Ubuntu Servers :: KVM Does Not Work With Kernel 2.6.32-22/x64

Jun 3, 2010

Today, after upgrading kernel to version 2.6.32-22 (linux-image-2.6.32-22-server) all my KVM guests stopped working. I could not reach the guests over (bridged) network or connnect to the guests with virt-mangager (well, I could but all i could see was black screen). I was able to reproduce the issue on my second server.

Reverting to kernel 2.6.32-21 resolved the issue.

Ubuntu Installation :: ATI Driver And New Kernel 2.6.35 Kernel - No Longer Work

Nov 24, 2010

With the recent upgrade kernel, my ATI driver can no longer work. After upgrading to the new kernel, upon reboot I would get stuck at the "checking battery status" and can't boot into kubuntu.

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 64 on intel i5 with radeon hd 4870.

So I thought I messed something up since I was fooling around with conky script the day before. I did a clean install of kubuntu 10.10 64 and reset all my settings and my files. At this point, everything works smoothly and I can reboot multiple times without a problem.

I proceeded to install the Radeon catalyst driver following the documentation, which worked perfectly for me on the previous kernel. After rebooting, I can no longer get pass the "checking battery state" black screen. I had to boot into safe book, uninstall all fglrx and also delete xorg.conf to be able to boot back in normally.

Fedora Installation :: Making A Kernel Patch Work With F11 Kernel?

Jun 12, 2009

there is an issue with the way the Linux Kernel addresses memory by default and the graphic drivers for my Asus G1Sn. I have a patch that I had compiled against a custom kernel for 2.6.27.xx how ever it does not work with the latest kernel in Fedora 11. It is beyond me to rewrite the patch to work with a different kernel.

Ubuntu Servers :: Get Sobdomains To Work Fine On A Test Mache, But Domain/site To Work Due To Lack Of DNS Support At The Moment?

Feb 6, 2011

I'm not to sure this is the place I should post this, but couldn't find any place for it to fit. So here is the deal..I am running 10.10 with the standard LAMP setup. I am running a drupal 7 site no problems. What I need to do is run a multi site sub directory. (domain.com/newsite). So far the best I can do is get a directory index of the second site (domain.com/newsite), but cant run the installer. (I did the symbolic link to the doc root of the drupal install.)If I type in the url domain.com/newsite/install.php I get not found. I placed an index.html test page and it renders fine. I think I'm close but just not there yet.

Any ideas from anyone? I can get Sobdomains to work fine on a test mache, but sadly I need the domain/site to work due to lack of DNS support at the moment. I tried to get some info from the drupal forum, but everything always points to subdomin setups. I also posted over there, but it seems like the forums have very little support and are a bit on the slow side.

Ubuntu Servers :: No Servers Work Unless Logged In?

Feb 5, 2011

I have the system setup and working, but I want to put it in a corner and forget about it. Problem is, nothing starts running unless I'm logged in. And if I log out, everything stops again. It's running a LAMP server and has VNC and SSH servers as well. I want all of that to start without having to log in. That way I can remote reboot without worries and connect and login with either VNC or SSH.Everything seems to have an entry in /etc/init.dIs the way it's acting normal behavior? It's a fresh install, then I installed everything I needed from the repos.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading To 2.6.35 Kernel Which Didn't Work Either?

Aug 26, 2010

Wow -everything works with alpha-3 version with a fresh install. Sound, wireless modem, processor speed scaling, sound controls, touch pad, all cores running, power management, battery, fans, etc. NVidia driver is also working. I tried multiple other distro installs - opensuse, Fedora, and ubuntu 10.04 - none worked. Also tried upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 which didn't work either. also tried upgrading to 2.6.35 kernel which didn't work either.

