Recently I had to login to OS 11.3 via tty, but was unable to. Tty screen was flooded with syslog output. Instead of outputting info only on tty10 it was throwing it on every tty (1-6), I switched to.
How to fix this behaviour and restrict syslog output only to tty10?
I noticed in my system that my root partition is getting full. I found a lot of old compacted syslogfiles. Had a look at etc/sysconfig editor eg cron but could not find a setting which allows to delete files older than a month. Where and how could I influence this ? I deleted manually all syslog files older than a month. Approx 6GB
I am running a headless Ubuntu 10.04 server with the 2.6.32-28-generic kernel. For what I can figure out no single direct cause I get a high load average and the following syslog output at random intervals. Generally the load average will drop back down to normal however the kernel errors will still continue What little I have been able to find has pointed to memory issues. I am not totaly convinced this is the cause as the server will be showing >50% free when the errors are happening.
I am looking for an open source syslog server which accumulate the each and every log of Windows, Solaris, Linux and network devices. Currently I am using Syslog-ng which is not fulfiling my requirement in Windows clients, as I need the logs of every action which user performed after logon.
wants to remove everything else that (presumably) has syslog as a dependency. how do I replace the dependency on syslog with a dependency on syslog-ng?
What i'm trying to accomplish seems rather silly but is needed for my little project here.
I'm using OpenSuSE 11.2 as a media center PC and need it to login automatically(console not X). That one i accomplished without problems.
However, after login i can see all the info about the services that were started and that needs to "go away".
One could do a "clear" in the .bash_rc and or .bash_profile but it will still show the login prompt which i don't want to see either (i don't even want to see the blinking cursor as well).
Question: How do i accomplish that so that the login console shows only the "splash screen" without any output of the kernel,rc.status nor the "issue-file"... just a plain blank screen ?
I'm flooded with online information and am looking for some concise advice For all of you who are familiar with Avidemux: The program offers an abundance of video output formats (MPEG-2, MPEG-4.AVC, MPEG-4.ASP (lavc), MPEG-4 (xvid), H.263). Which format would you recommend for storing home videos, with regard to (a) being able to view them easily on different PC platforms, and to (b) being able to view them still in n > 5 years from now?
As you will see from the screenshot, I am getting a strange display on all ext4 partitions in gparted - but only when the version of gparted installed in opensuse is used. The version is 0.8.0-1.2.As displayed in the screenshot, I have checked that e2fsprogs is installed. It is, and the version is 41+ (ie 1.41.14-5.1)I do not get the triangles displayed for ext4 partitions when I use gparted from within Ubuntu or Fedora - just opensuse.fsck has been run several times and completes quickly, reporting that the file system is clean, on all ext4 partitions.
Does anybody know if with OpenSUSE 11.2 something changed in the way the users are logged in to X? I am running an application which uses notify-send command to send pop ups and it is not working properly, but it works in OpenSUSE 11.1, 11.0, 10.x, The same goes for SLED and SLES, all versions. This is what I have found so far. Before the 'who' output was
Code: $ foo@bar:~/Desktop> who foo :0 2010-01-26 14:40
I just finished installing 11.4 64bit. Kaffeine and Amarok both produce sound, but VLC does not. When I invoke vlc [URL]. I can see the name of the album playing but there is silence. I ran the mmcheck script.
I just installed a OpenSuse 11.4 box. Now when I do a 'ls -l' I see the date format different than on all my other boxes even though I have identical regional settings. Is there a way (env var) to control this behaviour ?
Running 10.10 and win 7 on my HP dv6-2150us laptop and I'm having a few issues.
First how do I get HDMI audio output to my TV? I think I have just a integrated Intel graphics card. It works fine in windows but I can't seem to get it to work in Ubuntu. I tried searching but couldn't find anything pertaining to this issue.
I noticed when running "ps -ef" that there are a bunch of processes listed with brackets. ie "[process]". Some of them appear to be daemons and others look more like kernel modules? I haven't found a program directly associated with them and was hoping somebody could clarify this for me?
