Software :: Is There Way To Control LCD's Fluorescent Light's Power?

Jan 15, 2010

To protect my eyes I always lower the monitor's brightness to its lowest. In some of the computers/displays I can get the desired low brightness in some others I cannot. For example in my WinXP ThinkPad R51 laptop I can make the brightness extremely low while in Ubuntu 9.04 ThinkPad R41 laptop and Apple Mac mini/23" Cinema Display I cannot get the desired lowness easily.

But in my Ubuntu 9.04 ThinkPad laptop, just as the energy saving routine has started to dim the brightness of LCD, an idea has come up. The energy saver routine was apparently lowering the fluorescent light's power, I'm sure of it. So I wonder now if there's a way to control and set that by myself? I'd like to set the fluorescent light's power to a much lower level.

Hardware :: PC Wont Power-on - Power-light Blinking?

Oct 30, 2010

I had unplugged my PC last night as sometimes there's storms at night this morning I plugged in PC and the power light is blinking and the PC wont come on at all tried different power cord, same result

PC is a AMD athlon64 3300+ 2.4ghz SiS graphics

probably the power-supply or what?

If it is the power supply, how do I find new one as I've never had to replace anything on it or any other PC?

Also, I really need access to the hard drive but it's a weird hard drive and was wondering if I could put that hard drive in my K7 PC, which already has 2 drives in it can a pc have 3 drives? do I have to add/have another ribbon cable for 3rd drive?

Ubuntu :: Controlling Bluetooth Control Light

Dec 17, 2010

I've just bought a MSI Wind U250 netbook and installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit. (Almost everything is working great out of the box. There are some little problems like dead keyboard shortcut Fn + F3 which sould be killing touchpad. BTW any package or other way to configure Fn keys?)This model of netbook has a bluetooth as an option. My netbook hasn't BT, but has bluetooth control light anyway, which isn't used at all. Such a waste, I've paid for this control light after all...

I'm using GNUbiff as an e-mail notifier. It can run a command when a new e-mail comes. Now I'm using this to play a sound: play /usr/share/sounds/purple/receive.wav. But I would like to send this way a signal to the BT control light to light or, even better, start blinking in specified manner. (Scroll Lock control light would be also great)Is there such possibility? Maybe you are aware of existence of a package able to do this, because I'm unable to locate such one.I think this is really obvious adaptation for control light and don't think I'm the first one who want such function. Some laptops even has a special control light just for e-mail (like my 12 years old fujitus-siemens) and there is Polish IM "EKG" (or "EKG2", don't remember) who blinks ScrLk when a new message comes, so I figured out there should be a potentiality to manage control lights.

Ubuntu Servers :: Fan Control - Power-Noise Optimization On The Proliant DL120 G6 ?

Jul 12, 2011

I'm trying to get the HP Proliant DL120 G6 server a lot quieter after startup under Ubuntu Server 11.04 (x64).

For now, it seems like there is no fan control at all: when I start the server, the fans start running at max speed, then it slightly lowers to 3.5K-5K RPM. Once there, it never goes down or up. There's just no fan or power control at all.

In no specific order, I will describe as much as I can my situation.

The system is IPMI 2.0 compliant, so when using the ipmitool package I can get the values of the sensors like this:

Code:

I tried to follow the procedures for using the fancontrol package together with lm-sensors, as shown at [url]. One of the very first steps is to launch "sensors-detect", which gives:

Jun 4, 2010

If i reboot the computer, the power button will work but if i suspend and resume, it doesnt work again.
The computer is built on an Asus M3N78-VM mobo (2GB RAM/Athlon3200+ single core).

acpi_listen detects the button press.

Any thoughts?

Ubuntu :: Control-c - Control-v - Copy And Paste Functions - Stopped Working

Jan 19, 2011

I don't know how this happened, but my keyboard copy and paste functions have stopped working. Oddly enough, I discovered that I can only copy and paste by using the third mouse button. Pressing down on the scroll wheel after highlighting text copies the text, pressing it again pastes it Ican still use the Edit-copy and Edit-paste menu functions.

