Server :: Gzip Log Files In Remote Servers?

Jun 7, 2011

I have limited access to several servers (key based auth) but cron facility is not available for me. Those servers getting filled up by large apache logs and I have to login to each node manually and clean them each and every day.

I tried to write a script to run from login box but when i try that it looks like it is looking for logs in the local server (login box).

So current situation is:

How can i modify this so that the script in server1 will look for files in that server and zip them?

Google showed another command called rsh but in my env it is also not avil.

Ubuntu Servers :: Gzip And Tar Hang Around And Don't Die Locks Up Backup Drive?

Apr 20, 2011

so this is really the result of another problem. There seems to be an issue with CPU spiking to 99% forever (until reboot) if I run apt-get or synaptic or update manager while an external USB drive is plugged in. Note, other USB peripherals are no problem, just an external HD.

So my work around was to eject the drive when doing apt-get or other installation work, then reattaching it to remount. Now, on to the present problem. I'm using the basic backup script (the rotating one) found in the Ubuntu Server manual. It uses tar and gzip to store a compressed version of the desired directories on my external USB. (which sits in a fire proof safe - this is for a business)

However, it seems tar and gzip which run nightly 6 days a week via cron as root, don't ever want to die, and they don't release the drive. I have to reboot the system (I can't logoff) to release the drive, unplug it, the I can do update/install work.

Of course, if apt etc. would work fine without conflicts with the external device, I'd not care about the tar/gzip problem other than it generally isn't a proper way for them to function and it chews up some CPU cycles. (they run about 0.6 and 1.7 percent respectively) I also can't kill them via kill or killall. They seem undead.

I need the wireless to work because now a bridged network from my windows laptop isn't working.

General :: Control Gzip Compression Rates While Archiving Files With Tar?

Jun 4, 2011

I have a script which periodically backs up a directory using the command "tar -czvf [name] [directory]" but my problem is that the script has recently been putting a lot of stress on the server (Minecraft SMP) and tends to lag players as it backs up, which recently has been taking nearly 5 minutes.So I need to know if there's a way to control the GZip compression rate at the same time that it archives and backs up the files?I understand that I can first tar the files and then GZip them separately with a different compression rate afterwards, but this would not work because it names the files with the current server time, which sometimes changes in between commands.

Ubuntu Servers :: FTP From Server To Remote File Server?

Jul 6, 2010

I support a small business which runs a headless Ubuntu Server (10.04 32bit) as a file server which is accessed by Windows machines.Although the company has it's own back-up procedure they have decided to back-up some (none sensitive) files online. The have chosen FileFactory (http://www.filefactory.com/) as the host for this. FileFactory allows files to be uploaded to their server by FTP however I do not know how to set this up on the server.

The idea, if it is possible, is to connect to FileFactory through FTP and then synchronise the data using an Rsync command.I normally access the server through Webmin and it has vsFTP installed. I can access the company's server by FTP from inside and outside of the network so I know that vsFTP is working for incomming connections however I cannot work out how to configure it to connect to the FileFactory server.

Server :: Remote IP To Access Various Files?

Nov 27, 2010

I have a computer set up running an apache httpd server with the basic LAMP functionality. I logged into the server today and noticed numerous attempts by a remote IP to access various files on my server.

Code:
[Fri Nov 26 07:37:56 2010] [error] [client 72.167.161.46] File does not exist: /var/www/html/phpMyAdmin-2.8.1-rc1
[Fri Nov 26 07:37:56 2010] [error] [client 72.167.161.46] File does not exist: /var/www/html/phpMyAdmin-2.8.1
[Fri Nov 26 07:37:57 2010] [error] [client 72.167.161.46] File does not exist: /var/www/html/phpMyAdmin-2.8.2
[Fri Nov 26 07:37:57 2010] [error] [client 72.167.161.46] File does not exist: /var/www/html/sqlmanager

[Code]...

There are many many more lines similar to this but its obvious that a remote host was attempting to run my phpmyadmin page and gain access. My question is that since I'm a novice at running httpd what sort of things should I be looking out for in regards to security and configuration to prevent any attacks or is this common and should just be ignored? I do run phpMyAdmin on the server and have configured MySQL to not have blank passwords or user accounts. The database had no new changes to it so I doubt they actually accessed it.

