Ubuntu Servers :: Could Not Perform Immediate Config On Exim4-daemon-light
Jan 20, 2011
I'm more of a CentOS person, but after some issues on my new box I switched to Ubuntu server. I am working on getting it setup as a mail server (mainly for testing at the moment and soon be live). I performed apt-get install sendmail then apt-get install exim4 and got the message:Could not perform immediate configuration on 'exim4-daemon-light'. Please see man 5 apt.conf under APT:: Immediate-Configure for details. I have Ubuntu Server 10.10 32-bit on a Dell Intel Poweredge.

I have tried code...
I have tried to install exim4 and then to purge exim4-daemon-light but
that fails too.
How do I get rid of all exim4 stuff?

I've recently had to rebuild our mail server - after the old one over heated - and I've realised I never backed up the config files for exim... so now tyring to work out how the hell to configure what I had....
The setup isn't the most straight forward, so I'll try and explain what happens...
- all emails @longdomain.com are received by an hosted server on the internet
- they are then forwarded to @shortdomain.com, the IP for which is our internet connection which fowards port 25 traffic to the exim server
- the exim server then spam and virus checks the emails and forwards them to an exchange server (sorry but it works well for us)....
I've installed exim4/spamassassin/clamav successfully, and it's setup to receive emails for the relevant domains and relay from the hosted server on the internet (and some local addresses).
how I then setup exim4 to foward all emails on the relevant domains to the exchange server?

I'm trying to set this thing up. I'm running on a residential DSL line so obviously port 25 is blocked. I need a FREE solution to get around this.

I'm running Ubuntu Server 11.04 with OpenSSH, trying to create an ssh tunnel (for web traffic) to it from my (also Ubuntu) laptop. This is the command I'm using to create the tunnel:
Code: ssh -ND localhost:8080 george@192.168.1.20 I had it all working on a virtual machine.. which was deleted What settings/lines do I need to change/add from the default OpenSSH config files to get tunnelling to work? I've Googled and AllowTcpForwarding is set to yes, as is X11Forwarding.. but it still doesn't work. Chrome can connect to the server, but says the connection was closed before any data was sent.

I have a ubuntu server 9.10 installed with exim4 as MTA. I configured a mail address on it (let's say me@example.com). Before i had it working i had a other email configured (let's say me_2@example.com). At the time i had this one it didn't work i removed exim4.
Now i can successfully send mails with it by the configured me@example.com. I also configured the password for this, but when i receive the mail the old configured mail is presented as "from" (so from: me_2@example.com).
Anyone knows how this can be changed so it says the mail is from me@example.com? The mail is not an alias, and in a mail client they work separately.

I have a test server on which I'd like to run up to 30 separate instances of a program as daemons, each running on a different IP address bound to the server. I've created a init script that takes an additional command line parameter - the last octet of the IP address. For example:
Code:
sudo myprog 40 start
sudo myprog 41 start
This would run instances of the program on IP addresses 192.168.1.40 and 192.168.1.41 respectively. But it's looking like this approach isn't doable if I wish to have any or all of these run at startup, as the links in the rcN.d directories can only link to the init script, not pass a parameter.

I am having some trouble making the dropbox daemon start at boot. I followed these instructions -> [URL], which are basically a replica of the original instructions from the Dropbox Wiki [URL]. The installation went fine, except that the machine still cannot start the daemon at boot. I tried to modify the init.d script a bit (see the attachment), but it still wont work (I am not sure if my changes made any significant difference, though). The daemon will only start if I invoke it manually after login with the command:
Code:
[user@machine:~]$ service dropbox start
Which executes the daemon just fine. I also tried adding this line of code to crontab:
Code:
@reboot /etc/init.d/dropbox start
This command starts the daemon if I check with the command "service dropbox status", but if I execute the official dropbox CLI command:
Code:
~/bin/dropbox.py status
it says that Dropbox isn't running and I still have to execute it manually.
P.s.: The machine runs Ubuntu Server 10.04, with all the latest system patches and updates.

I'm trying to run BoxBackup to sync a couple active servers to a data server. I installed the server and client, making sure to follow the instructions closely with all the certificates. The problem is the service daemon on the service won't even start. The service manage reports: "bbstored dead but pid file exists" (basically, tried to instantiate the process, but it died due to faults).
Here's the log of the daemon in /var/log/box
Code:

I am running Server 10. I have a requirement to perform an action before the MySQL service starts, and perform another action after MySQL service stops.
I found the init script for MySQL under /etc/init/mysql.conf. I added my thing to the pre-start script there and works fine.
I am having trouble finding the script that stops the server so I can modify.

I would like to be able to simply run a shortcut file or batch file in a windows os to start or stop my transmission-daemon.I was thinking about using putty to auto login and execute a file using the -m switch. A problem I am running into is that /etc/init.d/transmission-daemon stoprequires the use of sudo. That would require entering a password which would be automated and insecure or would require manually typing int he password.

I use ddclient to update my records at dyndns.com.but how to configure sendmail in the case of dynamic hosts since it looks at the file /etc/hosts which contains information about the static hosts.

I've just installed subversion.I need to create a script /etc/init.d/svnserve that will start at boot time.I want to use start-stop-daemon --start so I can track my process and eventually kill it using start-stop-daemon --stop.My problem is that I can't get it to work and the documentation shows no exemple.
I've replaced $DAEMON by the whole line: svnserve -d -R -r $REPO_ROOT and got -d is not an option.I'm not quite sure what to do at that point. If someone has some experience with start-stop-daemon it would be great.

I'm planning to take a custom-built machine presently running Windows Home Server and convert it to a Ubuntu server to support the same backup functionality, but also allow me to support other server functions as well (WHS is great for backups and as a file server, but that's about it). The machine has two 1TB 7200 RPM drives. As the primary use for the machine is backups of files stored on the server as well as on the local PCs, I'd like to configure the box to support redundancy across both drives - So if one fails, I still have my data. What would be the recommended configuration of the drives to support this? I plan on using Bacula for the backups (clients and server).
I'll assume the disk format won't be NTFS.If one of the drives fail and its the boot drive, how easy is it to recover the data from the other drive? Just want to make sure there isn't some form of security that would prevent me from reading the data.
I'm new to Linux with only a bit of Unix experience, but I figure I have to start somewhere (and I have a bit of technical expertise, just with the Windows platform) This will also let me start playing with the LAMP stack.

I've installed mailman on 9.10, using apt-get, have apache2 setup already. However I'm getting 403 forbidden issues when trying to access [URL] I may have mucked something up as initially i jumped straight in and created a virtualhost and played around with the URL redirects. but as far as I can see, it's back to its default and it's still not working... When I try to access the page, in my apache error.log, i get this:

I have several sites running on a local server. Currently, they're all running on port 80. I need one particular site (and ONLY that site) to also accept connections on port 81.
If I browse to the server IP x.x.x.x:80 directly, Apache's behaviour of showing the default site should work as usual. But, if I browse to IP x.x.x.x:81, it should show a different site (the one that should be accepting both :80 and :81). This part is very important.
I was hoping something like the following would work, but it didn't Currently x.x.x.x:81 still shows what I've called myport80defaultsite.com below.
Code:
Listen 80
Listen 81
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName myport80defaultsite.com
