4SdIQDw
lastupdate = 1260829398

I'm pretty new to linux, and I'm facing a problem with an ext3 partition on an external hdd. I'm not sure whether the hdd is about to crash or not, however I've had a few problems accessing it in the past.
I have a second external hdd, the exact same drive, that has the exact same partition configuration, but holds different data. So, my question is; is it possible to backup the partition structure of the second working drive, and using this information to rewrite the partition structure of the failing hdd without damaging the data stored on that drive?

What is the best and simplest way to compare two directory structures without actually comparing the data in files. This works fine:
diff -qr dir1 dir2
But it's really slow because it's comparing files too. Is there a switch for diff or another simple cli tool to do this?

I'm interested in writing a generational garbage collector in C++. This is for a Python-like programming language project. I have used Boehm's garbage collector before, but I'm worried that it will have noticeable pause times (unacceptable for interactive programs). Since I can't really find any other C++ established GCs out there, I have been thinking of simply writing my own.
However, there are two essential ingredients I need for this:
- Some kind of write barrier mechanism that will notify my collector when something is written to a part of the heap
- A way for me to know the addresses and sizes of the stack, heap and global storage (the root sets)
how to implement write barriers (and how to get the stack, heap and global storage information) on the Linux platform? As an alternative, if you know of C++ GCs other than Boehm, I would also be interested.

Though I have developed some web applications (automation tools) using PHP which have been primarily meant for Intranet (within the organizations I have worked for), I have paid little attention to SEO (it was not required until now). But now I want to understand how do we go about implementing SEO and where do we fit this mechanism in a system / website?
Do we need any other tools or learn some specific programming /scripting language to achieve it?Will implementing a good SEO yield identical results irrespective of what search engine (be it Google or Yahoo!) is being used by users?

implementing hamming code in c: Calculating the Hamming Code The key to the Hamming Code is the use of extra parity bits to allow the identification of a single error. Create the code word as follows:
Mark all bit positions that are powers of two as parity bits. (positions 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, etc.)
All other bit positions are for the data to be encoded. (positions 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, etc.)

identify the right network structure for a data intensive website, built on LAMP. I'm thinking of a load balanced website, and that it should have a mysql master/slave setup server. I'm no expert in this area, so any online resources are welcome. You can check out the website [URL] - but it will have 10 million items once the hardware can support it.

I run Wheezy Xfce 64-bit. I went through the Synaptic listings and added Python 3.3.2 and Tkinter for it, and that works fine; but for some reason PyGtk is available only for Python 2.7, not for Python 3.3, unless I'm just using the wrong way to try to find it. Is there a PyGtk available for Python 3.3 in Wheezy, and, if so, how do I install it and then import it once it's installed?

I need to implement AIDE on my client machines. The builds on these machine are different, so each workstation will have its own specific db generated through running AIDE initially. It is not good practice to just leave the db on the machine, since an "attacker" would be able to view this information. However, at the same time I do not want to pull back over 100 different aide db's to the ftp server and have an update pull each specifically every time I need to run the check. The plan is to leave the db on the client machine, but encrypt it (using public/private keys). I need to be able to encrypt the file on the client machine. I will use a cron on the client to pull an update (from my ftp server) that runs AIDE. This update needs to be able to decrypt the file, use it running AIDE, then re-encrypt the file on the client.

I've already used line split stuff to transform my data into something like this in a text file:
Code:
['1', '1', '3', '20.7505207']
['2', '1', '3', '23.0488319']
['3', '1', '3', '-1.5768747']
['4', '1', '3', '-26.4772491']
[code]....
How can I get this on a python program so I can manipulate it as an array?
