I can't share my /var/www folder on this machine - it worked fine on my Desktop, it just asked me to install the samba windows something.
What's going wrong with this.

I do not have a file /etc/init.d/samba Has this been replaced by /etc/init.d/smbd ?
Also, I have a /var/lib/samba/usershares folder but it is empty. Is there supposed to be something inside?
I have been having off and on issues with my samba file shares. I am sharing a NTFS formated hard drive where the mount point is in my home directory, as well as a printer connected via USB. I am to the point where printing works (using it as an ipp print share, samba is configured for it, but I don't know if it works or not), and I can access the shared folder from Windows, but I can't access the shared folder from any Ubuntu machine. In this post I will give a quick solution for a possible problem with sharing a folder in Fedora 15.I had to spend some time for research and frustration so, hopefully this post will save you from both. I'm having some trouble mounting a Samba share on my two Ubuntu machines. The Samba share is setup so that all files are readable and writable by everyone (it's only accessible via the local network). When I create a new folder on the share with either of my Ubuntu machines, the folder becomes non-writable by anyone ie. I can't place anything into the folder. I think the problem is with the way I'm mounting the share on my Ubuntu machines. If I go to the share using smb://192.168.1.160 in a file browser, I can create new folders which are readable and writable by everyone. But, if I create the new folder where it's mounted at /mnt/backup, no-one can modify or change it.

I have two shares
1. //home/test - Which I can see and access with no problems (can't write to it though even though I set the share as writable?, but, I can read from it). This is available to everyone. My windows terminal can see this folder and access it. This is on my main 80GB internal drive /dev/sda1.
2. //media/SG1500GB/Music. I set this up for everyone full access and I can see it at all my Windows machines but,I can't get into the folder. Windows keeps giving me an error stating network path not found.I also try to access it via the Nautilus (Places/Network/system/music) and get an error message "unable to mount location, Failed to mount windows share". This drive is mounted per the disk utility.
I've been trying to share a folder with samba. This folder is the decrypted version of an encfs encrypted folder. Mounting the decrypted folder on the server is done automatically on login using gnome-encfs. Exposing the folder locally works like a charm. Now where I get stuck is trying to access the samba share from a client (even with smbclient on the server itself). I can see the share with smbclient -L:

The original poster is unable to access his Samba shares. The original poster does not understand why and seems to think that it is configured correctly. Other posters have added suggestions about smbpasswd and testparm to check for correct syntax. Presumably, these things have not yet solved the problem, since the OP has not returned to say the problem is solved, though you linking to one of the first links that would appear in a google search for redhat and samba was no doubt wildly and extraordinarily helpful.
So, I had an idea. I recognized that, in a crazy plan to make a functional OS, the authors of Linux had allowed more than one binary to execute simultaneously. This means, that SELinux and samba can both run at the same time. Now, stay with me here - if SELinux is not configured to allow permissions for the samba user on the Samba share.... "permission denied" log errors can occur in Samba. Now, that sounds familiar for some reason. Hmmm... oh, yeah! That was what the original poster mentioned! I want to share folder in fedora 12 so that any windows user can access my folder (without modifying its content) and there should be no password to be entered by the windows user. I tried samba gui but the folder does not open using windows.

I have two computers running Ubuntu 9.10, both have one shared folder. These were set up via Nautilus.
On computer 1 I can see and use the shared folder of computer 2 just fine.
On computer 2 I can NOT see the shared folder of computer 1 anymore since recently. I has worked in the past.
Some more information: the name of computer 1 is "daniel", the share name is "gedeeld". So the address of the shared folder of computer 1 would be smb://daniel/gedeeld/
Opening this address in Nautilus works fine on computer 1 (that shares the folder), but results in an error on computer 2.