I'm running a toshiba satellite a505-6030 with an i7 core, nvidia graphics gforce 310M. i didn't have to pass any arguments to grub either . First boot seemed to stall, rebooted machine, and it's been working perfectly since.

i've been trying and trying to get my video card set up in ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10 (it is an ati mobility radeon 7500), I first posted about it here [URL].. and since then nothing has changed. What I would really like to know is why does it work in kernel 2.6.31 but not in anything later. Right now im running arch on my secondary hard drive with kernel 2.6.31 and everything runs great, full open gl, 3d accel etc but when I upgrade to a newer kernel (no matter what distro) my video does not work. Has there been any improvements on this? It was a problem with KMS i kind of found it by accident, its all working now

Ubuntu Servers :: SSH Freezing After Kernel Update ?

Dec 15, 2010

I updated the kernel on a ubuntu machine yesterday. No problems so far. But after rebooting I couldn't login via SSH anymore. The session freezes right after authentication. Doesn't matter wether its pubkey or keyboard-interactive.

I couldn't find any hints so far. auth.log does not seem to show any warnings/errors.

Strange thing is: I'm able to log in via SFTP (SCP). I can even use WinSCP to open a "unix like" shell, but it only works for basic commands.

Here is the output of auth.log, when logging in via SFTP/SCP

Code:

This is the output when trying to open a real ssh session:

Code:

Ubuntu Servers :: Upgrading Kernel Without Reboot

Dec 16, 2010

I have an Ubuntu 8.04 server running 2.6.24-23-server. I have a godaddy account and I am trying to upgrade my os version to 10.04, which requires a kernel upgrade. I have tried ksplice but kernel 2.6.24-23-server is not supported. I have heard about screen sessions but I have not found it possible to reboot one screen while having the other screen stay persistent if it is possible. So the main question is how to update Ubunut 8.04 to Ubuntu 10.04 with out rebooting the entire server? Rebooting is completely not an option at the moment.

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Configure Kernel For A Many-processor Machine

I have Ubuntu 10.10 Server installed on a 32 core machine(quad AMD Magny Cours 6128 ), and I was wondering what kernel configuration would optimize its performance? So far, I have only found the obvious configurations that are checked off:

1) Processor type and features ---> Support for big SMP systems with more than 8 CPUs
2) Processor type and features ---> Maximum num of CPUs
3) Multi-core scheduler support

Is there anything else I should consider?I plan on running multi-threaded programs with moderate amount of inter-processor communication, shouldn't there be some options related to the shared memory?

Ubuntu Servers :: Installs Of The GUI's Somehow Change To The Desktop Kernel?

Apr 4, 2011

In Ubuntu Server 10.04, the kernel naming convention went sort of like "vmlinuz-2.6.32.21-server" for servers and "vmlinuz-2.6.32.21-generic" for desktops... Kernel numbers changing for the kernel version, but last signifying whether it was a desktop or a server version of the kernel... Right? At least as much as I've noticed with my 64bit installs.

I recently got a 32bit test server up on Ubuntu 10.10 and I think I'm either confused, maybe things might be different in 10.10 versions or my prior assumptions were wrong? On this test machine, I installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 32bit. After the install, I upgraded packages, then I installed kubuntu-desktop, xubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-desktop (in that order). I know the implied resource and security issues-- but this was a test machine to work something out. My observation on this machine is that I cannot find a kernel image on it with "...-server". All the versions of kernel images are "...-generic" All my previous installs of Ubuntu Server have been 64bit installs... and I just assumed all server kernels had "...-server" as the naming convention.

- Is this different for 10.10?
- Is this a difference in the 32bit server/64bit server kernel?
- Did my installs of the GUI's somehow change to the desktop kernel? If so, all my testing in now invalidated- as I'm supposed to be testing on the "server kernel."

Ubuntu Servers :: Force Kernel Selection Time-out?

Aug 7, 2011

I have set the kernel selection time out to 3 seconds. However, sometimes it just hangs indefinitely on the kernel selection screen until I manually select the kernel. This is bad news since it is a VM started up from a script and _has_ to start automatically. The VM is a re-constructed cloud backup made by rsync and re-running grub.

Is there any way to force Ubuntu to NEVER, under any circumstances, not time out on kernel selection.