I also cannot get to the desktop via VNC.The reason for this, is that there is no monitor attached so Ubuntu says that it is trying to run in Low Graphics Mode. Ubuntu Servers :: Remote GUI Server/Client With Sound

Sep 28, 2010

I am looking for a client/server application that can allow me to have remote GUI access (eg: VNC) but with the ability to use sound.

I see that TeamViewer has a linux application out now but for my company, it would compromise security protocol because it reaches out to the TeamViewer servers to do any work.

Basically, we have applications that require a GUI and we need to hear sounds from them if they throw an alert (the app is a monitoring tool).

We are running a VNC server on it currently and when our monitoring machine was on Windows, TightVNC was able to get the sound...that is not the case with any Linux client so I am wondering if there is actually one that exists.

Ubuntu Servers :: Remote Backup Ftp Server With Confidential Data?

Because its remote on the helpdesk side, they'll need some access to the file system but need to be completely blocked off from the ftp folder where all the data is at. How can I make sure I can keep them away from my data and still be able to retrieve or copy files over without permission issues between both servers?

Ubuntu Servers :: Freezing When Running A Script On A Remote Server

I do mean everything ftp/ssh/nfs/login-requests/... even if I go and physically plug in monitor and keyboard there is no response. It basically needs a full restart to clear. I have repeated this several times. Now something is clearly wrong here but does anyone know what. I didn't think a non-admin user should be able to actually lock up system processes.

Server :: UCC SSL Cert Error - Key Values Missmatch - On Remote Servers

May 4, 2010

I have a Godaddy UCC (Multiple domain) certificate for the following domains:

example.com
upload1-example.com
upload2-example.com

The rsa was generated from example.com server using example.com as CN Common name.

GoDaddy's website adds the extra names to a CSR you provide, does the checks and grants the cert.

My problem is that whilst the certificate works fine on the server example.com (from which the csr was created), it comes up with two errors when restarting apache on remote servers.

1>> Certificate common name does not match server name
2>> SSL Library error - check private key:key missmatch.

I donn't understand how these keys could ever work as no reference to the private keys of the remote servers is ever used in creating the UCC certificate.

General :: Copying Files From Remote Server To Local?

Jan 26, 2011

I have a problem while copying files from a remote computer to my local one using the scp command. I am sure that I am using it correctly, please check it below:
---
blah@blah.com:~/g4work> scp blah2@blah2.com:IndirectMethod_Spher...s/H_1.mac.root .
---
What I get in return (instead of the statement saying 100% of file copied) is:
---
On this machine the G4SYSTEM=Linux-g++
---

The interesting point is that the above returned statement is one of the Environment variables set on both the machines that are necessary to work with a toolkit called Geant4. Here is what I get when I type 'printenv | grep G4' just to show you (note the statement in bold):
---
G4LEVELGAMMADATA=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/data/PhotonEvaporation2.0
G4INSTALL=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02

G4SYSTEM=Linux-g++

The other thing that I would like to mention is that these Geant4 Env. Variables are loaded each time a new (bash) shell is started as a result of the bash login script.

Ubuntu Servers :: 9.10 Server - How To Setup Remote Desktop / VNC Via SSH + Command Line

Feb 21, 2010

I am playing around with the idea of being able to use a cloud or instance based service to install Ubuntu 9.10 Server. This will enable me to have remote access via SSH command line.So far, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 Server + Ubuntu Desktop to a virtual machine. I can access this via SSH and locally via the desktop. However, in the real environment the only access I am going to have initially is via SSH.

I would like to be able to connect using Windows Remote Desktop or VNC (whichever is easier and most importantly - most secure) to the machine.. even though the desktop is on there, I need to somehow configure the remote access all from the command line.I've had a read of various forums and have been trawling support forums for days but can't find a working solution for 9.10 Server or that fits my situation above where I will not have any physical access to the desktop or machine to configure remote desktop. It all has to be done via SSH/command line.