Also, if I run a search of the file system with sudo or as root, there is a directory in my home that returns a permission denied. I understand permissions but shouldn't operations as root be able to do/access anything on the system?
I have an sony vaio laptop and the screen is pretty small so i have connect to tv with a HDMI cable but opensuse doesnt show on the tv. How do i output either the same screen or an extended desktop ?
I listen to some voice mail messages over the web. Firefox downloads the message as a ".wav" file, and then invokes amarok to play it.What I have been noticing, is that amarok seems to cut the message short. As an additional test, today after playing a message on amarok, I tried playing the same message with kaffeine. There was significantly more to the message when played on kaffeine. The particular message ended with the phone number I should call back (if I wanted to). None of that ending sentence showed in the amarok playback
I would like to plug my guitar on my pc and hear what I'm playing out of my headphones. I have not found out yet how I can enable direct output. Neither with Line-In, nor Mic-Input worked. Has anyone an idea how to enable it? KMix does not provide such a function as far as I know
I have a StarTech USB audio adapter which I have been unable to get output from in Suse. Pavucontrol allows me to adjust the output to this device, and even shows some signal when playing media. However, no output makes it to the headset/speaker jack of the USB device. There does not appear to be any issues with playing media to the internal sound card & speakers of the computer. I booted up a Live Ubuntu disk, the device was recognized, and output made it with no problem. This leads me to discount a hardware problem. I'm running Suse 11.4 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T420s.
Is there a way VLC to use vdpau as video output? Mplayer and Gnomemplayer can use it and the video playback uses as little as 2-4 % CPU power even on 1080p movies. Xorg and Kwin continue to use pretty much CPU power in video playback process , I suppose there is no way to limit them or there is ?
Open Suse 11.4 86x64, KDE4-4.5.6, NVidia 275.xxx.xxx
The problem is strange for me, I have fresh installed openSUSE 11.3 after that my fortran codes using gfortran compiler gives different output. The same codes gives correct values in windows but I use linux for programming.
I am sure that this is very simple but I have installed sound juicer and the gstreamer plug ins. The problem is i still cannot select MP3 as an output output option
I don't know anything about ubuntu. Could you guys help me out. I'm pretty knowledgeable with windows if you guys need a printout of something let me know. My friends getting really frustrated about this. Help!!i
So here's the situation. He plugs his audio jack into his computer and then into the speakers but it still plays from the computer speakers.
I finally got audio working on my ubuntu 9.10 desktop... now I am having sound issues watching movies from a network share. The sound device continually randomly changes to "dummy output device" and then there is no sound output. The sound icon dissapears on the toolbar. To get it back and audio to start working I have to $sudo alsa force-reloadIt seems to happen everytime there is a network delay, the movie will stop for a second and then when it plays the sound is gone
I needed for the first time to do a slideshow of some pictures, I thought it would be a easy thing but now I have two days trying to do it. I downloaded Manslide, I spent about two hours working on it doing the slides but at end of the render process it do not produce any output. Then I discover that Manslide now is SMILE that is in Packman repo. I spent another two hours making again my slideshow but at the end it didn't produce the output video file. I have all the dependencies, I switch all of them to Packman rpms.
If you install Smile (video slideshow creator) from Packman repository, you will probably find out that it doesn't produce any output file. This project is most probably dead, homepage is 404 and it's practically impossible to get any information about this program. Therefore it took me 3 exhausting hours to get it working Here is the solution: There is a missing fake.pl file, so you have to copy it to the right place, which is /opt/smile (for OpenSuse, for other distros it could be elsewhere, for example /usr/bin). You can obtain this file from the source package but as it is very small I post it right here to spare your time:
[Code].....
So create a new file /opt/smile/fake.pl and copy these lines into it. Btw. the original file from the source doesn't have the first line, but according to the tip from different forum it is supposed to be here. If Smile still doesn't work you might try to add some extra permission to fake.pl, something like chmod 755 /opt/smile/fake. And if it is still not working check the log file ~/.logsmile.txt This file is by the way also impossible to find, there is no sign of him in the documentation.