I'm sure it has something to do with all the tinkering I have been doing with my desktop. I have been experimenting with CompizConfig and Cairo dock, changing my themes and things of this nature.

Debian :: Sound Not Card Configured - Error 'Volume Control Did Not Find Any Elements And/or Devices To Control" - Driver

Feb 8, 2011

Laptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.

Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'

Slackware :: Thinkpad T500 Fan Control - Way To Control ?

Jun 2, 2010

I have had my thinkpad for just a few short months and, it must be that we are heading into summer, but I am starting to finally run into some overheating issues especially when compiling software for awhile, i.e. kernel.

My question would be, "Is it best to let the built in thermal management take care of the issue, and I just need to know what to tweak, or to put on a script solution such as the tp-fancontrol script?

The computer takes about 5-10 minutes to overheat and the message I get in /var/log/messages is "logger: ACPI group thermal_zone / action THM1 is not defined" then it shuts down.

So, any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

I am running slackware-current x86_64 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T500.

Fedora :: Scanner Light Goes Off After Each Scan

Apr 15, 2011

I'm using a scanner with Fedora. However, linux does something that is undesirable; It turns off the scanner light, everytime it does a scan, which the HP software, which comes for windows, doesn't do. The result? The light never warms up enough and all the images come with a blue tone on them. Only after using the scanner a few times, the light warms up enough and the images start getting their true colour. The question is, can I somehow force the light to stay on, even during scans, like it happens when I am using Windows? Or not? Anyone has ideas?

Ubuntu :: Getting Very Light Colored Text

I have an annoying text color problem. I don't know what to change to fix it. I have played around with System->Preferences->Appearance to no avail. Here is the problem: I am getting very light colored text so only the currently selected item is readable. The funny thing is that in Nautilus, Firefox, Chrome, Amarok, etc.. it's fine. It seems to be in only some programs in boxes with selectable line items, but also in the area that displays status updates in FileZilla. So I'm not sure how to pinpoint the problem.

Ubuntu :: Temporary Hangs With HDD Light On?

May 4, 2011

I've been using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS for almost a year now in WUBI with WinXP. I'm a relative noob with Linux, though always eager to learn more. Lately, I have noticed that every now and then Ubuntu stops working for about 30 seconds or so with the hard disk light solidly on. Clicking anywhere does nothing until it wakes up and then remembers all my previous clicks.

When it doesn't do this, it works wonderfully. I can't figure out what sets it off. And some days it does it annoyingly often and other days not at all or rarely. I checked the log files and this is a sample of some troubled times:

Code:

Fedora :: Volume Control Keys On Keyboard Don't Control Volume Anymore

Oct 29, 2009

Volume up, volume down and mute keys on the keyboard don't control the volume any longer. They worked before. Hitting the keys brings up a progress bar widget with the volume level unchangeable, set at 0% (which is not accurate at all).It looks like the key mappings or key bindings are working, but there is a disconnect with actual functionality. The volume cannot be changed or muted anymore from the keyboard.

This worked just fine in KDE on Fedora 11 before upgrading KDE components yesterday with Yumex. I am now using KDE 4.3.2 I don't think that it's a coincidence that it stopped working after doing an update.
I updated the kernel and nVidia drivers too, but this problem exists when I went back and tested with the previous kernel, so I don't suspect the kernel upgrade. No info in Xorg.conf about the keyboard. Is there a setting that I am missing?

Sound works just fine. I can listen to whatever source I like. This is not a problem with the sound drivers as far as I can tell.I just want to be able to control the volume with the keys on my Logitech Illuminated Keyboard, model Y-UY95. Is anyone else experiencing this?I can adjust the volume with Kmix 3.5 or GNOME Volume Control V2.1

I could just dump abrt since it's hardly a necessity, but I'm inclined not to as I think it's a good idea which could potentially be of great benefit to us all.