i have an old desktop that i have decided to use as a central point for localhost/website files. I have 2 laptops, a ubuntu and vista, and i want them both to be able to see the public_html folder on my desktop, and be able to create/update folders and files.
I have set up the samba sharing and that's working fine, but when i create folders using my laptop, they are not writeable to the desktop or other laptop because my laptop is the creator. Is there a way that I can set it so that whenever folders/files are created from either laptop, they have full permissions?
I'm evaluating OpenSUSE and have installed 11.3 with Gnome (from the latest liveCD) and have it all running fine in a VM at the moment. We are looking at using it for an iSCSI/NFS/Samba server and have it allrunning and it is all configurable from Yast. However I can't seem to get Nautilus to play ball and allow sharing of Samba/NFS shares under folder properties (I'm fairly positive I've done this fine in Ubuntu). All I ever get is Usershare/Gnome sharing (which I believe is Webdav).
I must say I am so impressed with OpenSUSE, the partition manager is just a dream to use and everything works really well it would just be really nice to be able to share NFS/Samaba shares from the file manager. I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.
i did install and configure samba buy google tutorials. I can ping the centos box from windows but cannt access folder which is on centos. I can ping the machine.

So far, I managed to set up two network adapters (one NAT and one host-only) and to install Samba on the Linux guest, but I have the following questions now: What do I need to type in samba.conf to share a folder from the Linux guest? (the tutorial provided in one of the links above only explains how to share home directories) Are there any Samba commands that I need to run on the guest to enable sharing? How do I make sure that these folders are only available to the host OS and not on the Internet? Once the Linux guest is setup, how do I access each of the individual shared folders from the Windows host? I read that I need to mount a drive on Windows to do this, but do I use Samba logins, or Linux logins, also do I use localhost? or do I need to set up an IP for this?
I'm working on sharing a user's home folder using the username and password of the user's lLnux account. I noticed that home folder sharing is quite easy as I just need to change the smb.conf file to enable it. However I can't seem to login anyway. It seems that Samba keeps its own records of username and passwords. Is there a way that I can map/sync the Linux users' usernames and passwords automatically to Samba? The end result should be that whenever I add a new user or a user changes his/her Linux login password,Samba automatically changes its password as well.

After label the mount folder as httpd_sys_content_t the Apache web server working in correct way (duno much but at least it can index files and excute some php code so) then the troll come in : if some file was created by my ubuntu (personal comp) then the file would be listed in Apache virtualhost correctly.
But if I'm ssh to CentOS server goto /media/www which was mounted to my unbuntu computer. Then type command like $mkdir something Suprising that folder ./something could not be accessed by Apache anymore except I remount by umount and mount it again or "setenforce 0" What is wrong with my system can anyone point me out of this headache

View 3 Replies View RelatedOn one of my Samba shares on my server I have a folder of mp3 files of my CDs. The one I am having an issue with is "Clarence Carter/Dr. C.C." (yes, the one with the ULTIMATE party song). The "Dr. C.C." folder name is normal locally on the server, but across Samba it comes out "DMOU3A~H". It's definitely Samba doing it, because I get the same result whether accessing the share from Linux or Windoze. I can still access the folder this way, but it would be nice to not have Samba mangle the folder name this way. I am using Samba 3.4.2 on an Athlon64 X2 system running Slackware64.

1 server with centos 5.4 running 1 client with centos 5.4 - gnome running thin ethernet network
on my client desktop i have a link to a shared folder on the server. this works fine.
to the problem: after working with this (using the link and seeing it working) i shutted down the server from my client (in a terminal screen, using ssh) the terminal screen signalled the server going down and the connection ended. the linked folder on the client desktop changed its icon fine.
after that i clicked on the changed icon (of the link that was not a working link any more) and the client machine froze.... no reaction any more. i could only end the session by >ctrl-alt-f#< , log in and shutdown.
Q: is it normal Centos is that angry when you click such a link?
I have recently set up an ubuntu installation on an old PC. After some fiddling with both it, and the windows 7 machine, I have managed to share all of my drives. However, when attempting to access them from ubuntu, only 2 of the 4 hard disk shares will mount, with the other 2 failing with a Unable to mount location, failed to mount windows share error message.

I have a Lucid server with several external (eSATA) NTFS formatted drives. Right now, I'm sharing everything through Samba and administered through Webmin. Partly because I'd like to play with it and learn more and partly to see if there's any appreciable difference in overhead and speed, I'd like to try out NFS.
My question is, can the two sharing schemes (NFS and Samba) coexist on the same box peacefully?If not, I can rid of Samba and go with NFS, but I'd rather give it a shot first.Plus, some of the clients are Windows machines, so I'd have to install the SFU tools in order to get an NFS client on them.
