Apr 12, 2010I have setup a web server, ftp, ssh with ubuntu server which is working with phpmyadmin and webmin installed with it as well. (I am considering upgrading to 10.04LTS when it comes out)
However I cant get to my website with the domain name that I am using from dyndns. From on my LAN I can get to my server but using it ip address (10.10.0.200) and it work fine with ssh and ftp as well. But when I try my public address or my name it does not work. I am using IE8 as I am using a windows machine. Out side the network the domain name wont work at all, but I tried my public address and everything worked perfectly.
I have recently installed ddclient to see if had made any difference but no luck. But I am keeping it there as it is working and updating my ip address.

Apr 26, 2011How should I set up my webserver when using dyndns?My server lives behind a private router, and I opened a nonstandard port for it (xxx.dyndns.org:6789)I need to be able to access the webserver both from behind the router, and from outside. But espescially wordpress needs to have a defined specific site-url for each site, which I can not get working both inside and outside the router. Inside I now just just the local ip-number, which works ok. To access the server from outside, I have to redefine the site-url to "xxx.dyndns.org:6789", but then it is not accessible from behind the router.

Jul 2, 2010I do not know a lot about Ubuntu Servers, but I made one. I wanted to set up a web server using Apache and DynDNS. So far, I have created an account on dyndns.com and installed apache. I also installed another program (i dont remember the name) that had something to do with DynDNS. Right now, I can access the page on my server by using eLinks (text based web browser) and going to the address (myaddress.dyndns.org). If I try to access it from any other computer, I get a page that says 'Unable to Connect'.

Jun 24, 2011I have an Ubuntu Server, a dyndns account and an account with [URL]. My DynDns stuff is all working just great - novo.dyndns.tv is the address. Now I need a domain which I have already bought, to be linked to that machine at [URL] I signed up with freedns.afraid.org and now I am a bit confused at what records to add where. I added a domain - [URL] then setup a webforward as follows: redirect from [URL] and redirect from[URL] to [URL] , however if you go and visit:[URL] you will see my problem! It takes you back to [URL] server and says there is not a webforward setup for [URL]This tells us that the nameservers are all setup fine - and its something in my freedns config which is failing.

Apr 9, 2010A week ago or so neither ssh nor scp were working when attempting to connect to my on-campus computer from home. ssh was complainig about the key not matching and I figured out I could just delete the config file it was reading the (now old) key from and let it create a new one with the updated key upon prompting me whether or not to trust the remote host.
However, even though ssh is now working, I can no longer use scp. I issued scp -v and discovered a bunch of errors. scp prompts me for the remote password and even prints the message of the day on the remote computer but then just hangs and doesn't seem to be copying any files. I'm sure the issue is with the whole key change issue but I can't quite figure out why ssh would be working just fine and scp would be failing.

The problem is that I need to be able to access it from outside networks (physically I'm about 10 miles away from my home network),o I need to also set up some sort of DynDNS service so that I can access the server from anywhere.With this, with setting up a DynDNS, setting up Samba, and setting up my machine to be secure enough for these types of actions. (I just want to make sure it is secure enough since it will need to be detectable from the internet.)

May 29, 2010I am having some hang issues with firefox and am not sure what can be the problem. Here is my specs:
Toshiba Satellite L35 Laptop
Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid / Windows Vista Home Basic dual boot
Atheros Integrated NIC
Firefox v3.6.3
Everything is working fine on the network side, being confirmed by both my wife's EEE Netbook, and my iPod(r) Touch. There is no problem with my network interfaces, or my interface card, as confirmed by the other devices' ability to connect and browse at normal speeds.
However; with my lappy running Ubuntu and Firefox, a LOT of websites hang/lag when attempting to browse websites. I have read on some of the forums about disabling ipv6 through the "about:config" option and that seemed to help a little, but not to where it should be. I have tried a lot of options, but it is still lagging.

Aug 31, 2011I have been struggling to get FC15 to act as an IPv6 router for a while now, am sure I am missing something trivial.. The idea is that I have a ppp / adsl connection (this works fine), use the wireless card on my pc with hostapd and dhcpd to provide connections to other pcs (works fine), and radvd to delegate ipv6 addresses.
The issue seem to be that as soon as I turn on ipv6 forwarding (net.ipv6.conf.all.forwarding =1), the ppp connection no longer gets an IPv6 address. This means the router cannot ping any ipv6 address outside my network.
If I disable ipv6 routing, my router gets an IPv6 address on its ppp connection, and can ping things such as ipv6.google.com just fine, however (of course) no packets are forwarded from my network and radvd complains that forwarding is disabled.

messages appear in syslog each day. Each URL has from 2 - 6 attempts at various ipv6 addresses. My question is why is bind9 trying to resolve ipv6 addresses? I have done nothing to enable or disable ipv6 and thought that if not explicitly enabled I would not have to be concerned with it.

May 25, 2011I use DNS on my server as a chasing DNS so its not fully configured. I seem to be having trouble with IPV6 addresses. I'm guessing this is linked to the 6to4 tunnel I have set up to my windows box, but I'm not really sure.

Feb 4, 2010I'm planning to take a custom-built machine presently running Windows Home Server and convert it to a Ubuntu server to support the same backup functionality, but also allow me to support other server functions as well (WHS is great for backups and as a file server, but that's about it). The machine has two 1TB 7200 RPM drives. As the primary use for the machine is backups of files stored on the server as well as on the local PCs, I'd like to configure the box to support redundancy across both drives - So if one fails, I still have my data. What would be the recommended configuration of the drives to support this? I plan on using Bacula for the backups (clients and server).
I'll assume the disk format won't be NTFS.If one of the drives fail and its the boot drive, how easy is it to recover the data from the other drive? Just want to make sure there isn't some form of security that would prevent me from reading the data.
I'm new to Linux with only a bit of Unix experience, but I figure I have to start somewhere (and I have a bit of technical expertise, just with the Windows platform) This will also let me start playing with the LAMP stack.

Mar 28, 2010I have several sites running on a local server. Currently, they're all running on port 80. I need one particular site (and ONLY that site) to also accept connections on port 81.
If I browse to the server IP x.x.x.x:80 directly, Apache's behaviour of showing the default site should work as usual. But, if I browse to IP x.x.x.x:81, it should show a different site (the one that should be accepting both :80 and :81). This part is very important.
I was hoping something like the following would work, but it didn't Currently x.x.x.x:81 still shows what I've called myport80defaultsite.com below.

Ubuntu :: Reinstall The FTP Servers They Won't Start Because The Config Files Are Gone?
Mar 31, 2010I built out a headless VMWare v2.0.2 Server. I managed to work all that out but now I'm having some trouble getting my virtual machines on the server. I installed both proftpd and vsftpd but neither server lets me log in. 'Login Failed' is always returned (using the only account on the machine - created during the install).
So I decided to install samba, but samba chokes on large files. I tried over and over again to copy a 10GB VMDK file over samba and it gets to 5% or so and suddenly tells me there is a network problem and dies (which there is no network problem as these machines are all on the same subnet plugged into the same gigabit switch).
So now I'm back to FTP. Unfortunately when I ran apt-get remove proftpd, it didn't remove any of the config files (/etc/proftpd/*) so I manually deleted them. Now when I try to reinstall the FTP servers they won't start because the config files are gone. What's the apt-get syntax to completely uninstall these servers as if they had never been installed so I can start clean? I really don't want to have to do a complete system re-install just to fix 300KB FTP servers.

Jul 20, 2010We have a number of servers at work, some production and some non-production. We run some java applications on these servers. At present these java applications send emails via an SMTP connection to our live email servers.
In production all is well, the java apps send emails to customers. However, in the non-production environments all emails must not be sent out. Instead they must end up in some kind of generic inbox.
We don't want to mess with the production setup at all and it isn't an option to lose the non-prod emails altogether. So on non-prod we can reference another SMTP server and send all emails there. So far I've set up a postfix, dovecot, squirrelmail email server which appears to work.
how do I config my new email server so that any emails sent from our non-prod server to fred@hotmail.com, bill@yahoo.com, jenny@gmail.com etc all end up in one inbox?
